Burial will follow in the St. Joseph's Cemetery, Hays.

Visitation will be Wednesday 5 PM - 8 
PM and Thursday 9 AM -9:30 AM all at Brock's-Keithley Funeral Chapel and
 Crematory, 2509 Vine, Hays, KS 67601.

A combined rosary and parish vigil will be at 7 PM on Wednesday at the funeral chapel.

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating a fatal shooting and have arrested a suspect a second time in connection with the crime.

On April 24, sheriff's deputies were sent to a check shots call at the Englewood mobile home park located at 3201 E MacArthur in Wichita, according to Sheriff's Lt. Benjamin Blick.

While responding, deputies received information that a man and woman were inside the residence with apparent gunshot wounds.

When deputies arrived, they had to force entry to the home. Inside the home, they located 42-year-old Nathan Brock and 41-year-old Trisha Benjamin deceased, according to Blick.

On April 26,&nbsp;Sedgwick County Sheriff’s detectives arrested and booked 32-year-old Steven L. Fessenden of Wichita for the murder. He was not charged in the crime.

On Thursday, sheriff’s deputies arrested Fessenden a second time in connection to the deaths He is being held on requested charges of Murder in the First Degree, One count of Murder in the Second Degree and&nbsp;One count of Criminal use of Weapons. He was expected to appear in court on Friday, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A Kansas jail deputy is recovering from injuries after an attack by an inmate.

On Wednesday, the Sedgwick County jail reported the assault that occurred just after 10:30a.m. October 22 in the detention facility, according to sheriff's department spokesperson Robin Busch.

The deputy was attempting to check on a toilet inside of a cell. The inmate identified as 53-year-old&nbsp; <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=70063">Phuoc Tan Le </a>is currently housed in a single occupancy cell due to repeated disciplinary issues within the Detention Facility.

When the deputy entered the cell, Le became aggressive and attacked the deputy. After an approximately two-minute physical altercation, the deputy was able to push his panic pager. A response team came to the pod and was able to secure the inmate and get the deputy the medical assistance needed.

The inmate was seen by clinic staff and was reported to have no apparent injuries. 

The deputy involved received a fractured nasal bone and a fractured right hand that will require surgery. After receiving treatment at the hospital, the deputy was released to return home.

&nbsp;Phuoc Tan Le has been in custody since August 29, 2022. He is currently being held on two counts of public nudity, lewd and lascivious behavior, criminal trespass and interference with an LEO. New charges include aggravated battery, aggravated battery on an LEO and criminal damage to property, according to Busch.

Le has been booked into Sedgwick County Jail 14 times between 2005 and 2022.

She graduated in 1968 from Gardner Edgerton High School, in Gardner, KS.

Linda was an avid reader and never went anywhere without a book. She loved cheering on the Kansas Chiefs. She enjoyed baking and was best known for her ribs and her Texas sheet cake.

Linda’s family includes her children Chris (Layla) Bryan, Kim Morris; grandchildren Colton Bryan, Lexi Bryan, Ty Morris, Tucker Morris; sister Paula “Mim” Simpson; nieces Megan Anders, Jessie Simpson, Ashley Stevens; nephews Clinton Forbes, Jeremy Simpson.&nbsp;

Laura Kelly and two-thirds of respondents felt the state’s economy was on the right track.

The&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.fhsu.edu/docking/Kansas-Speaks/2022-kansas-speaks-report-v5.pdf">survey conducted Sept. 19 to Oct. 2</a>&nbsp;and involving 520 adult residents didn’t reveal how participants might have assessed the work of Attorney General Derek Schmidt, who is challenging Kelly on Nov. 8 in the campaign for governor. The Docking Institute of Public Affairs did pose dozens of public policy questions in the latest edition of “Kansas Speaks.”

In the survey, 50.4% said they were satisfied with Kelly’s performance as governor, while 36.1% said they were dissatisfied with the Democrat. Thirty-one percent endorsed actions of the Kansas Legislature, but a higher portion — 33.5% — expressed displeasure with the Republican-led House and Senate. President Joe Biden, who defeated former President Donald Trump in 2020 but lost in Kansas, was lauded by 32.6% of respondents with 57.2% sharing dissatisfaction with the current president.

Sixty-six percent of Kansans taking part in the survey said the state was on the “right track” in terms of the economy and 34% said they believed the opposite.

However, 46.1% said elements of the Kansas economy were under greater stress, an increase from 33% last year. Thirty-five percent were of the opinion the state’s economy hit a plateau and 18.4% felt it was getting stronger.

“With continuing inflation and persistent declines in the stock market since December, the positive rating of the Kansas economy has slipped somewhat in comparison to the 2021 Kansas Speaks survey,” said survey co-author Jian Sun.

Secretary of State Scott Schwab, Schmidt, Kelly and a bipartisan collection of Kansas politicians have argued the state’s elections were fair and accurate. Others, including former Secretary of State Kris Kobach, raised alarms about security of the voting process.

Just under seven in 10 people surveyed by the Docking Institute said they were confident the system accurately documented winners and losers of political races across the state. Less than 8% said they lacked confidence in accuracy of a Kansas election system that relied on computer technology and paper ballots to record voters’ preferences.

The survey showed 30.5% of respondents concluded ballot drop boxes ought to be banned by the Legislature, but 45.4% said such reform would be a mistake. The opinion gap was wider when people were asked about abolishing mail-in balloting. Twenty-six percent favored a ban on mail voting, while 53.8% said there was no reason to end the practice.

Fourteen percent of people sharing their views in the survey said illegal immigrants were voting in Kansas elections. Twelve percent said they felt government had made voting too difficult.

In addition, 11.6% said “state or local election officials in Kansas committed election fraud to alter election outcomes.”

Two-thirds said K-12 schools in their communities were safe. Forty-eight percent said parents had the “right amount of influence in public education,” while 27.5% said parents didn’t have the correct level of input.

More than 81% said it was important for schools to provide instruction in social and emotional development. Seventy-eight percent favored teaching racial and ethnic history at the high school level, with support for such instruction fell to 70.6% for middle school students and to 55.1% for elementary students.

A mere 16.1% said they would welcome a prohibition on shelving “certain types” of books in high school libraries, but support for that expanded to 28.3% for middle school libraries and 37.1% for elementary school libraries. In Kansas, there has been a surge in public challenges to use in schools of books about sexual development and race relations.

The statewide survey said 66.7% of Kansans believed high school athletes should compete in sports on basis of their gender at birth. Only 16.1% disagreed with that view.

The issue has been extensively debated in the Legislature. Kelly vetoed a bill blocking transgender women and girls from taking part in organized sports. Schmidt said he would sign legislation banning transgender girls or women from competing against individuals declared female at birth.

More than 57% of adults surveyed by the Docking Institute agreed state government shouldn’t place any regulations on “the circumstances under which women can get abortions.” The opposite view was held by 28.6% of those surveyed.

In the August primary, Kansas voters decisively rejected a proposed amendment to the Kansas Constitution that would nullify a Kansas Supreme Court decision that found the state’s Bill of Rights guaranteed women bodily autonomy and access to abortion. The constitutional amendment failed in blue-state Kansas by 172,000 votes, with 59.1% opposed and 40.8% supportive.

Among the survey’s participants, 44.9% voted against the abortion amendment, 22% voted for it and 33.2% didn’t cast a primary ballot.

Seven of 10 responding to the survey said women were in a better position than politicians to make choices about whether a person received an abortion. Only 14.8% said politicians had the best vantage point to decide who could get an abortion.

Sixty percent said the Legislature shouldn’t follow a ban on abortion with a law forbidding women to travel to other states for the procedure. Three-fourths said if Kansas banned abortions they wouldn’t contact authorities to report a woman suspected of having an illegal procedure or to report that person’s medical provider. The same number said state government, not local government, ought to pay the cost of prosecuting anyone accused of violating an abortion ban.

Meanwhile, more than half of respondents said the question of expanding eligibility for Medicaid was highly or extremely important to their decisions when voting for representation in the Legislature. The Legislature approved a bill to broaden eligibility for KanCare, the state’s privatized Medicaid program, but that was vetoed in 2017 by Gov. Sam Brownback.

Since then, the House and Senate haven’t agreed on an expansion bill due to opposition by some Republicans.

Kelly has urged the Legislature to approve a Medicaid reform measure and vowed to introduce a fifth expansion proposal in January. Schmidt, her GOP rival, stands as a “skeptic” of Medicaid changes under the federal Affordable Care Act. The law requires the federal government to cover 90% of the cost of expanded services. So far, 38 states and the District of Columbia expanded Medicaid.

The Docking Institute survey said 71.9% supported expanding Medicaid, which was consistent with previous polling in Kansas. Three-fourths said expansion would strengthen financial foundations of rural Kansas hospitals.

“Support for Medicaid expansion in Kansas remains high, with again over 70% supporting it this year,” said Brett Zollinger, Docking Institute director and survey co-author.

Thirty-five percent were of the opinion the state’s economy hit a plateau and 18.4% felt it was getting stronger.“With continuing inflation and persistent declines in the stock market since December, the positive rating of the Kansas economy has slipped somewhat in comparison to the 2021 Kansas Speaks survey,” said survey co-author Jian Sun.<h2>Election security</h2>Secretary of State Scott Schwab, Schmidt, Kelly and a bipartisan collection of Kansas politicians have argued the state’s elections were fair and accurate. Others, including former Secretary of State Kris Kobach, raised alarms about security of the voting process.Just under seven in 10 people surveyed by the Docking Institute said they were confident the system accurately documented winners and losers of political races across the state. Less than 8% said they lacked confidence in accuracy of a Kansas election system that relied on computer technology and paper ballots to record voters’ preferences.The survey showed 30.5% of respondents concluded ballot drop boxes ought to be banned by the Legislature, but 45.4% said such reform would be a mistake. The opinion gap was wider when people were asked about abolishing mail-in balloting. Twenty-six percent favored a ban on mail voting, while 53.8% said there was no reason to end the practice.Fourteen percent of people sharing their views in the survey said illegal immigrants were voting in Kansas elections. Twelve percent said they felt government had made voting too difficult.In addition, 11.6% said “state or local election officials in Kansas committed election fraud to alter election outcomes.”<h2>Schoolhouse issues</h2>Two-thirds said K-12 schools in their communities were safe. Forty-eight percent said parents had the “right amount of influence in public education,” while 27.5% said parents didn’t have the correct level of input.More than 81% said it was important for schools to provide instruction in social and emotional development. Seventy-eight percent favored teaching racial and ethnic history at the high school level, with support for such instruction fell to 70.6% for middle school students and to 55.1% for elementary students.A mere 16.1% said they would welcome a prohibition on shelving “certain types” of books in high school libraries, but support for that expanded to 28.3% for middle school libraries and 37.1% for elementary school libraries. In Kansas, there has been a surge in public challenges to use in schools of books about sexual development and race relations.The statewide survey said 66.7% of Kansans believed high school athletes should compete in sports on basis of their gender at birth. Only 16.1% disagreed with that view.The issue has been extensively debated in the Legislature. Kelly vetoed a bill blocking transgender women and girls from taking part in organized sports. Schmidt said he would sign legislation banning transgender girls or women from competing against individuals declared female at birth.<h2>Abortion regulations</h2>More than 57% of adults surveyed by the Docking Institute agreed state government shouldn’t place any regulations on “the circumstances under which women can get abortions.” The opposite view was held by 28.6% of those surveyed.In the August primary, Kansas voters decisively rejected a proposed amendment to the Kansas Constitution that would nullify a Kansas Supreme Court decision that found the state’s Bill of Rights guaranteed women bodily autonomy and access to abortion. The constitutional amendment failed in blue-state Kansas by 172,000 votes, with 59.1% opposed and 40.8% supportive.Among the survey’s participants, 44.9% voted against the abortion amendment, 22% voted for it and 33.2% didn’t cast a primary ballot.Seven of 10 responding to the survey said women were in a better position than politicians to make choices about whether a person received an abortion. Only 14.8% said politicians had the best vantage point to decide who could get an abortion.Sixty percent said the Legislature shouldn’t follow a ban on abortion with a law forbidding women to travel to other states for the procedure. Three-fourths said if Kansas banned abortions they wouldn’t contact authorities to report a woman suspected of having an illegal procedure or to report that person’s medical provider. The same number said state government, not local government, ought to pay the cost of prosecuting anyone accused of violating an abortion ban.<h2>Medicaid: No surprise</h2>Meanwhile, more than half of respondents said the question of expanding eligibility for Medicaid was highly or extremely important to their decisions when voting for representation in the Legislature. The Legislature approved a bill to broaden eligibility for KanCare, the state’s privatized Medicaid program, but that was vetoed in 2017 by Gov. Sam Brownback.Since then, the House and Senate haven’t agreed on an expansion bill due to opposition by some Republicans.Kelly has urged the Legislature to approve a Medicaid reform measure and vowed to introduce a fifth expansion proposal in January. Schmidt, her GOP rival, stands as a “skeptic” of Medicaid changes under the federal Affordable Care Act. The law requires the federal government to cover 90% of the cost of expanded services. So far, 38 states and the District of Columbia expanded Medicaid.The Docking Institute survey said 71.9% supported expanding Medicaid, which was consistent with previous polling in Kansas. Three-fourths said expansion would strengthen financial foundations of rural Kansas hospitals.“Support for Medicaid expansion in Kansas remains high, with again over 70% supporting it this year,” said Brett Zollinger, Docking Institute director and survey co-author.

Longtime Kansas City Royals broadcaster Ryan Lefebvre is scheduled to address questions surrounding mental health, including his own journey with depression, during a speech at Kansas Wesleyan University on Nov. 1.

Lefebvre's presentation is scheduled for 7 p.m. Nov. 1 in Sams Chapel and is open to the public at no charge.

In 2008, Lefebvre co-authored a book about his own struggles with depression, titled The Shame of Me: One Man’s Journey to Depression and Back.

Lefebvre is in his 24th season with the Royals, 28th overall in the big leagues, and is a two-time Mid-America Emmy award winner. 

He is active in many Kansas City community activities, including Gloves for Kids, which has raised money for youth programs in Kansas and Missouri for more than 20 years. 

Among a litany of community-related honors, he was the 2006 Boys &amp; Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City Role Model of the Year, the 2011 recipient of the John J. “Buck” O’Neil MVP Award for his commitment to youth in Kansas City, and the 2015 recipient of the Olathe NAACP Diversity in Sports award.

Douglas B. Fate, 79, of Overland Park, Kansas, former area resident, and the son of William L. Fate and Mary Louise (Huscher) Fate, was born November 5, 1942 in Concordia, Kansas and passed away on October 24, 2022 at Morningside Assisted Living, Overland Park, Kansas.

Doug grew up in Hill City, Kansas, graduating from Hill City High School in 1960.&nbsp;&nbsp;

In 1963, he was united in marriage to Mary Kerr and to this union was born, Don, Bill and Bruce. They were later divorced in 1985.

Doug worked for the U.S. Postal Service in the '70s and later was employed at CE Manufacturing from 1976 until 1980. He then returned to the Postal Service until his retirement. Doug also farmed part-time most of his life.

He loved to take his boys hunting and to baseball games. He was a big sports fan and loved the royals and the ksu wildcats. He coached all of his kids in baseball. Doug loved to play baseball and was quite good at it and he played softball until he was in his late 40s traveling around Kansas and Nebraska paying fast pitch. You didn’t want to get hit by one of his dirt clods!

He was preceded in death by his parents William and Mary Fate.

Doug is survived by three sons, Don (Diana) Fate, Bill (Robyn) Fate, and&nbsp; Bruce (Kristi) Fate; grandchildren Zach (Samantha) Fate, Mallory (Lane) Lassiter, Savannah Fate, Karli Fate, Riley Fate, and Delaney Fate; one brother, David (Tasha) Fate;&nbsp; three sisters, Mary Ann (Howard) Gomer,&nbsp; Margaret (Doug) Mall,&nbsp;and Darlene (Jerry) Baker;&nbsp; other relatives and friends.

Cremation was selected and graveside memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 29, 2022 at the Zion Cemetery, rural Belleville, Kansas.

Inurnment will follow the memorial services.

Ronald Lee Reed, the son of Lloyd V. Reed and Blanche H. (Sharp) Reed, was born on September 14, 1942, in Flagler, Colorado. He died on October 22, 2022, at Smith Center Health and Rehab in Smith Center, Kansas.

Ronald was one of nine children born to Lloyd and Blanche. He was raised on a farm south of Flagler, Colorado, and he graduated from Flagler High School in 1960. 

He was united in marriage to Dianna Faye Rogers on September 22, 1963, in Flagler, Colorado, and to this union was born two children.

Ron joined the Colorado State Patrol in 1966, where he served for 11 years. He then took a position with Colowyo Coal Mine in Meeker, Colorado, as a safety engineer. In 1979, Ron’s love for the farm prompted him to move his family to Esbon, Kansas, and they started Reed’s Dairy. In 1981, upon the death of his sister, Ron brought his nephew home from Colorado.

Ron served on the Mid-America Dairy Board of Directors, the Central Area Council Board of Dairy Farmers of America, Mid-West Dairy Association Board, American Dairy Association Board, and he was the president of the White Rock School Board for eight years.

Ron is preceded in death by his parents and seven siblings.

He is survived by his wife Dianna of the home, sister Eleanor Short of Vale, Oregon, daughter Tanna Lee Miller (Glen) of Lyons, Kansas, son James Dee Reed (Linda) of Esbon, Kansas; nephew Matthew Eli Levin (Karolyn) of Verona, Wisconsin, granddaughter Amanda Lee Stone of Hutchinson, Kansas, grandson Landon James Reed (Mayela) of Manhattan, Kansas, grandson Derryck Flavion Walker of Glasco, Kansas, granddaughter Emily Sue Pierce (Daniel) of Mankato, Kansas, great-grandson Waylon Henry Pierce of Mankato, Kansas, great-nieces and nephews Jessica, Essie, Ryan, Tanner and Alex, along with numerous nephews, nieces and many friends.

Private family graveside services will be held on Saturday, October 29, 2022.

Memorial services for friends and family will be held at the United Methodist Church in Burr Oak, Kansas, on Saturday, October 29, 2022, at 11:00 a.m.

Friends may sign Ronald’s book on Friday, October 28, from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., at Melby Mortuary in Mankato.

(Sharp) Reed, was born on September 14, 1942, in Flagler, Colorado. He died on October 22, 2022, at Smith Center Health and Rehab in Smith Center, Kansas.Ronald was one of nine children born to Lloyd and Blanche. He was raised on a farm south of Flagler, Colorado, and he graduated from Flagler High School in 1960. He was united in marriage to Dianna Faye Rogers on September 22, 1963, in Flagler, Colorado, and to this union was born two children.Ron joined the Colorado State Patrol in 1966, where he served for 11 years. He then took a position with Colowyo Coal Mine in Meeker, Colorado, as a safety engineer. In 1979, Ron’s love for the farm prompted him to move his family to Esbon, Kansas, and they started Reed’s Dairy. In 1981, upon the death of his sister, Ron brought his nephew home from Colorado.Ron served on the Mid-America Dairy Board of Directors, the Central Area Council Board of Dairy Farmers of America, Mid-West Dairy Association Board, American Dairy Association Board, and he was the president of the White Rock School Board for eight years.Ron is preceded in death by his parents and seven siblings.He is survived by his wife Dianna of the home, sister Eleanor Short of Vale, Oregon, daughter Tanna Lee Miller (Glen) of Lyons, Kansas, son James Dee Reed (Linda) of Esbon, Kansas; nephew Matthew Eli Levin (Karolyn) of Verona, Wisconsin, granddaughter Amanda Lee Stone of Hutchinson, Kansas, grandson Landon James Reed (Mayela) of Manhattan, Kansas, grandson Derryck Flavion Walker of Glasco, Kansas, granddaughter Emily Sue Pierce (Daniel) of Mankato, Kansas, great-grandson Waylon Henry Pierce of Mankato, Kansas, great-nieces and nephews Jessica, Essie, Ryan, Tanner and Alex, along with numerous nephews, nieces and many friends.Private family graveside services will be held on Saturday, October 29, 2022.Memorial services for friends and family will be held at the United Methodist Church in Burr Oak, Kansas, on Saturday, October 29, 2022, at 11:00 a.m.Friends may sign Ronald’s book on Friday, October 28, from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., at Melby Mortuary in Mankato.In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to the Burr Oak Methodist Church, and may be sent in care of the funeral home.Melby Mortuary of Mankato is assisting the Reed family with these arrangements, www.melbymortuary.com.Memorial services will be Saturday, October 29th, at 11:00 a.m., at the United Methodist Church in Burr Oak.Friends may sign Ronald's register book on Friday, October 28th, from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., at Melby Mortuary.

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A Kansas man accused of violent sex crimes made his first court appearance in the case this we.

Hunter Peach, 23 of Wichita, is charged with 3 counts of rape, 2 counts of aggravated domestic battery, and 2 counts of attempted aggravated criminal sodomy, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

On October 17, a 23-year-old woman reported she was sexually&nbsp; assaulted by Peach, according to Officer Chad Ditch.&nbsp;

Police located Peach and arrested him in the 400 block of West Central in Wichita and booked him on requested sex crimes.

&nbsp;Peach and the woman know each other, according to police. He is in the Sedgwick County Jail on a bond of $300,000, according to the district attorney's office.&nbsp; His next court hearing is October 31.

A local man was booked into jail after he allegedly fled a traffic stop Friday night in west-central Salina.

A Saline County deputy stopped a 2012 Chrysler 300 in the 900 block of W. Prescott Avenue at approximately 10:50 p.m. Friday, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

 </figure>A Salina Police officer familiar with the driver also responded to the stop. As the officer arrived on the scene, the driver, who was identified as Camron Glover, 27, of Salina, was talking to the deputy. Glover allegedly walked toward his vehicle and then took off running to the northwest, Forrester said.The deputy chased Glover on foot, while the officer, who was still in his patrol vehicle, followed in the vehicle.Glover allegedly ran into a yard in the 500 block of Montrose Street and climbed a six-foot privacy fence, breaking four of the pickets in the fence, Forrester said. Glover then allegedly ran through the yard and climbed the back fence, where he broke two more pickets.Total damage to the fence was estimated at $24.Forrester said another officer in the area was able to apprehend Glover in the 500 block of S. Clark Street.Glover was booked into the Saline County Jail on the following requested charges, according to the jail booking report.●Two counts of interference with a law enforcement officer●Criminal damage to property●Criminal trespass
