FINNEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a child sex crime and have made an arrest.

Just after 7:p.m. Tuesday., police were dispatched to the north part of Garden City, where a man was reported to be exposing himself to small children, according to a media release.

Upon arrival, Officers spoke with the reporting party, who told Officers that an 11-year-old child said a man was showing them his&nbsp;genitalia.

The investigation revealed the child was walking in a parking lot when a man sitting in a vehicle revved the engine to get the child’s attention. As the child approached the vehicle, the man was allegedly exposing himself and tried soliciting the child. The child ran from the area looking for help before finding the reporting party. 

Through further investigation, police identified 19-year-old Robert Lozano of Garden City, as the suspect and took him into custody. 

Lozano was booked on requested charges of Aggravated Indecent Solicitation of a Child and Lewd and Lascivious Behavior. He is no longer in custody, according to online records.

LOS ANGELES –&nbsp;Kansas senior Ochai Agbaji has been named one of five finalists for the 2022 John R. Wooden Award Men’s Player of the Year. The Los Angeles Athletic Club announced the All-American Team and the five finalists Wednesday evening on ESPNU.

Agbaji becomes the 25th Jayhawk to be named a Wooden Award All-American all-time and the first since 2020, when Udoka Azubuike and Devon Dotson both earned the honor. Agbaji now seeks to become the third Kansas player to win the Wooden Award, joining Frank Mason III (2017) and Danny Manning (1988).

Joining Agbaji as finalists for the Wooden Award are Johnny Davis (Wisconsin), Keegan Murray (Iowa), Drew Timme (Gonzaga) and Oscar Tshiebwe (Kentucky). Agbaji is the lone finalist still competing in the 2022 NCAA Tournament. All five players have been invited to Los Angeles for the 46th annual presentation of the John R. Wooden Award Presented by Wendy’s Gala.

Agbaji has already earned what will be announced as Consensus All-America First Team honors by collecting All-America first-team nods from the NABC, AP, The Sporting News and USBWA. Those four entities make up the collaboration of the consensus teams recognized by the NCAA. Agbaji is Kansas’ 31st all-time Consensus All-America First Team selection, which is more than any other school. He is the first Jayhawk to earn the honor since Devonte’ Graham in 2018.

Also a finalist for the Naismith Trophy, Agbaji was named the 2022 Big 12 Player of the Year after leading the conference in scoring and he enters the Final Four with an average of 18.9 points per game. He is second in the league in three-point field goal percentage (39.8%, 35th nationally) and third in three-point field goals made per game (2.6, 71st nationally). He was also named the Big 12 Championship Most Outstanding Player and an all-tournament selection in guiding Kansas to the tourney title earlier this month.

A four-year starter for KU, Agbaji has etched his name into the Kansas records book. He holds the record for consecutive games of three-point field goals made at 53. The Kansas City, Missouri, native also ranks 16th on the KU career scoring list with 1,619 points, fourth on the three-point field goals made (243) and fourth on three-point field goals attempted (659).

The 46th annual John R. Wooden Award Presented by Wendy’s Men’s Player of the Year will be announced on Tuesday on SportsCenter on ESPN. The John R. Wooden Award Presented by Wendy’s Gala will honor the Men’s and Women’s Wooden Award winners, and will include the presentation of the Wooden Award All American Teams and the Legends of Coaching Award, this year given to Rick Byrd. The Gala will take place at the Los Angeles Athletic Club on Friday, April 8th.

Jacqueline “Jackie” Janet (Lilly) Reed, 87, passed from this life on March 29, 2022 in the comfort of her home.&nbsp; She was born November 8, 1934 in Belleville, Kansas, the daughter of Jack &amp; Agnes (Jensen) Lilly.&nbsp; She moved to California in 1942 where she was educated and lived throughout her childhood.&nbsp; Jackie graduated from Leuzinger High School, Hawthorne, California in 1952.&nbsp; 

She married Reginald “Reggie” O. Reed in Quartzsite, Arizona on November 7, 1953 and returned to Kansas.

Jackie, Reggie and family farmed in Republic County Kansas their entire married life.&nbsp; While being an active farm wife, Jackie was also employed off the farm over the years at the Republic Co. FSA, Clarence Gile Insurance Agency, and managing agent of the Johnson Insurance Agency for over 35 years. While at the Johnson Insurance Agency and Swedish American State Bank, Jackie was especially fond of her coworkers and customers and was known to take time to read children a book or two while their parents conducted business in the bank.&nbsp; It was also common to see those young customers’ “artwork” posted on the walls in her office.&nbsp;

 Jackie was a true people person with a sharp wit and generous character.&nbsp; The grandmother of nine, anything was “ok” at Grandma’s house.&nbsp; Her great-grandchildren were fortunate to have her as an active part of their young lives as well.&nbsp; Grandma and Grandad always had time for grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Jackie was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Dorothy Woolsey and Cheri Lilly, and parents-in-law.&nbsp; 

Survivors include Reginald “Reggie” O. Reed, rural Courtland; children Michael E. Reed (Susan Illig) of Las Vegas, Nevada, Melinda L. Reed-Hettick (Bob) of Stevensville, Montana and Mark E. Reed (Saundra) of Courtland, Kansas; grandchildren Dane Reed, Janine (Carl) Heincker, Matthew (Rebekah) Hettick, Katie (Bret) Reed-Carlgren, Davin Reed, Michael (Anne) Hettick, Andrew Hettick, Neely (Roger) Reed-Kohmetscher, Marisa Reed; 15 great-grandchildren, Bailee, Blair, Brandt, Reed, Bella, Ruca, Blaise, Blakely, Ansley, Eden, Bristol, Brene, Grace, Basil and Carson; special friends and caregivers Theresa Campbell, Tami Wiezorek, and Terry Tibbets.&nbsp;

Florence M. Steely, 95, of McPherson, Kansas passed away on March 28, 2022, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center.

She was born July 15, 1926, at the family home near White City, Kansas, the daughter of Fred A. and Orlena (Kohls) Herpich.&nbsp; Florence was a graduate of Woodbine High School, Woodbine, Kansas with the class of 1945.

Upon graduation, Florence went to work with Dr. Emig, an optometrist, as an optometrist assistant in Herington, Kansas.&nbsp; It was during her employment with Dr. Emig that this young handsome man came in for an appointment.&nbsp; Glenn B. Steely was that young man who became her life partner.&nbsp; Glenn and Florence were married on October 3, 1948, at St. Johns Lutheran Church, White City, Kansas.

Through the years of their married life, they lived in several states due to Glenn’s various business activities.&nbsp; Florence was never without a job very long, even with the various moves.&nbsp; She was very good at fitting and adjusting glasses and would work for numerous optometrists, finally retiring from this work at the age of 82.&nbsp; She and Glenn enjoyed extensive travel on their own, with bus trips, and the highlight being able to travel to Russia and Finland.

During her later years, she spent much time oil painting, being self-taught by Bob Ross books, especially in nursing homes with residents observing.

Survivors include her loving and devoted companion and best friend, JD the cat, one brother, Fred L. Herpich, one sister, Elvera Wehmeier, numerous nieces and nephews.&nbsp; 

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and one nephew.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, April 2, 2022, at Stockham Family Funeral Home with Pastor Jeremy Bower officiating.&nbsp; A visitation/viewing will be held from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Saturday morning.&nbsp; Burial will follow the service at McPherson Cemetery.

WICHITA, Kansas — A Derby school district committee decided 
not to remove the Bible from libraries or classrooms despite a challenge
 that the book contains mature themes.

Cheryl Bannon, a former 
member of the Derby City Council, asked the district’s library committee
 to review the Bible after the group decided to <a href="https://www.kmuw.org/2022-03-08/derby-district-removes-novel-from-class-materials-and-middle-school-library-after-anonymous-complaint" target="_blank">remove an award-winning young-adult novel</a> from its list of approved classroom materials.

Bannon
 said she filed her challenge to illustrate the consequences of 
censorship. The Bible is used as a textbook in Derby High School’s 
“Bible as Literature” course, a one-semester elective.

Pointing to
 verses about murder, masturbation, genocide, incest and other mature 
topics, Bannon argued that the religious text is just as provocative as 
some contemporary works.

Derby’s library committee removed Sherman Alexie’s <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/693208.The_Absolutely_True_Diary_of_a_Part_Time_Indian" target="_blank">“The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian”</a>
 from classrooms and middle-school libraries in February, citing 
profanity, sexual themes and slurs related to mental disabilities.

The 12-member <a href="https://www.derbyschools.com/news/what_s_new/library_committee" target="_blank">library committee</a>
 met for nearly two hours last week and opted not to remove the Biblical
 literature elective or its materials. Officials said various editions 
of the Bible also have been donated to school libraries and remain on 
shelves.

Ed Belsan, who teaches the Bible course and serves on the
 library committee, said the class focuses on the influence of the Bible
 as one of the foundational writings of Western literature. Similarly, 
students in other courses learn about Greek and Roman mythology.

“If
 nothing else, they get exposed to a great book that far too many people
 have very strong opinions about and have never read,” Belsan said. 
“That’s true of so many banned books.”

Belsan said his students 
are assigned to read only 149 of the Bible’s more than 1,100 chapters. 
The course includes some violent passages, such as the story of Cain and
 Abel. He said the majority of verses cited in Bannon’s challenge aren’t
 covered in the course.

“I don’t want to give the impression that there’s nothing controversial in there. That would be a misrepresentation,” he said.

“Even
 ‘Romeo and Juliet’ is controversial because of the suicide. But what I 
tell the kids on Day One is, ‘Don’t follow these guys. They’re a 
terrible example.’ The story is about families and conflict.”

Committee member Kristin Sen said removing the Alexie novel may have been a mistake because lots of books have mature content.

“It
 seems like one person initiated this whole process, and now here we 
are,” she said. “And … it’s a slidey slope. Where does it end?”

Sen,
 who also serves on the Derby Public Library’s board of trustees, said 
the committee should be consistent when reviewing books and should keep 
the whole district in mind.

“We’re kind of heavily leaning on the 
parent that’s objecting, but we’re not thinking about the group of 
parents that are saying, ‘No. … This is a good book and needs to be 
taught in a classroom setting,’” she said. “There are parents who want 
their child to go out in the world with this experience and this 
education.”

Holly Putnam-Jackson, assistant superintendent of 
curriculum, told the committee that the district’s legal team had 
cautioned against labeling books as explicit or asking parents to 
pre-approve them.

District policy allows parents to opt their 
child out of any book or lesson they find objectionable. In such cases, 
students are given an alternate assignment.

Bannon, who submitted the challenge, said she doesn’t plan to appeal the decision.

“I
 just wanted the parents and board members and faculty who make these 
decisions to see that mature themes run through lots of books, including
 the Bible,” she said.

Despite challenge, Kan. school district won't remove Bible from libraries, classrooms

On Monday, March 28 at about 7:30 p.m., Barton County Sheriff’s Office deputies conducted a traffic stop near the intersection of Lakin Avenue and Polk Street in the City of Great Bend.

The 2017 Ford Edge was stopped for a traffic violation. The driver was identified as James Perkins, age 65 of Larned.

During the course the investigation, a K9 unit was called from the Pawnee County Sheriff’s Office and alerted officers to a controlled substance in the vehicle. Methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia were discovered in the vehicle.

Perkins was arrested and transported to the Barton County Jail where he was booked on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia. He has since posted a $10,000 bond and was released.

Larned man arrested and released for meth crime

SURPRISE, Ariz.—Salvador Perez&nbsp;of the Kansas City Royals has won this year’s Lou Gehrig Memorial Award, sponsored by the Phi Delta Theta International Fraternity. 

Phi Delta Theta presents the award annually to a Major League Baseball player who best exemplifies the giving character of Hall of Famer&nbsp;Lou Gehrig, who was a member of the Fraternity’s Columbia University chapter. The award was first presented in 1955 and is permanently maintained at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, N.Y.

"Salvy is what all of us want baseball and baseball players to be," said&nbsp;Dayton Moore, Royals President of Baseball Operations. "We often say there isn't anyone who loves playing baseball more than him, and we're proud that this award recognizes that nobody enjoys helping people more, too."

Perez is the second member of the Royals to win the Lou Gehrig Memorial Award following&nbsp;George Brett&nbsp;in 1986. Perez will receive the award on Friday, June 3, prior to the Royals game against the Houston Astros.

Past recipients of the award include&nbsp;Stan Musial,&nbsp;Ernie Banks,&nbsp;Hank Aaron,&nbsp;Harmon Killebrew,&nbsp;Willie Stargell,&nbsp;Lou Brock,&nbsp;Ozzie Smith,&nbsp;Cal Ripken Jr.,&nbsp;Tony Gwynn,&nbsp;Albert Pujols,&nbsp;Derek Jeter&nbsp;and many more.

In the United States, Perez’s $1 million donation was a significant charter sponsor in developing the Kansas City MLB Urban Youth Academy, and he continues to make appearances at the facility to speak and work with underserved youth. The academy opened in 2018 and serves as the epicenter of youth baseball and softball throughout the Midwest, focusing on educating youth on what it means to be a Major League citizen and empowering them to be leaders in the community through character development and education. Salvador has worked tirelessly to help education efforts in Kansas City through Teach for America Kansas City so teachers can continue to further the education of their students. He held a teachers’ appreciation night where he sponsored a suite for local teachers, gave them each an autographed baseball, and donated $10,000 to Teach for America. A Garden City man was arrested early Tuesday morning in Salina after a search allegedly revealed him to be in possession of counterfeit money.

A Saline County Sheriff's deputy was driving in the 200 block of N. College Avenue in Salina at approximately 1 a.m. Tuesday when he noticed a 2004 Ford Expedition driving suspiciously and erratically, Saline County Undersheriff Brent Melander said this morning.

The deputy became more suspicious when he pulled the SUV over and began talking with the driver. Melander said the driver originally gave the deputy a false name and date of birth, however he was later identified as Sylvester Mitchell, Jr., 28, of Garden City.

Mitchell was taken into custody, and as he was being searched, the deputy allegedly located 10 counterfeit $100 bills in Mitchell's wallet.

Melander said Mitchell was booked into the Saline County Jail on the following requested charges

●Operating a motor vehicle without a license

●Parking/standing/stopping in a prohibited area

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on drug charges after a traffic stop.

Just after 4:30 a.m. Friday, a deputy with the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop on a 1997 Dodge Ram pickup truck near SW 10th Street and SW Cambridge Avenue, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

The driver, Colton B. Magnuson, 31, of Saint George, had a revoked driver’s license. During the investigation, deputies found heroin.

Magnuson was booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of&nbsp; possession of heroin, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving without a valid license.

Kansas deputy finds heroin during traffic stop

Additional charges have been requested for a Salina man who was arrested last week in connection to two other cases.

Brandon C. Loder, 36, of Salina, was arrested on March 21 on N. Hedville Road after a deputy had gone to check on a Toyota Camry along the roadway that had run out of gas. When the deputy ran the license plate, he discovered that it did not belong on the Camry, Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said Tuesday. 

Further investigation revealed that a man, later identified as Loder, had been in the convenience store at N. Hedville Road and Interstate 70 to borrow a gas can and get gas for a vehicle that had run out. Loder was later located on N. Hedville Road and taken into custody. When he was taken into custody, he allegedly was found to be in possession of a pipe with methamphetamine residue on it and some marijuana, Soldan said.

Loder also was sought by Salina police in connection to an alleged domestic incident on March 19 during which he allegedly battered a 29-year-old Salina woman and took her cellphone, Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus said Tuesday.

This morning, Hanus outlined the events that prompted the additional requested charges against Loder.

On March 20, an officer went back to talk with the 29-year-old Salina woman about the alleged domestic incident. During that conversation, the woman told the officer that Loder had called her and threatened her.

On the morning of March 21, officers were called to the Flying J Travel Center, 2250 N. Ohio Street, for the report of a man shoplifting. Officers were told that a man stole a $300 radar detector. Flying J personnel provided a description of the vehicle the man left in - a Toyota passenger car - and a description of the man, who police later determined was Loder.

Later on the morning of March 21, a Saline County Sheriff's deputy arrested Loder on N. Hedville Road, in connection to the Toyota Camry that had run out of gas. 

Hanus said that after the sheriff's office had contacted the register owner about the Camry, the owner, a 20-year-old Salina woman, called police to report that the car had been stolen overnight in the 1200 block of N. Eighth Street. The 2011 Toyota Camry was valued at $12,000.

Hanus said that after Loder was booked into jail on the morning of March 21, he allegedly once again called and threatened the 29-year-old Salina woman, this time from a phone in the jail.

Original charges requested for Loder include the following according to Hanus and Soldan.

●Interference with a law enforcement officer

Hanus said this morning that the following charges also have been requested for Loder.

●Two counts of aggravated intimidation of a witness/victim

A Salina man faces multiple requested charges, including aggravated domestic battery and robbery, after an alleged incident Saturday in the southwest part of the city.

The officers observed multiple injuries on the woman, Hanus said. The woman told police about a domestic incident involving a male acquaintance inside the residence. The officers then made contact with the man, identified as Matthew Levin, 32, of Salina.

After talking with Levin, officers arrested him and booked him into the Saline County Jail at 1 a.m. Sunday. Charges requested for Levin include the following, Hanus said.
