Supreme Court tells community it can't bar in-person worship

Over the course of last several weeks the Barton County Sheriff’s Office has taken several burglary reports from late January to mid February, according to sheriff Brian Bellendir.

 The estimated amount of loss has been in the tens of thousands of dollars. On February 20, the Sheriff’s office took a report of a stolen 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche in Barton County. The vehicle was located the next evening by the Larned Police Department and Pawnee County Sheriff’s Office. The occupants of the vehicle were arrested by the Pawnee County Sheriff’s Office for drug charges as well as the possessing the stolen vehicle.

The Barton County Sheriff’s Office recovered the vehicle at which time they noted what appeared to be property matching the description of stolen property from Barton County thefts. Over the last week Sheriff’s deputies and detectives from the Barton County Sheriff’s Office have been conducting an investigation which led to the search of a residence in Hoisington, Kansas and recovered a substantial amount of stolen property. At least six burglaries in Barton County have been cleared, with the possibility of more being solved pending investigation.

The suspects, who had been arrested on the Pawnee County drug charges were in the Barton County Jail during this investigation. Two suspects have been booked for the burglaries. Edward Johnson age 51 and Austin Lemonds age 33, both of Hoisington, are also now being held on requested charges of two counts of burglary of a residence, three counts of burglary of a non-dwelling, four counts of criminal damage to property, four counts of conspiracy to commit burglary, four counts of criminal damage to property and three counts of criminal trespass. Not all the property has been recovered. Deputies are still looking for a Polaris Ranger ATV, a trailer, plasma cutters as well as other welding and shop equipment. Sheriff: 2 jailed suspects linked to series of Kansas burglaries

Improving vehicle safety systems takes priority over developing self-driving cars

WICHITA – Automakers may already hold the key to improving public acceptance of self-driving cars: fine-tuning existing vehicle technology. AAA’s annual automated vehicle survey finds that only 22% of people feel manufacturers should focus on developing self-driving vehicles. The majority of drivers (80%) say they want current vehicle safety systems, like automatic emergency braking and lane keeping assistance, to work better and more than half—58%—said they want these systems in their next vehicle.

These findings signal that people are open to more sophisticated vehicle technology, which if they provide positive experiences for drivers, will open the road to self-driving vehicle acceptance. Interestingly, people’s hesitation toward self-driving vehicles is reflected by how little the pandemic has changed this opinion with the majority saying COVID-19 would make no difference in their decision to use a self-driving vehicle as an alternative to public transportation or ride-hailing.

“People are ready to embrace new vehicle technology, especially if it will make driving safer,” said Greg Brannon, AAA’s Director of Automotive Engineering and Industry Relations. “Consumers are clear about what they want and if automakers seize the opportunity to provide a better experience now, it will pave the way for the vehicles of tomorrow.”

Nearly 96% of 2020 vehicle models came equipped with at least one advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) such as automatic emergency braking, blind spot warning or lane keeping assistance. Consumers who buy new will likely have at least one type of vehicle safety system and in many cases, this could be their first interaction with more advanced vehicle technology. Previous AAA research has found that some systems, particularly those that provide the highest level of automation available to the public, do not always work as expected. These negative experiences could influence driver opinion of future vehicle automation. It also reinforces the need for manufacturers to continue to hone vehicle technology by expanding testing and focusing on including more real-world scenarios encountered by drivers.

Still lukewarm about self-driving technology For six years, AAA’s annual automated vehicle survey has gauged consumer sentiment regarding emerging vehicle technology, focusing on self-driving vehicles. While American’s interest in owning a car with more advanced technology grows, they are still struggling to warm up to the idea of full vehicle automation. AAA’s survey found that 14% of drivers would trust riding in a vehicle that drives itself, similar to last year’s results. However, 86% either said they would be afraid to ride in a self-driving vehicle (54%) or are unsure about it (32%).

COVID-19 has had little impact People’s hesitation toward self-driving vehicles is reflected by how little the pandemic has changed opinion. AAA asked drivers if COVID-19 would influence their decision to use a self-driving vehicle as an alternative to public transportation or ride-hailing. Only a relatively small number said they would be more likely to opt for a self-driving vehicle, but a larger number said COVID-19 would make no difference in affecting their decision.

Self-driving vehicles are still years away from being available to consumers. However, as testing on public roads expands, drivers will likely interact with various levels of new vehicle technology. The public should also find opportunities to educate themselves on when and how self-driving vehicles will be a part of daily life. A collective effort by both industry and consumers is what it will take to move the needle away from apprehension and closer toward acceptance.

“Transparent, accurate and frequent information from the industries involved in developing self-driving vehicles will ease consumer concerns,” said AAA’s Brannon.

Methodology The survey was conducted January 15-17, 2021, using a probability-based panel designed to be representative of the U.S. household population overall. The panel provides sample coverage of approximately 97% of the U.S. household population. Most surveys were completed online; consumers without Internet access were surveyed over the phone.

A total of 1,010 interviews were completed among U.S. adults, 18 years of age or older. The margin of error for the study overall is 4% at the 95% confidence level. Smaller subgroups have larger error margins.

AAA Survey: Drivers want fine-tuning of existing technology

BARTON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man on numerous drug charges after a late-night traffic stop.

Just before 4a.m. Thursday, a sheriff's deputy stopped a 2013 Chrysler 200 in the 5600 block of W. 10th Street in Great Bend for speeding, according to sheriff Brian Bellendir.

During the course of the traffic stop, deputies determined the driver later identified as Andrew Decoudres age 32 of Larned, was driving under the influence of alcohol/or drugs. 

Deputies also located what is believed to be LSD, a substantial amount of methamphetamine and prescription drugs as well as paraphernalia during the course of the investigation.

Deputies arrested Decoudres and booked him on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, possessions of a hallucinogenic substance with intent to distribute, possession of prescription drugs, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia as well as interference with law enforcement officer and DUI as well as various other traffic charges. He is being held in lieu of a $100,000 bond, according to Bellendir.

Virgil Marvin English passed away on Friday, February 19, 2021 at the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit Kansas, at the age of 89 years. Virgil and his twin sister, Vonna, were born June 25, 1931 on the family farm in Asherville township, they were the youngest of five children born to Ernest and Myrtle (Jones) English. Virgil was the last surviving sibling. He graduated from Beloit High School in 1949. In 1951 Virgil entered the Army and was a Veteran of the Korean War. Upon returning from the war, he worked for his uncles on the Jones custom combine crew from Lincoln County. He later worked for Payne Motor Company in Beloit.

Virgil met his wife, Nancy Shaver, on a blind date. They were married on September 20, 1959 at the Jewell Christian Church in Jewell, Kansas and celebrated over 61 years together.

He retired from Fuller Chevrolet as an auto body repairman after working there for many years.

Virgil was a quiet man. He could repair or fix most things and liked to tinker in the garage for many hours during the day. He also liked to dismantle things to see how they were made. The grandkids enjoyed being in the garage with their Grandpa. They could usually find a small piece of board that he had left for them to pound on or use it to build something. Virgil liked to listen to polka music and watch Mollie B Polka Party on television. He liked old cars, trucks, and tractors.

For several years Virgil lived at Hilltop Lodge in Beloit. Some of his favorite things to do were music therapy, dudes coffee group, and wine Wednesday. He especially enjoyed going out to the courtyard and watching and feeding the peacocks, turtles and fish.

He is preceded in death by his Mother and Father, 3 sisters, Aileen Wilson-Spatz, Eula Wilson, twin sister Vonna Nelson, and brother, Dale English. Virgil is survived by his wife, Nancy of the home; daughter Elaine Mitchell (Terry) of Beloit, Kansas and Richard English (Michelle) of Beloit, Kansas. Grandchildren Jacob English (Jordan) of Virginia Beach, Virginia; Grant English of Manhattan, Kansas; Bethany Mitchell of Beloit, Kansas. Great-grandchildren Riley English and Astrid English of Virginia Beach, Virginia. One sister-in law Sandra Railsback of Smith Center, KS; cousins, and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be at 10 AM Saturday, February 27 at the Beloit First Christian Church. Cremation has taken place. Friends may sign the register book from 9 AM to 5 PM Friday at the Roberts Family Funeral Home. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Mitchell County Veterans Memorial, Mitchell County Regional Medical Foundation, or the Church.

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a shooting and have a suspect in custody.

Just after 6:30 p.m. Monday, police were dispatched to the 3000 block of SE 6th Street in Topeka after report a possible shooting, according to Lt. Kelvin Johnson. 

A private vehicle transported the victim to a local hospital where officers were able to speak with him. The victim had non-life threatening injuries from the shooting that was a result of an altercation between known individuals.

Later that night, the suspect voluntarily came to the Law Enforcement Center where he was interviewed by detectives. At the conclusion of the interview, Elias Martinez, 20 of Topeka, was booked into the Shawnee County Jail on requested charges of Aggravated Battery, Aggravated Assault, Criminal Damage to Property, Criminal Discharge of a Firearm at an Occupied Vehicle, and Unlawful Discharge of a firearm in the City Limits, according to Johnson.

Youth ages 7-18 will be able to purchase a Get On &amp; Go Spring Youth Bus Pass for $10.&nbsp;&nbsp;The pass will be good for unlimited rides on Salina CityGo from March 1 to May 31.&nbsp;&nbsp;Youth must show the drivers their Get On &amp; Go&nbsp; pass when they board the buses.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A summer pass will be available to purchase at a later date.

Helen May (Whitesell) Warnica, born to George H. and Nina S. Lacy Whitesell on Sept. 5, 1928 at Waterville, Kansas, and is one of eight children. She is preceded in death by her parents; her brothers: George Jr., Robert L., Melvin D., and Wayne L.; and her sisters: Jean Fairchild, Marie Davis, and one who died in infancy. Helen attended rural schools in the first two years at Waterville, KS. The family moved to Frankfort in 1936 and she attended 3rd through 8th and went to Frankfort High School. She married John Reich in 1946 to which five children were born—four sons and a daughter: Ron of Manhattan, KS; Terry of Payson, AZ; Tom of Heneryetta, OK; Jack of Abilene, KS; Anette Wright of Athens, GA. Helen worked as a clerk in a drug store, also as a waitress. After her daughter was born she had an in-home daycare in Manhattan for nine years. She worked at Cole's Department Store and JC Penny’s as a clerk and at the Wonder Bread thrift store in Manhattan. After John passed away in 1976, she moved back to Frankfort in 1978. She met her husband Emmett and they married in 1982. They had ten wonderful years together. He went to be with the Lord in April 1992. While in Frankfort, she belonged to the Frankfort United Methodist Church, RSVP for 21 years. She helped with Rotary dinners and funeral dinners. Helen belonged to American Legion Auxiliary 25 years, and Red Hats. She baked pies and goodies for neighbors and friends, and was known in Frankfort as the “Pie Lady.” She sold her home in Frankfort in 2013 and moved to Abilene, KS to be closer to family. Helen has 15 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren, She entered rest Feb. 20, 2021 in Abilene.

Services will be 11:00 am Wednesday, February 24, 2021 at the Barrett Cemetery near Frankfort, Kansas with Pastor Lindsey Brummer officiating. Friends may sign the register book until 8:00 pm Tuesday evening. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Dickinson County or to Meals on Wheels and may be sent in care of the funeral home.&nbsp;&nbsp;
