SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a sexual assault and have a&nbsp; suspect in custody.

Just before 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, police responded to a 911 call on N. Ash in Wichita, according to a media release.

 They contacted a female victim who reported being raped by an unknown man. The victim reported that she had been talking to the suspect online. 

After talking online, the suspect went to the victim's home. When the suspect arrived at the home, the victim realized it was not the person she thought she had been talking to. The suspect then entered her home and sexually assaulted her before leaving.

Officers identified the suspect as 35-year-old Jeffrey Scroggins. Officers located and took him into custody in the 1900 block of W. 35th Street South in Wichita.

 He was interviewed by Domestic Violence-Sex Crimes detectives and then booked into the Sedgwick County Jail&nbsp;on requested charges of Aggravated Burglary and Rape.

For the second time in as many seasons, the Southeast of Saline Trojan football team will enter the playoffs undefeated.

Dating back to 2019, SES has won their last 17 regular-season contests, and is primed to make another deep playoff run after finishing 2021 a perfect 8-0.

The Trojans capped off their district title run with a 42-0 win over the Scott City Beavers, dominating all three facets of the game to wrap up a perfect 5-0 district slate.

“I thought we did some things well but we were sloppy at times also,” SES head coach Mitch Gebhardt said. “Defensively we held another team to zero and we had some young kids get in and play some really good minutes for us.”

The Trojan defense continues to play like one of the best units in the state, pitching an unheard-of six shutouts throughout the season and outscoring their district by a combined score of 256-0.

Southeast wasted no time getting on the board as quarterback Luke Gebhardt punched in the first touchdown of the day on a 32-yard house call.

Gebhardt put on a show in the first quarter, rushing for over 100 yards and adding a second rushing TD to the Trojan total before the first twelve minutes were even in the books.

That momentum spilled over into the second quarter as a Gebhardt strike to Michael Murray and a pick-six by Caden Isaacson put the Trojans on top 30-0 at the half.

While the offense moved the ball at will, the SES defense put on a show of their own, sacking the Scott City quarterback eight times to pile onto a 24-sack performance this season.

The Beavers came close to the red zone on a few occasions, but even with their JV defense in, Southeast held the line, preventing a fifth consecutive opponent from putting a single point on the scoreboard.

“We’ve got some guys that like hard-hitting football and I really feel like our kids were pretty physical tonight,” Gebhardt said. “That’s a big step for some of those younger guys.”

The Trojans will open their postseason at home against the 2-5 Marysville Bulldogs, who fell by just 12 points to an undefeated Riley County team this week.

“Marysville is a good football team,” Gebhardt said. “We watched a little bit of film on them earlier this year and they do a nice job so we’re going to have to get things lined up and ready to go.”

Trojans beat Beavers 42-0 to cap off second-straight undefeated regular season

Jenny’s life began on November 7, 1990, the daughter of Jeff and Dawn Lee in Hastings, Michigan. She graduated from Lynnville-Sully High Class of 2008 in Sully, Iowa.

 Oklahoma Wesleyan is where she completed her history and political science degrees. She was also working on her masters in education, also at Oklahoma Wesleyan. 

She married Shaun Craft on December 9, 2017 in Elmdale, Kansas. 

She taught in Marion as a Title 1 educator.

She loved her family and enjoyed being a mother along with camping, lake life, swimming, gardening, cooking, reading and naps. Her loving family includes her husband Shaun; parents Jeff and Dawn Lee; children Colt, Gannon and Iliana Craft all of Marion; siblings and their spouses Ryan Lee (Amanda) of Hillsboro, Amanda Murray (Jason) of Hartford, Iowa, Catherine Zurcher (Lucas) of Marion; nieces and nephews Alexandria, Miriam, Jonah and Grace Lee, Landon, Brant, and Gavin Murray, Vance and Ransom Scholten, Eivin, Wesley and Jackson Zurcher. SEDGWICK COUNTY — A Kansas felon accused in the Sept. 7, mass shooting at a Wichita night club and arrested in Arizona was booked into jail in Kansas Wednesday afternoon and made his first court appearance Thursday.

<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=20044181">Keshawn Dawson, 23 of Wichita, </a>was charged with 1st degree intentional murder, 1st degree murder in the commission of a felony, six counts of aggravated battery, and criminal discharge of a firearm, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

Dawson is also charged in two separate cases for criminal possession of a weapon by a convicted felon for an incident on June 15, and&nbsp; criminal possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, possession of marijuana, and possession of paraphernalia for use involving an arrest in January, according to the district attorney.

On Oct. 8, U.S. Marshals arrested Dawson in Phoenix Arizona., according to officer Charley Davidson. Dawson is being held on bond of five-million dollars for a shooting that killed 34-year-old Preston Spencer and injured six others with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.

At approximately 12:40 a.m. on Sept. 7, officers responded to a shooting call at the Enigma Club, 351 N. Mosely.&nbsp; Upon arrival, officers located multiple victims that were all transported to an area hospital for medical treatment.&nbsp; The investigation revealed Dawson got into a disturbance earlier inside the club and was forced to leave.&nbsp; Dawson returned a short time later and fired multiple rounds with a handgun through windows into the club from the outside, striking the victims.

In addition, Dawson had active felony Sedgwick County warrants and was prohibited from possessing a firearm due to previous felony convictions, according to Davidson.

Dawson's next court appearance is November 4, according to the district attorney's office.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Bo’s life began on February 28, 1957, the son of Hiram and Dorothy (McLain) Young in Newton, Kansas. He graduated from Fredric Remington High Class of 1975 and then attended Butler Community College on a football scholarship. He married DeVesta Arlene Smith on August 21, 1977 at the Christian Church in Potwin, Kansas.

He was a contract welder and retired as a welding supervisor at ConFab in El Dorado. He loved his family and enjoyed barbequing, creating welding projects with benches and artwork, fishing, hunting, and working in his backyard. His loving family includes his wife of 44 years, DeVesta, of the home; son and his wife, Ryan and Rachel Young of Jefferson City, Montana; daughter and her husband, Adriane and Grant Bowlin of Whitewater, Kansas; grandchildren (nicknames from grandad in quotes) Matthew “Roscoe” Young and Lilli “Skeeter Bump” Young, Jude “Rufus” Bowlin, Julian “Spanky” Bowlin and Jentry “Fish Bait” Bowlin; brothers, Hiram (Mary) Young of Salina, Oklahoma, Charles Young of El Dorado, Kansas, Floyd (Tina) Young of Kansas City, Missouri; sisters Evelyn Shultz of Potwin, Kansas, Elizabeth Pugh and Edna Place both of Wichita, Kansas; brother-in-law Raymond (Nancy) Smith of Rose Hill, Kansas and many nieces and nephews. Robert 'Bo' Wesley Young

Les’s life began on February 23, 1935, the son of Harlan McClendon and Opal (Miller) Johnson in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He was 13 years old when he accepted the Lord as his Savior in a small Baptist church in Los Alamos, New Mexico. He attended Los Alamos schools and graduated with a degree in English from New Mexico Western University in Silver City, New Mexico.

At age 17 he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served as a sergeant in the Korean War for four years from January 1952 to January 1956. He was awarded the badge of expert marksmanship. When he returned home, he married Teresa Ann Gonzales on August 18, 1956 in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Les loved outdoor activities including gardening, fishing, and hunting.

He taught English in several high schools and later became a jeweler in Richardson, Texas. Les and Teresa lived there for 32 years. When he retired, they moved to Newton, Kansas where they were members of Koerner Heights Church. He volunteered to teach Release Time Bible School and served at Source of Light, a correspondence prison ministry. He loved reading and memorizing scripture. One of the legacies that he leaves is his twenty-plus Bibles that were full of highlighted and crossreferenced, with handwritten notes. He devoted his life to reading and studying God’s Word.

His loving family includes his wife of 65 years, Teresa of the home; children Steve McClendon (Ursula) of Marble Falls, Texas, Byron McClendon (Cindy) of Carrollton, Texas, Elizabeth Claassen (Greg) of Whitewater, Kansas, David McClendon of Richardson, Texas; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Harlan McClendon and his mother Opal (McClendon) Johnson.

Les passed away peacefully into his loving Savior’s arms on Tuesday, October 19, 2021 at the age of 86 years old.

His family will gather with friends on Thursday, October 21, from 5-7 p.m.&nbsp;at Lamb Funeral Home, 120 S. Main, Whitewater, Kansas. Private internment will be held in Green Valley Cemetery in Furley, Kansas.

Marla Joy Jorgensen, age 69, left this earthly life on Thursday, October 21, 2021, surrounded by her family at the Cloud County Health Center, Concordia, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born in Belleville, KS on March 23, 1952 to Edgar Lee and Wanda Lee (Cline) Kalivoda.

Marla graduated as a co-valedictorian from Concordia High School in 1970.&nbsp; She later graduated from Kansas State University with a bachelor’s degree in nuclear engineering and a master’s degree in accounting in 1981.&nbsp; Her career as an accounting manager and business controller for Conoco Philips took her to many places around the globe including London, Australia, Alaska and Indonesia, to name a few.

She returned to Concordia upon her retirement from Conoco and proceeded to open and operate Marla’s Joy Tea House and later Common Ground Coffee House.&nbsp; She was an active member of the Living Hope Foursquare Church and was a member of the Concordia Rotary Club.

She married her Concordia high school classmate Lee Gale on Aug. 12, 2017.

Many of those who know Marla would use words to describe her such as: intelligent, exploring, curious, community, giving, dedicated, entrepreneurial, strong-willed, survivor, creative/crafty and trusting.

She is survived by her husband, Lee Gale, Concordia; sons James Jorgensen (Natalie), Houston, TX, and Keith Jorgensen, Houston, TX; sister Anita Ricablanca (Dennis), San Diego, CA; brother Lee Kalivoda (Elaine), Maple Grove, MN and grandchildren Kaleb, Noel, Isaac, Levi and Joy.

Marla was preceded in death by her parents.

It was Marla’s wishes to be cremated and a memorial graveside service will be 1:30 p.m., Monday, October 25, 2021 at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Concordia with Pastor Dwight Whitead officiating.&nbsp; The family will greet friends from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., Saturday, October 23, 2021 at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home, Concordia.&nbsp; Friends may sign the register book from 1-5 p.m., Friday, October 22, 2021 at the funeral home.

SEDGWICK COUNTY — A Kansas felon accused in the Sept. 7 mass shooting at a Wichita night club and arrested in Arizona is back in a Kansas jail.

Keshawn Dawson, 23, was booked into the Sedgwick County<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=20044181"> Jail just after 4p.m.</a> Wednesday, according to online jail records.

On Oct. 8, U.S. Marshals arrested Dawson in Phoenix Arizona., according to officer Charley Davidson. Dawson is being held on requested charges that include murder, aggravated battery and more stemming from a shooting that killed 34-year-old Preston Spencer and injured six others with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.

Mosely.&nbsp; Upon arrival, officers located multiple victims that were all transported to an area hospital for medical treatment.&nbsp; The investigation revealed Dawson got into a disturbance earlier inside the club and was forced to leave.&nbsp; Dawson returned a short time later and fired multiple rounds with a handgun through windows into the club from the outside, striking the victims.In addition, Dawson had active felony Sedgwick County warrants and was prohibited from possessing a firearm due to previous felony convictions, according to Davidson.

AAA: Car care even more critical as drivers are keeping vehicles longer

Joseph Augustive Nowak,&nbsp;Surprise, Nebraska

Joseph Augustive Nowak, age 88, peacefully passed away at his home of the past four years in Surprise, Nebraska. He was born at the family dairy in Castle Rock Township, “The Ridge” Wisconsin on April 3, 1933 to Gustave and Emma (Prochaska) Nowak. He was the sixth of 10 children.

Joe grew up on the family dairy farm, milking cows since the age of six. Other than helping on the farm, during his high school years he also worked at a cream corn factory. On occasion cans would explode (which didn’t smell very good), and Joe said he could never eat creamed corn the rest of his life due that experience….and he never did!

After graduating from Monfort High School, Joe joined the Air Force serving in the 40th Air Refueling Squadron assigned to the 40th Bombardment Wing at Smoky Hill Air Force Base. While stationed at Smoky Hill AFB in Salina, Kansas, he attended a polka dance at the Star Lite Ballroom in Pilsen. It was during this dance that Joe met the love of his life, JoAnn Svoboda. He had to ask JoAnn’s five rather large brothers for permission to take her home the night they met. Their courtship continued while he served his military time. One funny story Joe liked to share was teasing JoAnn that while stationed in Greenland there was a girl behind every tree (there were no trees in Greenland!).

Following an honorable discharge from the Air Force, Joe and JoAnn married on August 20, 1957 at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, Pilsen, Kansas and Pilsen is where they made their home until moving to Nebraska in 2017. Seven children were born from this 64+ year union, and Joe became known as “Pa” to his children and all their friends. 

Early in their marriage, Joe worked at various jobs including Boeing in Wichita. He eventually began working with his brother-in-law, Gerald, in soil conservation. Eventually, Joe and his sons formed Joe Nowak and Sons, Inc. (now known as Nowak Construction Inc. based in Goddard, Kansas). After long days in the field, Joe spent many late nights repairing radiators for the local farmers and other patrons at Nowak Radiator Service in Pilsen.

Joe, being civic-minded, was a life-long member of the Tampa American Legion Post 372, a member of the USD 397 school board (1977-1981), lay distributor, cemetery board member and religion teacher at St. John Nepomucene, Marion County Soil Conservation board, and various other committees and roles.

Upon Joe’s retirement, he and JoAnn were able to take some adventurous trips seeing other parts of the country and the world, including the Holy Land in the Middle East. Joe also enjoyed spending hours woodworking in his shop making cedar chests, shelves, chests of drawers, desks and other requests from family members. Most evenings it was hard to find him without a book reading Louis L’Amour, John Grisham and many other authors.

Joe loved all sports, especially the Green Bay Packers (he was a total Cheese Head!), the Kansas City Royals, and Tiger Woods golf. He was also an avid fisherman going on various trips, including Lake Texoma, the Gulf of Mexico and Alaska. He loved spending time with his Kansas and Wisconsin families—visiting, playing pitch, blackjack, Uecker and Tripoly. He had a wonderful sense of humor and a gentle nature. Joe’s life was a testament to his faith.

Joe is survived by his wife JoAnn of the home, his seven children, Joseph B (Yolanda) Nowak, Goddard; John (Judy) Nowak, Garden Plain; Jerry (Mary Mercado) Nowak, Vernon, Texas; Judy Steinborn (Thane Schwartz), Marion; Jackie (Paul) Gengler, Salina; Jan (Jayson) Hanschu, Hillsboro; Jennifer (Tim) Frasher, Surprise, Nebraska, 34 grandchildren, six stepgrandchildren and many great-grandchildren, one sister, Evelyn “Pat” Nowak, Grafton, Wisconsin and two sisters-in-law, Susan Nowak, Franklin, Wisconsin and Delores Svoboda, Herington, and many nieces and nephews and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents Gustave and Emma Nowak, sisters Bernadette (Len) Cummings, Alberta (Jim) Sullivan, Mary (Jim) Margis, Rita (Ike) Edge, brothers Jim (Doris) Nowak, George, Tony and Tom Nowak, brothers and sisters-in-law Geraldine Svoboda, Gerald (Barbara) Svoboda, Ted (JoAnn) Svoboda, Lawrence Svoboda, John (Mary) Svoboda, and Jimmy Svoboda.

He was born at the family dairy in Castle Rock Township, “The Ridge” Wisconsin on April 3, 1933 to Gustave and Emma (Prochaska) Nowak. He was the sixth of 10 children.Joe grew up on the family dairy farm, milking cows since the age of six. Other than helping on the farm, during his high school years he also worked at a cream corn factory. On occasion cans would explode (which didn’t smell very good), and Joe said he could never eat creamed corn the rest of his life due that experience….and he never did! After graduating from Monfort High School, Joe joined the Air Force serving in the 40th Air Refueling Squadron assigned to the 40th Bombardment Wing at Smoky Hill Air Force Base. While stationed at Smoky Hill AFB in Salina, Kansas, he attended a polka dance at the Star Lite Ballroom in Pilsen. It was during this dance that Joe met the love of his life, JoAnn Svoboda. He had to ask JoAnn’s five rather large brothers for permission to take her home the night they met. Their courtship continued while he served his military time. One funny story Joe liked to share was teasing JoAnn that while stationed in Greenland there was a girl behind every tree (there were no trees in Greenland!). Following an honorable discharge from the Air Force, Joe and JoAnn married on August 20, 1957 at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, Pilsen, Kansas and Pilsen is where they made their home until moving to Nebraska in 2017. Seven children were born from this 64+ year union, and Joe became known as “Pa” to his children and all their friends. Early in their marriage, Joe worked at various jobs including Boeing in Wichita. He eventually began working with his brother-in-law, Gerald, in soil conservation. Eventually, Joe and his sons formed Joe Nowak and Sons, Inc. (now known as Nowak Construction Inc. based in Goddard, Kansas). After long days in the field, Joe spent many late nights repairing radiators for the local farmers and other patrons at Nowak Radiator Service in Pilsen.Joe, being civic-minded, was a life-long member of the Tampa American Legion Post 372, a member of the USD 397 school board (1977-1981), lay distributor, cemetery board member and religion teacher at St. John Nepomucene, Marion County Soil Conservation board, and various other committees and roles. Upon Joe’s retirement, he and JoAnn were able to take some adventurous trips seeing other parts of the country and the world, including the Holy Land in the Middle East. Joe also enjoyed spending hours woodworking in his shop making cedar chests, shelves, chests of drawers, desks and other requests from family members. Most evenings it was hard to find him without a book reading Louis L’Amour, John Grisham and many other authors.Joe loved all sports, especially the Green Bay Packers (he was a total Cheese Head!), the Kansas City Royals, and Tiger Woods golf. He was also an avid fisherman going on various trips, including Lake Texoma, the Gulf of Mexico and Alaska. He loved spending time with his Kansas and Wisconsin families—visiting, playing pitch, blackjack, Uecker and Tripoly. He had a wonderful sense of humor and a gentle nature. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — An investigation is underway after a jail detainee was found dead at the Shawnee County Adult Detention Center in Topeka. 

The Shawnee County Department of Corrections says 58-year-old Curley Charles Anderson Jr. was booked into the jail on Friday on charges that included aggravated battery, driving while license suspended and reckless driving. 

At 4:14 p.m. Monday, authorities were alerted to a medical emergency and Anderson was found unresponsive in his cell. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. In addition to an internal investigation, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation is looking into Anderson’s death.

He had over a dozen previous felony convictions that included forgery, burglary, theft, criminal threat, aggravated battery, aiding a felon, driving while suspended and for drugs. He had been out of prison since January of 2020, according to the Kansas Dept. of Corrections.
