SHAWNEE COUNTY–Law enforcement authorities are investigating an attempted armed robbery and have made an arrest.

Just before 8a.m. Friday, the Shawnee County Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call regarding an attempted armed robbery that just occurred in the 7100block of SW Montara Parkway, according to Deputy Shayna Anderson.

 The armed suspect attempted to steal an occupied vehicle and then fled. Deputies arrived on scene and located the suspect identified as 40-year-old James McKay IV of Topeka nearby and took him into custody.

McKay was booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charge of aggravated robbery and interference with law enforcement.

The Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office’s Patrol Unit, Detectives Unit, K9 Unit and Crime Scene Unit are still actively searching for a firearm that was used in this armed robbery.

Investigators believe the suspect may have discarded the firearm somewhere in the Montara neighborhood between the 7100 block of SW Montara Parkway and the 1700 block of SW Clearview Lane.

Police asked any citizen that may encounter this unsecured firearm to immediately notify law enforcement and not touch the firearm.&nbsp;

Deputies arrest Kan. attempted carjacking suspect

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas woman on multiple charges following a traffic stop in Shawnee Kansas.

Just&nbsp; before 9:30 p.m. Thursday, a deputy conducted a traffic stop on a 2002 Chrysler Town &amp; Country minivan near NW Morse Street and NW Jackson Street for an equipment violation, according Deputy Shayna Anderson. During the investigation, illegal narcotics were located.

Deputies arrested the passenger, Tarji J. Marks, 31, of Topeka and booked her into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on the requested charges of possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia as well as two misdemeanor warrants out of the City of Topeka.

Organic abstractions and poetry come together in the latest exhibit in the Salina Public Library.

Artist Kayla Borell’s exhibit “Soil Take Me Home” is on display in Salina Public Library’s Gallery 708 through July 23. 

The public is welcome to view the exhibit during library hours — 9 a.m.-8:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and noon-6 p.m. Sunday.&nbsp;The library is located at 301 W. Elm Street.

The show includes nine paintings that feature organic abstractions of plants, soil and organic forms and nine hand-stitched, self-written poems on handmade paper.

Borell’s paintings use color, texture and lines to empower a diversity of exploration and experimentation of materials working together on a painted surface. Each piece expresses an understanding of growth, reincarnation, discovery in one’s identity, and a reconciliation to a particular emotion. 

Borell has always been an emotional person, but she didn’t know what to do with it until she turned to art which became a way of life. Now she uses that idea in her creative process to work through understanding different emotions from personal experiences, memories and places in life.

Borell attended Bethany College (2019) earning a B.A. in Studio Art: Painting/Ceramics. As well as majoring in Visual Art Administration and is receiving her M.A. in Arts Management and Leadership at Wichita State University. Currently, Borell is the full-time Director of Education at the Salina Art Center. She is an adjunct art instructor at Bethany College, teaching ceramics and intro-level art classes. She enjoys books, plants, and home improvement projects.

Local artist blends organic forms and poetry

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspect following a burglary in Shawnee County.

Just after 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, the Shawnee County Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call regarding a vehicle burglary and theft that just occurred in the 5800 block of NW 75 Highway, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

Deputies responded and, with information from a citizen, were able to locate the suspect vehicle. The red 2018 Chevrolet Colorado was stopped near NE 24 Highway and NE Goldwater Road.

During the investigation deputies located multiple stolen items from the recent burglary and items associated with other Jefferson County cases. They arrested Lindsey L. Wabaunsee, 34, Topeka and Jessica, D. Garza, 32, of Horton and booked them Shawnee County Department of Corrections.

Wabaunsee is being held on requested charges of burglary, theft, possession of stolen property, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and transporting an open container. Garza is being held on requested charges of burglary, theft, possession of stolen property and felony criminal damage to property.

Kan. deputies find items taken in series of burglaries

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a Kansas man in connection with an armed robbery arrested after a high speed chase.

Just after 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, police officers traveling westbound on Kellogg in Wichita and observed a 2001 silver Honda Accord traveling at 97 miles per hour, according to Officer Charley Davidson.

The officer attempted to stop the vehicle when the driver refused to stop, accelerated, and fled from officers.&nbsp; Officers also learned the vehicle was involved in a weekend robbery and shooting in Wichita, according to Davidson.

A short vehicle pursuit ensued, and was called off in the area of Central and Grove due to excessive speeds by the suspect driver.

At Central and Hillside, the vehicle collided with a gold 2008 Buick Lucerne being driven by a 37-year-old man.&nbsp; He sustained minor injuries, according to Davidson.&nbsp;&nbsp;

One suspect identified as 20-year-old Jacob Caddell and two others fled from the Honda on foot.&nbsp; Police officers searched the area for the suspects with the assistance of a K9 who found Caddell&nbsp; hiding in a garage nearby. Police took him into custody with the assistance of the K9.&nbsp; 

EMS transported Caddell to an area hospital for treatment of minor injures from a dog bite and then booked him into jail.&nbsp; Police did not locate the two other two suspects.

While searching, officers also located a handgun, rifle, and a backpack with stolen items.&nbsp;&nbsp;

During the crash investigation, detectives learned of Caddell’s involvement in a Tuesday evening armed robbery at a KWIK shop in the 2700 Block of South Oliver in Wichita, according to Davidson.

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a Kansas man arrested after a high speed chase.

Marjorie Mae Walthers was born on July 23, 1932, on the Chizek home place near Cuba, the daughter of Ernest and Amelia (Plucar) Chizek. Marjorie grew up on the family farm, and attended Cuba schools, graduating from Cuba High School in 1950. Following high school, Marjorie attended Bethany College in Lindsborg, obtaining her provisional teacher’s certificate.

Marjorie was united in marriage to Loren “Dean” Walthers on August 26th, 1951, at the Cuba Presbyterian Church. Following her wedding, Marjorie taught in the Cuba grade school for a few years, and then in 1953, daughter Debra was born, and Marjorie chose to stay home and be a Mom and help Dean build the family business, and then in 1955, son David was born.

Marjorie was Dean’s right hand at Walther’s Oil, where she worked by Dean’s side and together they built a strong family business, enjoying working together each day. Marjorie and Dean made their family, their company, and Cuba their life. They lived in the same home their entire married lives, which kept changing to meet the needs of their growing family, and to entertain family and friends. 

Marjorie was also very involved in numerous community groups and organizations including Eastern Star, Guild, and SOMA (Senior Oil Marketers Association). She was a lifetime member of the Cuba Presbyterian Church. She loved being around family and friends and would always go the extra mile to make everyone feel special. One of her favorite holidays was Easter. She enjoyed being able to provide whatever was necessary to see those around her happy. She didn’t know a stranger or a stray cat that happened to show up at her door. (They knew this would be a good home). She always had room in her heart for them.

Marjorie passed away peacefully at her home on May 31, 2021, at the age of 88 years, 10 months, and 8 days. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Dean in 2013, sister Violet Garwood, and brother-in-laws Harry “Jim” Garwood and Charles Lang.

Left to cherish her memories are her daughter Debra Ann Beems and her husband Dave of Concordia, son David Dean Walthers and his wife Gloria of Cuba, sister Shirley Lang of Salina, step-grandchildren Jeremy Beems and his children Landon and Laikyn of Ottawa, and Jill Billinger and her husband Joe and their children Zack, Dylan and Garret of Hays, other family, and many friends.

Memorial services will be held at the Presbyterian Church in Cuba on Friday, June 11, 2021, at 11:00 a.m., with Pastor Phil Goombi officiating, and eulogies provided by Randy Paugh and Judy Keller. Committal services will follow at National Bohemian Cemetery #13, rural Cuba. A luncheon will be served at the community hall.

Friends may sign Marjorie’s book on Thursday, June 10, from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., at Tibbetts-Fischer Funeral Home in Belleville.

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating the fatal weekend shooting of 32-year-old Shakeita Young, 32, in Topeka on Saturday have arrested 31-year-old Kajun D. Brock, according to Topeka Police Lt. Shane Hilton.

On Wednesday, police asked the public for help to locate Brock. The United States Marshal Service Fugitive Task Force located him&nbsp; in Topeka on Wednesday evening.&nbsp;

Police booked Brock into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on the following charges and requested charges of Murder in the First Degree and Criminal Possession of a Firearm by a Felon

U.S. Marshals capture suspect in Kansas woman's murder

Grace (Greep) Ayre, 100, of Abilene, was born December 13, 1920, the daughter of Fred David and Jennie Grace (McCune) Greep at Longford, Kansas and departed this life May 31, 2021. She attended Walker Grade School and the Longford Rural High School and taught one year at the Bouldin School in Clay County. Later she worked at the Duckwall store, First Western Bank and the Farmers National Banks, now-UMB of Abilene. She retired in 1985.

On February 28, 1940 she was united in marriage to Wayne R. Ayre at Longford, Kansas. Most of her married life was spent in Abilene, Kansas. She was a long time member of the Emmanuel United Methodist Church of Abilene, formerly called the Evangelical Church. She loved working in her church. She enjoyed visiting friends at rest homes, reading, walking and growing roses, also doing volunteer work at her church, the Good News Book Store and the Abilene visitor’s information center. She was also a member of Church Women United of Abilene.

She is survived by her daughter Deon (Mike) Parsons of Abilene and son Duane (Linda) Ayre of Wichita, Kansas; 11 grandchildren and numerous great and great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Wayne. Also preceding her in death was her daughter Janet Yingling, her parents, three brothers, Myron (Jack) Greep, Kenneth Greep and Fred (Fritz) Greep and one sister, Hazel Coup.

Funeral services for Grace will 10:30 a.m., Friday, June 4, 2021 at the Emmanuel Church of Abilene with Pastor Gordon McClure officiating. Burial will follow at Keystone Cemetery near Manchester. Family will receive friends Friday from 10:00 a.m., until service time at the church. 

The family suggests memorials be given to the Emmanuel Church or to the donor’s choice. Memorials may be dropped off or mailed to Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home, 414 NW Third St., Abilene, Kansas 67410.&nbsp;&nbsp;

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a fatal crash and have made an arrest.

Just before 4:30 p.m. Monday, officers responded to an injury accident with a driver pinned in a vehicle at Maple and Martinson, according to Officer Charley Davidson. 

Upon arrival, officer’s located 80-year-old Frankie Baxter pinned inside of a vehicle. Police with the assistance of the Wichita Fire Department removed her from the vehicle and she pronounced deceased on the scene, according to Davidson.

The investigation revealed that Baxter was driving a blue 2015 Hyundai Tucson northbound on Elizabeth Street. She turned to travel eastbound on Maple. 

A 2008 Maxda Six driven by 33-year-old Scott Cabrales of Wichita was eastbound on Maple at a high rate of speed and believed to be under the influence of alcohol.&nbsp; The Mazda struck the rear driver's side of the Hyundai. The impact caused the Hyundai to strike the curb and a tree.

EMS transported Cabrales to an area hospital for medical treatment of minor injuries and then booked him into jail on requested charges of of aggravated battery, driving under the influence, and no proof of insurance.

Police will present the case to the Sedgwick County District Attorney.

Man accused in DUI crash that killed Kansas woman

I’ve heard every excuse in the book for people not leaving jobs they hate. No matter the excuse, it always comes down to fear and doubt—fear of failing, fear that time has passed them by, fear of what&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/career-advice/changing-careers-midlife" target="_blank">others will say</a>, and doubting they have what it takes to succeed in something different.

But it’s time to address one fear that comes up again and again because of my connection with Dave Ramsey:&nbsp;I’m afraid to switch careers while I’m working on Baby Step 2. If it doesn’t work out, I’ll only be deeper in debt.

For those of you who may not be familiar with Dave Ramsey’s plan, Baby Step 2 is when you get out debt by using the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/debt/how-the-debt-snowball-method-works" target="_blank">debt snowball</a>. You live on rice and beans, get a second job, and do whatever else you can to dump all your debt, except for your mortgage.

I get it. You don’t want to rock the boat by changing careers during something like this. It feels risky, and that’s the last thing you need when you’re on Baby Step 2. But what if I told you switching careers while you’re in debt doesn’t have to be risky at all?

The truth is, you don’t have to rock the boat by switching careers. You would only rock the boat if you jumped while the boat was still miles away from the dock. Instead, you need to move the boat (your dream job) as close to the dock as possible. When you take careful steps, not only does switching careers while in debt become possible, but it also starts to work out in your favor.

How, you ask? Create a strategic plan, and take baby steps. Yep, we take baby steps here, too. Follow these three steps, and you’ll be moving at the right pace&nbsp;and&nbsp;in the right direction:

First, I want you to make sure what you&nbsp;think&nbsp;you’d rather be doing really is your sweet spot. Remember, your sweet spot is the point where your greatest talent, greatest passion and mission intersect. That means, not only are you really good at it, but you love doing it, and the result of the work matters to you.

Start by making a list of your natural gifts, passions and values. How does that list line up with what you’re currently doing and what you&nbsp;could&nbsp;be doing in a different job? Don’t be afraid to bring in a few people who know you well and will speak truth to you. Ask them if they believe what you’re thinking about doing lines up with any talents and passions they’ve noticed in you.

Research is a big part of moving the boat up to the dock before you step onto it. In this phase, I want you to ask questions like:

●What positions can I find in my city that meet my sweet spot criteria?

 ●What qualifications or certifications do I need to make the career move?

●If the new job requires certifications I don’t have, how much is it going to cost me to get those?

●How long will it take to do everything I need to do in order to get that dream position?

You probably noticed some of those questions involve dollar signs. Even if you need to spend some money for certifications or courses, it’s possible to do it without slowing down your debt snowball momentum. Adjust your budget and make sacrifices where you can. Pick up a side gig, or even have a big, old-fashioned yard sale.

Step 3: Practice the Proximity Principle

You’ve clarified and verified your sweet spot, and done all the research necessary to decide how you’ll make the move. Now it’s time to practice the tried and true Proximity Principle.

The Proximity Principle says this: In order to do what you want to do, you need to be around people who are doing it and in places where it’s happening. In this stage, I want you to spend time making connections and building relationships. Start looking for ways to volunteer in the industry you want to be in, shadow someone who’s doing what you want to do, check out local meetings, and be prepared to pick lots of people’s brains over coffee.

Let me be clear for a moment: Because you’re not taking any leaps, you’re still going to be working your old job while you’re practicing the Proximity Principle and finding money to fund your transition. That’s okay. You may hate your job today, but tomorrow, you’re going to turn hate into great.

When you’re on this plan, you’ll come to a point where you no longer think about your current job as something you hate, because now&nbsp;it’s a tool that’s funding your future. So, be grateful for your current position. After all, it’s a big part of the reason you can take baby steps and switch careers the right way!

COLEMAN: Create a strategic plan for a new career

With a bit of talent, even shipping labels can be made into works of art.

The First Friday showcase at The Flower Nook is proof of that. 

The First Friday event is scheduled for 5-7 p.m. Friday at The Flower Nook, 208 E. Iron Avenue.

What has now become the showcase for June came about when Peggy DeBey of The Flower Nook challenged inmates at Ellsworth Correctional Facility to create visual artwork on four-inch by 8-inch manila shipping tags using any type of medium.

"The result of the tag art challenge features a variety of themes with exceptional art work," DeBey noted.

The Flower Nook supplied the material and Ellsworth Correctional Facility offered art classes for those first-time artists, as well as to those who just wanted to brush up on their skills, DeBey explained.

"I originally pitched the idea of using tea bags, but was told I could not bring tea bags into the cells as they could be/would be used for drugs," DeBey told Salina Post. "I did some extensive searching and we finally agree the tag was similar in size."

DeBey said she presented the project to Ellsworth Correctional Facility as she knew part of the mission of the facility was to provide encouragement, support, and opportunities for the inmates. DeBey said she believes "creating, whether the process takes place inside a jail cell or in a fully outfitted studio setting, produces a dialogue first for personal reflection and then builds community connections."

While the inmates will not be able to attend the First Friday event, nor will their names be revealed, a journal notebook will be available for those attending the event to share their thoughts and encouraging messages about the art, DeBey said. Additionally, The Flower Nook plans to create a YouTube video to share with Ellsworth Correctional Facility

The showcase tag art, however, is not the only thing to see during The Flower Nook's First Friday event. Also available will be the following, according to information on The Flower Nook's <a href="https://www.facebook.com/TheFlowerNookSalina">Facebook page</a>.

●A book signing for artist Mary Ann Tanking's second edition of Flora, Fauna, Fish &amp; Fowl.
