UPDATE: Sports on KINA this week

On the first day of the regular season, the Southeast of Saline and Hesston boys’ basketball teams squared off in Gypsum, with the winner poised to inherit the #1 ranking in Class 3A.

The Trojans would come away with a 56-46 victory on that early December evening, and the Swathers wouldn’t forget it as they ripped off 23 straight wins en route to an appearance in the state semifinals.

The Trojans never fall behind, winning 22 of their next 23, and holding course in the top three of the KBCA rankings, faltering only to a Hugoton team still playing as the 1-seed in the 4A bracket.

These two teams now find themselves on a collision course at the Sports Arena in Hutchinson, and only one will claim a spot in the 3A state championship game on Saturday.

The Trojans advanced through last night’s quarterfinal round with a 64-47 win over Perry-Lecompton, closing out the game on a 57-30 run over the final three quarters after falling behind 17-7.

“I was really proud of how we stayed even-keeled and weathered the storm,” SES head coach Bryson Flax said. “I think that’s a testament to just how mature our group is. I could have burned a few timeouts but I chose to let them figure it out and they did just that.”

In the finale of Wednesday’s action in Hutch, Hesston polished off Colby 59-46 to punch their ticket to the second round, looking every bit as dominant as they have all season.

“Hesston hasn’t changed a bunch,” Flax said. “They’re still going to get out and guard you hard, they still rebound really well on both ends, and as the year has gone on they’ve figured out who their guys are after losing some kids from last year’s team.”

Both of these squads will come into this contest with a wealth of state experience, as the Swathers are still the defending 3A champs, and the Trojans are fresh off a third-place finish in Hutch last year.

“Our guys have really handled the things around the state tournament well and I’m glad that our guys have that experience but Hesston has a lot of guys that have played in a lot of big games too,” he said. “You can throw records and history out of it, tonight it’s just going to be two really good basketball teams going at it.”

Much of the Swather’s success has been predicated on the play of Jake Proctor and Adrian Hernandez, who have created nightmare matchups for opponents all throughout this 23-game win streak. “Everything runs through Proctor,” Flax said. “He’s one of the premier point guards in the state and he can slice you and dice you from a lot of different angles, [Hernandez] has come on as of late and has been a lot more aggressive on the inside and the outside. They’re tough to match up with and we have to be good off the dribble.”

After collecting a program-best 23rd win on Wednesday, the Trojans have an opportunity to make history again just 24 hours later as no team in Southeast of Saline boy’s basketball history has ever played for a state title.

While SES is aware of this looming milestone, the team remains laser-focused on Hesston, and conversations about these kinds of things haven’t entered the Trojan locker room.

“Truthfully we haven’t talked about it,” he said. “We want to take things game by game. I’m sure the guys are aware of it but we want to take things day by day and we’ve got a fight on our hands tonight. Tip-off between the Trojans and Swathers is set for 8:00 at the Sports Arena in Hutchinson, following the 6:00 game that will see the 1-seed in Galena (24-0) go toe to toe with the 4-seed in Marysville (22-2).

Thursday prep basketball state tournament scores

After surviving a shaky start, the Southeast of Saline boys’ basketball team made a statement in the opening round of this year’s 3A state tournament, eliminating Perry-Lecompton 64-47 to advance to the semifinals on Friday.

While the Kaws’ campaign comes to a close at 19-5, the Trojans go marching on, and with their 23rd victory of the season (23-1), set a new benchmark for single-season wins in program history.

“These achievements are all them, I haven’t done anything,” SES head coach Bryson Flax said. “All we try to do is put them in positions to be successful and they do the rest. 23 wins is a lot of danged wins for a season that’s capped at 21. These guys are talented, they’re locked in and they’re hungry, that’s been the difference between us and a lot of teams this year.”

Things started disastrously for Southeast, who found themselves down 8-0 early and took a 17-7 deficit into the second quarter.

From there, however, the Trojans roared to life and never looked back, outscoring the Kaws 23-4 in the second, and 57-30 in the final three quarters to cruise through the quarterfinal round 64-47.

“We knew that this was a team that hadn’t been here in a while that was going to play hard,” Flax said. “All day these have been games of runs and we just wanted to hang in there and wait for our run to come. It took us too long to settle in but I’m proud of our guys, they played really hard.”

Nobody felt the strain of that slow first quarter quite as badly as Eli Sawyers, who was held without a bucket for the first eight minutes.

After returning to the game in the second, Sawyers immediately made his presence felt, scoring twelve of the Trojan's 23 points in the second quarter and leaving the contest with a game-high 22 points, and a perfect 6-6 at the stripe.

“Historically we haven’t been that great from the free-throw line but it was nice to hit a couple,” Flax said. “Eli is a competitor, he knows he has to be good in big games and I thought he was.”

Sawyers was joined in double figures by Nakari Morrical-Palmer and Luke Gebhardt who finished with 14 and 13 respectively on a night that saw seven different Trojans in the scoring column.

In addition to those 14 points, Morrical-Palmer filled up the stat sheet with 13 rebounds, 3 steals, 3 assists, and a number of huge stops on defense. “Nakari is a special player and they were physical with him but he did a phenomenal job of rebounding the basketball, he said. “I love having a kid like that on my team.”

Both Morrical-Palmer and Sawyers ended their game with a double-double, as Sawyers snagged 11 boards before all was said and done.

Next up, the Trojans will turn their attention to the 3A semifinals where they will square off with either Hesston or Colby for a trip to the state championship game.

“You can’t win what you want to win unless you win three in a row this year but our guys are really locked in. We’ll take care of ourselves and it’s a late game but our guys will be ready.”

Trojans take down Kaws, advance to state semis with program-record 23rd win

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan offered a reminder today to not discard personal information in the trash after garbage bags from Salina were found discarded in the county.

Soldan said this morning that the sheriff's office patrol division responded to a reported littering case just outside of the Salina city limits on Wednesday. Seven bags of trash that were taken from various southeast Salina residences were found. Sheriff's office personnel were able to track the bags back to the residences because of identifying information inside.

The residents told sheriff's office personnel that they had placed the garbage bags in their city trash carts.

Soldan said he suspects the trash bags were removed from the carts in an attempt to gather personal information.

Soldan: Don't discard personal info in trash; bags found in county

After cruising through their sub-state bracket, the Southeast of Saline boys' basketball team will make a triumphant return to the Hutchinson Sports Arena to open the 3A state tournament on Thursday.

The Trojans come in as this year’s two-seed at 22-1, and enter the bracket as the highest-ranked team remaining while their first opponent in Perry-Lecompton comes in as the 7-seed at 19-4.

Despite being placed in the only 3A sub-state bracket devoid of any teams with losing records, Southeast wasted no time punching their ticket to state last week, knocking off Phillipsburg 77-48, Russell 65-38, and Beloit 56-42 all in short order.

At the same time out in Perry, the Kaws were winning big games of their own, eliminating Jefferson West 67-36, Silver Lake 38-28, and Heritage Christian 73-66 in an overtime thriller.

Of the eight teams remaining in Class 3A, Southeast of Saline joins Galena and Hesston as the only three to return to Hutch this year, and as the top three seeds, all of them will be hungry to make their mark on this year’s tournament.

“I think our guys have embraced the idea of unfinished business,” SES head coach Bryson Flax said. “We don’t talk about that a whole lot and this team has a whole different feel about them this year. Nothing that’s coming at us is going to be a surprise from the pep rallies to the sendoff to the ins and outs of state. We know what to expect and hopefully, we’ll be able to get into a rhythm quicker.”

To get into that early rhythm, the Trojans will need the same level of defensive excellence that they showcased last week, holding those three opponents to just 43 points a night while averaging 66 themselves.

“We defended really well throughout sub-state,” Flax said. “On the first two nights, I thought we put a better product on the floor but we did some really good things against Beloit in a game where they gave us everything we could have wanted and more.”

Like every other team still playing basketball this deep into the postseason, Perry-Lecompton is a tough customer who will provide several challenges for SES, but the Trojans have faced more than their fair share of quality opponents this year, and will be more than up to the challenge on Thursday evening.

“Perry-Lecompton is long and athletic,” he said. “They have multiple guys that can score but they’re really led by a two-headed monster averaging 18 and 15 a game. They switch up their defense a lot and present a lot of challenges with their athleticism.”

That two-headed monster consists of Gunnar Ball and Kamryn Kaniper, who have been terrorizing opposing defenses all season long surrounded by a roster of talented role players.

“Ball is a solid player who wants to break you down off the dribble,” Flax said. “He’s a very capable kid who can step out and shoot the three as well. The Kaniper kid is a high-energy player who loves to get out in transition. They also have a little size inside that we’re going to have to keep off the glass and a couple of guys that can step out and shoot the three.”

With a win on Thursday, the Trojans would return to the state semifinals for a second straight season and give themselves an opportunity to become the first team in SES history to play for a 3A state title.

The winner of this game will advance to face either the defending state champs in Hesston (22-1) or the six-seed in Colby (20-3) at 8:00 on Friday.

Tip-off between the Trojans and Kaws is set for 6:00 in Hutch and the game can be heard on KINA (910 AM or 107.5 FM) courtesy of Bennington State Bank and Eagle Radio.

 </figure>After cruising through their sub-state bracket, the Southeast of Saline boys' basketball team will make a triumphant return to the Hutchinson Sports Arena to open the 3A state tournament on Thursday.The Trojans come in as this year’s two-seed at 22-1, and enter the bracket as the highest-ranked team remaining while their first opponent in Perry-Lecompton comes in as the 7-seed at 19-4.Despite being placed in the only 3A sub-state bracket devoid of any teams with losing records, Southeast wasted no time punching their ticket to state last week, knocking off Phillipsburg 77-48, Russell 65-38, and Beloit 56-42 all in short order.At the same time out in Perry, the Kaws were winning big games of their own, eliminating Jefferson West 67-36, Silver Lake 38-28, and Heritage Christian 73-66 in an overtime thriller.Of the eight teams remaining in Class 3A, Southeast of Saline joins Galena and Hesston as the only three to return to Hutch this year, and as the top three seeds, all of them will be hungry to make their mark on this year’s tournament.“I think our guys have embraced the idea of unfinished business,” SES head coach Bryson Flax said. “We don’t talk about that a whole lot and this team has a whole different feel about them this year. Nothing that’s coming at us is going to be a surprise from the pep rallies to the sendoff to the ins and outs of state. We know what to expect and hopefully, we’ll be able to get into a rhythm quicker.”To get into that early rhythm, the Trojans will need the same level of defensive excellence that they showcased last week, holding those three opponents to just 43 points a night while averaging 66 themselves.“We defended really well throughout sub-state,” Flax said. “On the first two nights, I thought we put a better product on the floor but we did some really good things against Beloit in a game where they gave us everything we could have wanted and more.”Like every other team still playing basketball this deep into the postseason, Perry-Lecompton is a tough customer who will provide several challenges for SES, but the Trojans have faced more than their fair share of quality opponents this year, and will be more than up to the challenge on Thursday evening.“Perry-Lecompton is long and athletic,” he said. “They have multiple guys that can score but they’re really led by a two-headed monster averaging 18 and 15 a game. They switch up their defense a lot and present a lot of challenges with their athleticism.”That two-headed monster consists of Gunnar Ball and Kamryn Kaniper, who have been terrorizing opposing defenses all season long surrounded by a roster of talented role players.“Ball is a solid player who wants to break you down off the dribble,” Flax said. “He’s a very capable kid who can step out and shoot the three as well. The Kaniper kid is a high-energy player who loves to get out in transition. They also have a little size inside that we’re going to have to keep off the glass and a couple of guys that can step out and shoot the three.”With a win on Thursday, the Trojans would return to the state semifinals for a second straight season and give themselves an opportunity to become the first team in SES history to play for a 3A state title.The winner of this game will advance to face either the defending state champs in Hesston (22-1) or the six-seed in Colby (20-3) at 8:00 on Friday.Tip-off between the Trojans and Kaws is set for 6:00 in Hutch and the game can be heard on KINA (910 AM or 107.5 FM) courtesy of Bennington State Bank and Eagle Radio.For continuing coverage of Trojan hoops throughout the state tournament, stay tuned to the Salina Post.

Trojans clash with Kaws in 3A state quarterfinals 

For a second straight season, the Southeast of Saline boys will be one of eight teams battling it out at the Hutchinson Sports Arena for a 3A state basketball championship.

While just getting to this tournament is a rare enough feat in and of itself, the Trojans will be one of just three teams making a repeat appearance at state, alongside the reigning champs in Hesston and this year’s one-seed in Galena.

This also comes on the heels of an appearance in the state semifinals for football this fall, as well as another state cross country championship for the girls, and runner-up finish for the boys.

“Everybody is extremely excited,” SES head coach Bryson Flax said. “It’s not often that you get here once and it’s even less frequent to see a team go back. This is great for our kids, it’s great for our school and it’s great for our community. Everything at Southeast in general is in a really good place right now.”

The Trojans will enter this year’s 3A tournament as the 2-seed at 22-1, their lone loss coming at the hands of another state bound program in Hugoton, who will make their run at a 4A title this week.

While it wasn’t always discussed in the Southeast locker room, this week's action at the Sports Arena is what the Trojans have been working for since the season tipped off back in December.

“Our goal was definitely to get back to Hutch,” Flax said. “When we left here last year we had some mixed emotions. We were happy with how we produced all year and took third but there was still a bit of a sour taste from being a quarter away from playing in the championship. Everybody has been locked in from day one and even if we haven’t talked about it we’ve been working toward this.”

This year’s team has become synonymous with their “showtime” play, with an emphasis on transition offense, great ball movement, and flashy play above the rim.

While all of these things have certainly played into the Trojan’s brand of basketball, their commitment on the other end of the floor has allowed them to take another step forward this year, holding opponents to just 41 points per game while averaging 64 themselves.

“The way we’ve been locked in defensively is the best thing I’ve seen from these guys all year,” he said. “Last season we’d go through stretches where we weren’t very good on that end. Our guys have really bought in even more and defensively we’ve been really solid all year.”

While Southeast features one of the deepest benches at this year’s tournament, there’s no doubt that the two headed monster of Eli Sawyers and Nakari Morrical-Palmer has been a big part of what’s gotten SES to this point, with the dynamic duo averaging just shy of 30 points, 14 rebounds and 7 assists on any given night.

“Eli’s skill set and ability to make others around him better is huge and I think he’s an underrated defender,” Flax said. “Then you’ve got Nakari, who has great vision, finds people at the right time and is so athletic that he gives himself chances to get in passing lanes and steal rebounds.”

Beyond those two, SES is stacked with a roster that features such prominent pieces as Luke Gebhardt, Drake Augustine, Danny Kejr, and Kayson Lilley, and that depth will be primed to pounce when the tournament begins on Thursday evening.

“We’re going to have the same rotations and expectations that we’ve had all year,” Flax said. “For all of our guys, we defend first, we rebound at a high level and offensively we live and die by how well we pass the ball. We still need many contributions from everyone to make a run and they know what I expect out of them.”

While last year’s Trojans told the story of a team overjoyed to be one of the final eight with a lot of upside, this year’s Trojans will walk into Hutchinson with a ton of experience under their belts, and unfinished business left to complete.

“With all of these tournaments you have to win the first one,” Flax said. “We want to guarantee ourselves two more games but I’d be lying if I said our guys weren’t locked in on winning a championship. Ever since last year’s semifinals that’s been the goal and they’ve done a really great job of preparing, now it’s time to go out there and compete.”

Southeast of Saline will kick off their run at 6:00 on Thursday when they square off with the 7-seed in 19-4 Perry-Lecompton.

Trojans enter 3A state tournament with unfinished business

With dry conditions throughout the area, Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan is encouraging residents to be smart and safe when it comes to fire.

Over the weekend, deputies and rural fire district personnel responded to three grass fires sparked by the actions of people and fueled by dry, windy conditions.

Soldan said that just after 4 p.m. Saturday, deputies and Rural Fire District No. 1 personnel responded to a grass fire in a ditch in the 5200 block of E. Magnolia Road. It was discovered that the fire was started by a discarded cigarette.

Then, at approximately 2:53 p.m. Sunday, winds rekindled what had been a controlled burn in a pasture in the 4800 block of E. Farrelly Road the day before, Soldan said. Firefighters from Rural Fire District No. 1, with the assistance of Rural Fire District No. 2, were able to extinguish the blaze.

Then at approximately 4:50 p.m. Sunday in the 2500 block of Erin Way southeast of Salina, the wind and fireplace ashes discarded by a homeowner ignited a grass fire in the yard, Soldan said. Personnel from Rural Fire District No. 5 were able to extinguish the fire.

Joel Michael Pengra, 34, of Waipahu, Hawaii, died February 14, 2023, in Guam while serving as a First-Class Navy Diver.

Joel was born in Salina, Kansas, February 9, 1989, to Robert P. and Christine A. Pengra.&nbsp; His mother proceeded him in death March 18, 1993.&nbsp; Joel was united in marriage to Samantha Teramae October 15, 2016.

Joel was a 2007 graduate of Southeast of Saline High School where he excelled in athletics, especially football and baseball.&nbsp; After graduating, Joel spent a year at Hutchinson Community College studying fire science before enlisting in the Navy in May 2009.&nbsp; In February 2010, Joel graduated from Naval Dive and Salvage Training Center in Panama City, Florida as a Second-Class Navy Diver.&nbsp; He then reported to Yokosuka, Japan.&nbsp; In April 2013, Joel reported to Pearl City, Hawaii and qualified as a First-Class Navy Diver May 2016.&nbsp; Joel completed three tours with SEAL Delivery Vehicle Team One and was most recently a member of Naval Special Warfare Group EIGHT.&nbsp; Joel received numerous medals and decorations during his naval service.

Also preceding Joel in death were his grandparents, Robert L. and Carol Pengra and grandmother Carol Woodard.

Left to mourn are Joel’s wife Samantha, children Ava and Kole, all of home; mom and dad, Angie and Robert Pengra of Salina, KS;&nbsp; sister Alyssa Pengra;&nbsp; twin brother Jordan Pengra and wife Maria;&nbsp; brother Jacob Pengra and wife Megan;&nbsp; nieces and nephews Shailyn Girardot, Mason and Lilah Pengra, all of Kansas City area; grandparents Bob and Amy Pixler; and grandfather Gerald Vanover.&nbsp; Joel also leaves aunts, uncles, cousins and an unmeasurable number of friends and shipmates.

Joel was generous, a loving husband, and trusted father, son, brother, teammate, shipmate, and friend.&nbsp; 

Micah 6:8 describes what God requires to live just, do what’s right, be fair, be kind, and show compassion.&nbsp; Treat each other well, be humble, think of others first and to walk quietly with God.&nbsp; Joel lived as he was required to live.

In Hawaii, there has been a formal military memorial, funeral, and burial service.&nbsp; Joel was laid to rest February 28, in Hawaii Veterans Cemetery, Kaneohe, Oahu, Hawaii.&nbsp; There will be a memorial service honoring Joel Saturday, March 11, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at Emmanuel Foursquare Church, 1325 East Cloud, Salina, Kansas.

The Southeast of Saline boys’ basketball team is officially state bound after defeating Beloit 56-42 in Saturday’s sub-state championship game.

In addition to punching their ticket to Hutch, the Trojans move to 22-1 on the year while Beloit’s campaign comes to a close at 17-6 with half of their total losses coming at the hands of Southeast.

Overall, the purple Trojans played another complete game on Saturday, lacking for very little as they once again asserted their dominance over a league foe.

“I thought we were really tough tonight,” SES head coach Bryson Flax said. “We rebounded at a really high level for long stretches and our defense and bench prevailed once again. We knew it was going to be ugly, it always is with Beloit but we were locked in and I’m proud of my guys for being tough and staying the course.”

Things started well enough for Southeast, who opened the game on an 8-0 run before Beloit struck back with a 12-2 run of their own to take an early lead.

“At that point, I remember thinking ‘we’re in for it, it’s going to be a heck of a game,’ Flax said. “We did some boneheaded things that allowed them to get uncontested shots but you know your players are going to come through for you and I trusted these guys to get the job done.”

After conceding the lead, Beloit fought to keep it close, but the depth and might of SES allowed the Trojans to pull away and punch their ticket to the 3A state tournament.

“Everything needed to have purpose in the second half,” he said. “We needed to keep our composure even-keeled and we needed to be intentional on the boards and every time we put the ball on the floor.”

When all was said and done seven different Trojans entered the scoring column for Southeast, led by Eli Sawyers (13), Luke Gebhardt (12) and Nakari Morrical-Palmer (10).

SES also received a sizable contribution from Caden Isaacson, who played a big role in distributing, as well as on defense in the big win despite not scoring himself.

“I don’t think we win this game without Caden Isaacson,” he said. “He’s a little banged up but he’s a tough son of a gun. He found Drew on two corner threes and he made a lot of good decisions throughout.”

Next up for the Trojans will be a return to the Hutchinson Sports Arena and to the 3A state tournament where eight of the best teams from around the class will duke it out for an elusive state title.

“We have such a good group and I’m proud of them in every way,” Flax said. “I’m excited now for our next journey.”

Trojans take down Beloit to punch ticket to 3A state tournament

The Southeast of Saline girl’s basketball team battled valiantly for 32 minutes in Russell on Saturday, but ultimately fell at the hands of #2 Phillipsburg 51-33 in this year’s sub-state final.

The Lady Trojan's still stellar campaign comes to a close at 19-4, while the Lady Panthers stay undefeated at 23-0, and advance to this year’s 3A state tournament.

Southeast was well aware that it would take their best effort of the season to compete with the division-I talent on Phillipsburg’s roster, and SES did an excellent job of keeping Taryn Sides off balance, holding the future K-State Wildcat to just a lone made three in the first half.

“We knew coming in here that we weren’t couldn’t have many empty possessions and we were going to have to match their scoring,” SES head coach Shauna Smith said. “We knew it was going to be hard to come back, being down ten to them is like being down by 20 but overall I thought we did a tremendous job defensively.”

Despite trailing 27-15 at the half, the Lady Trojans never shrank from the challenge, trimming the lead to as little as six in the third quarter, and back down to five in the fourth before the Lady Panthers pulled away late.

One of those big runs came courtesy of Brielle Ptacek, who scored eight of her twelve points in the third quarter, including a pair of big threes to help cut down the deficit.

“They pressure the ball very hard and Brielle getting some good shots up helped relieve that a little,” Smith said. “We spent so much effort cutting the lead down to six and we knew we weren’t going to be able to press them down the stretch.”

Ptacek was joined in double-digit scoring by Maddie Harris, who also tallied twelve points in this game.

On the Phillipsburg side of things, Sides ended her night as the third leading scorer with 11, with the rest of the Panthers coming up big including a game-high 16 points from Kayla Jacobs and 15 more from Heather Schemper.

While this loss does end the Lady Trojan’s season, another successful campaign only adds to the lore of SES girl’s hoops, and a program that has gone 39-8 over the last two years, with three-straight league titles, two appearances in the sub-state finals, and a trip to the 3A state tournament.

“I’m not disappointed in my girls,” Smith said. “We did what we could offensively to execute and we finish the season 19-4 and as league champs, the girls did an excellent job this year.”

The Southeast of Saline girls and boys basketball teams are playing in the 3A sub-state championship games Saturday in Russell. If you can't make it to the games, Salina Post has you covered.

The girls are scheduled to take on Phillipsburg at 5:30 p.m. The boys are scheduled to take on Beloit at 7 p.m.

The Southeast of Saline boy's basketball team has been rolling down the home stretch of the season, winning 11 straight games ahead of Saturday's sub-state championship bout.

After decimating Phillipsburg 77-48 on Tuesday and Russell 65-38 on Friday, both with running clocks in the fourth quarter, the Trojans will now turn their attention to a familiar league foe, as Southeast prepares to go a third round with Beloit.

After starting their season with back-to-back losses, Beloit has been on a tear as well, posting a record of 17-3 in their next 20 games, including a 74-40 quarterfinal victory over Hoisington, and a 50-33 semifinal win over Norton.

Unfortunately for the orange Trojans, two of those three losses came at the hands of SES, who defeated them 68-46 in December, and 41-33 in early February.

Coming into this one, Southeast is ranked as the #2 team in Class 3A with an overall record of 21-1 while Beloit enters as the bracket 2-seed at 17-5.

Each passing matchup with Beloit has gotten progressively tougher over the last two years, and SES still holds a six-game winning streak in the series but will be on guard tonight on a neutral floor.

"Credit to Ryan Eilert, Beloit has gotten a ton better throughout the year," SES head coach Bryson Flax said. "They truly are playing their best ball now.  Any time your play Beloit it’s a high-intensity ball game and we’re going to have to settle in early and just go compete."

Against the size of Beloit in the post, it will be imperative just as it was in the first two meetings, for the Trojans in purple to crash the boards hard, and to keep the dynamic duo of Bryce Beisner and Wyatt Broeckelman off balance for 32 minutes.

"We have to defend at a high level, make sure we’re in the correct spots, and make a concerted effort to get on the glass," Flax said.

Tip-off between the two Trojans is set for 7:00 at Russell High School, with the winner walking away with a punched ticket to Hutch next week.

The Southeast of Saline girls' basketball team will face their biggest challenge of the season tonight when they return to Russell on Saturday to take on 2nd-ranked Phillipsburg for a ticket to this year's 3A state tournament.

The Lady Trojans come into this contest ranked 8th in Class 3A at 19-3 while the Lady Panthers enter unscathed at a perfect 22-0.

Southeast got to this point with wins of 52-41 over Beloit on Monday, and 48-34 over Hoisington on Thursday to secure their spot in the sub-state finals.

I thought we were solid defensively for 32 minutes against Hoisington," SES head coach Shauna Smith said. "Everyone chipped in at different parts of the game when we needed points."

While the offensive contributions have been spread out in stretches, this playoff run has been the product of stellar play by Reagan Goetz, who has dropped 26 and 20 in the Lady Trojan's two playoff games so far.

SES will need Goetz to come up big again tonight as Southeast stares down the best individual they've faced this season in Kansas State commit Taryn Sides, who has been terrorizing opponents throughout Phillipsburg's undefeated run.

"She's an all-around great player," Smith said. "She isn’t just a scorer but rebounds and gets the ball to her teammates. Our job is going to contain her and make her earn her points and not give any easy baskets off turnovers to her."

The play of the future DI product has helped Phillipsburg to cruise through the sub-state bracket, knocking off Russell 59-11 in the quarterfinal and Norton 66-47 in the semis.

While Sides holds the advantage in any shootout, the Lady Trojan's gritty, at times infuriating to face defensive prowess has kept them in games just like this one, allowing them to defeat teams like #3 Hillsboro already this season.
