WICHITA – A federal grand jury in Wichita returned an indictment last week charging a Kansas man with one count of bank robbery.

According to court documents, on June 2, Roland K. Vandenberg, 55, allegedly robbed Emprise Bank in the 4800 Block of South Broadway Street in Wichita.

Officers learned that a suspect had entered the bank, demanded money, then left the bank northbound on Broadway.

Officers located a man matching the suspect description in the area. He was identified as Vandenberg.&nbsp; Police&nbsp;<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=20073955">booked him into&nbsp;</a>the Sedgwick County Jail on a requested charge of robbery. He is no longer in custody, according to online jail records.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is investigating the case.

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a fatal shooting and have a suspect in custody.

Just after 3a.m. Saturday, police were dispatched to the 700 block of SE Branner Street in Topeka in reference to a shooting, according to Police&nbsp; Lt. Ronnie Connell.

Officers found one victim identified as Alfredo Campa-Vasquez, 28, of Topeka. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

As a result of the investigation police arrested 30-year-old Nancy Cervantes of Topeka and booked her on a requested charge of Reckless 2nd Degree Murder.

TOPEKA — Caught in a political 
crossfire and exhausted from the pandemic, Kansas teachers are putting 
down their books and leaving the profession.

In a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nea.org/about-nea/media-center/press-releases/nea-survey-massive-staff-shortages-schools-leading-educator">survey from the National Education Association</a>,
 55% of teachers indicated they were ready to leave the classroom. As of
 April 12, there were 1,381 teacher vacancies in Kansas, according to 
the Kansas State Board of Education, and this number is expected to 
rise.

A teacher of 27 years, Jeff Plinsky, 
has seen the steady decline of those entering the field. While there 
have been a multitude of reasons for this, Plinsky said, it started when
 former Gov. Sam Brownback’s administration focused on an efficiency 
model to cut public school spending while increasing teacher workloads.

“The best way to describe it is sort 
of the death by 1,000 cuts,” said Plinsky, outgoing vice president of 
the Lawrence Education Association and a teacher at Lawrence High 
School. “There are a multitude of things that have hit teachers really 
over the last decade and perhaps even longer.”

These issues became exacerbated after
 March 2020, when teachers had to adapt to virtual learning. Many 
teachers, though, weren’t extensively taught how to virtually teach, and
 they weren’t ready for the emotional toll of not being able to see 
their students.

“It was really hard because we 
couldn’t get a hold of some of those kids,” said Jessica Popescu, who 
left the teaching profession in May after nine years. “So you just kind 
of had to watch them sink and somehow get over it. That’s hard, 
especially if you care about your students.”

A 2013 graduate of Kansas State 
University, Popescu was recently hired as a student recruitment 
coordinator at the Research College of Nursing in Kansas City, Missouri.

“I got really tired of doing a lot of
 things that, one, I didn’t believe in,” Popescu said. “Or, two, that 
are just done to kind of check the box. As teachers, we’re always asking
 for more money, but then it felt like a lot of what we do isn’t taken 
seriously. I wanted to be taken seriously as an educator. I wanted to be
 seen as a professional.”

With just six years left before retirement, Plinsky said if he could retire tomorrow, he would.

“(I’d be just as happy at) some 
minimum wage job,” Plinsky said. “People don’t yell at you there about 
what a terrible human I am and what awful things I’m trying to do to 
their children while my colleagues are sheltering children’s bodies from
 flying bullets that no one seems to be able to stop.”

Janet Waugh, who represents northeast
 Kansas in the 1st District on the Kansas State Board of Education, said
 things did not get better for teachers once students were back in the 
classroom. Not only did they have to catch students up on their studies,
 teachers had other factors to deal with.

“Misinformation is one of the biggest
 and most dangerous things that we have that people are upset about,” 
Waugh said. “It’s sort of like (critical race theory), which is not in 
our standards. To my knowledge, there’s not a district teacher teaching 
it.”

“Parents were upset. The Legislature 
was upset,” Waugh added. “So many people were criticizing the teachers, 
that the teachers — first of all, they’re totally exhausted. They’re 
drained. The second thing is the way they’re treated. It’s just sad.”

Still, for many teachers, the joy in their job lies with their students, Waugh said.

“I believe teachers see this as a 
calling,” Waugh said. “They don’t see this as a job. They can make more 
money (elsewhere). … They love kids. They love to teach.”

Plinsky said new teachers need to be prepared for the political currents that come at them.

“(New teachers) need to make sure 
that they have a financial and psychological support network around 
them,” Plinsky said. “The blow, after body blow, after body blow that 
they take in education — if they don’t have that kind of support, they 
won’t survive.”

Joan Brewer, dean of the Teachers College at Emporia State University, said giving the power back to teachers is crucial.

“Listening to teachers, instead of 
just telling them, ‘This is what you have to do or what you need to 
do,’ ” Brewer said. “I think a big key with the Legislature is just 
really investing in teachers and letting them, in many ways, lead the 
way.”

To improve the system though, some believe it must first collapse before significant changes can be made.

“I don’t think we’ve hit the peak 
yet,” Popescu said. “I think you’re seeing it get worse and worse and 
worse. And I don’t know what’s going to tip it over the edge, but we 
haven’t hit that yet.”

Echoing Popescu’s sentiment, Plinsky 
said that though there are people doing their best, he has no confidence
 that those in power in Kansas are interested in preserving quality 
education.

“Maybe,” Plinsky said, “the whole 
thing has to collapse in a heap of ruins before the folks in power 
decide maybe they ought to fix it.”

‘Death by 1,000 cuts’: Kan. teachers increasingly demoralized

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a burglary and have two suspects in custody.

During the nighttime hours of Thursday, multiple thefts from motor vehicles and a theft of a motor vehicle occurred at residences in the 6000 block of SW Pointe Drive in Shawnee County, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

The suspects took thousands of dollars’ worth of items including a 2014 Lincoln MKX SUV, cash, personal items and financial cards.

During the investigation, photos and videos were obtained from the neighborhood and local businesses where stolen financial cards were used.&nbsp; Officials positively identified two individuals. 

On Tuesday, police arrested 25-year-old Aaron M. Griffith of Topeka in the 2400 block of SW Hillcrest Road. Griffith was booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of conspiracy, identity theft, burglary to a vehicle, theft, criminal damage and criminal use of a financial charge.&nbsp;

Later that day, deputies arrested 27-year-old Halie N. Clinton of Topeka&nbsp; near SW 61st Street and SW Urish Road during a hit and run accident investigation.

Clinton had a warrant for her arrest. Clinton was later booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of conspiracy to commit burglary.

Sheriff: Kan. burglary suspects took cash, financial cards and SUV

GEARY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating over a dozens suspects on drug allegations after a special enforcement operation conducted by the Geary County Sheriff’s Office with assistance from the Drug Enforcement Agency and the Geary County Attorney’s Office, according to a media release.

During the 16 hour operation on Thursday and Friday night, authorities made 17 arrests.

 The operation totaled 11 drug cases, 9 of which were for methamphetamine, fentanyl and/or “Dirty 30” pills (fentanyl-laced opioid pills). The operation recovered a stolen firearm; had a Driving Under the Influence arrest and cleared 6 active arrest warrants, according to the release.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — One of the many cast members to grace 2022 Smallville Con this weekend at the Kansas State Fairgrounds is Jack O' Halloran. He played Non, the menacing but mute member of the trio of Kryptonian supervillains in the first two Superman movies.

"It's like an immortal deal," O'Halloran said. "I knew that, when we did the film, that it was going to be there forever."

O'Halloran spoke glowingly of the brilliance of director Richard Donner. He believes the so-called Donner Cut of Superman II is more true to the intent of the story.

"Richard Donner is a tremendous director," O'Halloran said. "He had already shot 86% of Superman II. When they brought on Richard Lester, in order for him to be a named director on the film, he had to have shot better than 50% of the film, so he went back and reshot stuff and added a lot more comedy and stuff than Donner did. The Donner Cut is actually a much better version of Superman II."

One of the differences in the older Superman movies from current comic book fare is that it isn't nearly as dark.

"There was enough action in the film to make the story work extremely well," O'Halloran said. "You didn't need to go overboard. Today, the films get darker and darker and darker. Hopefully, that changes in the future."

Smallville Con brings movie actors to Hutchinson

Steven J. Thomas, age 53,&nbsp;of Hays, Kansas, died&nbsp;Friday, May 27, 2022, in Barstow, California. &nbsp;

He&nbsp;was born&nbsp;November 9, 1968, in Hays, Kansas, to John Harland and Patricia Ann &nbsp;(Leikam) Thomas.&nbsp;&nbsp;He married Carrie Christine (Silva) on February 14, 2009 at Las Vegas, Nevada.&nbsp;

He was a truck driver for over 30 years working for L-K Wireline and Acid in Hays, UPS Freight of Salina, and recently a driver for The Fleener Brothers Trucking&nbsp;of Carthage, Missouri.&nbsp;&nbsp;He grew up in Hays and was a 1988 graduate of Hays High School. &nbsp;He&nbsp;had a love for fast cars, loud music, fishing with his grandchildren, target shooting with his children, and time with his family. &nbsp;He was a great friend, a loving husband,&nbsp;an amazing father, and a proud Papa, wonderful&nbsp;brother, and a funny uncle.&nbsp;&nbsp;

KANSAS CITY (AP) — Abortion providers in some places where the procedure could be banned if the U.S. Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade are bracing for a ruling by halting scheduling for the procedure, transitioning staff to help patients travel to other states and creating networks of clinics that will span across regions of the country.

Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin, which operates three clinics that provide abortions in the state, is not scheduling the procedure beyond June 25 as it anticipates&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/abortion-health-religion-government-and-politics-e75b43ad1dd5608fbd7a186b3afe59a6">a late June decision reversing the landmark 1973 decision that guaranteed abortion rights nationwide.</a>&nbsp;The organization in recent weeks has dedicated two staff members to help patients book appointments and figure out how to get to clinics.

Whether clinics in Wisconsin will be able to provide abortions, though, has turned into a day-to-day question.

“One of the hardest aspects of this is not knowing what day this decision will come down and what it will be,” said Michelle Velasquez, the director of legal advocacy and services at Planned Parenthood Wisconsin. “The unknown has been difficult.”

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/abortion-us-supreme-court-travel-health-b0561979f5b28c7aebc164c1e159ba0a">It’s a window into what abortion providers and access funds are planning</a>&nbsp;in more than a dozen other states across the South and Midwest. In South Dakota this week, the state’s only abortion clinic, also operated by Planned Parenthood, announced it had “paused” scheduling abortions beyond the end of the month. In Oklahoma, providers already stopped the procedure&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/abortion-us-supreme-court-politics-texas-legislature-a43f7f21c1b8e07a383b120d1bdbc695">after a law was enacted to ban it.</a>

In Wisconsin, a law banning abortion has been on the books since 1849, but Roe v. Wade overrode it. While Roe’s fall would likely&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/abortion-us-supreme-court-health-wisconsin-madison-6109f177299eb861d8fa7a2e888e086a">spark a legal tussle</a>&nbsp;over whether it is valid, Planned Parenthood does not want to put its staff at risk of prosecution.

Velasquez said clinic staff wanted to provide abortions in Wisconsin up until the last minute it was legal, but also had to consider that scheduling appointments for dates when it could become illegal could create uncertainty and be “distressing” for patients.

Velasquez acknowledged that the Supreme Court could release its decision as soon as next week, even while Planned Parenthood has appointments on the books. She said if that happened, Planned Parenthood would help those patients book appointments for abortions in nearby states, such as Minnesota and Illinois. Patients could still get counseling, lab work and ultrasounds in Wisconsin in the meantime.

“We wouldn’t leave patients, like, ‘You’re on your own,’” Velasquez said.

“Even if we can’t provide the medications or we can’t do a procedure, we are absolutely able to help people find the care they need,” she added.

The strategy will inevitably put more pressure on providers in states in the region where abortion will still be legal, said Caitlyn Myers, an economic professor at Middlebury College who studies abortion access.

“As hundreds of thousands of women flood out of these states, it is going to enormously tax the resources of these providers,” she said. “I don’t think they are prepared for this huge influx.”

It comes as&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/abortion-covid-us-supreme-court-science-health-6a72fba07ebe4f8ba7cfb0ba66e3c592">the number and rates of U.S. abortions is on the rise after a long decline.</a>&nbsp;Abortions increased from 2017 to 2020, according to figures from the Guttmacher Institute, a research group that supports abortion rights. It counted more than 930,000 abortions in the U.S. in 2020.

Clinics shuttering, like one did in Idaho recently, or halting scheduling show that a post-Roe reality has already arrived in many places. Myers said getting an appointment for an abortion may soon become “critical” across the country.

He attended Clearwater Schools until his senior year when he attended Norwich High School to play basketball. He graduated in 2007 from Norwich High School. Jordan’s dream from the time he was young was to go to Kansas University; he attended for one year and his love for KU remained his lifetime passion. In 2009 he went to San Diego, CA with Campus Crusade for Christ. They were required to obtain employment and he ended up working at Two Brothers Restaurant. When everyone else returned to Kansas, Jordan stayed and continued working. During this time, he met Matt Whipple. Jordan traveled from coast to coast following Chef Whipple to pursue his love of cooking, from a catering company to cooking at a backyard BBQ at the home of Phillip Rivers (probably the highlight of his career). He loved being in a kitchen. He always represented Kansas wherever he went and was often called “Kansas.“ Jordan’s favorite pastime was sitting in his chair next to his dad and kitty cats, Prince and Ari, watching sports. He was an avid Kobe Bryant, Steph Curry, and Chargers fan, and most importantly a KU Jayhawks Superfan. He always enjoyed talking sports with his Grandma Phyllis Epp, who could usually match his sports knowledge. Above all, he loved his “baby sister” Carby. They talked every evening and had what they both called “brother-sister” talks which were deemed confidential (and may have been talks about their parents!) There were certain movies they could only watch together, A Goofy Movie, and Night At The Roxbury. One day while eating and playing at Burger King, they received a stuffed animal they immediately called “Arthur.” Whoever was having a tough time would get to be in possession of Arthur. During high school years he mostly stayed with Carmen. When Jordan went to San Diego, Carmen was sure to give Arthur to Jordan to take with him. Arthur was even mailed back and forth at times for whoever needed him. What is amazing, Jordan lost many things, his drivers license, SS card (both multiple times), books, clothes, but he never lost Arthur. Needless to say Arthur will now stay with Carmen to get her through the hard times knowing her big brother will always be with her. Jordan never ended a phone call without saying “I Love You.” He never let anyone leave without a big teddy bear hug. We are all going to miss Jordan and his hugs. Jordan went to be with his Lord and Savior on June 13, 2022, at the age of 33. We know we will see him again soon in a better place.

MANHATTAN — Summer travel season is in full swing. A Kansas State University veterinarian says there are many factors to consider when deciding to travel with your pets. "Make sure that the trip you have planned is suitable for your pet," said&nbsp;<a href="https://www.vet.k-state.edu/academics/clinical-sciences/faculty-staff/faculty/nelson/" target="_blank">Susan Nelson</a>, clinical professor of clinical sciences at the university's&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ksvhc.org/" target="_blank">Veterinary Health Center</a>. "Many pets experience anxiety when traveling in vehicles or suffer from motion sickness, so it may not be a good idea to take them with you. If you have no option but to take them, you can talk to your veterinarian about medications to help ease their anxiety or nausea." Nelson recommends having all pets restrained in some way when traveling with them in a vehicle. Cats and small dogs tend to travel best in secured crates, while specialized harnesses for larger dogs help keep them fastened in the vehicle. Allowing pets to remain loose in vehicles can be extremely dangerous because the animal can get between the driver's feet and the pedals. If a window is open, they may jump out and become injured or killed. "Having your dog ride unrestrained in the back of a pickup is also dangerous due to the risk of jumping or falling out, and it is illegal in some states," said Nelson. Additionally, since heat stress and heat exhaustion are a common concern during the summer, Nelson said it's crucial to not leave pets unattended in the car, even with the windows cracked open, as temperatures can soar to dangerous levels in a matter of minutes. For road trips Nelson suggests stopping every two to three hours to allow your dog time for exercise and to relieve itself. Unless leash trained, leave cats in their crates. "You can bring along a litter box and let the cat use it inside the car during extended trips," said Nelson. "Line the crate with plenty of absorbent material, such as newspaper, in case of accidents — and pack some cleaning supplies just in case." It's also a good idea to bring along a supply of tap water, food and treats that your pet is used to eating and drinking. This can minimize gastrointestinal distress that can be caused by consuming water or food the pets are not used to drinking or eating. Freezing water in a bowl and then letting it slowly thaw during the trip is a good way to prevent it from splashing out. If your travel plans involve crossing state lines with your pet, health certificates are required by most states, as well as other possible health requirements. These certificates can only be issued by a U.S. Department of Agriculture-accredited veterinarian. You can check your state of destination's requirements online at the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.aphis.usda.gov/aphis/pet-travel" target="_blank">USDA-APHIS Traveling With Your Pet</a>&nbsp;website. If traveling by car, the certificates are valid for 30 days. If traveling by plane, most airlines require health certificates within 10 days of traveling. In addition to health certificates, some airlines require acclimation statements from the animal's veterinarian that state the animal is accustomed to the temperature. It is important to note that pets are not allowed to fly when temperatures exceed 85 degrees. "If it is hotter than 85 degrees, no pets are allowed to fly, so you should schedule your flights for early in the morning or during evening hours because of the heat restrictions," Nelson said. Nelson advises against sedation for a pet that will be traveling by plane. Sedatives can affect a pet's balance and ability to regulate its body temperature, which can be crucial if the pet will be in the plane's cargo hold. If excessive noise or motion sickness are an issue, Nelson advises consulting with your veterinarian about options to make the flight more comfortable for the pet. "My best advice is to get on the airline's website before booking travel and find out everything they require as far as crate specifics and other flight regulations," Nelson said. "Be aware that many airlines prohibit certain breeds from traveling on their planes, regardless of the time of year." Regardless of how you are traveling this summer, Nelson encourages pet owners to have some form of identification for their pets. Ideally, a pet will have tags and a microchip, and crates or carriers labeled with pet and owner identification. Consider carrying a picture of your pet in case it should get lost and you need proof of ownership. Also make sure you have enough of your pet's medications, if needed, to last the entire duration of your trip. When boarding a pet, Nelson suggests checking with the facility on health requirements. The most common requirement is for the animal's vaccinations to be up to date before it is admitted to the facility.&nbsp;

"Core vaccines — the distemper combinations for cats and dogs and rabies — are almost exclusively required," Nelson said. "Most also require kennel cough vaccines for dogs, and some require the canine influenza vaccine. Some facilities may have additional requirements for cats. Be proactive and call ahead to ensure your veterinarian has time to get your pet vaccinated so they will be adequately protected before they arrive at the kennel." Nelson said many facilities also offer additional amenities, such as individual or group playtime and grooming services. She also recommends confirming drop-off and pickup times for the facility. Having a neighbor, relative or family friend provide care for your pet is also an option. Certified, professional pet sitters are available in some areas as well.
