For the first time in its 37-year history, the Salina Spring Poetry Series is going virtual. 

Five local poets will read from their work via Zoom and YouTube, each Tuesday in April. The public is invited to reserve a spot to listen and interact with the poets.

The series is sponsored by Salina Arts &amp; Humanities and will feature Joe McKenzie and Lori Brack on April 6, Ruth Moritz on April 13, Harley Elliott on April 20, and series founder Patricia Traxler on April 27.

“This year’s format for the Spring Poetry Series needed to adapt due to the pandemic and its impact on the community,” said Brad Anderson, executive director of Salina Arts &amp; Humanities. “Shifting to a virtual event will allow the poets and audience to safely engage as they experience recent work by an exceptional group of poets.”

Local or far-away participants who wish to listen to the readings and ask questions will register for the event through Zoom web-based video conferencing, via a personal computer, tablet, or cell phone. To view each full session, web access to YouTube will also be necessary. Each Zoom event will begin on a Tuesday at 7 p.m CST. Traxler, whose writing has won national and international awards, founded the Poetry Series in 1984 when she served as Salina writer-in-residence. Since that time, the series has welcomed nearly 200 state and U.S. poets laureate, writers of national and regional significance, Salina writers, and regional new voices selected by series directors. After Traxler’s tenure as series director, Moritz directed the poetry readings for 17 years. McKenzie, then director of the Salina Public Library, made the selections for a year before he retired.

“Salina Arts &amp; Humanities staff and series organizers felt this was the perfect year to feature work by a diverse and well-qualified group of local poets, many of them who will be sharing recently published work,” Anderson said of the weekly series readings.

The line-up of poets for the 2021 Salina Poetry Series is as follows.

McKenzie is a writer who retired after a long career as a public librarian. He does freelance reporting and writes a column for the Salina Journal. His broad community involvement informs everything he writes. His first book of poems, At The Mercy of Ourselves, was released in 2019.

Brack is a freelance arts worker whose new book, A Case for the Dead Letter Detective, was published in February. She is also the author of Museum Made of Breath, published in 2018, and A Fine Place to See the Sky, a poetic script for a work of performance art by Ernesto Pujol, presented at the Salina Art Center in 2010. She is coordinating this year’s Poetry Series.

Moritz is a writer, an installation and graphic artist, and a retired educator. She received an MFA in Creative Writing from Wichita State University and is the winner of national awards for her poems and essays. She taught at the Ellsworth Correctional Facility, Kansas State University, and Kansas Wesleyan University.

Elliott is the author of 11 poetry collections, including two books published in 2020: The Mercy of Distance: New and Selected Poems and Creature Way. He is also the author and illustrator of a children’s book and a memoir. Elliott taught art at Marymount College for 13 years and served as education coordinator at the Salina Art Center until his retirement.

Traxler is the author of a novel, Blood, the short story collection In the Skin, published in 2020, and four poetry collections including the 2019 Kansas Book Award winner Naming the Fires. She was twice named the Bunting Poetry Fellow at Radcliffe, and she has read her award-winning poetry at many universities.

Books by the poets will be available for purchase at Ad Astra Books &amp; Coffee House, 141 North Santa Fe Avenue, at least a week before the series begins.

WICHITA – The arrival of Daylight Saving Time this weekend means one less hour of sleep and the potential for more sleepy drivers on the road.

 AAA Kansas is reminding drivers to adjust your clock and your sleeping habits to make sure you are alert behind the wheel.

According to a study by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, the percentage of crashes involving drowsiness is nearly eight times higher than federal estimates. The difficulty in detecting drowsiness following a crash makes drowsy driving one of the most underreported traffic safety issues.

"When the clocks change, sleep cycles are interrupted and drivers can be more tired than they realize," said Shawn Steward, spokesman for AAA Kansas.&nbsp;"Losing one hour of sleep takes an adjustment and motorists need to prepare by getting more rest, especially on Sunday."

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that 35% of U.S. drivers sleep less than the recommended minimum of seven hours daily. In AAA’s study, nearly all drivers (96 percent) say they view drowsy driving as a serious threat to their safety and a completely unacceptable behavior. However, 29 percent admitted to driving when they were so tired they had a hard time keeping their eyes open at some point in the past month.

"As many Americans struggle to balance their busy schedules, missing a few hours of sleep each day can often seem harmless," Steward added. "But missing just two to three hours of sleep can more than quadruple your risk for a crash, which is the equivalent of driving drunk."

Knowing the warning signs of drowsiness can help drivers avoid dozing off behind the wheel. The most common symptoms include:

●Having trouble keeping your eyes open. 

●Not remembering the last few miles driven

Drivers however should not rely on their bodies to provide warning signs for drowsiness and should instead prioritize getting at least seven hours of sleep before hitting the road.

●Travel at times of the day when they are normally awake. 

●Avoid medications that cause drowsiness or other impairment

●Schedule a break every two hours or every 100 miles. 

●Travel with an alert passenger and take turns driving. 

●Do not underestimate the power of a quick nap. Pulling into a rest stop and taking a quick catnap―at least 20 minutes and no more than 30 minutes of sleep―can help to keep you alert on the road.

Darker morning 'commute' increases risk for pedestrians/students

The other issue increasing risk with the time change is darkness. The Monday morning commute, and the morning commute for several weeks to come, will be much darker than what drivers are used to, a serious concern because 76% of pedestrian fatalities happen when it’s dark, according to&nbsp;<a href="http://aaacluballiance.pr-optout.com/Tracking.aspx?Data=HHL%3d844280-%3eLCE59.%3c5%3a%26SDG%3c90%3a.&amp;RE=MC&amp;RI=5430239&amp;Preview=False&amp;DistributionActionID=383405&amp;Action=Follow+Link" target="_blank">findings</a>&nbsp;from the Governor’s Highway Safety Association (GHSA) released in February 2020.

Seasonal transitions not only can mean lack of sleep, but also allergy issues. AAA wants to warn motorists to be mindful of how medications taken to cure the seasonal flare-ups may impair their ability to drive, causing drowsiness. SEDGWICK COUNTY—A suspect involved in a fatal shooting&nbsp; is now in the Sedgwick County jail after moved from the hospital.

Just after 6:30p.m. Wednesday, deputies booked 26-year-old DeAdrian Johnson on requested charges of first-degree murder, according to<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=20048028"> online jail records.&nbsp;</a>

Just after 11:15p.m. March 6, police responded to report of a shooting in the 1000 Block of North Volutstia in Wichita, according to Police Captain Jason Stephens.

At the scene, officers located Johnson, Christopher Terrell and a 16-year-old with gunshot wounds. Though their investigation, police learned Johnson had been using drugs.&nbsp; He shot and killed Terrell, wounded the 16-year-old and then turned the gun on himself, according to Captain Stephens.

Police arrested Johnson and are monitored him during his hospitalization.

The Petersfield, Jamaica, native ended the season with six all-time top-10 marks to his ledger, including the second-best heave of 18.92m (62-1), recorded at the KJCCC Invitational on Jan. 31 on his was to NJCAA Region VI and NJCAA Indoor Titles.&nbsp; &nbsp;

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for alleged animal cruelty and have made an arrest.

Just after 8p.m. Tuesday, police filed a report for theft, criminal damage to property and cruelty to animals in the 2800 block of W. 61st Avenue in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 39-year-old victim reported a 29-year-old male suspect put detergent in a fish tank resulting in the death of all coral and fish contained inside, and stole miscellaneous items. 

Police arrested&nbsp; 29-year-old Taylor Morris on requested charges of criminal damage to property, theft, and cruelty to animals. He is being held in the Riley County Jail on a total bond of $6,000.00, according to the RCPD booking report.

Keith Henry Lauer ascended to his heavenly home on Thursday, March 4th at Abilene Memorial Hospital. He was born on July 15, 1936 to Clarence &amp; Alma (Nagely) Lauer in Abilene. He attended Bell Valley, a one room school, in Holland, KS and Chapman High School graduating in the class of 1954. In high school his interests included FFA, playing trumpet in band and playing football. It was there a good friend, Dale, introduced Keith to his sister, Nadene. On August 5, 1956, Keith married his high school sweetheart, Nadene Correll, in McPherson, KS. His passion for agriculture started early in life. As a youth he was a member of the Holland Sunflowers 4-H Club. He participated in a variety of projects, but key was the opportunity to expand his livestock interests which paved the way for his profession. Years of 4-H work earned him a trip to the National 4-H Congress in Washington D.C. Throughout his life he remained supportive of the 4-H program and the Central Kansas Free Fair. As a young farmer Keith received one of the Outstanding Young Farmer awards. He was recognized as Builder of the Breed by the Shorthorn Association. Keith &amp; Nadene were a part of the Class of 1990 Kansas Master Farmer Homemakers. Keith and Nadene hosted multiple Shorthorn tour groups including the World Shorthorn Tour. In 2017 the National Western Stock Show dedicated the Shorthorn pen show to them. Keith received the Heritage Award from the American Shorthorn Association in 2019. Throughout his life Keith was an active member of the Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church where he served well on various boards and committees. He was called to be an Elder for many years. He served his community by being a board member for the Coop, County Extension Council, and township treasurer for 35 years. He was born on July 15, 1936 to Clarence &amp; Alma (Nagely) Lauer in Abilene. He attended Bell Valley, a one room school, in Holland, KS and Chapman High School graduating in the class of 1954. In high school his interests included FFA, playing trumpet in band and playing football. It was there a good friend, Dale, introduced Keith to his sister, Nadene. On August 5, 1956, Keith married his high school sweetheart, Nadene Correll, in McPherson, KS. His passion for agriculture started early in life. As a youth he was a member of the Holland Sunflowers 4-H Club. He participated in a variety of projects, but key was the opportunity to expand his livestock interests which paved the way for his profession. Years of 4-H work earned him a trip to the National 4-H Congress in Washington D.C. Throughout his life he remained supportive of the 4-H program and the Central Kansas Free Fair. As a young farmer Keith received one of the Outstanding Young Farmer awards. He was recognized as Builder of the Breed by the Shorthorn Association. Keith &amp; Nadene were a part of the Class of 1990 Kansas Master Farmer Homemakers. Keith and Nadene hosted multiple Shorthorn tour groups including the World Shorthorn Tour. In 2017 the National Western Stock Show dedicated the Shorthorn pen show to them. Keith received the Heritage Award from the American Shorthorn Association in 2019. Throughout his life Keith was an active member of the Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church where he served well on various boards and committees. He was called to be an Elder for many years. He served his community by being a board member for the Coop, County Extension Council, and township treasurer for 35 years. With the sub-state round of the state playoffs in the books, the NCAA has released its all-league teams, featuring three Southeast of Saline Trojans on the first team and two more on the second-team.

First team All-NCAA honors go to Trojan senior Jaxson Gebhardt, and a pair of SES sophomores in Nakari Morrical-Palmer and Eli Sawyers.

In his final season in the purple and white, Gebhardt averaged 12 points, three rebounds and two assists per game, and was undoubtedly one of the peskiest defenders in the league.

Morrical-Palmer and Sawyers, who will return to the team next season, added 23 points per game to the mix and were first and second on the team in rebounds hauling in 14 boards per game between them.

Collecting All-NCAA second team honors were two more Southeast seniors in Camden Spano-Lund and Bryant Banks.

Spano-Lund averaged double digit scoring for the Trojans in their 2020-21 campaign while Banks made his contributions doing the dirty work for SES, and playing in a number of different roles throughout the season.

The Trojans finished their 2020-21 campaign 14-8 and 7-2 in league play. They are also the only team in the North Central Activities Association to have five representatives among the all-league first and second teams.

Bonita M. (Linenberger) Schulte, age 77, of Salina, Kansas, died Monday, March 8, 2021, at her home.

She was born October 7, 1943, in Hays, Kansas to Bonavent and Gertrude (Beck)-Brungardt Linenberger.&nbsp; She married Gary M. Schulte on September 5, 1966, at Victoria, Kansas.

She operated a beauty shop in Victoria from 1962 till 1966 and moved to Hays in&nbsp; 1967.&nbsp; She was a 1961 graduate of&nbsp; Victoria High School, a homemaker, a former member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays.&nbsp; She and Gary moved to Salina in&nbsp; 2004, and was a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Salina.&nbsp; She helped start the TMP Booster Club, enjoyed playing card games, spending time with family, and being there for her grandchildren’s sporting activities.

Survivors include her husband, Gary M. Schulte, of the home; two sons, Travis Schulte and wife, Brandi, Lenexa, KS; Troy Schulte and wife, Sharon, Hays, KS; one daughter, Toni Juenemann and husband, Wayne, Salina, KS; one brother, John Linenberger and wife, Marlene, Manhattan, KS; two sisters-in-law, Carol Linenberger and Norma Linenberger, both of Salina; eight grandchildren, Taylor Schulte; Austin Schulte; Jordan Hixon and husband, Nick; Jackson Schulte; Jaden Schulte; Drake Juenemann; Ashley Juenemann; Joshua Juenemann.

She was preceded in death by her parents; seven brothers, Edwin, Gilbert, Dennis, Verlin, Thomas, Leo, and Patrick Linenberger; three sisters, Henrietta Giebler, Doris Younger-Pfeifer, Virginita Linenberger; and one infant brother, Clarence Linenberger.

Services are 11:00 A.M. Thursday, March 11, 2021, at The Basilica of St. Fidelis, Victoria, Kansas.&nbsp; Burial in St. Fidelis Cemetery, Victoria, Kansas.

A vigil service and rosary will be at 7:30 P.M. Wednesday, at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays.
