BARTON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas felon on new charges after an arrest.

Just after 6p.m. Wednesday, a police officer initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle in the 2400 block of Main Street in Great Bend for expired registration, according to a media release.

The officer contacted the driver of the vehicle, identified as Nathan Manley, age 47. During the officers investigation, it was determined Manley did not have a valid driver’s license, the vehicle did not have insurance and the registration expired two years prior.

K9 Menta did a free air sniff of the vehicle. Menta indicated to the odor of illegal narcotics coming from the vehicle. A search of the vehicle produced methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. Manley was placed under arrest and transported to the Barton County Jail where he was booked.&nbsp;Manley has previous convictions for theft, burglary and drugs, according to the Kansas Dept. of Corrections.

Twylah was born on February 17, 1938, in Goessel, KS to John and Susie (Buller) Schmidt. Twylah attended primary school at Summit School and then Burns High School in Burns, KS. She was active in high school as a baton twirler with the band, home economics, and she enjoyed cheerleading as well. Her junior year she felt honored to be named the football queen. 

Twylah married Don Nightengale on September 20, 1955, at the First Mennonite Church of Burns. In September of 2015, they celebrated their 60th&nbsp;wedding anniversary.

Twylah loved music, and could play the piano beautifully by ear.&nbsp; Twylah was a very hard worker and was always involved in the daily operations of the family farm she helped run with her husband. She also drove school bus for the Cedar Point school district and worked for Autumn Manor Health Care in Florence for 22 years where she served as the certified food service supervisor.&nbsp;&nbsp; 

When she wasn’t hard at work, Twylah could be found playing cards, attending her daughters’ sporting events, and collecting Indian pottery and her beloved brown tea pots. She also loved going with Don and their girls to see an occasional Royals game. When the girls were grown, Twylah could often be found at sporting events for her grandchildren. Twylah loved to sew and made seven wedding dresses, including one for each daughter, along with at least forty-plus dresses for the Florence Centennial. She also enjoyed trips to the Chicago area and Colorado Springs to see daughters Peggy and Carol.

Both church and family were extremely important to Twylah. At the age of 14 she was baptized into the Mennonite faith and accepted Jesus Christ into her heart. The love of Jesus and knowing him personally carried her through many turmoils during her lifetime. Twylah grew up with daily devotions read from the Bible by her father, and the whole family would gather to hear God’s word. Their family was tight knit, and all worked together on the family farm and taking care of each other. Twylah would carry on many of these traditions as she raised her three girls, whom she loved so deeply. 

The Schmidt/Nightengale family continues to hold their strong family connections with each other. Twylah left quite the legacy. 

Her family includes daughters Peggy (Doug) Leitzen, Marengo, Il, Janet (Bud) Turner, Eureka, KS, Carol Nightengale, Topeka, KS, grandchildren Jeremy (Abby) Leitzen, Amanda (Alex) Pointer, Rusty (Jacqueline) Turner, Adam Turner, Luke (Angela) Turner, 25 great-grandchildren, siblings Julie (Leland) Stucky, Emmy Midkiff, John (Carol) Schmidt, Fern (Ron) Goodwin, Berneda (Rex) Jewell, Calvin (Dawna) Schmidt, Dennis (Sherry) Schmidt, brother-in-law Jim Gehring, and many nieces and nephews.

At the age of 84, on Monday, April 18, 2022, Twylah passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family. Twylah is now in the presence of her Lord and Savior and reunited with her husband Don, parents John and Susie Schmidt, twin sister Beulah Gehring, brother-in-law Frank Midkiff, nephew John Schrock, and great-nephew Deacon Claassen.

 Family will greet friends on Friday, April 22, 2022, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Yazel – Megli Funeral Home, Marion, KS. Funeral service for Twylah will be held Saturday, April 23, 2022, 10:00 a.m. at Salem United Methodist Church, Newton, KS, burial will follow at Burns Cemetery, Burns, KS.

David was born on June 5, 1943, in Wichita, KS to his parents Richard and Ernestine (Kuhns) Smith. 

He graduated from Goddard High School in 1961 and went on to attend both Friends University and Kansas State University, eventually becoming the first class from Kansas State University to earn a degree in restaurant and institutional management. 

David was united in marriage to Effie Breeden on December 30, 1967, in Studley, KS. 

David managed the food service for hospitals in several states including Illinois, Iowa, and Colorado. Along the way, his career also included farming, truck driving, and even owning his own restaurant, “Dave’s Restaurant,”in Larned, KS.

When David wasn’t hard at work, he enjoyed fishing, woodworking, and singing. He was part of a barbershop quartet and sang with other students form Friends University while he was in college. David was also a strong member of the Strassburg Baptist Church family.

David is survived by his wife Effie Smith of Marion, KS, children Richard (Echo) Smith, Marion, KS, Kristen (Ron) Jackson, St. George, KS, and Amber (Aaron) Johnson, Dodge City, KS, grandchildren Brandon Smith, Charlotte Smith, Jeremy Smith, David Smith, Jacob Smith, De Smith, DJ Smith, Gabriel Johnson, Drew Johnson, and Luke Johnson, great-grandchild Mason Stith, brother Ronald (Betty) Smith, Monetta, VA, sister Diane Cummings, Oklahoma City, OK, and many nieces and nephews. 

David is preceded in death by his parents Richard and Ernestine Smith.

David, at the age of 78, passed away on Sunday, April 17, 2022, at his home in Marion, KS.

Family will greet friends on Wednesday, April 20, 2022, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Yazel – Megli Funeral Home, Marion, KS. A Celebration of Life for David will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 21, 2022, at Strassburg Baptist Church, Marion, KS.

Along the way, his career also included farming, truck driving, and even owning his own restaurant, “Dave’s Restaurant,”in Larned, KS.When David wasn’t hard at work, he enjoyed fishing, woodworking, and singing. He was part of a barbershop quartet and sang with other students form Friends University while he was in college. One year ago: Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was convicted of murder and manslaughter for pinning George Floyd to the pavement with a knee on the Black man's neck in a case that triggered worldwide protests and a reexamination of racism and policing in the U.S. (Chauvin would be sentenced to 22 1/2 years in prison.) President Joe Biden said the conviction of Derek Chauvin could be "a giant step forward" for the nation in the fight against systemic racism, but he declared that "it's not enough." A 16-year-old Black girl, Ma'khia Bryant, was shot and killed by a white police officer in Columbus, Ohio, as she swung a knife at a young woman. The military in the central African nation of Chad announced that President Idriss Deby Into, who had governed for more than three decades, had been mortally wounded during a visit to troops battling a rebel group north of the capital.

A local man was arrested on multiple requested charges after allegedly leading police on a chase through central and west-central Salina. That, in turn, led to the arrest of a second man who was wanted on multiple charges.

At approximately 12:23 a.m. Sunday, an officer observed a Ford Expedition driving southbound on S. Fourth Street near the intersection with E. Mulberry Street. The driver allegedly turned his head so as not to be identified by the officer, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. The officer also noticed that the back window of the SUV was broken out.

The officer began following the SUV. As they neared the intersection of S. Fourth Street and E. South Street, the officer observed that the temporary tag on the SUV seemed to be fabricated as the print on the tag was too small to read, Forrester said. The officer attempted to stop the SUV, but it took off.

Forrester said the pursuit went all over central and west-central Salina, sometimes at up to 60 mph.

At one point, the SUV was traveling eastbound through a utility access road between Kiowa Avenue and Cheyenne Avenue in west Salina. The SUV went through several fences and a clothesline and became disabled when it hit a tree in the backyard of 1426 Kiowa Avenue, Forrester said.

The driver of the SUV then fled on foot, leaving a 36-year-old woman passenger behind. Forrester said the woman told police that she had repeatedly asked the driver to stop and let her out, but he had refused.

A short time later, a panic alarm sent officers to a nearby residence in the 1300 block of Cheyenne Avenue. While they were talking with the female resident at the front door, the SUV driver, identified as Joshua Quested, 34, of Salina, fled out the rear of the residence, where officers were waiting to arrest him, Forrester said. When Quested was arrested, he allegedly was in possession of methamphetamine and marijuana.

Quested was arrested on the following requested charges, Forrester said.

While police were clearing the residence in the 1300 block of Cheyenne Avenue, they found Zachariah Humphreys, 35, of Salina, allegedly hiding in the residence. Forrester said Humphreys was wanted on multiple requested charges.

According to the Saline County Jail Booking Activity Report, Humphreys was booked into the jail early Sunday morning on the following requested charges.

●Interf w/LEO; obstr/resist/oppose misd warrant 

●Criminal trespass; Unknown circumstance

Salina man arrested after pursuit, leading to arrest of second man

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects for a home invasion burglary.

Just after 9:00 a.m. Sunday, police responded to report of a burglary in progress at a residence in the 1200 Block of SW Pembroke in Topeka, according to Police Sgt. Steven Block.

 The homeowner was reporting hearing noises in the home and believed an intruder was inside. Officers arrived and discovered the home had been broken into while occupied, and numerous items were stolen.

A neighborhood canvas led to a suspect vehicle being identified, and a stolen electronic item was able to be tracked by GPS to a residence in the 2300 Block of SE Bellview Avenue in Topeka. 

Officers conducted a knock and talk at this residence and were able to take two suspects into custody.

These suspects were brought to the Law Enforcement Center to speak with detectives about this case.

After a search warrant was completed at the address where the suspects were located, Lakendrick Hunter, 24, and Joseph Hines, 25 were booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of Aggravated Burglary, Felony Theft and Felony Criminal Damage.

2 suspects accused in Kansas home invasion burglary

To find a good brewery, does a person have to go to the big city? No. In fact, we’re going to visit the state’s smallest town with an active brewery.&nbsp;

Lucas Hass and Grant Wagner are the owners of Fly Boy Brewery &amp; Eats in Sylvan Grove. Both Lucas and Grant are originally from Bennington.&nbsp;

“I’ve always loved food and cooking, and also a good beer,” Lucas said. He worked at a steakhouse in Emporia before taking a job doing business analytics at a manufacturing company in Salina.&nbsp;

Grant became a chef at top-end restaurants in Kansas City before moving back to north central Kansas to be near family.&nbsp;

In 2014, Clay and Linda Haring bought a building in Sylvan Grove, remodeled it, and started a brewery and restaurant. Clay is an agricultural pilot and Linda is a teacher.&nbsp;&nbsp;Because Clay was a pilot, they decorated the establishment with an aviation theme and called it Fly Boy Brewery &amp; Eats, or Flyboys for short.&nbsp;

Grant Wagner helped them set up the kitchen. When Clay and Linda got so busy with their other work that they decided to sell the restaurant, Grant approached Lucas with the idea of buying it. Together they became the new owners of Fly Boy Brewery &amp; Eats.&nbsp;&nbsp;“This is a great restaurant and we didn’t want it to be lost,” Lucas said.&nbsp;

“We try to make all the main dishes from scratch,” Lucas said. The menu features steaks, burgers, sandwiches, seafood, chicken and salads. There’s the Landing Strip Burger, Plane Jane burger, Crop Duster, Hanger Over, and more. &nbsp;

“At heart, we’re a steakhouse,” Lucas said. “Our ribeye, KC strip, and chicken fried steak are really popular.”&nbsp;

“On the first weekend of every month, we have a prime rib special and this place is packed,” Lucas said. “We use certified Angus beef and get what beef we can locally.”&nbsp;

Lucas also enjoys the process of brewing beer. “I’m a big science buff, so I enjoy that part of it,” he said.&nbsp;

Flyboys has all the brewing equipment, including glycol-chilled fermenters. Lucas has developed some beers using his original recipes. “We’ve figured out to how get nice crisp clear flavors,” he said. &nbsp;

The drinks offered by Flyboys are called House Taps: Prop Washes. These include Flight of Beer, First Light, Aviator Ale, Tail Spin IPA, Round Engine Red, Barnstormer Brown, and more.&nbsp;

Yes, I do detect an aviation theme.&nbsp;

Other drinks include Sylvan Sunrise, Colorado Bulldog, Blue Elephant, Purple Wave and more.&nbsp;

One beer is a Prohibition lager, using ingredients that were popular around the time of Prohibition. It’s called Hell’s Broth. “A local historian told us that was what Carry Nation called these drinks,” Lucas said. “We keep two seasonal beers on rotating taps at all times, and we have seven flagship house beers.”&nbsp;

“We get lots of lake traffic and we get a lot of hunters during hunting season,” Lucas said. Although many restaurants experience a drop in business after the holidays, Flyboys has seen some increase during the 2022 off-season. They also managed through the COVID-19 pandemic.&nbsp;

“We were able to take over in some of the most tumultuous times in the restaurant business and make it through,” Lucas said. “It shows how great of a community and how great of a staff that we have. We’re just really appreciative of the community for coming out and supporting us.”&nbsp;

It’s remarkable to find this restaurant in a rural community such as Sylvan Grove, population 279 people. Now, that’s rural.&nbsp;

LAWRENCE –&nbsp;Before a capacity crowd on the floor of Allen Fieldhouse, the Kansas men’s basketball senior trio of Ochai Agbaji, David McCormack and Mitch Lightfoot were named co-recipients of the 2022 Danny Manning Mr. Jayhawk Award at its annual banquet Thursday. Players, coaches, staff, families and Williams Education Fund donors packed Allen Fieldhouse to honor the 2022 NCAA National Championship team. Displayed on the stage were the trophies the 2022 squad won during the season – the Big 12 regular-season, the Big 12 Tournament, the NCAA Midwest Region and the NCAA title. During the evening, head coach Bill Self was also presented the crystal NABC National Championship trophy for finishing No. 1 in the 2022 USA TODAY Coaches’ Poll. The evening emcee was Brian Hanni, radio voice of the Jayhawks. Following an invocation from KU All-America and associate athletics director Wayne Simien, the participants ate dinner while watching highlight videos of key moments in Kansas’ national championship run. Following the video Director of Athletics Travis Goff addressed the crowd, which was followed by the formal presentation of the NABC trophy. Self then introduced staff, players, by class, and coaches. KU’s six seniors said a brief word to the crowd and then Self handed out the Danny Manning Mr. Jayhawk trophies. “I don’t know about you guys but I haven’t come down yet and I don’t know that I want to,” Self told the crowd. “You work so hard for a common cause and you actually do it. You feel elation but you also feel overwhelmed and humbled. This team will go down as loved as any team in the 120-plus years of history at this school. The players that come here are caretakers in the period of time they are here, and what a great job this group has done as caretakers.” Kansas won its final 11 games of the season, posting a 34-6 overall record and tying Baylor for the Big 12 regular-season title with a 14-4 league mark. KU won its 12th Big 12 and 16th all-time conference tournament title and advanced to its NCAA-record 32nd consecutive NCAA Tournament, a streak that started in 1990. KU would then advance to its 32nd all-time Sweet 16 and its 16th Final Four. With its 72-69 win against fellow blueblood North Carolina in the championship game, KU secured its sixth all-time, fourth NCAA, national title, its first since 2008 and second under Self. The Final Four and Big 12 Tournament Most Outstanding Player, Agbaji was a 2022 Consensus All-America First Team honoree collecting All-America first-team nods from the NABC, Associated Press, The Sporting News and USBWA. Agbaji is Kansas’ 31st all-time Consensus All-America First Team selection, which is more than any other school. He is the first Jayhawk to earn the first-team honor since Devonte’ Graham in 2018. A finalist for most all 2022 national player of the year awards, Agbaji was named the unanimous 2022 Big 12 Player of the Year after leading the conference in scoring with an average of 18.8 points per game. The Kansas City, Mo., guard finished second in the league in three-point field goal percentage (40.9%, 23rd nationally) and second in three-point field goals made per game (2.6). A four-year starter for KU, Agbaji etched his name into the Kansas records book. He set the record for consecutive games of three-point field goals made at 53. Agbaji concludes his KU career ranked 15th on the KU career scoring list with 1,652 points, fourth on the three-point field goals made (250), fourth on three-point field goals attempted (670) and ninth in minutes played (3,978). Named the 2022 Big 12 Men’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year earlier this week, McCormack averaged 10.6 points and 7.0 rebounds his senior campaign. The Norfolk, Va., forward was named to the Final Four All-Tournament Team, where he averaged 20.0 points and 9.5 rebounds in KU’s two wins versus Villanova and North Carolina. In the title contest against UNC, McCormack posted his 11th double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds. A three-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team honoree, McCormack’s 11 double-doubles led the conference in 2021-22. His 7.0 rebounds ranked third in the Big 12 and he was eighth in free throw percentage at 75.6% and ninth in blocked shots per game (0.8). A 2022 All-Big 12 Third Team honoree, last season in 2020-21, McCormack led the Big 12 in field goal percentage at 51.5% and was the first recipient of the league’s Most Improved Player Award. McCormack concludes his career with 1,148 points, which ranks 46th&nbsp;on the KU career scoring list. Being a part of six seasons at Kansas, Lightfoot will go down as the winningest player in KU history as KU amassed 171 victories from 2016-17 through 2021-22. The Gilbert, Arizona, forward donned the KU uniform in 168 games which ranks fifth all-time in NCAA history. As a Jayhawk, Lightfoot won four Big 12 regular-season titles, two Big 12 Tournaments and advanced to six NCAA Tournaments, three Elite Eights and two Final Fours, garnering the 2022 National Championship. His 17 career games played in the NCAA Tournament are more than any other KU player. Lightfoot concludes his KU career No. 9 on the career blocked shots list at 156.&nbsp; &nbsp;

The Final Four and Big 12 Tournament Most Outstanding Player, Agbaji was a 2022 Consensus All-America First Team honoree collecting All-America first-team nods from the NABC, Associated Press, The Sporting News and USBWA. Agbaji is Kansas’ 31st all-time Consensus All-America First Team selection, which is more than any other school. He is the first Jayhawk to earn the first-team honor since Devonte’ Graham in 2018. A finalist for most all 2022 national player of the year awards, Agbaji was named the unanimous 2022 Big 12 Player of the Year after leading the conference in scoring with an average of 18.8 points per game. The Kansas City, Mo., guard finished second in the league in three-point field goal percentage (40.9%, 23rd nationally) and second in three-point field goals made per game (2.6). A four-year starter for KU, Agbaji etched his name into the Kansas records book. He set the record for consecutive games of three-point field goals made at 53. Agbaji concludes his KU career ranked 15th on the KU career scoring list with 1,652 points, fourth on the three-point field goals made (250), fourth on three-point field goals attempted (670) and ninth in minutes played (3,978). Named the 2022 Big 12 Men’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year earlier this week, McCormack averaged 10.6 points and 7.0 rebounds his senior campaign. The Norfolk, Va., forward was named to the Final Four All-Tournament Team, where he averaged 20.0 points and 9.5 rebounds in KU’s two wins versus Villanova and North Carolina. In the title contest against UNC, McCormack posted his 11th double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds. A three-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team honoree, McCormack’s 11 double-doubles led the conference in 2021-22. His 7.0 rebounds ranked third in the Big 12 and he was eighth in free throw percentage at 75.6% and ninth in blocked shots per game (0.8). A 2022 All-Big 12 Third Team honoree, last season in 2020-21, McCormack led the Big 12 in field goal percentage at 51.5% and was the first recipient of the league’s Most Improved Player Award. McCormack concludes his career with 1,148 points, which ranks 46th&nbsp;on the KU career scoring list. Being a part of six seasons at Kansas, Lightfoot will go down as the winningest player in KU history as KU amassed 171 victories from 2016-17 through 2021-22. The Gilbert, Arizona, forward donned the KU uniform in 168 games which ranks fifth all-time in NCAA history. As a Jayhawk, Lightfoot won four Big 12 regular-season titles, two Big 12 Tournaments and advanced to six NCAA Tournaments, three Elite Eights and two Final Fours, garnering the 2022 National Championship. His 17 career games played in the NCAA Tournament are more than any other KU player. Lightfoot concludes his KU career No. 9 on the career blocked shots list at 156.&nbsp; &nbsp;

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A Kansas murder suspect captured by the U.S. Border Patrol <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=158988">is in jail in</a> Kansas.

 </figure>SEDGWICK COUNTY —A Kansas murder suspect captured by the U.S. Border Patrol <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=158988">is in jail in</a> Kansas.On Thursday afternoon, police booked 32-year-old Patricio Gomez into the Sedgwick County Jail on <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=158988">requested charges</a> of first-degree murder, criminal possession of a firearm and a drug charges.On March 28, U.S. Border Patrol Agents&nbsp;in the El Paso&nbsp;Sector&nbsp;arrested Gomez who was wanted for&nbsp;murder in Wichita.The El Paso Station&nbsp;Border Patrol Agent encountered a Gomez walking along&nbsp;the south side of the Border Barrier&nbsp;near Fonseca Drive&nbsp;and Cesar E. Chavez/Border Highway, according to a media release from U.S. Customs and Border Protection.When agents questioned the Gomez as to his citizenship, he stated that he was a U.S.&nbsp;citizen and that he had&nbsp;just&nbsp;entered the United States&nbsp;from Mexico, illegally,&nbsp;by attempting to drive his truck across the Rio Grande.&nbsp;&nbsp;Gomez, was taken into custody, for the illegal entry,&nbsp;and transported to a Border Patrol station for further investigation.&nbsp;Record checks revealed that he had an extensive criminal history&nbsp;and an&nbsp;active&nbsp;warrant&nbsp;out of&nbsp;Wichita for&nbsp;murder.Gomez was&nbsp;remanded to the&nbsp;custody of the&nbsp;El Paso County Sheriff’s&nbsp;Office until his extradition to Wichita.&nbsp;&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>On October 1, Wichita police issued an alert in an attempt to locate Gomez.Just before 6:30p.m. Sept. 30, 2021. officers responded to a shooting call at a hotel in the 9400 block of East Corporate Hills.&nbsp; Upon arrival, officers located 42-year-old Michael Martinez who had been shot.&nbsp; He was pronounced deceased on the scene.The investigation revealed&nbsp;Patricio&nbsp;along with a woman arrived at the hotel regarding an illegal drug transaction.&nbsp; During the transaction, a disturbance ensued and&nbsp;Gomez&nbsp;fired multiple shots at Martinez, striking him.&nbsp;&nbsp;Gomez&nbsp;and the woman fled the scene in a black Cadillac Escalade.Police located the Cadillac outside of a hotel in Park City.&nbsp;
