SEDGWICK COUNTY —A Kansas teacher accused of alleged sex crimes made his first court appearance in the case Monday.

Shawn Wingfield, 48, was charged with two counts of sexual exploitation of a child, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

In June, police in Wichita were alerted to a concerning text messages sent by 48-year-old Shawn Wingfield, according to Officer Charley Davidson.&nbsp;

USD 259 listed Wingfield as a gifted-6 teacher at Wichita Northwest High School. His linkdin profile said he also was involved with debate and forensics.

Further investigation into the text messages led police to arrest Wingfield on Saturday and he was booked&nbsp; into the Sedgwick County Jail <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=305200">on requested</a> charges of sexual exploitation of a child.&nbsp;

Earlier this month, Wingfield wrote on social media," This morning, for reasons involving personal health and well being, I resigned from Wichita Public Schools. Without going into details, I have come to believe that this is not only the best decision for myself, but also for the district and my students. And while I do regret the timing of this decision so close to the start of the new school year, I believe that to stay any longer would prove to be a greater inconvenience to everyone in the end."

On Saturday Wingfield&nbsp; wrote on social media, "Time for me to check out for a while.  A little earlier than I had hoped.  See everyone, I hope, on the other side."

Kan. teacher charged with sex crimes after text message investigation

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas felon after an early morning traffic stop.

Just after 2a.m. Monday,&nbsp;&nbsp;a deputy conducted a traffic stop on white 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck at North Kansas Avenue and NE Fairchild Street for a broken taillight, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

 As the officer approached the pickup truck, the driver later identified as 22-year-old Austin D. Reisinger  sped away, struck a curb and fled from the pickup on foot. 

Within minutes, deputies located Reisinger and took him into custody.&nbsp;During the investigation, deputies found a loaded firearm and drug paraphernalia inside the pickup truck.

Reisinger was booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of felon in possession of a firearm, possession of drug paraphernalia, flee and elude and multiple traffic offenses.

Anna attended Central Community Church in Wichita.&nbsp;

She enjoyed puzzles, puzzle books and most of all spending time with her family, especially her beloved grandchildren.&nbsp;

Anna is survived by her daughter Kristine Hudeib, her two sons James and Jonathan Kiel, all of Wichita, KS; five grandchildren, one great-grandchild,&nbsp; two sisters, Mary Jones, Salina, KS; Bernadetta McCollum (Leland), Clay Center, KS; and brothe, David Vopat, Mankato, KS.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents David and Marcella, and sister Elizabeth Grant.&nbsp;

He was a Navy veteran, retired from fabrication at Power Vac Inc. after 34 years. He loved hunting, fishing and was an avid book reader. He loved to travel to places to learn about history, especially about Kansas. He loved tinkering in his garage and figuring out how to build things. He enjoyed helping others when they needed help. He had a very big love for his family and grandchildren.

Survivors include wife Marcia Fuller; three daughters, Valeri Andrews of San Antonio, Crystal Fuller and Paula Hanchett both of Salina; two grandchildren, Angelina Hanchett and Slade Hanchett, both of Salina; a sister-in-law; two brothers-in-law and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Raymond W. Fuller and Mary Ruth (Cobb) Fuller.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 30, 2021, graveside at Gypsum Hill Cemetery, Salina.

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a stabbing and have made an arrest.

Just after 9:00 p.m. Sunday, police responded to the 700 block of NE Twiss Avenue in Topeka on a report of a stabbing, according to police spokesperson Gretchen Spiker.

Upon arrival, officers located a man suffering from serious injuries. He was transported to a local hospital by American Medical Response.

While additional officers were responding to the scene, witnesses described the suspect vehicle. Police located a vehicle matching the description, stopped it and arrested 35-year-old Bobby L. Cott, without incident.

&nbsp;Cox was booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of Aggravated battery. The suspect and victim are known to one another, according to police.

He was transported to a local hospital by American Medical Response.While additional officers were responding to the scene, witnesses described the suspect vehicle. Police located a vehicle matching the description, stopped it and arrested 35-year-old Bobby L. Cott, without incident.&nbsp;Cox was booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of Aggravated battery. The suspect and victim are known to one another, according to police.

The case against Wingfield was presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office. He remains jailed on a $50,000 bond, according to online court records and was expected in court on Monday afternoon, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

His linkdin profile said he also was involved with debate and forensics.Further investigation into the text messages led police to arrest Wingfield on Saturday and he was booked&nbsp; into the Sedgwick County Jail <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=305200">on requested</a> charges of sexual exploitation of a child.&nbsp;Earlier this month, Wingfield wrote on social media," This morning, for reasons involving personal health and well being, I resigned from Wichita Public Schools. Kan. teacher jailed after text message investigation

Edna Marian King, resident of Mitchell County Resident Care Center in Beloit, KS passed away peacefully on July 20, 2021, at age 87.&nbsp; She was the youngest of ten children born to Phillip and Janie (Griffin) Zillinger on March 13, 1934, in Logan, KS.&nbsp; Affectionately known as Marian, she attended schools in Phillips County.&nbsp; Marian was raised on a farm and her favorite childhood memory was on the 4th&nbsp;of July when they had firecrackers and homemade ice cream.&nbsp; She married Melvin King on Sept 22, 1950, in Stockton, KS and was married 31 years.&nbsp; She was a member of the Church of Christ. To this union, six children were born.&nbsp; She worked outside the home when the children got older, as a bookkeeper until she retired. While living in Hays, KS she enjoyed working with the Senior Companion program to assist seniors that were alone and still living in their homes. She enjoyed sewing, quilting and crafting and loved to crochet and embroider.&nbsp; She had travels to 15 states and enjoyed her family and the many friendships that she made along the way. Things that were important in the family were working hard, doing well in school and playing fair.&nbsp; She loved doing things with and for her family.

She is survived by five children:&nbsp; Patrick King, Hays, KS; Diana Stoeber (John), Jewell, KS; Renee Thompson (Rick), Glade, KS; Terali Richardson (Jim), Salina, KS; David King (Lily), Umatilla, FL.&nbsp; She is survived by 9 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild.&nbsp; Also survived by one brother Ray Zillinger (Donna) and sister-in-law Betty Zillinger and a host of nieces and nephews

SEDGWICK COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities&nbsp; investigating a fatal July 17 gunfight at a Kansas home have arrested a second suspect identified as 20-year-old Tyler Kelly of Wichita.

Just before 10p.m. Saturday, July 17, police responded to a burglary in progress call at a home in the 2600 block of North Piatt in Wichita, according to Officer Charley Davidson.&nbsp;

 Upon arrival, officers located a 16-year-old victim who had been shot.&nbsp; He was taken to an area hospital, where he died.

While investigating the scene, a 16-year-old male suspect and Kelly arrived at an area hospital with gunshot wounds.&nbsp; 

The 16-year-old was treated, released, and booked into jail. Kelly was released from hospital Friday after treatment of a serious but non-life-threatening injuries, according to Davidson. 

Police <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=20071701">booked him Friday afternoon </a>on requested charges of first degree murder and aggravated assault, according to Officer Trevor Macy.

The investigation revealed Kelly and the teen suspect and the victim are known to each other.&nbsp; The suspects arrived at the victim’s home, a disturbance ensued, and multiple shots were fired that struck all three individuals.&nbsp; Investigators have recovered two handguns during the investigation.

This was not a random incident, according to Davidson.&nbsp;Police will present the case to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office.

Suspect in fatal Kan. gunfight moved from hospital to jail

Just after 3:30a.m. Saturday, July 24 at around responded to a single vehicle crash near the intersection of SE 29th Street and SE Adams Street, according to police spokesperson Gretchen Spiker.

Responding officers located a single passenger identified as Ramirez Soto suffering from serious injuries. Officers attempted life-saving measures and American Medical Response personnel responded to the scene and pronounced Ramirez Soto deceased at the scene.&nbsp;

The driver of the vehicle, Cesar R. Carreto-Orozco, 39 of Topeka was located nearby the crash scene and was uninjured. As a result of the investigation police arrested Carreto-Orozco on requested&nbsp;charges of Involuntary manslaughter; While under the influence of alcohol or drugs, Improper Driving On Laned Roadway and Operate a motor vehicle without a valid license, according to Spiker.

Update: Police arrest driver, ID Kan. man who died in crash

Critical Race Theory (CRT) has led to unnecessary alarm across the country at both K–12 and higher education levels. One portion of the public believes teachers should only teach what their local or state school boards approve. Another portion believes that teachers have some sort of absolute academic freedom and unlimited free speech. Both are wrong. It is far more complex.

Although free speech and academic freedom are often used interchangeably, they are different.&nbsp; Academic freedom is exercised by teachers and professors within classrooms with their students. It is an attribute of the teaching profession. Free speech occurs in public and outside of the classroom.

Consider the following “teachings”:

A geology teacher claims the earth is flat. &nbsp;

A history teacher states the Holocaust never happened.

A math teacher contends two-plus-two equals five.

If these are the true actions of these teachers (and not a teaching method to get students to think and arrive at the real answers), these teachers can and should be fired for incompetence.

When a California science teacher contended he had an academic freedom to refuse to teach evolution when it was part of the curriculum—he lost. In Peloza v. Capistrano (1994), the court ruled that school districts can require teachers to teach evolution. Earlier in Webster v. New Lenox (1990) the court ruled that school districts can prohibit the teaching of creationism. And in Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District (2005), the judge ruled that a supposedly non-religious “alternative” view of biological evolution called “intelligent design” could not be taught as science.

In all cases, the courts turned to the profession to determine the legitimacy of the content. —Not the local or state school boards. —Not the whims of the teacher. And any university teacher ed program that trains future geology teachers that the earth is flat, or math student teachers that two-plus-two equals five will lose its accreditation because it contradicts the current knowledge-base of those professions.

The consequences of mis-teaching are real. Any country where the bulk of citizens believe the earth is flat or two-plus-two equals five is not going to launch a satellite into space. The last veterans who witnessed the liberation of Auschwitz are nearly gone, but the extensive documentation remains and a country that denies the Holocaust will feed future supremist movements. Yesterday’s history matters today, or we would not bother to teach it.

Countries will downplay their mistakes. Japan today omits from its history books major terrible atrocities committed in World War II. The Tulsa race riot of 1921 was not in our history books., but it was of a scale that deserves to be included. Good teachers promote reasoned discussion. They do not impose guilt trips. Teachers are frontline professionals representing their professions. And that is where professional content is defined. —Again, not by local or state school boards. —Not by legislatures. The courts ultimately turn to the profession to define legitimate content.

Education Week recently reviewed the CRT laws just passed by ten states. The most recent act in Tennessee was a complaint that “...a lesson on Ruby Bridges, the first Black child to desegregate an elementary school in Louisiana, made white students feel uncomfortable” and thus violated their new CRT law. If Japan can hide its past, we should too? –Because some might be “uncomfortable?

When the Arkansas legislature made it a crime for medical doctors to perform fully professional treatments and surgery on trans kids, they violated the jurisdiction of the medical profession. As more states strive to regulate what the teaching profession considers factual, they are joining ranks with autocrats in Poland and Hungary and Belarus that choose to hide or distort their history, and compel educational professionals to be unprofessional.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

Unfortunately, it is a shortcoming of our system that it will take time for this intrusion into teacher professionalism to make its way to a higher court. Meanwhile, this growing tendency for legislatures to dictate professional practice will take a toll, in veteran teachers resigning and in college students diverting away from pursing teaching.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

ED FRONTLINES: Academic freedom has professional limits

WICHITA – A significant increase in the time it is taking the U.S. State Department to process passports is forcing many travelers to postpone previously booked vacations. 

With that in mind, AAA is urging anyone planning or hoping to travel out of the United States this year or next to initiate the passport process now or risk having those plans derailed by the delays.

“At AAA, we are seeing travelers, sometimes entire families, that have been forced to cancel or postpone their trips because passport processing has taken longer than they anticipated,” said Matt Bert, travel advisor for AAA Kansas. “One of the first questions we are now asking our clients is about the passport status of all travelers.”

At this time, the State Department says passport application is taking more than four months (18 weeks). And, ‘expedited’ service may only shorten the wait to three months.

AAA travel advisors say passport processing times are&nbsp;three times as long as the average wait time prior to the pandemic. The&nbsp;<a href="http://aaacluballiance.pr-optout.com/Tracking.aspx?Data=HHL%3d9%2b3893-%3eLCE59.%3c5%3a%26SDG%3c90%3a.&amp;RE=MC&amp;RI=5430239&amp;Preview=False&amp;DistributionActionID=445311&amp;Action=Follow+Link" target="_blank">State Department website</a>&nbsp;indicates the dramatic delays&nbsp;are the result of COVID-related issues and high demand.

“Some travelers with bookings&nbsp;this summer have already had to postpone until next year,” Bert added. “And, for those who are uninsured for such a change in plans, the cancellation is much more than an inconvenience. It’s a costly miscalculation.”

The passport delay issue is not just affecting those applying for new passports or renewing passports set to expire. AAA is reminding travelers that many countries now require the passport expiration date to be at least six months after the date of return travel so anyone planning travel through 2022 is strongly urged to begin the passport renewal process now.

Friends of the Library sale of items for young people Thursday

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man on drug charges after a traffic stop on a bicycle.

Just before 9:30p.m. July 22, a deputy conducted a traffic stop on a bicycle in the 300 block of NW Paramore Street in Topeka for failing to have a headlight, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

During the investigation, it was discovered that the bicycle rider 31-year-0ld Carlos A. Brown of Topeka, had a felony warrant out of Jackson County. Brown was placed into custody and deputies also located illegal narcotics.

Brown was booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections for his felony warrant and also faced requested charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia and a bicycle not equipped with a lamp when in use at night.

Potwin, Kansas – Miriam Kay McLain, 83, retired Goddard Public Schools 3rd grade teacher of 39 years passed away July 23, 2021. She was born November 29, 1937. Miriam grew up in Potwin and graduated from Potwin High School as the salutatorian of her class, and also from Butler County Junior College. 

She began her teaching career at the age of 19 while completing her bachelor of science in education degree from Emporia State Teacher's College. She went on to also complete her master of education degree from Emporia State University. &nbsp;Miriam was named a Who's Who Among American Teachers recipient and was also named The Outstanding Elementary Teacher of America in 1973.

During her newspaper recognition interview, she proudly stated that while she was of sound enough mind and body to enjoy her weekends, she enjoyed teaching enough to look forward to Monday mornings each new week. During her retirement years she enjoyed her word puzzles and being an avid reader. She also enjoyed being involved in her nieces' and nephews' educations.

Survivors include: nieces Mary (Ray) Brown, Laura (Terry) Kilgore; nephew George (Pat) Kasper; many other nieces and nephews and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her parents Arthur and Anna (Thomas) McLain and all of her brothers and sisters, Dorothy Young, Ellen Criger, Wilma Criger, Margaret Kasper, and Arthur McLain Jr. and half-brother Warren McLain and half-sister Mary Whiteside.
