Tonight, the Southeast of Saline basketball teams will look to open the new year in style as they travel to Minneapolis for a pair of league matchups with the Lions and Lady Lions.

All four teams involved will be in search of a foothold in the NCAA standings, which are still wide open with two months remaining in the regular season.

Girls Game: SE of Saline (4-2, 2-0) vs. Minneapolis (7-0, 3-0)

The annual battles between the Lady Trojans and Lions have fast developed into one of the most entertaining rivalries in the league, and the first meeting between the two should be no different, featuring the last remaining undefeateds in the NCAA.

Minneapolis already began the new year with a 53-39 win over Sacred Heart on Tuesday, and SES capped off 2023 with a win of their own over the Lady Knights 35-25.

Now, these two foes will collide with a spot atop the league standings on the line in Minneapolis.

“This game means a lot to the girls especially after they came out and beat us in this game last year,” SES head coach Shauna Smith said. “They’ve been young for a long time but every year they get a little bit older and a little bit better. We know them well and a lot of our girls play with them in the summer which makes for a fun rivalry.”

In order to slow the Lady Lion advance, Southeast will have to contend with an offense that has shared the ball well this season, scoring over 55 points a night through the first month of the campaign.

“All of their kids on the floor can be scorers so we all have to play defense and we can’t zone in on one person,” Smith said. “We’ll have to play smart, we can’t take any possessions off, and we have to make them play defense in a half-court.”

Tip-off between the Lady Trojans and Lions is scheduled for 6:00 on the campus of Minneapolis.

Boys Game: SE of Saline (2-4, 0-2) vs. Minneapolis (1-6, 1-2)

On the boy’s side, this matchup will feature two teams looking to start the new year fresh after disappointing Decembers.

Both teams will look to erase the memory of a brutal loss at the hands of Sacred Heart in their last matchup as the two get set to do battle on Friday night.

For Southeast, the winter break was more than just a mental rest, it also allowed the Trojans to heal up physically, after a short turnaround between seasons.

“The break was much needed to say the least,” SES head coach Bryson Flax said. We’ve got a lot of guys that came straight over from football and this is a year-round grind for a lot of them so when you can squeeze in some time to rest up it can be refreshing and it can bring a team back with a different mindset.”

The Trojans will look to take advantage of a Lions squad that leans heavily on sophomore star Owen Just, who has helped carry their offense for better and worse in 2023.

“They run everything they do through the Just kid and they want to get as many shots for him as they can,” Flax said. “Coach Darrow does a good job of being creative in getting him space to get shots off and when you watch them on film you don’t see the losses getting to them, they’re still playing extremely hard and they really impressed me with how hard they play.”

In order to pick up their first league win of the season, Southeast will need to remain vigilant around Just defensively while not falling asleep on a number of role players around him who can be just as dangerous in stretches.

“They’ll throw a couple of different looks at you defensively but offensively the Just kid is option A, B, and C for them,” Flax said. “He’ll hit some shots but we can’t let other guys get free for offensive boards and stickbacks and we can’t give them easy opportunities in transition.”

Tip-off for the boy’s game will take place 15 minutes after the conclusion of the girl’s game.

SES Opens New Year on the Road at Minneapolis

As Salina Aquatics Club (SAC) returns to the pool after a well-deserved holiday break, they reflect on the first half of the short course swimming season and take stock of a string of successful meets that laid the groundwork for an eagerly awaited spring.

The fall meets were a testament to the grit and talent of SAC's swimmers, showcasing the club's pursuit of excellence. Fall meets are typically used to build the stamina necessary to work through the season’s grind, make changes to mechanics, and try new technique changes while establishing qualifying times for spring championship meets. The fall meets started in early October with a trip to Wichita State’s Wiedemann Natatorium for the Battle in ICT. Competitions in Hutchinson, Topeka, Lenexa, and another trip to Wichita made up the fall schedule, with all swimmers making significant gains and achieving personal bests.

Most of the focus in the fall was on the senior squad, with several junior high and high school swimmers participating in multiple meets. The senior swimmers are led by Ali Richardson, a Southeast of Saline Junior whose fall season was marked by a great early December outing at the KCB Winter Classic in Lenexa where she achieved season-best numbers in every event, along with a personal best cut in the 100 yard freestyle, leading to a 5th place finish in that event and 22nd overall in a highly competitive meet that brought together swimmers from four states.

On the boys’ side, up-and-coming swimmer Clayton Shamburg, an 8th grader from Bennington, put up season-best numbers at Topeka Swim Association’s Halloween Spooktacular meet. He swam seven events at the meet, improving his best time in six events, only narrowly missing a then-personal best in the 50 yard freestyle by only 0.02 seconds. Clayton took home a top finish of 2nd place in the 200 yard breaststroke and 6th place overall in his division.

From the junior squad, Lindsborg swimmer Caroline King, and Salina’s Mya Fulkerson and Otto Cote are continuing their development, with Caroline putting up personal best numbers at Hutchinson’s meet in November, posting an impressive 20-second drop on her 100 yard backstroke at that meet, moving her into a 5th place finish.

With the fall chapter closed, SAC is gearing up for the upcoming regional championship meets in the spring. The spring schedule includes several return visits to invitationals in Topeka, Wichita, and Hutchinson before wrapping up with progressive championship meets hosted this year in Wichita and Topeka.

Swimmers are primed for the challenge, eager to compete at a higher level, break personal records, and make waves for the club. Along with Richardson and Shamburg, Salina Central sophomore Josie Ebel and Abilene 8th grader Lily Gruen are poised to peak just in time for a strong run in the championship meets, while Southeast of Saline sophomore Matthew Whelchel completes the KSHSAA boys’ high school season and should return to club swimming in time to join the squad at champs.

&nbsp;"Our swimmers have put good effort into the first half of the season. Looking forward to the spring meets, I think we're poised for more growth and achievements as a team,”Coach Jake Jacobs said.

USA Swimming’s championship meet format allows many of the top swimmers in each event to continue to rise through the various progressive meets, with swimmers ultimately able to qualify to participate in elite meets such as the Futures Championship, Junior National Championship, and ultimately the Senior Nationals and US Olympic Trials. Each of the championship meets, even at the regional level, requires either qualifying times or prior top finishes to enter, so participation at even the lowest levels is a great accomplishment.

The spring meets are pivotal for SAC's swimmers, offering a platform to shine and vie with the best in the region. Salina will be hosting teams from across the state at their annual spring home “Ice Melt”. The meet will be hosted at the Salina South High School Natatorium on January 13 and 14, 2024, with a 10:00 a.m. meet start each day. 

Admission is free to the public. The club extends thanks to the community, families, and sponsors for their support as SAC enters this exciting phase of the season.

Salina Aquatics Club: strong first half, sights set on spring competitions

Salina Post proudly presents Flashback Friday in partnership with the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.smokyhillmuseum.org/">Smoky Hill Museum</a>. Enjoy a weekly tidbit of local history from the staff at Salina Post and the Smoky Hill Museum as we present "Salina-Flashback Fridays."

Originating in the high plains of eastern Colorado, the 575-mile-long Smoky Hill River provides animals with sustenance, gives people a place to recreate, and has served as an economic driver that catapulted Salina into the 20th and 21st Centuries.

1858, Salina's founders chose the city site because of its practical location. The town, located on the westernmost point of the ancient Indian trail, was established as a trading post for prospectors bound for Colorado, westbound immigrants, and Native American tribes.

Early settlers harnessed the power from the flowing river, which soon ran mills that sawed trees into wood and ground grain into flour. Salina's milling industry was born and steadily grew to the third-largest flour-producing city in the world.

The river also became the place to celebrate life. Picnics, horse racing, boat trips and swimming enhanced the quality of life and helped build the young community.

Waters that brought relaxation and prosperity to the small community also brought devastation. Residents of Salina experienced multiple flood events not too long after the city's establishment.

One of the first floods that impacted the city happened in 1903. The flood, caused by a deluge of 17.13 inches of rain, took place in May.

Flooding of the Smoky Hill River continued over the next several decades, with floods occurring in 1915, 1938, 1941, and 1951. 

The flood of 1938, in particular, was especially catastrophic for the Smoky Hill River Valley. Homesteads, farms and small towns in the area were devastated. Kansas congressional leaders passed legislation in Washington, D.C. that authorized the construction of the Kanopolis dam in 1940. Despite the project's temporary suspension during World War II, the first artificial lake in Kansas, Kanpolis Lake, wasn't completed until 1948.

Despite these safeguards, the river was still susceptible to flooding. 

In 1951, following another catastrophic flood, local leaders cut off the channel's flow through Salina. What once was picturesque enough to have the movie "Picnic" filmed on its banks is now a silt-filled ditch.

In 1957, construction began on the diversion channel and levee system by the Corps of Engineers as part of the city's flood protection plan. The structure was completed in 1961.

The original river channel dried up, and Salina's identity with its historic river seemed to fade into history. In 1986 The City of Salina and the Chamber of Commerce conducted a study to determine the desired outcome for the old channel. The result was nearly unanimous - the beautification of the old channel.

During the late 80s and early 90s, the river project was somewhat forgotten and the revitalization project temporarily shelved. Another flooding event happened along the river in 1993.

In the mid-2000s, like the city founders who came more than 100 years before them, Salina residents still saw the river as an incredible asset. 

The Friends of the River Foundation held its first organizational meeting in 2007. The group's mission is "to strive and restore the natural channel of the Smoky Hill River to its role as an integral part of the aesthetic, recreational, and economic life of Salina."

In 2009, the foundation became a 501c3 and collected input from 3,500 residents about what they wanted the Smoky Hill River to look like. In December 2009, the Salina City Commission authorized the preparation of a master plan to guide the restoration and renewal of the Old Smoky Hill River channel. 

Salina Downtown, Inc., on behalf of the Friends of the River Foundation and in partnership with multiple private and public agencies, engaged ConsultEcon, Inc. to conduct an economic impact analysis of the Smoky Hill River Renewal Master Plan.

In 2015, the group hired Jane Anderson as executive director to help continue the project for the future. By the following year, the organization pushed to pass a sales tax increase to fund the renewal project.

From 2015 to 2023, the group continued to acquire funding for the project and eventually became a funded partner of the Salina Area United Way in the Summer of 2023.

One chilly morning in October 2023, the Friends of the River Foundation opened the first half-mile portion of the concrete walking path next to the channel.

"This trail is the first construction project of many to come in the near future," Anderson said. "(It) allows the public to have a beginning glimpse of what the Smoky Hill River Renewal Project could bring to this community."

 </figure>The flood of 1938, in particular, was especially catastrophic for the Smoky Hill River Valley. Homesteads, farms and small towns in the area were devastated. Kansas congressional leaders passed legislation in Washington, D.C. that authorized the construction of the Kanopolis dam in 1940. Despite the project's temporary suspension during World War II, the first artificial lake in Kansas, Kanpolis Lake, wasn't completed until 1948.Despite these safeguards, the river was still susceptible to flooding. In 1951, following another catastrophic flood, local leaders cut off the channel's flow through Salina. What once was picturesque enough to have the movie "Picnic" filmed on its banks is now a silt-filled ditch.In 1957, construction began on the diversion channel and levee system by the Corps of Engineers as part of the city's flood protection plan. The structure was completed in 1961.The original river channel dried up, and Salina's identity with its historic river seemed to fade into history. In 1986 The City of Salina and the Chamber of Commerce conducted a study to determine the desired outcome for the old channel. The result was nearly unanimous - the beautification of the old channel.During the late 80s and early 90s, the river project was somewhat forgotten and the revitalization project temporarily shelved. Another flooding event happened along the river in 1993.<figure>

 </figure>In the mid-2000s, like the city founders who came more than 100 years before them, Salina residents still saw the river as an incredible asset. The Friends of the River Foundation held its first organizational meeting in 2007. The group's mission is "to strive and restore the natural channel of the Smoky Hill River to its role as an integral part of the aesthetic, recreational, and economic life of Salina."LISTEN:&nbsp;<a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/457e5416-2eab-4749-a306-a57491d4a422">Jane Anderson, Friends of the River Executive Director</a>In 2009, the foundation became a 501c3 and collected input from 3,500 residents about what they wanted the Smoky Hill River to look like. In December 2009, the Salina City Commission authorized the preparation of a master plan to guide the restoration and renewal of the Old Smoky Hill River channel. Salina Downtown, Inc., on behalf of the Friends of the River Foundation and in partnership with multiple private and public agencies, engaged ConsultEcon, Inc. to conduct an economic impact analysis of the Smoky Hill River Renewal Master Plan.In 2015, the group hired Jane Anderson as executive director to help continue the project for the future. By the following year, the organization pushed to pass a sales tax increase to fund the renewal project.From 2015 to 2023, the group continued to acquire funding for the project and eventually became a funded partner of the Salina Area United Way in the Summer of 2023.<figure>

 </figure>One chilly morning in October 2023, the Friends of the River Foundation opened the first half-mile portion of the concrete walking path next to the channel."This trail is the first construction project of many to come in the near future," Anderson said. "(It) allows the public to have a beginning glimpse of what the Smoky Hill River Renewal Project could bring to this community."<figure>

Girl's game: Sacred Heart (3-3, 0-1) vs. Minneapolis (6-0, 1-1)&nbsp;

Sacred Heart is coming off a 3-3 start to the season and, for the first time in seven games, will play at home against Minneapolis on Tuesday night. 

The Lady Knights have already been tested by multiple ranked teams away from Salina. Their biggest win thus far was a 45-36 upset at defending 2A state champion and #6 Berean Academy.

Minneapolis looks to be another tough matchup for Sacred Heart as the Lady Lions come in with a perfect 6-0 record overall and are 2-0 in the NCAA League.&nbsp;

Tip-off for the girl’s game is set for 6:00 pm from the Sacred Heart Gym.

Boy's game: Sacred Heart (6-0, 1-0) vs. Minneapolis (1-5, 1-0)

The Sacred Heart boys begin 2024 unbeaten with a 6-0 record. They went a perfect 3-0 at the Irish Classic tournament in Chapman and blew out Southeast of Saline in their lone NCAA league game so far this season.

Minneapolis comes in with a very young team and only one senior to likely see playing time. The Lions have struggled out of the gate with five straight losses, but did pick up their lone win against league foe Republic County.

Tip-off for the boy’s game is set for 7:30 pm from the Sacred Heart Gym.

A New Year and An Old Rival; Sacred Heart Hosts Minneapolis on the Hardwood

Brian Lee Keeler, 71, of Gypsum, KS, passed away peacefully on December 22, 2023. He was born on February 25, 1952, to Marion and Shirley (Schwarz)Keeler, in Salina KS. Brian lived a fulfilling life and touched the hearts of all who met him.

Family was at the center of Brian’s life. He is survived by his wife, of 49 years, Sally (Stock) Keeler, brothers Bill (Sharon) Keeler, McPherson KS and Brad (LaNell) Keeler, Gypsum KS and numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by both of his parents. His love, wisdom, and kindness will be dearly missed by his entire family and friends.

Brian grew up in Gypsum and attended Southeast of Saline High School graduating in 1970 and then attended Kansas State Teachers College at Emporia. He returned to Gypsum where he worked for Morton Buildings and met the love of his life, Sally. They were married in 1974 and displayed their commitment to one another throughout their 49 years together.

He was known for his quick wit, storytelling and being the life of the party wherever he went. Whether it was hunting whitetail deer on Gypsum Creek, putting together real estate deals, mingling with the regular coffee drinkers in Gypsum, or contributing time to help his church, Brian approached life with his unique blend of intelligence, humor, and selflessness. He was a successful salesman, entrepreneur, and landlord for 52 plus years, leaving a lasting impact on his friends and his community.

In his spare time, Brian enjoyed hunting, fishing, and entertaining all that were around, and loving on his nieces and nephews by attending many of their events or cheering them on from afar.

He built his home, one of his bucket list items, in 1997. He loved that he had a place that his hands had been a part of. Soon after he and Sally were married, he was able to live in Colorado in a log cabin and enjoy the mountains from his deck. He was particularly passionate about seeing the country and got the opportunity over the past few years to travel to Hawaii, Missouri, Colorado, Wisconsin, and Louisiana. He was also dedicating time and energy to making a positive difference in the community through the Lions Club of Gypsum and their church, Gypsum Community Church.

Brian will be remembered for his generosity, his never-give-up attitude which he displayed till the end of his life, and his spirit will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him. May he rest in peace in God’s arms.

Friends and family are invited to the visitation on Wednesday, January 3, 2024 from 5 - 7 PM at Roselawn Memorial Heights Chapel, 1920 E. Crawford Salina, KS. Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 4, 2024 at 11:00 AM in the Gypsum Community Church, 524 King St., Gypsum, KS, a luncheon will immediately follow. There will be a private family burial in the afternoon in Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Salina, KS. In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Gypsum Community Church; 524 E. King; Gypsum, KS 67448.

Robert D. Conley, 93, of Salina, died Thursday, December 21, 2023.&nbsp; He was born December 19, 1930, near Gypsum and was the first child of Dale and Fern (Mortimer) Conley. &nbsp;

He attended rural Gypsum elementary schools and graduated from Gypsum High School.&nbsp; He attended Kansas Wesleyan University and Fort Hays State University.&nbsp; Bob served in the Air Force&nbsp; during the Korean War.

Bob would say his absolutely best decision was marrying his beloved wife, Doris Lauxman Conley on July 5, 1959, in the Carlton Presbyterian Church. They farmed together and raised registered Angus cattle in the Gypsum community for over 60 years.

Bob was on the Kansas Angus Association board of directors, serving as President in1983. He was also on the Dickinson County Rural Water Board, D. S. and O Rural Electric Board and Southeast of Saline School Board, serving as President one year.&nbsp; He was especially proud of serving on the school board that helped build the new K-12 consolidated school building which was completed in 1978.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris, his parents, and two brothers, Dwight Conley and Fred Conley.&nbsp; Survivors include two daughters, Janice Nikkel and husband Mark Nikkel, Maple Hill, and Anita Miller and her husband Joe Miller of Enterprise; and one son, Dwight Conley and wife Julie Conley, Gypsum; a sister-in-law, Ilene Conley of Smyrna, Georgia; two&nbsp;step-siblings,&nbsp; Margaret (Gene) Fritz, Gypsum and Wendell (Helen) Walker, Boulder, Colorado and six grandchildren; Caitlin(Kody) Lynn, Hannah(Ryan) Hahn, Kristin(Alex) Little, Drew Miller, Catherine(Wyatt)Peverley and Taylor Nikkel, and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 27th at the Gypsum Community Church with burial in the Gypsum Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday, December 26, at the Ryan Mortuary, 137 N 8th Street, Salina from 6:30 p.m.- 8:00 p.m.

Memorials are to the Gypsum Community Church or the Eisenhower Foundation.

On Monday night, Southeast of Saline and Sacred Heart played to a split on the hardwood with all four teams closing out the 2023 calendar portion of their seasons.

The Lady Trojans continued their dominance over Sacred Heart, winning their seventh straight over the Lady Knights, while the Knights dominated to win their first over the Trojans in two years.

Girls Game: SE of Saline 35, Sacred Heart 25

After playing the first quarter within one possession, the next three frames would swing this game back and forth, with the Lady Trojans taking a commanding 12-point lead into the half.

Sacred Heart tightened the screws defensively, holding Southeast without a single bucket from the floor in the third quarter and slowly but steadily restoring the deficit to just three points.

From there however, the Lady Trojans responded in kind, holding the Lady Knights to just two made field goals in the fourth and putting the game to bed in another double-digit victory.

“It’s a lot easier going into break 4-2 than 3-3 and it’s always nice to end on a win,” SES head coach Shauna Smith said. I thought we did a really good job tonight. I thought we did a great job defensively for all 32 minutes.”

Sacred Heart spread their scoring across just three players, with Avery Eshelman collecting ten, Katie Weiss adding nine, and Skylar Douglas chipping in six.

On the other side of the matchup, seven different Lady Trojans scored, as Adyson Rohr led the way with a new career-high nine points.

With this result, Southeast heads into the winter break at 4-2 while Sacred Heart heads to the holidays at 3-3.

Boys Game: SE of Saline 60, Sacred Heart 36

On the boys’ side, this matchup looked to be another instant classic between two heated rivals until an 8-0 run to close the half put the Knights firmly in the driver's seat.

The Trojans committed 15 turnovers, including seven in the second quarter alone, and Sacred Heart capitalized, pulling away and never looking back in a road rout.

“This one’s on me,” SES head coach Bryson Flax said. “When you get beat by 30 you’re either significantly worse or underprepared. You won’t convince me that we’re 30 points worse than them and so I’ve gotta be better, this one doesn’t sit well.”

It was another masterclass for Michael Matteucci, who dropped 17 points in the win, aided by 12 from Will Tuttle and 8 from both Luca Adami and Jason Marrs.

While the Trojans did have six players in scoring, none cracked double digits, with Omar Calzada (9), Owen Bailey (9), and Gannon Jacobson (8), leading the way.

The Knights remain perfect at 6-0 heading into the winter break while the Trojans fall to 2-4.

Southeast and Sacred Heart Split 2023 Finale

The Southeast of Saline and Sacred Heart basketball teams will close out the 2023 calendar year with a finale in Gypsum tonight, with both fanbases preparing for what should be a fun pair of battles.

The Trojans and Lady Trojans come into this contest fresh off a split with Hillsboro while the Knights and Lady Knights have had nine days to rest up following the Fighting Irish Classic.

Girls Game: SE of Saline (3-2) vs. Sacred Heart (3-2)

SES ran into a buzzsaw on Friday, fighting hard but lacking the firepower to match fourth-ranked Hillsboro in a 44-30 final.

Despite dropping back to 3-2, the Lady Trojans are primed to get right back to work, looking to take down a big rival on Tuesday night.

“Offensively we have to be more consistent,” SES head coach Shauna Smith said. “You’re going to have nights like Friday night but we have to shoot the ball better and be better finishing at the rim.”

While Southeast has won the last six meetings between these two, taking both games in each of the last three years, Sacred Heart has gotten off to a strong start themselves, punctuated by a win over 6th-ranked Berean Academy in the Irish Classic.

"They've owned the series in recent years but it's going to be a dogfight," Sacred Heart head coach Carl Hines said. "They might be smaller and less experienced than us, but they're going to play tough, and they'll be ready for us."

Tip-off between the Lady Trojans and Lady Knights is scheduled for 6:00 pm on the campus of Southeast of Saline High School.

Boys Game: SE of Saline (2-3) vs. Sacred Heart (5-0)

After finishing each of the last two seasons around .500, the Sacred Heart boy’s basketball team is eager to restore their program back to its former glory and is off to an impeccable start with an unblemished record in 2023.

One thing that undoubtedly resides on the Knight’s checklist, is wrestling control of their rivalry series back away from Southeast of Saline, who has won each of the last four contests over the last two seasons.

The Trojans got a bounce-back win over Hillsboro on Friday night but will need to take another step forward tonight to contend with their biggest rival, and to maintain a foothold on their position in the NCAA.

“We’ll have to be good against ball screens and our defense has to be far better than it’s been,” SES head coach Bryson Flax said. “We watched the film from the other night and there were a lot of correctable things that we saw. We have to be good on the glass and when they give us opportunities we’ll have to be efficient offensively.”

Southeast will also have to be wary of a loaded Sacred Heart roster, that returned all of its varsity minutes from a season ago and looks to be getting the most out of that experience.

“It all starts for them with Michael Matteucci,” Flax said. “He’s so crafty and able to get downhill and create for his teammates. They play really hard, they play really good defense and it’s a typical well-coached, hard-nosed Brian Gormley basketball team.”

SES and Sacred Heart Collide in Gypsum for 2023 Finale

The Southeast of Saline basketball teams returned to Gypsum on Friday night to tangle with Hillsboro and worked another split in their second-to-last doubleheader of the calendar year.

Girls Game: SE of Saline 30, Hillsboro 44

Southeast started slow on the girl’s side against the fourth-ranked Hillsboro Lady Trojans, trailing 12-6 at the end of the first quarter and 26-11 at the half.

“We looked like we were playing in slo-mo in the first half and we weren’t getting to any 50/50 balls,” SES head coach Shauna Smith said. “They got a lot of easy putbacks in the first half and we didn’t contend those rebounds.”

Despite converting on just three field goals in the first half, Southeast continued to battle and kept themselves in the game with relentless defense.

Ultimately however, the Lady Trojans couldn’t overcome the slow shooting night, as Hillsboro converted 7-9 at the line in the fourth, pulling away in a 44-30 win.

Hillsboro was led by a trio of double-digit scorers in Savannah Shahan (16), Zaylee Werth (15), and Amyah Werth (11), while SES got ten points out of Lexi Jacobson.

With this result, Southeast drops to 3-2 while Hillsboro remains undefeated at 5-0.

Boys Game: SE of Saline 62, Hillsboro 50

On the heels of a short skid, the Southeast boys were in need of a bounceback, and they got it in convincing fashion over another Trojan foe.

SES put the locks on Hillsboro defensively in the first quarter, holding their opponent to just six points on two field goals and taking a 12-6 lead early.

Hillsboro sorted things out offensively in the second quarter, trimming the lead to nine after two, and six after three, but Southeast would pull away in the fourth to take home another double-digit win.

“I was all fired up at halftime,” SES head coach Bryson Flax said. “We were running to the perimeter and leaving the paint early and they were throwing passes in late. We cleared the majority of that up at the half but we did some uncharacteristic things tonight that we’ll have to clean up if we want to win big games.”

Hillsboro had two scorers in double figures in the losing effort led by Lincoln Wichert (16) and Seth Driggers (10).

Meanwhile, the Trojans of SES spread their scoring out across the board, with eight different contributors, and four double-digit scorers in Gannon Jacobson (14), Owen Bailey (13), Brenton Leeds (11), and Daniel Kejr (10).

“We did some good things offensively tonight,” Flax said. “Our balance was good and the guys did a good job of sharing the basketball but we got lazy in a few spurts.”

With this result Southeast improves to 2-3 while Hillsboro drops to 1-4.

The Trojans and Lady Trojans will have one final test before 2024 as they prepare to host Sacred Heart on Monday.

SES Splits with Hillsboro on Friday Night

Following another split with Abilene on Tuesday, the Southeast of Saline basketball teams will finally get to spend some time at home, returning to Gypsum tonight to play host to the Hillsboro Trojans

This will be the first of two sets of home games for SES, who will cap off the 2023 calendar year with Sacred Heart next Monday.

Girls Game: SE of Saline (3-1) vs. Hillsboro (1-3)

The Lady Trojans of SES have cemented their status with three straight wins and will look to continue surging tonight against a rebuilding Hillsboro program.

While Southeast won last year’s contest convincingly (56-37), Hillsboro still owns the recent series history, winning four of the last five meetings.

While Hillsboro doesn’t look as dominant as they have in years past, this is still a veteran-heavy team, and the purple and white will need to stay on their toes.

“Hillsboro has a lot of really experienced basketball players who are very knowledgeable,” SES head coach Shauna Smith said. “If our rotations are off they’ll find the open person and all five of them can score at any time.”

Meanwhile, for Southeast to roll into Monday’s finale with a full head of steam the Lady Trojans will need to continue attacking the basket and deepening their rotation.

“We still need to see some more consistent offense from our kids off the bench,” Smith said. “We’ve gotten some great looks but we also need to finish better around the rim.”

Tip-off between the rival Lady Trojans’ is scheduled for 6:00.

Boys Game: SE of Saline (1-3) vs. Hillsboro (1-3)

On the boy’s side, the Trojans will have an excellent shot to break their skid, having played two state-ranked opponents in their first four contests.

In a carbon copy of the recent girl’s results, SES took home last year’s win in this series 56-37, but the Hillsboro boys have dominated the recent history winning four out of five.

The Trojans in maroon find themselves under new leadership this year, and are still adjusting to a somewhat new philosophy, which could make tonight’s matchup all the more interesting.

“Hillsboro played the same way for so long and any time you have a coach like that retire you never really know who they’re going to be until you see them,” SES head coach Bryson Flax said. “They feel like a good mix of both philosophies, they defend hard but pressure less, they take away opportunities for you to get to the basket, and offensively they never stop moving.”

To counter that constant action on offense, the Southeast defense will need to communicate well, be sound on switches, and good on help defense without overpursuing.

The boy’s game will begin 20 minutes after the conclusion of the girl's game tonight.

 </figure>Following another split with Abilene on Tuesday, the Southeast of Saline basketball teams will finally get to spend some time at home, returning to Gypsum tonight to play host to the Hillsboro TrojansThis will be the first of two sets of home games for SES, who will cap off the 2023 calendar year with Sacred Heart next Monday.Girls Game: SE of Saline (3-1) vs. Hillsboro (1-3)The Lady Trojans of SES have cemented their status with three straight wins and will look to continue surging tonight against a rebuilding Hillsboro program.While Southeast won last year’s contest convincingly (56-37), Hillsboro still owns the recent series history, winning four of the last five meetings.While Hillsboro doesn’t look as dominant as they have in years past, this is still a veteran-heavy team, and the purple and white will need to stay on their toes.“Hillsboro has a lot of really experienced basketball players who are very knowledgeable,” SES head coach Shauna Smith said. “If our rotations are off they’ll find the open person and all five of them can score at any time.”Meanwhile, for Southeast to roll into Monday’s finale with a full head of steam the Lady Trojans will need to continue attacking the basket and deepening their rotation.“We still need to see some more consistent offense from our kids off the bench,” Smith said. “We’ve gotten some great looks but we also need to finish better around the rim.”Tip-off between the rival Lady Trojans’ is scheduled for 6:00.Boys Game: SE of Saline (1-3) vs. Hillsboro (1-3)On the boy’s side, the Trojans will have an excellent shot to break their skid, having played two state-ranked opponents in their first four contests.In a carbon copy of the recent girl’s results, SES took home last year’s win in this series 56-37, but the Hillsboro boys have dominated the recent history winning four out of five.The Trojans in maroon find themselves under new leadership this year, and are still adjusting to a somewhat new philosophy, which could make tonight’s matchup all the more interesting.“Hillsboro played the same way for so long and any time you have a coach like that retire you never really know who they’re going to be until you see them,” SES head coach Bryson Flax said. “They feel like a good mix of both philosophies, they defend hard but pressure less, they take away opportunities for you to get to the basket, and offensively they never stop moving.”To counter that constant action on offense, the Southeast defense will need to communicate well, be sound on switches, and good on help defense without overpursuing.The boy’s game will begin 20 minutes after the conclusion of the girl's game tonight.Broadcast Information - Location: SE of Saline High School - Radio: KINA (910 AM/107.5 FM) - Live Stream Video: Link Below - Pregame: 5:30 PM<figure>

SES Returns Home to Host Hillsboro on the Hardwood

Along the narrow streets of Assaria sit century-old buildings filled with stories of the small town's inhabitants.&nbsp;

One of those buildings once stood as the home of the Assaria Trojans, but today, it houses a beloved fine dining eatery named the Renaissance Café.

From Oban to Assaria — early history of the small community

Just a few miles west of the Smoky Hill River in south Saline County, English and Scottish settlers organized a tiny community named Oban, a Scottish word meaning "little bay," in the late 1800s.

Mans Peterson and Ben Hesser were among the region's first settlers in 1868, when they and the other community members began building grain elevators, hotels, a telegraph and post office and a roller mill.

 </figure>While the initial colonists left the region, many Swedish settlers arrived and founded the Assaria Lutheran Church.One of those Swedish settlers, Jonas Applequist, arrived in 1870 with his family and established deep roots in the new community. His descendants later founded Great Plains Manufacturing Inc.In 1879, a town company led by Highland Fairchild plotted and organized the town, renaming it Assaria as a tribute to its Swedish population. By 1883, Assaria boomed with growth, establishing 30 homes in the community and a population of 150 people by 1884.The town's schools grew alongside its population, with 49 students in the primary grades and 54 in the advanced program. According to the Smoky Hill Museum, Assaria High School graduated its first class in 1913 with three students.<h2>Assaria Schools to fine Italian cuisine</h2>Assaria's schools only continued to grow, requiring the town to build a new school in 1919. There, kindergarten through 12th-grade students learned and competed as the Assaria Trojans.<figure>

 </figure>The school featured four floors of classrooms and office spaces, with the ground floor housing the gymnasium and theater stage. The school's cafeteria surrounded the gym on a second-floor balcony, where the Renaissance Cafe serves its patrons today.Throughout the next 50 years, the school continued to teach the community's children until 1968, when Assaria Schools consolidated with Southeast of Saline USD 306.The building remained empty for a decade until Roy Applequist, the founder and CEO of Great Plains Manufacturing, purchased the school to expand his budding agricultural business."We bought the whole square block there in 1978," Applequist said. "As part of the Assaria High School building, there was a cafeteria there."Applequist said the roughly 75 employees at Great Plains in Assaria used the cafeteria for lunch, where local women would cook for the workers."We had an hour lunch period, so a lot of us played volleyball for the last half hour of lunch," Applequist said.Besides eating, the school also housed Great Plains' first factory, producing most of Applequist's products on the ground floor for the first three years until they needed more space for manufacturing.READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/d40aa69e-965b-4a3e-81c1-59182cec5931">📸 Flashback Friday: Salina Post - Brookville Hotel - Vol. 19</a>The school continued to service Great Plains until the early 2000s when Applequist decided to use this historic building in a new way — an eatery inspired by his world travels.Initially, the idea stemmed from when the local Coffee Cup Café burned down and left the community without a regular eatery. Applequist decided to open the cafeteria for patrons until he found a new opportunity to transform the location into a fine dining establishment.Today, the school houses the Renaissance Cafe, with posters and photos Applequist and his family gathered from their global travels, alongside some excerpts from books and catalogs from the 1800s."Around the balcony, there's probably several hundred sepia-toned pictures," Applequist said. "We had one set of books that was famous people in the U.S. mainly that was published in 1890, so we took those pictures to the computer and blew them up to different sizes."One of the portraits featured the previous U.S. president, Abraham Lincoln, alongside famous authors of the time.Today, the cafe offers dining on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, catering and event opportunities, where patrons can view the gym while dining in the past Assaria School cafeteria.
