An open letter to the Salina Commissioners 10/12/20:

This letter is in response to the Salina City Commission Notice of the public forum and listening session regarding the proposed “Citizen Review Board” proposed by the SUNFLOWER COALITION that has the BLM, Black Lives Matter FIST on its opening face book page. They want their policy proposal accepted quickly. All this causes me great concern.

After watching many examples of BLM on television of their lawlessness, violence, massive property damage, looting, and injury to innocent citizens, business owners, and police, I am alarmed!

I love this peaceful city. I never want to see several bus loads of BLM terrorists unloaded in Salina. They could attempt to destroy our rebuilt downtown and more. When the Police try to stop their lawless activity and their resisting arrest, (as we see across the nation) there would be violence against our Police. The Police could be accused of excessive force in protecting themselves, our lives, and our property.

To me it is an outrage to even consider the unidentified members of the Sunflower Coalition, which supports the BLM to have any part in promoting a Citizen Review Board to evaluate our Police and law enforcement activities

In the past military surplus equipment was not necessary. Now, with Terrorists, Criminals, and so -called peaceful protestors destroying our cities, Law Enforcement could better protect us with the military equipment supplied by the 1033 program. Why waste tax- payer money on buying expensive similar civilian equipment?

The Sunflower Coalition Policy Proposal, July 15, 2020 would give to much power and authority to the Citizen Review Board. The Salina Commission and the Chief of Police and his staff can evaluate their proposal and take from it some items if necessary. I believe the Salina Commissioners Should REJECT the Sunflower Coalition Proposal.

WILCOX: Open letter to city commission

Smoky View 4-H Club members officially closed the 2019-2020 year by holding club elections and submitting record books.&nbsp;

The Smoky View 4-H Club met at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20 at Riverside Park in Lindsborg and via Zoom. Families who were present at the park were socially distanced and wore masks.&nbsp;

This was the club’s first in-person meeting since February.&nbsp;

"It was so nice to actually see everyone in person,” Mandy Griffin, club leader, said. “Even if we were six feet apart, social distancing and wearing our masks, it was amazing to have our club back together again for elections."

The club welcomed new member Kenzie Isaacson.

During the club’s meeting, safety officer Marik Anderson reported about school bus safety.&nbsp;

Members also approved the treasurer’s report and nominated people for district 4-H awards.&nbsp;

It was announced that the club’s parent committee met in August and decided club members would meet outside at Salemsborg Church so families could socially distance outside. There will also be a Zoom link provided for families to join meetings from home, if that is preferred or necessary. This will continue until the club is again able to meet at Soderstrom cafeteria.&nbsp;

The meeting’s program was officer elections. The following officers will lead the Smoky View 4-H Club for the 2020-2021 year:

●District Council representatives: Brynna Anderson, Marik Anderson, Hensli Lofdahl and Emma Littich. 

●Reporters: Eian Pracht and Kate Griffin. 

●Historians: Kayla Norberg and Audrey Trautwein. 

●Parliamentarians: Hensli Lofdahl and Wyatt Griffin. 

●Song leaders: Aspen Trautwein and Brynna Anderson. 

●Recreational leaders: Marik Anderson and Wyatt Griffin. 

●Greeters: Adison Trautwein and River Norberg.

After the meeting, members of the club’s parent committee remained at the park to judge record books while maintaining social distance and wearing masks.&nbsp;

“A huge thank you to all the parents who stayed after our September meeting and helped judge record books, KAP's, and Pin applications,” Griffin said.&nbsp;

The club members plan to next meet at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 18 outside at Salemsborg Church; a Zoom link will be provided for families who prefer or need to meet electronically. The October meeting is the parent meeting. During this meeting, parents fill the roles their children were elected to in September so the club leaders can train the incoming officers.&nbsp;

After the October meeting, club members plan to celebrate their achievements for the 2019-2020 year by carving pumpkins and roasting s’mores.

Smoky View 4-H Club elects officers at final meeting of the year

TOPEKA —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a domestic disturbance and have arrested a suspect identified as Jahiem Brown.

Just after 2p.m. Saturday, police responded to report of a domestic disturbance in a 4-door passenger car in 1900 Block of SE California in Topeka, according to Lt. Edward Stanley.

Upon arrival officers learned that a man later identified as 19-year-old Jahiem Brown,&nbsp; a woman and two children who were traveling in the car. At one point, Brown and woman were involved in verbal altercation, according to Lt. Stanley.

Brown exited the vehicle and fired a gun at it before fleeing on foot. Police later observed Brown running in the area of 20th and SE Iowa Avenue. 

With the assistance of Shawnee County sheriff's deputies and the Kansas Highway Patrol, officers established a perimeter and were able to take the Brown into custody, according to Stanley. He is being held on requested charges of&nbsp;Aggravated Endangering A Child; Reckless Situation,&nbsp;Aggravated assault; Use of a deadly weapon,&nbsp;Criminal discharge of firearm; Recklessly at occupied vehicle,&nbsp;Interference with LEO, felony,&nbsp;Display/possess fictitious/revoked/suspended driver's license and numerous driving violations, according to the Shawnee County booking report.

He set the first stake in the prairie. That’s what my dad always told people about Circle E Feedlot. The feedlot was his life for six decades. Work for my dad was something of a religion. He poured himself into every project he undertook. Many times I’ve seen him come up with an idea, draw it out, go to the shop and make it, and then install it. Beyond these more creative endeavors, he liked “getting the job done.” He knew how to do a lot things: welding, plumbing, carpentry, heavy equipment. The list goes on. Much of this work was dangerous. He didn’t always escape those dangers, but injury or illness did not stop him. Even after he supposedly “retired” in the early 2000s, he still “consulted” at the feedlot, now named Windmill Ranch. He was working there as of several weeks ago, before his final decline began.

Anyone from Potwin and surrounding areas knows that he worked tirelessly for the community as well from the early 1980s onward. I found this somewhat of a surprise at first. Early in his life, dad had never been outgoing, but in 1981 (as I recall) the feedlot changed hands. We had been living on land the feedlot owned, and in a matter of a couple weeks, my parents were cast out of the country and into the metropolis of Potwin. I figured dad would hate it, but Potwin became another project. He got himself elected to city council in short order, and then he became the mayor. He’s been in that job for thirty-three years. Beyond that, he joined the Lions Club. Bit of a shocker there. But of course he threw himself into that as well, eventually becoming a district governor in the late 90s. Then there was Kansas Pride, Plant a Row, and who knows what else.

Work and community occupied much of his time, but fishing took up the rest. And for him, fishing was work. He loved crappie fishing and limb lining for channel and flathead. If all else failed, he’d catch a bunch of tiny bluegill. Anything to “stretch the line.” Of course he could not just pursue the sport; he also started up a custom crappie jig business. In the 1970s, he operated a fish farm for several years on top of all the work at the feedlot. He also enjoyed other outdoor stuff: camping, gardening, and hunting (early in life).

Dad grew up rural, Mennonite, and poor. Much of his life went to overcoming that. I think he probably wished he had more children, but my parents could not have them. I was it. But he gave me all the time he had. The same goes for my mom. He loved her more than anything, and her passing in 2015 knocked him down in a way he could not fully beat. He’s with her now, probably organizing some new project.

Dean’s life began on April 1, 1938, the son of Alfred and Alma (Boese) Schmidt near Galva, Kansas. He married Vera June Unruh on April 22, 1956 at Eden Mennonite Church in Burns, Kansas. They enjoyed almost 59 years together before her passing in March of 2015.

Dean worked most of his adult life at Circle E Feedlot near Potwin, retiring as Operations Manager. He served as the mayor of Potwin for 33 years. He enjoyed memberships with the Lions Club, Kansas PRIDE, Plant a Row for the Hungry, and numerous governing boards in Butler County.

His loving family includes his son and his wife, Jim Schmidt and Andrea Smalley of Nora, Illinois; grandchildren, Mike Banghart (Holly) and Andrew Banghart; great-granddaughter, Clarrisa Banghart; brothers, Clinton Schmidt (Kathleen) of Brainerd, Kansas and Alfred “Toby” Schmidt, Jr. (Shirley) of Whitewater, Kansas; sisters, Helen Russell and Carrie Gutscher both of Newton, Kansas, Esther “Jeannie” Koehn of Lamar, Missouri.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Vera; and a brother in childhood, Warren. Dean passed away peacefully on Friday, October 9, 2020, at the age of 82 years old.

His family will gather with friends on Tuesday, October 13, from 6-8 p.m. at Lamb Funeral Home, 120 S. Main, Whitewater. There will be a private family graveside. On Wednesday, October 14, at 4:30 p.m., the family would like to invite the community to a memorial gathering at the outdoor Lions Club shelter at 201 N. Miller, Potwin, Kansas for fingerfood and fellowship.

The feedlot was his life for six decades. Work for my dad was something of a religion. He poured himself into every project he undertook. Many times I’ve seen him come up with an idea, draw it out, go to the shop and make it, and then install it. Beyond these more creative endeavors, he liked “getting the job done.” He knew how to do a lot things: welding, plumbing, carpentry, heavy equipment. The list goes on. Much of this work was dangerous. He didn’t always escape those dangers, but injury or illness did not stop him. Even after he supposedly “retired” in the early 2000s, he still “consulted” at the feedlot, now named Windmill Ranch. He was working there as of several weeks ago, before his final decline began.Anyone from Potwin and surrounding areas knows that he worked tirelessly for the community as well from the early 1980s onward. I found this somewhat of a surprise at first. Early in his life, dad had never been outgoing, but in 1981 (as I recall) the feedlot changed hands. We had been living on land the feedlot owned, and in a matter of a couple weeks, my parents were cast out of the country and into the metropolis of Potwin. I figured dad would hate it, but Potwin became another project. He got himself elected to city council in short order, and then he became the mayor. He’s been in that job for thirty-three years. Beyond that, he joined the Lions Club. Bit of a shocker there. But of course he threw himself into that as well, eventually becoming a district governor in the late 90s. Then there was Kansas Pride, Plant a Row, and who knows what else.Work and community occupied much of his time, but fishing took up the rest. And for him, fishing was work. He loved crappie fishing and limb lining for channel and flathead. If all else failed, he’d catch a bunch of tiny bluegill. Anything to “stretch the line.” Of course he could not just pursue the sport; he also started up a custom crappie jig business. Pamela "Pam" Elaine Keller, 60, of Salina, passed away Sunday, October 4, 2020, at North Kansas City Hospital, Hospice House, with her children by her side. Pam was born on January 26, 1960 in Salina, KS. She graduated from Miltonvale High School in 1978 and then attended Fort Hays State University. Shortly after graduation, Pam began her career in Salina, KS as a teacher.

Pam taught for 35 years at St. Mary's Catholic Grade School. First, as the 4th grade teacher, and later as the Librarian. She was a caring, thoughtful, and patient teacher and was well loved and respected by both the students and her fellow teachers. Every year, Pam participated in a National Geographic contest allowing her to share her love of Geography and Social Studies with her students. Each new school year brought a new country or region of the world for her students to discover and sometimes she was even able to take learning trips to discover those places in person. Above all, Pam took joy in sharing Kansas's History with her students and taking them to visit Topeka, our state's Capitol, on field trips. International Pancake Day activities were led by Pam who hosted an annual pancake race for the students. Pam's infectious sense of humor shone in her stories, jokes, and her contagious laugh; she always lit up the room. As a librarian, Pam shared her love of reading, inspiring the next generation of students to become readers. Pam made each story she read aloud to the students unique by adding different voices for the characters. Pam delighted in suggesting books to her students or reading books they suggested to her. Pam's passion for education made a lasting impact on the students at St. Mary's Catholic Grade School as well as the future students who will no doubt enjoy the traditions she established at the school.

Aside from Pam's career, her greatest accomplishment was becoming a mother. Pam was a devoted mother to Brandon and Casey. Pam always made time to be a part of Brandon's Boy Scout Troop, Casey's Baton events, and both kids' sports. Her greatest passion was spending time with her children and supporting them in all of their accomplishments. Pam was glad she was able to see both of her kids graduate from college, start careers, and fall in love. Pam was able to be there for Brandon and Shannon on their wedding day, something they will cherish for the rest of their lives.

Pam was active in her sorority, Beta Sigma Phi, Catholic Daughters, and was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. She surrounded herself with friends from every season of her life. Once you were in Pam's life, she held you in a special place in her heart. Pam was very family oriented, spending as much time as she could with her extended family and claiming many of her great nieces and nephews as her own grandchildren. She also spent time with Craig Ballou, her special friend. She loved spending time with her sisters and helping with the family harvest. Pam left behind many personalized Scrabble boards for her loved ones and scrapbooks of their travels. Traveling with friends and family was one of Pam's passions, her trip to Ireland topping them all.

She leaves behind her daughter Casey Keller; and son and daughter-in-law, Brandon and Shannon Keller; siblings, Karen, Nadine, Lisa, Dallas, and Robert; 15 nieces and nephews; and 17 great nieces and nephews.

Pam was preceded in death by her parents John "Bob" and Marion Breen; siblings Dennis, Douglas, Colleen, Kathy, Mary Ann, and twin infant sisters; niece Darci; and nephew Jeremy.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, at Ryan Mortuary, Salina, followed by a Vigil Service at 7 p.m. at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Salina. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 17, at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Salina.

Falun native adds another collection to Forsyth Library

HAYS -- For decades, Special Collections and Archives at Fort Hays State University’s Forsyth Library has been developing and preserving&nbsp;research&nbsp;collections&nbsp;that tell the story of the cultural histories of the Great Plains with a concentration on central and western Kansas communities.

A recent donation from FHSU alum Tim Johnson completes the Tim Johnson postcard collection, which&nbsp;​contains&nbsp;thousands of photographic and “real photo” postcards. The cards were created by renowned national photographers, such as Hal Reid, traveling lensmen, and local photographers who captured unique moments of ordinary Americans in turn-of-the-century Kansas communities through the Great Depression.

Deborah Ludwig, Dean of Forsyth Library, elaborated: “These remarkable historical postcards provide a window through which we can better know and understand the people, places, and events that came before us and the many ways in which our state and our communities have grown and changed over the previous century.”

This collection captures moments frozen in time, telling the story&nbsp;of main streets, store interiors, horse-drawn wagons, industries, and neighborhoods that evolved and devolved throughout a span of several decades. It includes&nbsp;several rare postcards, such as&nbsp;“Hamburger Gene”, one of Johnson’s prized pieces and only one of six cards known to exist.

Brian Gribben, coordinator of Government Documents and Special Collections, explained, “we have to remember that popular photography was still in its infancy, so these real photo postcards provide rare glimpses into what everyday life was like in these communities. Viewing pieces of our collective past in such an unfiltered form is invaluable as it creates opportunities that textual sources cannot.”

Johnson’s interest in collecting unique Kansas memorabilia goes back to childhood. Born in Falun, Johnson discovered early 1900s hometown memorabilia in the basement of his father’s bank which sparked a fascination in Kansas history. Over a 40-year period, Johnson’s collection expanded to include postage, postcards, photographs, maps and letters from all across Kansas.

Johnson wanted a place where his collections could be preserved and shared with others. Nestled among many of the Main Street America communities represented in the postcards and having a strong mission for preserving the history of the Great Plains, Forsyth Library is now the home for many of Tim Johnson’s collections.

“It’s like sending the last of my kids off to college. But I know they’ll be well taken care of, I can still come and visit, and they’ll benefit everyone,” shared Johnson, a 1982 FHSU graduate and a long-time benefactor of the library.

Forsyth Library is&nbsp;processing the collection to ensure the postcards are discoverable and taking thorough preservation and conservation steps to make these historical artifacts available to researchers in the future.&nbsp;Johnson’s unique collections enrich Forsyth Library’s concentration of unique materials about Great Plains Research and will be incorporated into course instruction, the library’s Digital Collections, and future exhibits that support the educational and research mission of Fort Hays State University and the broader community.

“Tim Johnson has been a true friend to researchers and students at Fort Hays State University and throughout the entire state of Kansas through his series of donations to Forsyth Library’s Special Collections.&nbsp;Tim’s passion for history and his trust in our library to preserve this impressive collection for the enjoyment of future generations is deeply appreciated,” Ludwig commented.

In addition to preserving the history of the Great Plains, FHSU’s Special Collections also has collections concentrating around classic children’s literature, ethnic studies of the settlers of Central and Western Kansas, military history, rare books, and university history. Many of these notable collections began with donations by passionate individuals and collectors who wanted their treasures preserved and shared with FHSU, researchers, and the wider community.

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a robbery and have made an arrest.

Just before 12:30a.m. Thursday, police responded to a disturbance with a weapon call at a business in the 9400 block of East Harry in Wichita, according to officer Charley Davidson.

Upon arrival, officers made contact with a 20-year-old woman who reported meeting with Crawford Anderson, 20, Wichita, at the location. 

During the meeting, Anderson entered her car, pointed a handgun at her, and demanded property.

Anderson took the property and then fled from the vehicle on foot. No one was injured, according to Davidson.

Through the investigation, it was learned the preplanned meeting involved an illegal drug transaction, and Anderson was determined to be involved. Officers located him Thursday afternoon in the 9400 block of East Harry, and he was arrested without incident. He was booked on requested charges of aggravated robbery.

Some of the property taken in the robbery was recovered, according to Davidson.

Mike Hartung’s paintings are not for the fragile. In that way, they’re just like Kansas.

He’s also a classic character, the kind that could only emerge from a flinty place like this.

Now 76, Hartung grew up in Fredonia and worked as a commercial printer in downtown Lindsborg for 45 years. At night, he’d go upstairs to a studio where he quietly created more than 700 paintings, many of them on 4-by-8-foot sheets of Masonite. He might have lived out his years in obscurity if not for his old friend Laura Klocke and her husband, Richard Klocke, then the exhibitions manager at Lawrence’s Spencer Museum, who learned he was in poor health and living in dubious conditions. They intervened and began working to bring him some attention.

Hartung’s first exhibition was three years ago, with simultaneous shows at the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.salinaartcenter.org/mikehartung">Salina Art Center</a>, the&nbsp;<a href="http://sandzen.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Mike-Hartung-FLYER.pdf">Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery</a>&nbsp;in Lindsborg and the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fhsu.edu/art-and-design/moss-thorns/index">Moss-Thorns Gallery</a>&nbsp;at Fort Hays State University.

“His paintings of gas stations and laundromats possess the existential angst of Edward Hopper’s iconic works from the 1930s and ’40s,” the critic Elizabeth Kirsch&nbsp;<a href="http://kcstudio.org/little-help-friends-mike-hartung/">wrote in KC Studio</a>, “while works that deal with the seasons and nature are delicate, romantic, even surreal.”

“It’s an incredibly important body of work,” says Bill North, who spent 17 years as the senior curator of the&nbsp;<a href="https://beach.k-state.edu/">Beach Museum</a>&nbsp;at Kansas State University and then seven years as the executive director at the Salina Art Center before he left last year.

North sums up Hartung’s work as “a scathing critique of American exceptionalism.”

“He’s going to places where most people don’t care to go,” North says. “You know, Kansans like pretty pictures. And Mike’s pictures are not pretty, but they’re so powerful.”

Which brings us to “The Golden Turd.”

Hartung says he was essentially paralyzed by COVID-19 — not the actual disease, but the overpowering emotions many of us felt as the pandemic hit back in March.

“I couldn’t accept it,” he says. “Just the idea of what normal people were going through deeply affected me. I couldn’t believe how the health profession was treated like they were expendable — these people had gone to school for a long time to take care of us, and we threw them out there without protection and fumbled around, called it a hoax.”

“I guess maybe I’m not totally opposed to dystopic visions of whatever,” he says, “but that was more than I wanted to deal with.”

“I was lying in bed one night and thought, ‘Well shit, I’ve got three weeks. Why don’t I see what I can come up with,'” he said. “I’d had this idea before COVID, in the back of my mind.”

Hartung sometimes makes up stories to go with his paintings, deploying these bizarre, lurid and darkly comic narratives as part of the work’s texture.

The show opened at Dala Town, a retail space on Main Street, on Sept. 18. It was up throughout that weekend, but on Monday, he learned some folks were not pleased with “The Golden Turd” and another painting that included an unpleasant rendering of the former president of Lindsborg’s Bethany College.

The show came down. Lest anyone think Lindsborg is intolerant, it reopened this past weekend at a place called the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.redbarnstudio.org/">Red Barn Studio Museum</a>. The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/SmokyValleyArtsandFolklifeCenter/">Smoky Valley Arts &amp; Folklife Center</a>, which had been promoting the show, posted a note on Facebook making it clear that “the artist’s depictions do not express the views or opinions” of the various sponsoring organizations or venues, but “we believe that freedom of artistic expression is an essential part of our mission.”

Despite his depiction of the president, Hartung volunteers that he’d describe himself as “a progressive Republican like we had with people like&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_B._Pearson">Jim Pearson</a>” (the state’s Republican U.S. Senator from 1962-1978).

“Even Nancy Landon Kassebaum was pretty reasonable,” he says. “I sure as hell wasn’t ashamed of her. Now these clowns we’ve got are pathetic. It’s all Trump all the time.”

Hartung says he hasn’t experienced any negative repercussions from his work. He credits North for “showing a lot of courage” by including his piece “Tailgating with the GOP” in the Salina Art Center’s 2017 show. Hartung describes it as depicting “a handmaid delivering children whose heads are being chopped off, going onto a grill to become chicken wings, with three little piggies sitting on park bench as the 1%.”

“It’s a very tough, tough painting,” says North, who hung it in a back room and posted a sign alerting viewers so there was no chance of anyone “stumbling onto it.” At the opening, he says, he stood next to a woman he guesses was in her 70s, and probably a Republican.

“She turned to me and basically thanked the Art Center for showing it,” North says.

He doesn’t remember her exact words, but they were something like: “I don’t agree with any of it, but I know it’s important that we look at things like this and talk about them.”

Kansans can see and talk about Hartung’s new work at Lindsborg’s Red Barn through Oct. 24. And they might find him any time hanging out on Main Street.

“I’m sort of the curmudgeon who sits down at the White Peacock coffee shop and dispenses wisdom whether they want it or not,” he says.

“I don’t ask for much,” he says. “All I ask is that I can at least live until Nov. 3 so I can vote.”

The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/SmokyValleyArtsandFolklifeCenter/">Smoky Valley Arts &amp; Folklife Center</a>, which had been promoting the show, posted a note on Facebook making it clear that “the artist’s depictions do not express the views or opinions” of the various sponsoring organizations or venues, but “we believe that freedom of artistic expression is an essential part of our mission.”Despite his depiction of the president, Hartung volunteers that he’d describe himself as “a progressive Republican like we had with people like&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_B._Pearson">Jim Pearson</a>” (the state’s Republican U.S. Senator from 1962-1978).“Even Nancy Landon Kassebaum was pretty reasonable,” he says. “I sure as hell wasn’t ashamed of her. Now these clowns we’ve got are pathetic. It’s all Trump all the time.”Hartung says he hasn’t experienced any negative repercussions from his work. He credits North for “showing a lot of courage” by including his piece “Tailgating with the GOP” in the Salina Art Center’s 2017 show. Lindsborg painter’s ‘scathing critique of American exceptionalism’ finds home

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed won the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of his efforts to end his country's long-running border conflict with neighbor and bitter rival Eritrea. Character actor Robert Forster, who was nominated for an Oscar for his role as a bail bondsman in "Jackie Brown," died of brain cancer at the age of 78.
