Today in History - May 27

BARTON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on drug charges after a late night encounter.

Just before 11 p.m. Wednesday, police were dispatched to the 200 block of Chestnut Street in Great Bend after report of&nbsp; an unknown man with a flashlight, according to a media release.

At the home, police made contact with 42-year-old Eduardo Torres.

During the encounter, Torres removed his hands from his pockets dropping items to the floor. Officers located and secured a small bag containing a white powdery substance, a small bag containing a green leafy vegetation and a broken glass pipe.

Officers field tested both substances. Each bag tested positive for methamphetamine and marijuana.

Torres was arrested on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Torres was transported to the Barton County Jail where he was booked and held on a $10,000 bond.

What looked to be a silver splotch turned out to be gold for one Festival Medallion Quest participant.

Salina Arts &amp; Humanities announced during a news conference this afternoon that Samantha Uhler was the winner of the 2022 Festival Medallion Quest. Uhler found the medallion shortly after the Thursday morning clue was announced, said Brad Anderson, executive director of Salina Arts &amp; Humanities.

The first clue was given on the afternoon of May 18. Subsequent clues were announced at 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. each day. 

Uhler said she found the medallion under a yucca plant located in a brick-paved area at the southeast edge of the N. Ohio Street overpass. Uhler had an idea that the medallion was somewhere in that area, so she positioned herself there and awaited this morning's clue. 

Once she had the clue, she knew where to look: the bricks she had stared at for days.

"I knew everyone had already picked up every brick there was," Uhler said. "I wasn't too hopeful that I would find it, you know, just 'cause we haven't in the past. Usually, it's always right there and then somebody else finds it, but apparently it was my lucky day."

Uhler's boyfriend, Isaac Beckman, was a partner in the search, as well as her mother, Missy Slagle, with whom she was talking on FaceTime when she found the medallion.

The metal medallion, which was shaped like a splotch of paint, was silver on one side and multi-colored with instructions on the other and approximately two inches wide. When Uhler found it, the silver side was up, she said.

"I thought it was a piece of trash because we saw so many pieces of trash out today and the last couple of days. I wasn't sure what it was, but I was like 'oh, I can't just let that go right in front of me,' so I went ahead and picked it up and it was not a piece of trash," Uhler said and laughed.

That medallion, however, was not the original 2022 medallion. According to information from Salina Arts &amp; Humanities, Anderson discovered that the original medallion "had been lost in the environment, likely because of the rain. It was promptly replaced with the medallion that Uhler found, but this time it was left without disguise of organic matter."

Uhler receives a prize package of $1,000 in cash and $2,000 in gift certificates to be used for shopping at the River Festival 2022 Fine Art and Craft Show. Other prizes include four festival admission wristbands, a complimentary on-grounds VIP parking pass, an invitation for four to the Thursday-evening PREMIERE Art Patron party, and four river festival 2022 t-shirts.

Uhler, who is a senior at Bethany College studying business administration, said she plans to use some of the cash to purchase books for her summer school classes.

The Festival Medallion Quest serves as a countdown to the Smoky Hill River Festival. This year's festival is scheduled for June 9-12 in Salina's Oakdale Park.

Festival medallion found after nine days of clues

BARTON COUNTY&nbsp;–&nbsp;Today, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) arrested a former police officer from the Ellinwood Police Department, according to a media release from the agency.

Just after 8 a.m., KBI agents arrested 40-year-old Christopher W. Rowland of Great Bend, at 1025 Main St. in Great Bend. 

He was arrested on requested charges of theft, possession of marijuana, official misconduct, interference with a law enforcement officer, and interference with the judicial process.

Rowland was employed as an officer with the Ellinwood Police Department until November of 2021. On December 14, 2021, the Ellinwood Police Department requested the KBI investigate missing money and drugs discovered during an audit of their evidence locker. The police department cooperated fully with the investigation.

Following his arrest, Rowland was transported to the Barton County Jail for booking.

Summer at the Library is here and recently Salina Public Library made a decision that will benefit the community’s youngest members. 

At its April Board of Directors meeting, SPL announced that all youth patrons (18 and younger) will have fees/fines forgiven up to $75. This includes more than 1,200 youth patrons. The move is designed to allow students to use the resources provided by the library so they can keep their learning interest and momentum up during the summer months.

“The summer months can be a difficult time for students in terms of learning and reading regression with school not in session,” Melanie Hedgespeth, Director, said. “This move gives those students more freedom and ease to use the library to help stay engaged and avoid that summer slide.”

Summer at the Library is the busiest time of the year for SPL. For the first time since the pandemic, there is a full slate of classes and programs for both youth and adult patrons. Community members can also take part in the Summer Reading program, which runs from May 20 through July 21. All it requires is reading or listening to a book(s) of their choice, fill out a book log form at the library or online and patrons are eligible to win weekly prizes. Salina Public Library to forgive youth patron fees, fines up to $75

AAA is projecting that almost 329,000 Kansans will travel a distance of 50 miles or more over the Memorial Day weekend and, as usual, the large majority will be driving to their destinations, though air travel and travel by other modes of transportation are both up significantly compared to last year.

Ninety percent of travelers - or more than 296,000 Kansas - will be hitting the roads and highways for the holiday, up more than 4% compared to last year despite record gas prices.

“The roads will be as crowded as they have been over the Memorial Day holiday since before the pandemic,” said Shawn Steward, AAA Kansas spokesman. “With so many people driving, our AAA Emergency Roadside Service team is preparing for a very busy, all-hands-on deck weekend to assist those who may have car troubles. We recommend that holiday road-trippers plan ahead to make sure their vehicle is road-ready before they leave, and take proper safety precautions while on the road.”

AAA projects that the heaviest traffic will take place in larger metro areas and in most places during the following times:

●Thursday/Friday afternoon and evening, as holiday traffic mixes with regular rush hour commuters. 

●Monday afternoon and evening when many vacationers return home

No Holiday for AAA Emergency Roadside Service With a holiday weekend full of busy highways, AAA Emergency Roadside Service (ERS) crews expect to respond to more than 388,000 calls for help nationwide and 1,200 members across Kansas left stranded by dead batteries, tire troubles, other engine breakdowns, lockouts -- and even drivers who have run out of gas.&nbsp;

“AAA is known for our emergency roadside service,” said Jon Burgett, ERS fleet operations manager for AAA Kansas. “We pride ourselves in providing great service and keeping drivers and families safe. We look forward to getting our members back on the roads as quickly and safely as possible for the Memorial Day weekend and throughout the busy summer.”

In order to avoid both the inconvenience and the expense of a breakdown, AAA is encouraging all motorists to make sure their vehicles are road-ready before heading out. Safety while on the road Whether preparing for a trip this Memorial Day weekend or getting ready for a Great American Road Trip this summer, AAA reminds drivers to make sure their cell phones are fully charged and that they have a fully stocked summer emergency kit on hand.

●Fully charged cell phone and car charger. 

●Flashlight with extra fresh batteries. 

●Rags, paper towels or pre-moistened wipes. 

●Emergency warning devices such as road flares or reflectors. 

●Drinking water/snacks for everyone in the car including pets.

AAA members are also encouraged to download the AAA app for Emergency Roadside Service or program the AAA Help line and their membership number into their phones.

As the AAA Emergency Roadside Service crews prepare to take care of motorists on the roads, they ask that drivers look out for AAA technicians and other emergency first responders who work along the highways and obey the “Move Over” laws that exist in Kansas and all other states.&nbsp;

AAA: Nearly 329,000 Kansans expected to travel Memorial Day weekend

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — The Missouri Legislative session has ended without a sports betting bill being passed.

The
 Missouri House approved sports betting legislation in March for anyone 
21 and older to place wagers on college and professional sports teams. 
But in the Senate, members couldn't find a path forward, and it had to 
do with regulating slot machines.

State Senator Tony Luetkemeyer 
of Parkville co-sponsored sports betting legislation with senator Dan 
Hegeman of Cosby. Luetkemeyer says sports betting not passing was 
perhaps the biggest letdown of the session.

"I really wish we'd 
have gotten a sports book betting bill done," Luetkemeyer told St. 
Joseph Post. "That's a piece of legislation I've sponsored for the last 
four years I've been in the Senate. Primarily, because we know people 
are betting illegally in gray markets right now and we don't know if the
 data is reliable, whether people are getting ripped off."

A big 
point of contention is video lottery games like slot machines, which are
 unregulated and illegal in many cases. An amendment was added to 
Missouri's sports betting bill that would do away with all slot 
machines, leading to a lengthy filibuster.

Meanwhile, the state of
 Kansas just passed sports betting into law, with governor Laura Kelly 
signing that bill earlier this month.

"Kansas just passed sports 
betting this year," Luetkemeyer pointed out. "So, I think we're going to
 see a lot of tax dollars flowing out of the state of Missouri and being
 spent in Kansas, which is unfortunate, because all gaming revenues in 
Missouri have to go toward K-12 education."

If sports betting ever
 did pass in Missouri, it would bring in an estimated $10 million 
annually, with most of that going toward education.

Hegeman says it's frustrating, because sports betting has stalled in Missouri in previous years over the same issue.

"That
 continues to get hung up by the video lottery terminals," he said, "and
 wanting to tie the two issues together. At the last, we were trying to 
separate those and find a path forward, but we just didn't seem to be 
able to find that."

Sports betting is now legal to some degree in 
all of Missouri’s bordering states. Luetkemeyer believes this may add 
some needed pressure.

"I do think next year, there will be some 
increased pressure to pass sports betting because of the fact it passed 
in Kansas," Luetkemeyer said, "and the different consequences that could
 have. In terms of the Chiefs, in terms of tax revenue on the western 
side of the state. I do not believe the Chiefs are going to leave and go
 to Kansas - based on conversations I've had with folks within the 
organization."

The Supreme Court struck down a federal law in 2018
 against sports betting. Since then, more than 30 states have legalized 
it, including Illinois, Iowa and Kansas.

Kansas' bill says 80 
percent of the revenues generated from sports betting would go into a 
fund to provide incentives for professional teams to come to Kansas.

While
 he does not believe the Chiefs would ever leave Missouri, Luetkemeyer 
expresses some optimism that next year could be the year Missouri 
finally legalizes sports betting.

"What you're going to see a lot 
of people in St. Joe and Kansas City that will drive across the river, 
go into Kansas and place a bet during March Madness or for the Super 
Bowl and then drive back to Missouri," he said. "That means that tax 
revenue is leaving our state and going to Kansas, which is unfortunate."

Sports betting bill fails in Missouri legislature

FINNEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating an injury accident that occurred just after 1:30a.m. Monday in the 900 block of Jenny Avenue in Garden City.

Officers observed a Honda CR-V driven by 23-year-old Alex Ortiz had struck the west side of a residence. 

First responders found Ortiz sitting in the vehicle. EMS transported him to St. Catherine Hospital for treatment of injuries. The vehicle was removed from inside the residence and towed from the scene. The homeowner was inside the residence at the time of the accident but was not injured.

Through further investigation, it was determined that Ortiz was suspected of driving under the influence. After he was released from the hospital, police arrested Ortiz and booked him into the Finney County Jail on requested charges of DUI, Transportation of an Open Container, Possession of Marijuana and Tampering with Ignition Interlock.

The west side of the residence was assessed for damage and deemed unlivable, with total estimated damage at $30,000.00.

Kan. man jailed for alleged DUI crash into home

DICKINSON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a burglary and made an arrest.

Just before 10 p.m. Thursday, sheriff's deputies responded to Lion’s Den, located at 2349 Fair Road in Dickinson County, for a commercial business alarm, according to a social media report.

 Deputies discovered a man had entered the occupied business and removed without permission property valued at more than $2,000. 

 After seeking assistance from the public through a Facebook post to help identify the suspect, deputies were led to Washington, Kan.,&nbsp; where the Washington County Sheriff’s Office located and detained 43-year-old Kenneth L. Riddle of Washington, Kan., and a vehicle. 

Dickinson County deputies took Riddle into custody and booked him on requested charges of aggravated burglary and felony theft. 

On Monday, with assistance from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at 300 West First Street in Washington, Kan., and recovered the stolen property.

What exactly is a personal brand? I’m glad you asked.

Simply put, your personal brand is how&nbsp;others perceive you. It’s an outside snapshot of what you value on the inside. A personal brand isn’t a mask you wear around others, and it’s not something that’s created overnight. It takes consistency and time to make an image stick at work&nbsp;and&nbsp;in the world. And to create a winning personal brand, you must understand your values and how people see you&nbsp;right now.

The first step to creating your personal brand is to take inventory of what is, and what isn’t, working for you. Ask yourself:

●How do people experience me?&nbsp;How would people describe your personality and behavior on a normal day?

●What traits do I need to keep and elevate?&nbsp;List out your strongest positive traits, ones that would make a big impact on your life with just a little more&nbsp;oomph. Maybe you love to teach, are a great communicator, or are the most reliable person you know.

●What behaviors do I need to get rid of?&nbsp;Maybe you’re always skidding into the office five minutes late, or have a hard time accepting compliments. Making simple tweaks can really improve your personal brand.

Now, it’s time to dig a bit deeper. Think about how you’re built, and what matters most to you:

●How has God wired me?&nbsp;Some people are built to create, others thrive doing tough physical work, and some find fulfillment as a coach or humanitarian. Jot down those activities that&nbsp;make you come alive.

●What do I want to be known for?&nbsp;This question isn’t meant to create a lofty and impossible goal. It’s supposed to reveal the core of who you really are. If you love business, maybe you want to be known as an incredible team builder.

●How do I want to be perceived, and what actions should I take to create that perception?&nbsp;If&nbsp;leadership matters most&nbsp;to you, you might want to be perceived as a team player. To be perceived as a team player, you need to take actions that support and serve your team.

●How do I express myself in other ways?&nbsp;The way you dress, walk and talk are all ways you express your values. Do you smile? Do your clothes fit well and represent your industry? Do you speak with confidence and kindness? These are all cues helping—or hurting—your personal brand.

Invite your leader, peers and anyone else who knows you well to speak into your current personal brand. You’re going to have blind spots pointed out, but this is good. You’re also going to learn what people appreciate about you. The point here is to get an idea of how people&nbsp;experience&nbsp;you.

Once that’s done, it’s time to create a new vision for your winning personal brand. Ask yourself:

●What are my beliefs? What do I stand for?

●What are the results I want to produce?

●What does my personality bring out in my relationships and work?

These questions go one layer deeper to help you discover what really motivates you and what you want to express to the world.

All this work to create a personal brand won’t matter if you don’t share it with the world. Here’s how to communicate what you’ve learned about your values, beliefs, strengths and character with the people around you:

Be yourself&nbsp;-&nbsp;If you try to be a knock-off of someone else, you rob the world of your&nbsp;unique talents, mission and purpose.

Take action&nbsp;-&nbsp;Put your values into practice. Start taking steps that line up with who you want to be. Come to work a few minutes earlier, and don’t complain about it. Compliment your team on their drive and enthusiasm.

Show (and tell) your brand&nbsp;-&nbsp;Don’t be obnoxious, but you want people to know what you’re all about. Naturally introduce those facts about yourself, your values and your skills in conversations over time. Live them out. Walk your talk.

Keep maintaining and growing your brand&nbsp;-&nbsp;Do as much as you can to live and work in excellence. Continue learning through books, classes and podcasts. Invest in your relationships with peers&nbsp;and mentors, and&nbsp;take care of your health.

Developing your character and personal brand is a lifelong journey. And this is just the beginning!
