MOSCOW (AP) — Jailed American basketball star Brittney Griner on Thursday pleaded guilty to drug possession and smuggling during her trial in Moscow but said she had no intention of committing a crime, Russian news agencies reported.

The reports quoted Griner as saying through an interpreter at the court hearing that she had acted unintentionally because she was packing in haste.

Griner was detained in February at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport after vape canisters with cannabis oil allegedly were found in her luggage. She faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted of large-scale transportation of drugs.

The trial of the Phoenix Mercury star and two-time Olympic gold medalist began last week amid a growing chorus of calls for Washington to do more to secure her freedom nearly five months after her arrest.

Before Thursday’s hearing, Russian police escorted Griner, handcuffed and clad in a bright red T-shirt and sports trousers, into the courtroom past a crowd of journalists.

The athlete was detained in February at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport after vape canisters with cannabis oil allegedly were found in her luggage. She faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted of large-scale transportation of drugs.

Elizabeth Rood, deputy chief of mission at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, told reporters after the hearing that she spoke to Griner in the courtroom and shared a letter from President Joe Biden that she read.

“She’s eating well, she’s able to read books and under the circumstances she’s doing well,” Rood said of Griner.

“I would like again to emphasize the commitment of the U.S. government at the very highest level to bring home safely Ms. Griner and all U.S. citizens wrongfully detained as well as the commitment of the U.S. Embassy in Moscow to care for and protect the interests of all U.S. citizens detained or imprisoned in Russia,” Rood said.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov bristled at the U.S. description of Briner as “wrongfully detained” and warned that “attempts by the American side to make noise in public ... don’t help the practical settlement of issues.”

The White House said Biden called Griner’s wife on Wednesday to assure her that he’s doing all he can to obtain the athlete’s release, as soon as possible. They spoke after Biden read a letter from Griner in which she said she feared she’d never return home.

Washington hasn’t made public its strategy in the case and the United States may have little leverage with Moscow because of strong animosity due to Russia’s military actions in Ukraine. The State Department has designated Griner as wrongfully detained, moving her case under the supervision of its special presidential envoy for hostage affairs, effectively the government’s chief hostage negotiator.

Asked about the possibility of Griner being swapped for a Russian jailed in the U.S., Ryabkov, the senior Russian diplomat, noted that until her trial is over “there are no formal or procedural reasons to talk about any further steps.”

He warned that U.S. criticism, including a description of Griner as wrongfully detained and dismissive comments about the Russian judicial system, “makes it difficult to engage in detailed discussion of any possible exchanges.”

“The persistence with which the U.S. administration ... describes those who were handed prison sentences for serious criminal articles and those who are awaiting the end of investigation and court verdicts as ‘wrongfully detained’ reflects Washington’s refusal to have a sober view of the outside world,” Ryabkov snapped.

Griner's trial was adjourned after its start last week because two scheduled witnesses did not appear. Such delays are routine in Russian courts and her detention has been authorized through Dec. 20, suggesting the proceedings could last months.

Although Griner's supporters initially kept a low profile, calls for the United States to take action spiked after the trial's first day.

The Rev. Al Sharpton, one of America's most prominent Black activists, this week called for Biden to arrange a prayer meeting with Griner, saying, "Four months is too long for this to have gone on, and I hope the President acts on her pleas to come home.”

An organization called Win With Black Women sent Biden a letter saying Secretary of State Antony Blinken “has called Cherelle Griner, Brittney’s wife, assuring her and stating publicly that Brittney’s safe return was a matter of personal priority; however, we are concerned that the rhetoric does not appear to align with the actions taken to date. We urge you to make a deal to get Brittney back home swiftly.”

Russian news media have repeatedly speculated that Griner could be swapped for Russian arms trader Viktor Bout, nicknamed “the Merchant of Death,” who is serving a 25-year sentence in the U.S. on conviction of conspiracy to kill U.S. citizens and providing aid to a terrorist organization.

Russia has agitated for Bout’s release for years. But the wide discrepancy between Griner’s alleged offense and Bout’s global dealings in deadly weapons could make such a swap unpalatable to Washington.

Others have suggested that she could be traded along with Paul Whelan, a former Marine and security director serving a 16-year sentence in Russia on an espionage conviction that the U.S. has repeatedly described as a setup.

Russia has shown no signs of backing off.

“This is a serious offense, confirmed by indisputable evidence ... Attempts to present the case as if the American was detained illegally do not hold up," Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexei Zaitsev said Wednesday.

“The law has been violated, and arguments about the innocent nature of Griner’s addiction, which, by the way, is punishable in some U.S. states, are inappropriate in this case,” he said.

Report: Former Big 12 star pleads guilty in Russia drugs trial

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities investigating a fatal shooting that left&nbsp;39-year-old Louis Cantrell of Topeka dead have made an arrest.

Late Wednesday, police arrested 20-year-old Jahiem Brown and booked him into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of First Degree Murder, Aggravated assault; Use of a deadly weapon and&nbsp;Criminal possession of a firearm by a felon, according to Lt. Jerry Monasmith.

Just before 1a.m. July 5, police responded to report of a shooting in the 200 Block SE Lawrence Street in Topeka, according to Lt. Jerry Monasmith. Upon arrival, officers located Cantrell suffering from a gunshot wound. An ambulance transported him to an area hospital. 

Medical personnel pronounced him deceased, according to Monasmith.&nbsp; Police released no additional details Tuesday afternoon.

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects for their involvement in a weekend murder.

Just after 5 a.m. Saturday, sheriff's deputies were sent to a shooting call in the 4400 block of south Rock Road in rural Sedgwick County, according to Lt. Benjamin Blick.&nbsp;

At the scene, first responders found 42-year-old&nbsp;<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=20076411">David Baeza</a>&nbsp;of Wichita on the side of the road suffering from gunshot wounds, according to Colonel Brian White with the sheriff's department. EMS transported Baeza to an area hospital for treatment.

During an additional search of the rural property, deputies found a man and woman deceased in the backyard of a residence the 4300 block of South Rock Road. They died from apparent gunshot wounds.

The biggest strength of Kansas Farm Bureau (KFB) is its grassroots policy process that undergoes at least a year of debate before it’s enshrined in the organization’s policy book. This manual serves a blueprint for the advocacy work of state staff in the Kansas Legislature. In 2022, this member-driven process was crucial to improving farming, ranching and rural living during the legislative session. The success Kansas Farm Bureau had during the last legislative session will affect everyone in agriculture or living in a rural community in some fashion. Some of the wins are unlikely to be undone anytime soon and others could prove to be more fleeting without continued engagement. As of July 1, several of these polices are now laws codified in Kansas statutes. That’s proof that a group of dedicated people working toward a common goal can make the ultimate influence on the political process. Turning policy into action is not an easy endeavor, so it’s worth acknowledging when it does happen. Here are a handful of examples of how Farm Bureau members of Kansas and other likeminded organizations had an impact in Topeka: Fencing Tax Exemption:&nbsp;KFB successfully testified in support of a law the exempts fencing supplies and services from sales tax to repair fencing damaged or destroyed by natural disasters including wildfires. Those exemptions are permanent for all farmers and ranchers. Based on calculations from the Kansas Division of Budget and the Kansas State University Land Use Survey Center, this sales tax elimination will save farmers and ranchers approximately $865 for each mile of fence, a number that will grow alongside the cost of materials and labor. Funding for rural housing:&nbsp;Kansas Farm Bureau was one of nearly two dozen organizations that successfully lobbied for an investment in rural housing of more than $100 million. The money will come from the state’s extraordinary budget surplus and unspent federal COVID-19 relief funding. Included in the spending package is $40 million to spur moderate-income housing programs. An additional $20 million is dedicated specifically to rural housing. Expansion of Rural Veterinary Program: KFB supported legislation that will expand the Veterinary Training Program for Rural Kansas, addressing a shortage of veterinarians across the state. The legislation will allow more flexibility in where Kansas State University graduates can establish a practice and receive up to $25,000 per year in student loan forgiveness. The law also adds flexibility to increase the number of recipients beyond the maximum of five if funding is available. Pasture Tax fix:&nbsp;KFB successfully supported a policy change in how pastureland enrolled in the federal Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) Grasslands are classified for Kansas property tax purposes. Without this fix, land that has always been in pasture and then enrolled in the CRP was in danger of being classified as higher-value dryland farm ground for property tax purposes. Water issues:&nbsp;Kansas Farm Bureau staff testified against proposed legislation that would have consolidated the state’s water regulatory agencies because it would have increased government bureaucracy and consolidated enormous power under the control of a single political appointee, in addition to other measures that go against KFB’s policy. While the proposal was ultimately unsuccessful, it has prompted a review of KFB policy on water issues with regional meetings scheduled around the state, including July 6 in Hutchinson, July 7 in Dodge City, July 12 in Hoxie and July 14 in Burlington. INSIGHT: Putting policy into action

Today is Wednesday, July 6, the 187th day of 2022. There are 178 days left in the year.

On July 6, 1944, an estimated 168 people died in a fire that broke out during a performance in the main tent of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum &amp; Bailey Circus in Hartford, Connecticut.

In 1483, England's King Richard III was crowned in Westminster Abbey.

In 1777, during the American Revolution, British forces captured Fort Ticonderoga.

In 1854, the first official meeting of the Republican Party took place in Jackson, Michigan.

In 1885, French scientist Louis Pasteur tested an anti-rabies vaccine on 9-year-old Joseph Meister, who had been bitten by an infected dog; the boy did not develop rabies.

In 1933, the first All-Star baseball game was played at Chicago's Comiskey Park; the American League defeated the National League, 4-2.

In 1942, Anne Frank, her parents and sister entered a "secret annex" in an Amsterdam building where they were later joined by four other people; they hid from Nazi occupiers for two years before being discovered and arrested.

(Zimmerman was acquitted.)

Five years ago: The maker of opioid painkiller Opana ER said it would stop selling the drug at the request of the Food and Drug Administration in an effort to curb abuse.

One year ago: Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams won the Democratic primary for mayor of New York City, defeating a large field in New York's first major race to use ranked choice voting. Marilyn Ann Johnston passed away Saturday, July 2, 2022 at Sunset Home, Concordia at the age of 89.&nbsp; Marilyn was born April 6, 1933, to Vane and Gladys (Nelson) Schierbaum and lived on the family farm in Summit township, west of Concordia for several years before moving to Concordia where she graduated from Concordia High School.&nbsp;

Marilyn married D. Dean Johnston on April 6, 1952. They celebrated 62 years of marriage prior to his death in 2014. 

Marilyn raised five children along with the numerous pets her children dragged home. &nbsp;The children were involved in many activities and Marilyn always took time to attend every one including football games, track meets, swim meets and school programs. &nbsp;Marilyn was the “fun” mom and her home was always overflowing with her children’s friends.&nbsp; As she would say, “there is never a dull moment!”

Marilyn was employed for 45 years by Bergman Studios (later Pfuetze Bergman Studios) enjoying every aspect of photography and the photo restoration business.

Marilyn, an avid and accomplished gardener, was a generous and enthusiastic volunteer. &nbsp;Whether teaching Sunday School at The Baptist Church, working with Camp Fire Girls when her daughter was young, spending hours at the Historical Society Museum of Cloud County or leading the News Forum Group for Sunset Home residents, she was always “all in” and passionate about what she was doing. &nbsp;&nbsp;She served on the Frank Carlson Library Board, and in 2012 she received the Kaleidoscope Award from the Concordia Chamber of Commerce for the national notoriety of the museum for her discovery of the Martha Washington letter in the museum archives.&nbsp; Because of her discovery, Marilyn was thrilled to be invited and attend a personal tour of Mount Vernon given by the Mount Vernon Ladies Association.&nbsp;

Marilyn loved researching her family history and was very active aiding others in their genealogy quest.&nbsp; She loved traveling throughout the United States, visiting friends and family.&nbsp; But one of her great loves was traveling overseas, especially Scotland where she was able to do research related to her family genealogy. Most days after retiring she could be found at the museum researching or assisting with the operations of the museum.

&nbsp;Marilyn’s love for and kindness to her family and community will be greatly missed.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband D. Dean Johnston. &nbsp;

She is survived by her sister Ramona Printz Smith of Stilwell, KS; &nbsp;daughter Susan Hoppe and her husband Rick of Wichita, KS; sons Bruce and his wife Terry of Plano, TX; Mark and his wife Kathy of Concordia; Jerry and his wife Terry of Las Vegas, NV;&nbsp; and Bryce and his wife Tracey of Victorville, CA.; 11 grandchildren (Stephen, Kevin, Austin, Jamie, Trisha, Alisa, Stephanie, Rick, Mark, Colin and Heather) and 10 great-grandchildren (Mason, Landon, June, Trey, Natalie, Parker, Preston, Jocelyn, Jeremy and Emerson).

Words she lived by:&nbsp; "Your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure.&nbsp; You are loved beyond words and missed beyond measure.”&nbsp; Renee Wood

Memorial services will be Saturday, July 16, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at The Baptist Church Concordia with Pastor Jonathan Peppers and Pastor Randy Whitley officiating, with burial of the cremains immediately following at the West Branch Cemetery.&nbsp; Friends may sign the register book from 1-8:00 p.m. Friday, July 15 with the family greeting friends from 6:00-7:00 pm all at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home.&nbsp;

 </figure><a href="https://www.chaputbuoy.com/obituary/marilyn-johnston">Obituary | Marilyn Ann Johnston of Concordia, Kansas | Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home (chaputbuoy.com)</a>April 6, 1933 - July 2, 2022Marilyn Ann Johnston passed away Saturday, July 2, 2022 at Sunset Home, Concordia at the age of 89.&nbsp; Marilyn was born April 6, 1933, to Vane and Gladys (Nelson) Schierbaum and lived on the family farm in Summit township, west of Concordia for several years before moving to Concordia where she graduated from Concordia High School.&nbsp;Marilyn married D. Dean Johnston on April 6, 1952. They celebrated 62 years of marriage prior to his death in 2014. Marilyn raised five children along with the numerous pets her children dragged home. &nbsp;The children were involved in many activities and Marilyn always took time to attend every one including football games, track meets, swim meets and school programs. &nbsp;Marilyn was the “fun” mom and her home was always overflowing with her children’s friends.&nbsp; As she would say, “there is never a dull moment!”Marilyn was employed for 45 years by Bergman Studios (later Pfuetze Bergman Studios) enjoying every aspect of photography and the photo restoration business.Marilyn, an avid and accomplished gardener, was a generous and enthusiastic volunteer. &nbsp;Whether teaching Sunday School at The Baptist Church, working with Camp Fire Girls when her daughter was young, spending hours at the Historical Society Museum of Cloud County or leading the News Forum Group for Sunset Home residents, she was always “all in” and passionate about what she was doing. &nbsp;&nbsp;She served on the Frank Carlson Library Board, and in 2012 she received the Kaleidoscope Award from the Concordia Chamber of Commerce for the national notoriety of the museum for her discovery of the Martha Washington letter in the museum archives.&nbsp; Because of her discovery, Marilyn was thrilled to be invited and attend a personal tour of Mount Vernon given by the Mount Vernon Ladies Association.&nbsp;Marilyn loved researching her family history and was very active aiding others in their genealogy quest.&nbsp; She loved traveling throughout the United States, visiting friends and family.&nbsp; But one of her great loves was traveling overseas, especially Scotland where she was able to do research related to her family genealogy. Most days after retiring she could be found at the museum researching or assisting with the operations of the museum.&nbsp;Marilyn’s love for and kindness to her family and community will be greatly missed.She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband D. On May 2, 1993 a son was born to Mandi Nicole Seim. Gabriel Christian was the light of her life and she was everything to him for a short 3 years. When his mom died, our family was blessed with Gabe for 25 more years. Then on July 21, 2021 Mandi got her son back!

We will honor Gabe with a celebration of life on July 23rd, 2022 at the Assaria Community Center, 315 E Main, Assaria, KS at 4pm.

To those close friends and family who TRULY knew Gabe and his heart, please join us.

Gabe was the life of the party with a giant smile, a giving heart and a true desire to help make the lives of those he loved be the best they could be. Gabe was a true BROTHER to so many. He was pretty darn good at sports; dominoes, spades, darts and he loved to ski! Gabriel loved to read, and he was quite a poet. Oh, and we all know he had a love of shoes!! Shayne C. Greenman, age 66 of Kalispell, MT passed away peacefully at home on Friday, January 15, 2021 surrounded by family and love. She is survived by her husband Dr. Peter Greenman, mother Jean Clark, children Beecher Greenman (Irina), Jennifer MacDonald (Ross), and Julia Angibeau (Philippe), and grandchildren Lena, Ian, Emma, Lily, and Declan.

Shayne was born on February 17, 1954 in Kansas City, MO. She was a devoted daughter to Ron and Jean Clark and sister to Michael. As the family moved with the Corps of Engineers, she attended school in Missouri, Kansas, Oregon, and Montana and graduated from Libby High School in 1972. She attended Flathead Valley Community College, Wenatchee Valley Community College, and SUNY Buffalo. She worked for the U.S. Forest Service on the Yaak and in Troy, MT.

Shayne married Peter Greenman on July 8, 1978 in Chelan, WA. They spent their married life in Buffalo, NY; Olney, MD; Lacey, WA; and Fairfax Station, VA before moving to Kalispell, MT in 2007.

Shayne dedicated herself wholeheartedly to her family and faith, raising her three children and five grandchildren with love, intelligence, and strength. She felt that home was where the family was and was able to quickly re-establish our home wherever the U.S. Army and other professional moves took us. 

She was the director of the Junior Great Books reading enrichment program at Greenwood Elementary in Olney, Maryland and also volunteered enthusiastically throughout the years for swim teams, school projects and events. A favorite family memory is her time spent as a guest chef at HEC 2003 at the Cornell Hotel School. She was an active member in her congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Fairfax, VA and Kalispell, MT. She was a valued career and relationship counselor and wedding planner for the family.&nbsp;

She had a magnetic personality, a strong sense of conviction, and an infectious laugh. She had a magic touch that made everything she did special. She was an avid reader, particularly of history. She also loved movies of all types. Other interests included boating on the Chesapeake Bay and Flathead Lake, bird watching, traveling, event planning, swing dancing, sewing, and snowboarding. She collected small antiques and friends everywhere she went. 

People of all ages were drawn to her by her kindness, grace, easygoing sense of humor, and commonsense wisdom. Her courage and grace throughout her long battle with breast cancer was an inspiration to friends, family, and everyone she met along the way.&nbsp;

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 16, 2022 at Gypsum Hill Cemetery. A Celebration of life will follow at Masonic Temple.

John Paul Gunder&nbsp;passed away in his home, May 18, 2022.&nbsp; In his own words, leaving his partner of 32 years, Darlene Gebhardt, who “made his life full of love, laughter and comfort.”&nbsp; He was born September 16, 1930, to Clarence and Goldie (Harman) Gunder, in Gibsonburg, Ohio. 

He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, James Addison Gunder, Violet Rose (Gunder) Long and Iva Lena (Gunder) Anderson.

In 1949, John married Ruby Clark (deceased). They had three children, Margaret Ann ‘Micky’ (Gunder) Ovitt, Paula Joan (Gunder) Dennie and Juanita (Gunder) Spaulding.

From his marriage to Donna Mitchell Gagnon (deceased) in 1971, came his children Janice Faye Gunder, and Russel David Gunder.

Through his partnership with his best friend Darlene Gebhardt, he gained his “bonus children” James L. Gebhardt, Michael W. Gebhardt and Dianna L. Gebhardt.

John was a great supporter of his numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved them dearly, and they loved him back.&nbsp; He always had a funny word, a kind word, or a stern word to offer them when it was necessary.

John grew up on a farm in Wood County, Ohio.&nbsp; In 1947, at age 17, he joined the Army National Guard and was discharged in 1950. In 1951, he took an oath and become a member of the Ohio State Protective Association, Badge No. 42.&nbsp; He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1956 and retired in 1976 as E-7 Staff Sergeant. He did three tours in Germany and was in Viet Nam 1968-1969. He received many decorations including the Bronze Star, awarded for meritorious service or acts of valor while serving in combat operations. He also received the Purple Heart medal along with various others. He was very proud of his military service but was not boastful.

In 1980 John was a census information gatherer. He enjoyed meeting so many people and hearing their stories. John never knew a stranger.

From 1979-1991, he was the owner and operator of the Blue Lounge in Salina, KS.&nbsp; It’s here that he made many friends and had many stories to tell. &nbsp;

John lived a full life. He took motorcycle trips and liked to travel and fish. He “had been on big boats, small boats, airplanes big and little, and helicopters not to mention all the other good equipment the military had, like the smooth-riding tanks and trucks that never missed a hole in the road.”

His passions were his family, genealogy, and history. He was a collector of books and an avid reader. He gardened and cooked and loved to feed people. He had a great sense of humor and was a bit of a prankster.&nbsp; He enjoyed his coffee chats in the morning. He loved them dearly, and they loved him back.&nbsp; He always had a funny word, a kind word, or a stern word to offer them when it was necessary.John grew up on a farm in Wood County, Ohio.&nbsp; In 1947, at age 17, he joined the Army National Guard and was discharged in 1950. In 1951, he took an oath and become a member of the Ohio State Protective Association, Badge No. 42.&nbsp; He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1956 and retired in 1976 as E-7 Staff Sergeant. He did three tours in Germany and was in Viet Nam 1968-1969. He received many decorations including the Bronze Star, awarded for meritorious service or acts of valor while serving in combat operations. He also received the Purple Heart medal along with various others. He was very proud of his military service but was not boastful.In 1980 John was a census information gatherer. He enjoyed meeting so many people and hearing their stories. John never knew a stranger.From 1979-1991, he was the owner and operator of the Blue Lounge in Salina, KS.&nbsp; It’s here that he made many friends and had many stories to tell. &nbsp;John lived a full life. He took motorcycle trips and liked to travel and fish. He “had been on big boats, small boats, airplanes big and little, and helicopters not to mention all the other good equipment the military had, like the smooth-riding tanks and trucks that never missed a hole in the road.”His passions were his family, genealogy, and history. He was a collector of books and an avid reader. He gardened and cooked and loved to feed people. Charlotte Gertrude Wilhelmina (Kress) Settle, 92, of Salina, passed away July 1, 2022. She was born in Cologne, Germany August 31, 1929 to Eugene and Cacilia Kress. Charlotte met Lester during WWll in Sinsheim, Germany while he was serving in the U.S. Army. They were married at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Oakley, KS, August 5, 1947 and were married 71 years. They farmed and ranched near Winona, KS until 1999 and retired in Salina, KS.

While living in Winona, Charlotte worked at the school, drove a school bus, sold World Book encyclopedias, and worked for SRS. After moving to Salina, she worked at the local art gallery and was a greeter for Conklin Cars. She was active in the German Club and St. Mary Queen of the Universe Catholic Church. She had a compassionate conviction for the lives of unborn children and always had a strong interest in politics.

Although Charlotte grew up in the large city of Cologne,Germany, at age 17 she learned how to help on the farm but always preferred to have a fence between her and the farm animals. She tamed raccoons, dressed hundreds of chickens, canned foods, delivered milk, cream, and eggs, prepared meals for harvest crews, and nary a weed dare grow in her luscious green yard. Charlotte loved working in her home, visiting with neighbors and friends, square dancing, having card parties and entertaining. New teachers to the community always found a welcome meal, and foreign college students always found a home full of hospitality during holidays. Most of all, she enjoyed visiting her grandchildren and making the farm a fun place to visit.

Always an avid reader, Charlotte encouraged her children to read, work hard, excel in whatever they did, and make the most of opportunities. She enjoyed writing and wrote many poems and diaries throughout her life. She loved music, especially classical and German. She found great joy in playing her accordion and was happy to entertain during the German Club meetings and even at her 90th birthday celebration. Her favorite food was chocolate, especially chocolates directly from Germany. Her favorite song was Enjoy Yourself, It’s Later Than You Think.

Charlotte was preceded in death by her husband Lester. 

Survivors include her six children: Irene (Doug) Johnson of Dallas, TX, Frank (Peggy) Settle of Overland Park, Gloria (Ralph) Duffey of Salina, Harold (Rhonda) Settle of Great Bend, Roger (Theresa) Settle of Dodge City, and Janet (Patrick) Gleason of Meade;19 grandchildren: Kurt (Rae) Johnson, Adele (Uli) Woerz, Sr. Isabel (Society of Mary), Michael (Kristy) Johnson, Kipp Johnson, Robert Johnson; Craig (Blythe) Settle, Stephanie (Shawn) Turner, Kim (Nick) Bambeck; Patricia Duffey, David (Kaori) Duffey, Connie Duffey; Jason (Lundy) Settle, Chad Settle; Mary (Adam) Behlke; Adam (Liz) Gleason, Michaela (Hito) Santacruz, Aaron (Miranda) Gleason, and Monica Gleason; 29 great-grandchildren: Kressa and Max Johnson; Edward, Helena, Frederick, and Henry Woerz; Felix and Vela Johnson; Luke Johnson; Colin, Cayley, Camden, and Kinsley Settle; Austin, Ashlyn, Gabrielle, Lucas, and Frank Turner; Casey, Thomas, Caroline, and Riley Bambick; Michelle and William Duffey; Blake Kirkman, Sadie Settle; Aidan and Emma Gleason; and Isaiah Gleason.

There will be a rosary at 9 a.m. on Wednesday July 6th at St. Mary Queen of the Universe Catholic Church in Salina, KS, with Mass at 10, followed by a luncheon in the parish hall. Burial service will follow at All Saints Catholic Cemetery.

SEDGWICK COUNTY — A registered sex offender entered a guilty plea to&nbsp; murder and sex crimes in connection with his wife's death in 2020.

&nbsp;Just before his trial was to begin, Craig Johnston, 44,&nbsp; pleaded guilty last week to reckless second-degree murder, attempted rape, attempted aggravated criminal sodomy and aggravated sexual battery, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney.&nbsp;

On October 23, 2020, deputies responded to the report of an injured woman at a home in the 7900 block of West 109th in Sedgwick, according to Sheriff's Lt. Benjamin Blick.

When they arrived they found 40-year-old Amber Dawn Slankard with critical injuries.&nbsp;&nbsp;EMS transported her to Via Christi St. Francis and she later died of her injuries.

Deputies transported her husband Craig Johnston to Sheriff Investigations and later booked him on requested charges of Second Degree Murder and violations of the Offender Registration Act, according to Blick.&nbsp;

Johnston has a previous conviction from Illinois in 1997 for aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a victim between the age of 13-16, according to the Offender Registry. Johnston is scheduled to be sentenced on August 12, according to the district attorney's office.
