Jack Doan, 66, passed away Friday April 30, 2021 at home surrounded by family.&nbsp; He was born April 4, 1955 to the late Frank and Peggy Doan.&nbsp; Jack worked for Philips Lighting for 15 years and while doing so earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Benedictine College than a master’s degree in business from Kansas Wesleyan University.&nbsp; He worked for the Internal Revenue Service for 14 years retiring in 2018.

Jack is survived by his wife, Margaret Doan; son, Russell LaRue; daughter, Jordanne and Jeremy Gerdes; granddaughters, Jessalyn and Jillian Gerdes; brother, Dave and Janice Doan; nephew, David and Chris Doan; brother, Frank and Karla Doan; niece, Kaycee and Kyle Crouthers; nephew, Kale Krum; and mother-in-law, Margaret Book.

At his request, Jack will be cremated with a private family service.&nbsp; In Jack’s memory please do a random act of kindness for others.

A hundred years ago this month, 16-year-old Mary White struck her head on a low-hanging limb while riding her horse in Emporia, slid dazed from the saddle, staggered a bit and fell unconscious to the ground. The accident did not surprise anyone who knew her, for Mary was a rambunctious girl who rode horses and drove cars with the same reckless intensity; she’d already had a few mishaps that left more than her pride bruised.

On that Tuesday afternoon, Mary was riding a skittish mare named Hardtack. Having changed from school clothes to her riding khakis, she aimed as usual for the green country roads north of Emporia. But on Merchant Street — about where the parking lot of the Emporia State University library is now — she was distracted by the passing of a high school friend, a boy delivering copies of the Emporia Gazette on bicycle. Mary turned to wave, but she apparently used her bridle hand, which caused Hardtack to dart from the road and plunge beneath a catalpa tree. Still turned to wave, Mary may not have seen — or could not avoid — the collision with the fatal branch.

Mary was taken to the White family’s temporary home in Emporia, where she lay unconscious in the front room. The family’s large home (“<a href="https://www.kshs.org/p/red-rocks-home-of-the-william-allen-white-family/19569">Red Rocks</a>,” named for Estes Park, their favorite Colorado vacation spot) was undergoing renovation. Her father, editor William Allen White, was back east on business. He was informed of the accident by telegram, and the tone suggested it was just another of Mary’s accidents — but her mother, Sallie, declared the “Horse absolutely has to go.”

When Mary’s condition did not improve, her doctor X-rayed her head, revealing a skull fracture.

William Allen White was en route back to Emporia and received the news by telegram in Chicago. Her funeral was held that Monday at the First Congregational Church at Emporia, and the next day her father sat in his office at the Gazette and hammered out on his typewriter&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kshs.org/kansapedia/mary-white-obituary/10159">an editorial about his late daughter</a>. The piece is remarkable in that White describes his daughter’s life with emotion, but without resorting to much sentimentality.

Mary White, nearly 17, comes to us as a real person, “as full of faults as an old shoe.” She struggled with her grades, cared little about clothes, and joined the Congregational Church not because of any particular religious conviction but because she felt it was the best way to help people. “She hungered and thirsted for righteousness,” her father recalled, “and was the most impious creature in the world.”

She loved Twain and Dickens and Wells, was an aspiring cartoonist, worked on the high school yearbook and had a sharply mocking sense of humor. She had many friends, both white and Black, and fought to give the “colored” students at her high school a lounge so that they could study in comfort as easily as the white children. She chaired a committee to make sure the poor at the county home had a proper Christmas dinner. She delighted in giving equal opportunity rides in the family car.

She was a tomboy, her father tells us, who preferred her hair in pigtails rather than a more grown-up cut because she could get away with more mischief. On the day of her death, she had been called to the principal’s office — for lampooning, in a piece of art, the principal. Her male friends ranged from newsboys to university professors, including her Latin instructor, William L. Holt, who was among her pallbearers.

“Above every other passion of her life was her passion not to grow up, to be a child,” William Allen White said.

Newspapers across the county picked up White’s editorial (often wrongly called an obituary) and it was soon reprinted in magazines, anthologized and used in dozens of textbooks. For decades, it was required reading for many Kansas high school students. In addition to being a mostly clear-eyed tribute to a lost daughter, White’s piece is remarkable for its discussion of race in a time when the Ku Klux Klan was a powerful political machine that paraded in hoods down the main streets of many Kansas towns.

If there is a place in the editorial where White allowed his fatherly love to overcome his journalistic instincts, it may be where he claimed that Mary had no interest in boys and did not want to grow up. This is gently pointed out in a remarkable and authoritatively researched 2010 children’s book, “<a href="https://www.watermarkbooks.com/product/prairie-peter-pan-story-mary-white">A Prairie Peter Pan: The Story of Mary White</a>,” by&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2020/10/31/when-real-american-william-allen-white-ran-for-office-to-save-kansas-from-the-kkk/">Beverley Olson Buller</a>.

“At 16, Mary acted much as she always had,” Buller writes. “But friends noticed small changes. One friend saw Mary with a boy from out of town. To another, Mary showed an interest in face cream. She wrote an essay in language class suggesting girls pay on dates with boys.”

Having a famous father also seems to have been a source of inner conflict for Mary.

“I’m sick and tired of being William Allen White’s daughter,” she once told a teacher, according to Buller. Her privilege was such that, at her birth, President Theodore Roosevelt telegrammed the family congratulations from the White House. At the time of her death, she had already been accepted to Wellesley. The exclusive women’s college dedicated its 1926 yearbook — the year Mary would have graduated — to her memory.

Yet, despite the good fortune to be born to a famous family, there is something about Mary White’s adventurous and sometimes rebellious nature that bridges class divisions.

Here was a generous and reckless and puckish soul who was taken, by bad luck and her own folly, on the very cusp of adulthood. Death is the great equalizer among families. We feel a tinge of panic in reading of Mary White’s death, even so long after the fact, because no amount of money or influence can claw back those we loved from the undiscovered country.

I have a slight connection to Holt — the pallbearer and Latin teacher — because I own what was his house on Constitution Street. Mary might have come here to visit Bill and his wife, Martha. The house is a rambling Princess Anne, and the intervening century has not been kind, but there is comfort in the stained glass that remains above the large square windows in the parlor and living rooms; both are art nouveau designs of torches of knowledge that are flanked by fleurs-de-lis. When the sun is low in the west and the windows illuminated by shafts of distant fire, it is difficult to walk past without pausing at their beauty.

I wonder if Bill Holt — or even his friend, young Mary White — on some long-ago evening also paused and reflected on the meaning of those blazing torches. Would she have felt the same? Books were important to her, so perhaps.

One of the best photos of Mary shows her leaning against a stone column, at the entrance of some serious building, an open book in her hands. You can see a near life-size cutout of the photo at the visitor’s center at Red Rocks, which is now a state historic site at Emporia. During tours of the home you will see a few items that belonged to Mary — riding gloves, as I recall, and a few pieces of schoolgirl art — and see the room that was being remodeled for her.

We don’t know what Mary would have become if she had survived that ill-fated ride in 1921. She may have lived up to the promise of her station and talent, or not. I’ve always suspected she was more of a hellion than has been popularly portrayed, particularly in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Mary-White-Ed-Flanders/dp/B08XWPJMY6/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&amp;keywords=mary+white&amp;qid=1619802356&amp;s=instant-video&amp;sr=1-1">1977 made-for-television movie</a>&nbsp;with Kathleen Beller in the title role. But what we do know about her, from the editorial eulogy and other clues, is that — like her father — she refused to look away from the injustices of her day.

A hundred years later, we need more of that youthful activism now. The injustices that drove Mary White to help feed the poor and advocate for equality remain. As we carry her life story into a new century, we should remember what was important to this impulsive 16-year-old whose untimely death has been woven into the fabric of Kansas culture.

OPINION: Kansans should remember Mary White's spirit of generosity, equality

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on multiple charges, including felony fleeing or attempting to elude, following a vehicle pursuit Friday.

Just after 3:00 a.m. an officer with the Topeka Police Department attempted to stop a white 1990 Cadillac Fleetwood for no tag at SW 37th Street and SW Topeka Boulevard, according to Deputy Shayna Anderson.

The driver later identified as Rico E.D.M. Taylor, 28, Topeka, failed to stop. A short time later, a deputy with the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office observed the vehicle at SW 21st Street and SW Washburn Avenue. A short pursuit was initiated and quickly ended in the 1700 block of SW Quincy Street when the vehicle struck a residential fence. 

After Taylor exited the vehicle he resisted arrest and a deputy was forced to administer oleoresin capsicum, a pepper spray. Deputies recovered a loaded firearm from the scene, according to Anderson.

Deputies transported Taylor to the Shawnee County Department of Corrections after being medically cleared at the scene. He was booked on requested charges of&nbsp; felony flee or attempt to elude, criminal damage to property, transporting an open container and several traffic related charges as well as separate charges through the Topeka Police Department.

A drive-by on Centennial Road is all the proof you need that business is hopping at 1 Vision Aviation.

A major tenant at the Salina Regional Airport and Industrial Center, 1 Vision performs maintenance on regional jets from all over the nation and some from overseas.

A number of aircraft are parked outside of Big Bertha, Salina’s largest hangar, where owner and CEO Jim Sponder opened for business in September 2019. He started with some 45 workers then, and has plans to employ up to 500 workers at the huge Salina hangar.

The goal is still in the works, but like many other companies, 1 Vision’s roster dwindled to nearly 30 in 2020, during the worst of the Coronavirus pandemic.

That lull has since lifted. Demand for 1 Vision’s services has ballooned, and Big Bertha is bulging with both work and workers. Sponder counts 250 employees, and he’s still hiring.

“We have two shifts,” Sponder said. “We are booking work as far out as March of next year.”

Regional airlines are flying again, and there is a huge backlog of work to be done.

“The airlines parked aircraft that needed major maintenance checks during the pandemic.&nbsp; They only performed minimal maintenance and were focused on keeping their budgets as low as possible,” Sponder said. “Now it’s catch-up time for airlines.”

Federal Aviation Administration regulations require many repair inspections and maintenance that are scheduled with the calendar, operational time or the number of takeoffs and landings.

“You’ve got to look at certain areas of the aircraft with each inspection,” he said.

There are many good sides to having a rush of demand, but finding enough licensed airframe and powerplant mechanics who do the bulk of 1 Vision’s maintenance, repair and overhaul work, has been a challenge.

“Our recruiter is working hard and bringing a lot of people in, but I finally made the jump to using contract houses as well,” Sponder said. “Half of my employees are now contract workers and half are direct hires.”

Sponder’s pleased to have the growing business, but there can be problems.

“I don’t want to get the cart in front of the horse, and hire too many people,” he said. “I’m trying to do it as smart as I can. When we get caught up, I don’t want to have to lay people off.”

One of six team owners of the Salina Liberty indoor football team, Sponder has some players working part-time at 1 Vision Aviation.

“I need about 100 more mechanics yesterday,” he said. “I wish I was at my goal of 500 right now.”

Another bright side of the current situation, he said, is that parts suppliers are well-stocked.

“I’m happy the airline conventions are opening back up,” Sponder said. “It helps build business.”

He’ll be attending an MRO event soon in Orlando, Fla., and a Regional Airline Association gathering this fall in Phoenix.&nbsp; &nbsp;

1 Vision growth evident from afar

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas House member was arrested for possible misdemeanor battery in what authorities said Friday was an incident involving a student while he was substitute teaching at a public school in his hometown.

Republican Rep. Mark Samsel was booked Thursday into the local county jail and released on a $1,000 bond. His arrest came after a student reported an incident Wednesday at school in his hometown of Wellsville, a town of about 1,700 people some 55 miles southwest of Kansas City.

Samsel, 36, has yet to be formally charged with a crime but has a first appearance scheduled in district court for May 19 in Franklin County, said County Attorney Brandon Jones. Kansas law says battery is either causing bodily harm to another person or physical contact with someone else “done in a rude, insulting or angry manner,” and is punished by up to six months in jail.

Franklin County Sheriff Jeffrey Richards declined to discuss the details of the incident behind Samsel’s arrest. Samsel did not answer a phone call — a message could not be left for him, and he did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment.

A parent of Wellsville students provided The Associated Press with videos she said were shot by students. One shows a noisy class, with Samsel grabbing a boy, pushing him against a wall and telling him, “I could put the wrath of God on you right now,” before the boy breaks free and runs away, yelling.

The parent, Jessica Roberts, a mother of four, said her son showed her the videos in a social media group chat and she posted on social media about Samsel, asking whether others were concerned about his behavior.

Roberts said in an interview that Samsel was in a position of authority and, “at no point is it appropriate to be off-the-wall with children.”

Kansas City media indicated a reporter had seen videos recorded by students that showed Samsel talking about suicide, sex, masturbation, God and the Bible.

Roberts also shared a Snapchat post from Samsel saying the incident was “all planned,” saying he wanted to “SEND A MESSAGE about art, mental health, teenage suicide, how we treat our educators and one another.”

“To who? Parents,” he posted. “Very simple - EXACTLY what God planned. The kids were in on it.”

Richards said he didn’t know about the Snapchat post and added, “There was nothing staged about our investigation — I can tell you that.”

Samsel also has been a referee for the association that oversees middle and high school sports in Kansas. He was first elected to the House in 2018 and reelected last year.

Wellsville school Superintendent Ryan Bradbury said without naming Samsel that the substitute teacher involved in the Wednesday incident is no longer working for the district.

The top three leaders of the Kansas House’s Republican majority said they were “gathering as much information as we can.”

Samsel is the third Kansas lawmaker to face legal problems this year.

Fellow Republicans ousted&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/arrests-kansas-topeka-wichita-57fe7b37ea34af1a311c59dd71041ec3">Sen. Gene Suellentrop</a>&nbsp;of Wichita as Senate majority leader earlier this month after he was charged with drunken driving and a felony charge of attempting to elude law enforcement for driving the wrong way on a highway in Topeka.

And Democratic state Rep. Aaron Coleman, of Kansas City, was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/race-and-ethnicity-legislature-kansas-city-kansas-topeka-768126190ab7c98965245d7808a2bf58">warned by a House committee</a>&nbsp;in writing about abusive behavior toward girls and young women before his election last year. He reached&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/election-2020-state-courts-legislature-kansas-city-lawsuits-fa6cd16ccb10518f157e4796522d214b">a legal agreement</a>&nbsp;in January with the woman who managed his primary opponent’s campaign to end an anti-stalking court order against him.

Following the autopsy, the victim’s death was ruled a homicide. Due to the state of decomposition, it will take time before the man can be positively identified.

Just before 2 p.m. Friday, authorities arrested 37-year-old Jennifer R. Garnett, of Coffeyville, in connected to the case. Garnett was arrested at 1518 S. Maple in Coffeyville on requested charges of burglary, theft, forgery and criminal use of a credit card. Garnett was booked into the Montgomery County Jail.

When Coffeyville police arrived at the home, they discovered a deceased male inside. Due to the state of decomposition, the man has not yet been positively identified.

Anyone with information related to this death investigation is asked to call the KBI at 1-800-KS-CRIME or the Coffeyville Police Department at 620-252-6160.

An autopsy is scheduled for Friday, April 30. The investigation is ongoing. Nothing further will be released at this time.

Homicide: Woman jailed in connection with KBI investigation

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating a fatal shooting that left a teen dead have arrested a second suspect and are asking the public for help to locate a third.

Police <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=20070532">booked 18-year-old Breckyn I. Elliot</a> of Wichita just before 6:30p.m. Thursday on requested charges of first degree murder stemming from the shooting that fatally injured 17-year-old Erik Stokes of Wichita, according to Officer Paul Cruz.

On Tuesday police arrested 18-year-old Easton Palmer of Wichita in connection with the crime.

Police are now asking for help locating 25-year-old Jaron C. Palmer of Wichita. He is wanted for first-degree murder and attempted aggravated robbery.

Just before 7p.m. Sunday, police were dispatched to report of a shooting at the&nbsp;Morgan's Landing Apartments complex in the 3800 Block of West 13th Street in Wichita, according to Police Captain Jason Stephens.

When officers arrived, they learned there were five individuals inside the apartment at the time of the incident. One who was fatally shot has been identified as 17-year-old Eric Stokes of Wichita.

EMS transported a second shooting victim identified as a 17-year-old boy to a local hospital. He was treated for minor injuries and released, according to Stephens.

Investigators learned that three unknown, armed suspects arrived at the apartment, forced their way in and fired several shots that killed Stokes.&nbsp; The suspects fled on foot from the apartment complex.&nbsp; It was not a random incident and drugs are believed to have played a part, according to Stephens.

On Tuesday, police released a video of two suspects involved in the homicide.&nbsp; After the release, police received numerous tips from the community, which led to the identification and arrest of Palmer on Tuesday evening at a home in the 11200 block of west Dora in Wichita without incident.

“Time and time again, the community helps solve violent crimes in Wichita,” Chief Gordon Ramsay said.&nbsp; “This is a prime example, and we appreciate the community’s help and continued support.”

&nbsp;Detectives are working on locating two other suspects involved in the crime.

Palmer and Elliott are being held on requested charges of first-degree murder and aggravated robbery.

 Deputies arrived on scene and discovered Stephens who was dead.

After a preliminary investigation deputies arrested Jon K. Ewing, 61, of Scranton and booked him into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of voluntary manslaughter.

Upon further investigation, authorities amended the voluntary manslaughter charge to murder in the first degree, according to Christian.

 Ewing is also being held on a requested charge of with aggravated kidnapping, aggravated burglary, criminal threat and interference with law enforcement, according to Christian.

He remains jailed on a&nbsp;$1,000,000.00 bond, according to online jail records.&nbsp; Authorities have not released how Stephens died.

COWLEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on felony allegations after an arrest.

On April 26, officers were dispatched to the 1000 block of North Summit Street in Arkansas City for a report of a disturbance in a vehicle traveling along the roadway, possibly involving a gun of some kind, according to a media release.

Police were unable to locate the vehicle, but were able to identify the reporting party who called 911.

That person, a 56-year-old Arkansas City man, alleged that a relative, later identified as Floyd Dale Young, 72, Joplin, Missouri, had pointed what the victim thought to be a handgun at him and then stated that he should shoot the victim.

Police eventually located Young and questioned him about the incident. He stated that he had pulled a BB gun from his back waistband because he was afraid of the victim, but denied pointing it at him.

Young provided the BB gun to an officer, who collected it as evidence. He was taken into custody without incident and booked into the Cowley County Jail in Winfield on a requested charge of&nbsp;felony aggravated assault.

Kan. officers arrest suspect after dispute involving a handgun

SEDGWICK COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities investigating a fatal accident have&nbsp;identified the victim as 21-year-old Legend Johnson of Wichita.

Shortly after midnight, police responded to a single-vehicle accident in the area of Kellogg and Washington, according to Officer Trevor Macey.

 When they arrived, they located a vehicle that had rolled over, ejecting two occupants. EMS transported Johnson to an area hospital where she later died, according to Macey.

Officers also arrested 25-year-old Tony Porter who attempted to flee the scene. During the investigation, police said, Porter became uncooperative and spat on an officer. Porter was then transported to the Sedgwick County Adult Detention Facility and booked on a requested charge of Simple Battery of a Law Enforcement Officer, according to Macey.

It is believed that alcohol and speed were contributing factors in the accident, according to Macey.

performing services or selling goods, including driving a car for booked
 rides or deliveries, renting out property, selling goods online or 
freelance work. Often, customers and service providers or sellers are 
brought together through a digital platform on an app or website. Visit 
the <a href="https://www.irs.gov/businesses/small-businesses-self-employed/sharing-economy-tax-center">Gig Economy Tax Center on IRS.gov</a> to learn more about withholding and estimated tax requirements for these types of earned income and paid services.Taxpayers should collect and keep records and receipts during the year. <a href="https://www.irs.gov/businesses/small-businesses-self-employed/recordkeeping">Recordkeeping</a> can help track income, deduct expenses and complete tax returns.<h2>Unemployment benefits</h2>A record number of Americans applied for unemployment compensation in
 2020 due to the pandemic. Anyone who received unemployment benefits 
will need to report it on their tax returns.However, the American Rescue Plan, enacted on March 11, 2021, 
excludes from income up to $10,200 ($20,400 if married filing jointly) 
of unemployment compensation received in 2020 for taxpayers with 
modified adjusted gross income under qualifying thresholds. Any amount 
over $10,200 is still taxable for each person. To determine if payments 
received for being unemployed are taxable, see the <a href="https://www.irs.gov/help/ita/are-payments-i-receive-for-being-unemployed-taxable">Interactive Tax Assistant</a> on IRS.gov.For those who have already filed their 2020 tax return and paid taxes
 on the full amount of unemployment compensation before the law was 
passed, they should not file an amended return. The IRS will 
automatically refund money to people who already filed their tax return 
reporting unemployment compensation.The IRS will recompute any credits and deductions claimed on the 
original return. However, if the reduction of income now qualifies a 
taxpayer for a new credit not claimed on the original return, like the 
Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), those taxpayers will need to file an 
amended tax return, Form 1040x, to claim the new credit. Taxpayers can 
see if they <a href="https://www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/individuals/earned-income-tax-credit/use-the-eitc-assistant">qualify for the EITC</a> at IRS.gov.Unemployment benefit recipients should have received a <a href="https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-form-1099-g">Form 1099-G, Certain Government Payments, </a>from
 the agency paying the benefits. The form will show the amount of 
unemployment compensation they received in 2020 in Box 1, and any 
federal income tax withheld in Box 4.Some states do not mail Form 1099-Gs. Taxpayers may need to get the electronic version from their state's website.Taxpayers who received an <a href="https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-offers-guidance-to-taxpayers-on-identity-theft-involving-unemployment-benefits">incorrect Form 1099-G</a>
 for unemployment benefits they did not receive should contact the 
issuing state agency to request a revised Form 1099-G showing they did 
not receive these benefits.Taxpayers who are unable to obtain a timely, corrected form from 
their state should still file an accurate tax return, reporting only the
 income they received. A corrected Form 1099-G showing zero unemployment
 benefits in cases of identity theft will help taxpayers avoid an 
unexpected federal tax bill for unreported income.Additionally, if taxpayers are concerned that their personal 
information has been stolen and they want to protect their identity when
 filing their federal tax return, they can request an <a href="https://www.irs.gov/identity-theft-fraud-scams/get-an-identity-protection-pin">Identity Protection Pin (IP PIN)</a> from the IRS.Generally, by law, unemployment compensation must be included as 
income. Taxable benefits include any of the special unemployment 
compensation authorized under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic 
Security (CARES) Act, enacted in 2020.If a taxpayer didn't report income from gig work or unemployment 
compensation on a return, a corrected return can be filed using <a href="https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-form-1040x">Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return</a>.
