Phyllis June Goering, 90, of McPherson, KS, passed away at 10:35 p.m., Wednesday, March 31, 2021, peacefully, at Pine Village, Moundridge. Phyllis was born in McPherson, Kansas on August 1, 1930, a daughter of Mildred Helene (Casstevens) and Lester A. Brown. Phyllis attended Roosevelt grade school, McPherson Junior High, and graduated from McPherson High School, McPherson, Kansas, in 1948. She then attended one year at McPherson College, McPherson, Kansas, before transferring to Kansas State University at Manhattan, Kansas, where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority. She was a member of First Mennonite Church, McPherson, Kansas. Phyllis was baptized upon her confession of faith at McPherson Methodist Episcopal Church and transferred to First Mennonite Church after her marriage to Lyle. She served the church singing in the choir, teaching an adult Sunday school class, and was Chairman of Trustees for eight years. Phyllis was a homemaker and she took great pride in providing for her family in this manner. Through the years she worked in her Dad's grocery store till senior year and then went to work at Hubel's Drug Store and Miller's Printing and Book Store. She later worked at Hinkles Department Store, McPherson Citizen's State Bank in the bookkeeping department, McPherson Farm Sale Barn, and Sterling-Winthrop Pharmaceutical retiring from Sanofi Drug. She was a member of Tri-Delta, Beta Omicron Sorority, Hospice, and Trustee at MCDS for 6 years. Phyllis enjoyed playing bridge, gardening, race walking, and spending time with her family and friends. She also volunteered her time and talent with Hospice, the Red Cross and MCDS. Phyllis June Brown was united in marriage to Lyle Gene Goering on September 15, 1950 at McPherson, Kansas. She is survived by her children, Patsy Jean Heibert, of McPherson, Kansas, Joleen Sue Casebeer and husband Dennis, of rural Galva, Kansas, Janet Lynn Frans, of McPherson, Kansas, and Gene Allen Goering, of McPherson, Kansas; her 10 grandchildren, Bobbi Jo Ireton and husband Matt, Justin Alan Bickford and wife Carrie, Angela Christine Hall, Jennifer Marie Mizell, Julie Nicole Fiedler and husband Shane, Jesse Aaron Casebeer, Joshua Ray Frans, Joseph Tazwell Frans, Cassidy Lynn Goering, and Jared Peter Goering; 25 great-grandchildren, Bryson James Hall, Zachary Bickford, Alexander Patton Hall, Nicole Jean Casebeer, Adrain Chantel Casebeer, Jordan Ashley Girkin, Haley Jane Girkin, Collin Davis Bickford, Grace Mizell, June Mizell, Cainin Stanley St. John, Caiden Bickford, Mali Bree Casebeer, Axell Jett Casebeer, Kimber Fiedler, Brailey Odon, Ashley Odon, Sam Ireton, Daryn Ireton, and Katie Fiedler; other relatives and a host of friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lyle Goering; a brother, Donald Brown; a grandson, Austin Bickford; a granddaughter, Heather Frans; and a son-in-law, Dennis Frans. Visitation will be on Friday, April 9, 2021 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Glidden - Ediger Chapel, McPherson, Kansas. Funeral service will be held at First Mennonite Church, McPherson, Kansas, at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 10, 2021 with Pastor Rose Marie Zook Barber officiating. Georgia Faye Goodheart, 92, of Beloit passed away Tuesday, March 9th at the Mitchell County hospital.

She was born to parents Elbert W. and Eula Maude (Genson) Morrison in Corning, IA on February 13, 1929.&nbsp; The family moved back to Missouri before she was 2 years old.

Georgia, as she was called when young, grew up on a farm near Plattsburg, MO.&nbsp; She graduated from Plattsburg High School in 1947.&nbsp; After high school she lived and worked in St Joseph, MO including jobs at a candy factory and a factory which made Christmas tree lights.

Faye, as she was called for most of her adult life, moved to Russell, KS and worked as a book keeper at the local Studebaker dealership and later the local Cadillac dealership.&nbsp; It was in Russell that she met William H. Goodheart.&nbsp; They were married September 22, 1956.

After living in Russell, Bill and Faye moved, to follow Bill's career, to Prairie View and Beloit, KS, then to Sioux Falls, SD before moving to Rapid City, SD, where they made their home for 32 years.

Faye was active in her churches, helping with funeral dinners and bible studies, especially at Trinity Lutheran while they lived in Rapid City.

She had a great love and talent for sewing.&nbsp; For many years she made most of her family's clothes, including even Bill's suit coats and pants.

In their retirement Bill and Faye were volunteers with the Pennington County Sheriff's department community volunteer program and they enjoyed a few years traveling in the southwest in their 5th wheel camper during winter months.

In 2010, due to declining health, Bill and Faye moved to the Hilltop Lodge Independent Living facility in Beloit, KS to be closer to family.&nbsp; Faye had been living the last couple of years in the Hilltop Assisted Living facility.

Faye was preceded in death by her husband Bill, in 2012, her parents, her brother Elbert, Jr (Bill) and sister-in-law, Lois (Faye) Morrison.

She is survived by her son Todd (Lisa) of Glen Elder, nieces Sherry Farwell (Howard), Kathy Ralston (Trevor) and Kristy Morrison, and nephew Scott Morrison, all of Kansas City, MO, also in-law nephews and cousins on the Goodheart family side, and many friends in all the places she'd lived.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 7 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Beloit. A graveside service will take place at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Bunker Hill Cemetery in Bunker Hill. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Summer Kids Cafe.

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man on multiple charges following a traffic stop.

Just after 11a.m. April 1,&nbsp;a sheriff's deputy conducted a traffic stop on a black 1995 Mazda pickup truck in the 3000 block of SE Croco Road, according to Deputy Abigail Christian. 

The driver’s side windshield was smashed. The truck came back stolen, according to the Topeka Police Department. 

During the investigation, deputies located illegal narcotics and drug paraphernalia. They also arrested the driver, Christopher J. Obier, 33, of Topeka.

He was booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of stolen property, driving without a valid license and obstructed windshield, according to Christian.

Tony's Pizza Events Center announced today that the Tarzan Zerbini Circus will be back for three action-packed days of fun family entertainment, April 30-May 2! You won’t want to miss the talents of the many performers and enjoy the animals, daredevils and aerialists, elephant rides, clowns, face painting, and more.

“The Shrine Circus has been a Salina family tradition for nearly 70 years,” said Susan Trafton, general manager of Tony’s Pizza Events Center. “Throughout the past year members of the Isis Shrine of Salina and our staff have been working through the challenges of hosting events safely while protecting our guests and staff from COVID-19. The Shriners felt in 2021 they wanted to be involved but on a lessor level, giving our staff the opportunity to keep this family-friendly event and work with the Shriners to make that happen.”

The Isis Shrine of Salina will be on hand to sell coloring books. All proceeds from coloring book sales fund the mission of the Shriners Hospitals for Children - to assist families of children that require treatment for orthopedics, burn care, cleft lip and palates, spinal cord injuries and other injuries or traumas. The Isis Shrine Temple was established in 1887.

Advance tickets are $10 for kids ages 2-12, and $18 for Adults. Ticket prices increase $2 on the day-of-show.

Tarzan Zerbini Circus returning to Tony's Pizza Events Center

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a woman for an April Fool's Day&nbsp; prank.

Just after 8:30 a.m. Thursday, police responded to report of a shooting at a home in the 4800 block of East Arlene in Wichita, according to officer Charley Davidson.&nbsp; Multiple officers responded to the call along with the Wichita Fire Department and Sedgwick County EMS.&nbsp;

Officers surrounded the home, blocked streets, and attempted to make contact with anyone inside.&nbsp; After they were not able to contact anyone, officers wearing shields and with weapons drawn, broke down the door.

Through further investigation, it was learned that&nbsp; 58-year-old Arnthia Willis of Wichita  had called a family member claiming to be shot as an April fool’s joke. The family member called 911. 

Police in Derby located Willis and arrested her without incident.

Willis was booked and remained in jail overnight on a charge of unlawful request for emergency service assistance in violation of K.S.A. 21-6207(b3), according to Davidson.&nbsp;

Wichita Polict Lt. Ron Hunt said the prank was dangerous and the woman could face charges. The case will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office.

Salina Arts &amp; Humanities is launching a Kansas Literacy
Festival program this month. 

The Salina
Storytelling Project is a pilot program and an effort to strengthen the community’s
literacy and social-emotional growth through listening, discussion, and
reading. Salina Arts &amp; Humanities is one of 10 digital partners with
Wichita-based Storytime Village, the entity leading the statewide initiative featuring
projects taking place from February to September, culminating in the Kansas
Literacy Festival in September 2021. 

For the Salina Storytelling
Project, SAH staff worked with four community storytellers and three coaching
artists who supported the novice storytellers in preparing their story for
video recording. Each week in April, one storytelling video will be released
through YouTube and shared over social media. 

During the last week of the Salina
Storytelling Project, on April 29 at 7 p.m., a community discussion
about the project will take place, featuring a panel of local storytellers and
coaches, plus a Q&amp;A time. 

The community is invited to watch each storytelling video
as they are released via YouTube and shared on Salina Arts &amp; Humanities
social media, then register to attend the culminating Zoom event on April 29. Email

to encourage early learning, family engagement, and access to books.

Arts & Humanities launching Salina Storytelling Project

JACKSON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating three suspect on drug charges after a traffic stop.

&nbsp;Shortly before 4 pm Tuesday,  a Sheriff’s deputy stopped a 1995 Chevrolet Blazer near 150th and U.S. Highway 75 for an alleged registration violation, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

Further investigation during the traffic stop led to the discovery of drug paraphernalia. 

The occupants of the vehicle were arrested by deputies. The driver, Ronald Jeffery Bonham, 38, of Topeka, is being held on a requested charge of possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.

 A passenger, Andre Carlos Brown, 31, of Topeka, was arrested on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.

Another passenger, Tiffany Lynn Williams, 43, of Topeka, was arrested on a requested charge of possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. All three suspects were booked into the Jackson County Jail, according to Morse.

Sheriff: 3 caught with drugs during Kan. traffic stop

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating an officer shooting and have identified the suspect as 35-year-old Jennifer Miller of Wichita, according to Police Captain Jason Stephens.

Just before 9a.m. Wednesday, two police officers were proactively checking the Red Roof Inn, 7335 East Kellogg and Sky Palace, 7321 East Kellogg after numerous calls and complaints over several months involving assaults, burglaries, drugs, stolen cars, underage parties and other things that would constitute a nuisance to the neighborhood and the businesses.

While checking the businesses, the officers saw a stolen Subaru Legacy behind the Red Roof Inn. The car had been reported stolen on Tuesday. As they approached the car, they saw Miller enter the car's trunk, grab items and walk toward her room at the Sky Palace.

The Earl Bane Foundation has awarded a $3,200 grant to the Salina Education Foundation. Grant funds will be used to purchase library books for each of USD 305’s elementary school libraries. 

“We are very thankful for the Earl Bane Foundation’s generosity. This gift allows each of our eight elementary school libraries to purchase 20-30 books featuring unique and diverse characters,” said Michael Chambers, Salina Education Foundation’s executive director.

The 37th Spring Poetry Series, sponsored by Salina Arts &amp; Humanities, opens on Tuesday with online readings by poets Joe McKenzie and Lori Brack.

McKenzie says, “Stuff happens constantly and I try to have a poetic response to it.” He calls his poems “observational free verse narratives of the world, everyday life and people, and their dogs.” He will read from his 2019 book At the Mercy of Ourselves, as well as newer work that emerged from the confluence of the theme of the book and the COVID-19 pandemic.

McKenzie will be joined by poet Lori Brack, who will read from her new book A Case for the Dead Letter Detective that features poems about an imagined and simultaneously real character, along with newer and older work. “Being outside in the back yard, down the street in a wheat field, sitting in the grass, and reading are what I am made of. I wish I was drawn to write more politically, but really, I’d rather remember and imagine,” Brack says.

Three other local poets – Ruth Moritz, Harley Elliott, and series founder Patricia Traxler will read from their work via Zoom and YouTube on remaining Tuesdays in April.

“This year’s format for the Spring Poetry Series needed to adapt due to the pandemic and its impact on the community,” says Brad Anderson, executive director of Salina Arts &amp; Humanities. “Shifting to a virtual event will allow the poets and audience to safely engage as they experience recent work by an exceptional group of poets.”

Joe McKenzie is a writer who retired after a
long career as a public librarian in Salina. He does freelance reporting and a
column for The Salina Journal, and
also writes children’s stories. McKenzie grew up in Philadelphia and went to
colleges in Pennsylvania, Kansas, and Colorado. His connection with the Spring
Poetry Series goes back to his work as director of the Salina Public Library,
which used to co-sponsor the series. McKenzie is a 2006 New Voice award winner
and has been a Poetry Series reader. His active community involvement informs
everything he writes. McKenzie is married to Mary Lou and has two sons and two

Brack is a freelance arts worker and the
author of Museum Made of Breath,
published in 2018, and A Fine Place to

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a violent attack and have a suspect in custody.

Just after&nbsp;9:30 a.m. Wednesday, police were dispatched to the area of SE 10th Ave. and SE Branner Trafficway in Topeka on a report of a stabbing, according to police spokesperson Gretchen Spiker.

Upon arrival, officers located an adult female victim with injuries believed to be consistent with a stabbing.&nbsp;American Medical Response transported her to a local hospital for treatment of&nbsp;non-life threatening injuries.

A short time later, officers located the suspect identified as Sean A. Coble, 31 of Topeka in the 1900 block of SE Adams Street. They arrested and booked him into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections for Aggravated Battery.

The victim and suspect are known to one another and the incident is believed to be domestic in nature, according to police.

Kansas man jailed after violent knife attack on woman

WILSON COUNTY –&nbsp;The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI), the United States Postal Inspection Service (USPIS), the Fredonia Police Department, and the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office arrested two individuals this week related to the distribution of illegal narcotics.

Just after 5p.m. Tuesday, authorities conducted search warrants at 811 N. 15th&nbsp;Street in Fredonia, according to a media release from the KBI.

Methamphetamine, with an approximate street value of $24,000, as well as marijuana and other narcotics were discovered. They also located over $9,000 in cash.

Andrew D. Black, 38, of Fredonia was arrested on requested charges of possession with the intent to sell methamphetamine, possession with the intent to sell marijuana, possession with the intent to sell narcotics, possession of drug sales paraphernalia, and possession of drug use paraphernalia.

Stephanie M. Hanson, 21, also of Fredonia, was arrested on requested charges of possession with the intent to sell methamphetamine, possession with the intent to sell marijuana, possession with the intent to sell narcotics, possession of drug sales paraphernalia, and possession of drug use paraphernalia.

Following their arrests, Black and Hanson were booked into the Wilson County Jail.&nbsp;

The joint operation represented a coordinated law enforcement effort to reduce the accessibility of illegal drugs impacting southeast Kansas.

 </figure>WILSON COUNTY –&nbsp;The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI), the United States Postal Inspection Service (USPIS), the Fredonia Police Department, and the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office arrested two individuals this week related to the distribution of illegal narcotics.Just after 5p.m. Tuesday, authorities conducted search warrants at 811 N. 15th&nbsp;Street in Fredonia, according to a media release from the KBI.Methamphetamine, with an approximate street value of $24,000, as well as marijuana and other narcotics were discovered. They also located over $9,000 in cash.Andrew D. Black, 38, of Fredonia was arrested on requested charges of possession with the intent to sell methamphetamine, possession with the intent to sell marijuana, possession with the intent to sell narcotics, possession of drug sales paraphernalia, and possession of drug use paraphernalia.<figure>

Hanson, 21, also of Fredonia, was arrested on requested charges of possession with the intent to sell methamphetamine, possession with the intent to sell marijuana, possession with the intent to sell narcotics, possession of drug sales paraphernalia, and possession of drug use paraphernalia.Following their arrests, Black and Hanson were booked into the Wilson County Jail.&nbsp;The joint operation represented a coordinated law enforcement effort to reduce the accessibility of illegal drugs impacting southeast Kansas.

TOPEKA —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a violent domestic incident and after asking the public for help to locate&nbsp; a suspect now have 34-year-old Stefon C. Butler in custody.

On Tuesday evening, Butler turned himself in to authorities, according to Lt. Shane Hilton.

 He was&nbsp;booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of Aggravated battery, Aggravated assault, Rape and Criminal Restraint.

On March 24, police responded to the 1300 block of SW Lincoln Street in Topeka on a report of a violent domestic disturbance.

Throughout the course of the investigation, Butler had been identified as a person of interest in this incident.

Police: After a week, Kan. rape suspect turns himself in

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A Kansas woman accused of in a hit and run shooting made her first court appearance Tuesday.

Charity Blackmon, 31, is charged with Murder in the 1st degree and criminal possession of a weapon by a felon, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

Just before 4:30 p.m. March 26, police were dispatched to 13th&nbsp;Street North and Oliver Avenue for a shooting call, according to officer Paul Cruz. Upon arriving, they located&nbsp;54-year-old <a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/2blv6y22g0?qid=7f0e4807b16464f4303f8d95ed764ff1">Merrill Rabus of Wichita</a> unconscious and receiving life-saving measures.

Rabus had undetermined injuries, including what appeared to be a single gunshot wound. He was transported to an area hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

The investigation revealed Rabus was on his bicycle at the intersection of 13th&nbsp;Street North and Oliver Avenue when he was struck by a white Plymouth van driven by 31-year-old Charity Blackmon. 

Blackmon then got out of her vehicle and fired a shot from a handgun, striking Rabus. Blackmon fled the scene and was followed by witnesses who provided her location. She was located and arrested at 14th&nbsp;Street North and Green Street by a Wichita State University police officer, according to Cruz.

 Blackmon and Rabus were not known to each other. Officers also recovered a handgun through this investigation.&nbsp;

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Authorities say a bicyclist is dead after a woman struck him with her van as he crossed a Wichita street and then apparently shot him. 

&nbsp;Charity Charmon Blackmon, 31,&nbsp; was booked into jail Friday night on suspicion of first-degree murder, driving with a suspended license, unsafe turning or stopping and failure to give proper signal. 

Wichita police chief Gordon Ramsay said the victim was either riding or walking his bicycle when he was hit Friday afternoon. Ramsay said the initial reports were that the suspect got out to shoot the man after the crash. 

Ramsay said police would know definitively if he was shot after an autopsy. The man’s name wasn’t immediately released.

(AP) — One of the Kansas Legislature’s most powerful lawmakers is eligible to be paid nearly $500 every two weeks he remains in leadership while he fights charges of driving under the influence and trying to elude law enforcement.The payments can continue even though Kansas Senate Majority Leader Gene Suellentrop turned over the bulk of his duties before he was charged&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/53d21c4172c5cd87cbeaec02c0dcb882" target="_blank">Friday</a>&nbsp;in the March 16 incident in Topeka. But he has given no indication he plans to resign or give up his prestigious leadership position, meaning he continues to hold powers that can’t be delegated and remains influential.Senate President Ty Masterson, an Andover Republican and business partner of Suellentrop, has made clear he doesn’t plan to pressure the senator to step down.As majority leader, Suellentrop receives an allowance of $487. 14 every two weeks during his term of office. The sum is in addition to up to about $200 a day in pay and allowances lawmakers receive during session.Suellentrop’s chief of staff, Eric Rucker, didn’t respond to questions on Tuesday, including whether the senator is still accepting compensation paid to the majority leader. Suellentrop himself was absent from the Senate on Monday.
