Downtown Salina will be a flurry of arts activity during SculptureTour Salina's family friendly UNwrap Party Saturday.

The 19 sculptures, created by artists from around the country, will be simultaneously unwrapped at 11 a.m. 

In addition to the unveiling, the 2021 merit awards, including Best of Show, will be announced at 1 p.m. Saturday in the plaza just north of As Astra Books and Coffeehouse.

"The SculptureTour exhibits just keep getting bigger and better every year," said Penny Bettles, SculptureTour Salina committee member. "The SculptureTour Salina 2021 exhibit will consist of 19 sculptures from 13 different artists traveling in from seven different states. Three of those artists are Kansans with one local Salinan."

Bettles said that SculptureTour 2021 will include the installation of the tour's largest sculpture.

"This piece, weighing in at nine tons, is being trucked in all the way from Eliot, Maine. The SculptureTour Salina committee has previously poured a deep concrete pad in front of The Temple and are excited to utilize this space with such a unique sculpture," she said.

Tour visitors are encouraged to pick up a walking tour/ballot at a number of downtown merchants or at the Visit Salina info trailer in the parking lot north of Ad Astra Books and Coffeehouse, 141 N. Santa Fe Avenue. Each year, the People's Choice Award is determined by viewers who complete a ballot through Dec. 31, 2021. The winning sculpture is purchased by the City of Salina and permanently placed where it can be enjoyed by the public.

Completed ballots turned in at the Visit Salina trailer during the UNwrap Party are eligible for prize drawings in several categories for children, teens, and adults.

James Lee “Jas” Hayes, 86, of Santa Maria, California, passed away Sunday, March 7, 2021, at the home of Mina Yavari, his loving partner for the past 20 years. Two weeks earlier, “Jas” and Mina spent five happy days in Las Vegas doing what he and she loved best, playing poker together.

James Lee Hayes was born on June 19, 1934, the son of Horace and Marietta “Etta” Hayes in Whitewater, Kansas, a small country town of 495 people. Jas loved the outdoors and fishing for bass. He graduated from Whitewater High Class of 1952. After high school, he worked for Beech Aircraft in Wichita and married Edith Hall raising four children, James “Jimmy”, Mark, Renelle and Jennifer. Working by day and studying at night, Jas graduated from Wichita State University with a degree in accounting, and later received his CPA license.

After moving to southern California in 1975, he settled down in Santa Maria and founded his own CPA accounting firm which he ran successfully for over 35 years before retiring in 2019. A pilot of small planes, he loved flying all over California to explore new places visiting friends and family along the way. His favorite song and motto: “I Did It My Way.” And he did.

Jas is survived by his four children, James “Jimmy”, Mark, Renelle, and Jennifer; four adopted children, Savannah, Christine, Cheyenne, and Cory; seven grandchildren, Alisa, Justin, Benjamin, Dillon, Logan, Diego and Hannah; four great-grandchildren, Landon, Adelyn, Vivian and Victoria; brother Larry Hayes of Campbell, California and a sister, Pat Hayes of Kechi, Kansas.

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating the fatal April 23 shooting of 42-year-old Nathan Brock and 41-year-old Trisha Benjamin of in their mobile home in Wichita have made an arrest.

On Tuesday, Sedgwick County Sheriff’s detectives arrested and booked 30-year-old Steven L. Fessenden of Wichita for the murder, according to Lt. Benjamin Blick.

Just before 5:30a.m. Saturday, sheriff's deputies were sent to a check shots call at the Englewood mobile home park located at 3201 E MacArthur in Wichita, according to Sheriff's Lt. Benjamin Blick.

While responding, deputies received information that a man and woman were inside the residence with apparent gunshot wounds.

When deputies arrived, they had to force entry to the home. Inside the home, they located Brock and Benjamin deceased, according to Blick.

Fessenden is being <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=20042364">held on requested charges</a> of first-degree murder and interference with law enforcement, according online jail records.

The case will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office for charging.

Phillipsburg resident Sandra Aust passed away April 27, 2021, at the Hays Medical Center in Hays at the age of 82.&nbsp; She was born April 29, 1938, in Emporia, the daughter of B.J. &amp; Eva Lucille (DeYoung) Leazure. &nbsp;

Survivors include her sons, Scott of Norton &amp; Jary of Linn &amp; her sister, Dee Ann Meall of Minneapolis, KS.

Cremation was chosen.&nbsp; A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 1, at 11:00 a.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel with Pastor Blake Stanwood officiating.&nbsp; The service will be streamed live on the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel Facebook page.

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating the suspicious weekend death 46-year-old&nbsp; Hester Workman of Topeka in her home have made an arrest.

As a result of the investigation, Workman's death is now classified as a homicide and a 16-year-old Topeka juvenile has been arrested and booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections requested charges of First degree murder, Felony murder, Aggravated burglary, Theft and Obstruction, according to Lt. Kelvin Johnson.

Just after&nbsp; 7p.m. Saturday, police responded to a home in the 2800 block of SW James in Topeka after a 911 call requesting medical personnel, according to police Lt. Kelvin Johnson.

At the scene first responders located Workman who was deceased. Police released no additional details early Tuesday including the gender of the teen in custody.

Homicide: 16-year-old arrested for death of Kansas woman 

SEDGWICK COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a shooting that sent a man to the hospital.

Just after 2:30a.m. Sunday, police responded to report of a shooting at a nightclub in the 400 Block of South Hydraulic in Wichita, according to Officer Charley Davidson.

At the scene, police found a 22-year-old man with a gunshot wound. EMS transported him to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators learned that a disturbance occurred at the business between 38-year-old Tiefa Miller and 31-year-old Makala Day, according to Davidson. The disturbance continued out into the parking lot and grew involving multiple individuals and multiple shots were fired injuring the 22-year-old.

Officers located a handgun and shell casings in the parking lot of the business.&nbsp;

During the investigation, police stopped Miller and 47-year-old Jerry Minor leaving the business in a vehicle. Police found drugs in their vehicle and arrested Minor on requested charges of distributing hallucinogenics and possession of drug paraphernalia. They arrested Miller for possession of marijuana. Officers arrested Day at the scene and booked her on outstanding warrants, according to Davidson.

Police have not indicated if the three are suspects in the shooting.

On April 27, 1978, 51 construction workers plunged to their deaths when a scaffold inside a cooling tower at the Pleasants Power Station site in West Virginia fell 168 feet to the ground. 

In 1521, Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan was killed by natives in the Philippines. 

In 1791, the inventor of the telegraph, Samuel Morse, was born in Charlestown, Massachusetts.

IRS.gov showcases many <a href="https://www.irs.gov/help/tools">task-based tools</a> and features to help people navigate their taxes. All are available 24/7/365.

Timely processing of tax returns and refund issuance is especially important during the pandemic. To speed <a href="https://www.irs.gov/refunds">refunds</a> and <a href="https://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc303">avoid delays</a> in processing, the IRS strongly advises taxpayers to <a href="https://www.irs.gov/filing/e-file-options">file electronically</a> with <a href="https://www.irs.gov/refunds/get-your-refund-faster-tell-irs-to-direct-deposit-your-refund-to-one-two-or-three-accounts">direct deposit</a> as soon as they have the information they need.

Free options for the military and some veterans

 Military OneSource's tax service, provides online software for eligible
 individuals to electronically file a federal return and up to three 
state returns for free.

Military OneSource is a program funded by the Department of Defense 
that provides a range of free resources for military members, veterans

Although the tax filing deadline has been <a href="https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-extends-additional-tax-deadlines-for-individuals-to-may-17">extended to May 17, 2021</a>,
 from April 15, the IRS continues to process electronic tax returns, 
issue direct deposit refunds and accept electronic payments. As of April
 16, the IRS received over 110 million tax returns and issued over $210 
billion in refunds.

Overall, the IRS anticipates nine out of 10 taxpayers will receive 
their refund within 21 days of when they file electronically with direct
 deposit if there are no issues with their tax return.

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a motorcycle theft and have two suspects in custody.

Just before 5:30 a.m. Friday, the Shawnee County Emergency Communications Center received a call that a red 1996 Honda motorcycle was just stolen from a residence in the 4200 block of SE 2nd Street in Topeka, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

 Deputies arrived in the area and located the suspect's white 2005 Ford Expedition pulling a trailer, at SE 2nd Street and SE Croco Road. 

Deputies located the stolen motorcycle on SE 2nd Street near the Oakland Expressway and returned it to the owner.

They also arrested 33-year-old Joshua A. Krahn and 33-year-old Ryan W. Brooks both of Topeka and transported them to the Law Enforcement Center for further questioning.

Krahn and Brooks were booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections for the theft of the motorcycle, according to Christian. Brooks was also charged with driving with a suspended license.

Russell, 39, of Topeka on a City of Topeka warrant and booked him into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of unlawful possession of controlled substances, unlawful distribution of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and speeding.

On April 20, police&nbsp;conducted a traffic stop in the 3800 Block of S. Topeka boulevard, which led to a narcotics search warrant service in the 2400 Block of SE Ohio in Topeka, according to Lt. Jerry Monasmith.

During the investigation, officers located heroin, methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. Topeka boulevard, which led to a narcotics search warrant service in the 2400 Block of SE Ohio in Topeka, according to Lt. Jerry Monasmith.During the investigation, officers located heroin, methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.
