This week, more than 250 junior and senior high school students descended on the Great Plains Convention Hall, filled with exhibits showcasing a look into construction, manufacturing and service.&nbsp;

The <a href="https://www.salinahba.com/">Salina Area Builders Association</a> (SABA) organized the first Salina Build My Future to introduce various blue-collar careers to students interested in the trades.&nbsp;

For most trade shows, exhibitors typically bring small equipment, pamphlets of information and small take-home items, but the one requirement for exhibitors at this show was interactivity.

"The vendors were creative with what they came up with. I'm so impressed with what they brought," said SABA board member Jessica Kindlesparger. "To me, I think it's eye-opening for them to actually get hands-on experience doing those things that maybe they didn't know they would be interested in."

Kindlesparger said 260 students attended the event, with schools like Concordia High School and Salina South High School bringing large portions of their junior and senior classes.

Although 260 attendees for a first-time event is large, Kindlesparger said she expects attendance to more than double next year after hearing feedback from various schools.

Larkin, Scott City, Holcom and Beloit were a few examples Kindlesparger said showed interest in the event.&nbsp;Some schools told her they&nbsp;intended to bring their entire&nbsp;junior and senior classes next year.

At the <a href="https://www.pestingerheating.com/">Pestinger Heating and Air Conditioning, Inc</a>. booth, Master Electrician Travis Benoist presented simple motors made from copper wire and a battery.&nbsp;

At the same time, Megan Leyler, an electrician for Pestinger, introduced students to the basics of wiring a breaker box.

"Not everybody fits into this box of going to the four-year institution, so having these options anymore is critical," Benoist said. "I push for education with my workers all the time — the more educated they are, the better they understand what&nbsp;they're&nbsp;doing, and then the better they can apply those principles to their jobs."

Brian Thompson, a 17-year-old student at Salina South High School, visited the booth and tried wiring the breaker box, which he said he already had a little bit of experience by working on house construction.

"Most of the things we're doing,&nbsp;I already did a little bit," Thompson said.&nbsp;"A lot of it is kind of new, so I enjoyed it."

Many local Salina businesses and organizations presented exhibits at the event, including <a href="https://www.greatplainsmfg.com/">Great Plains Manufacturing</a>, <a href="https://www.vortex-companies.com/">Vortex</a>, the <a href="https://www.salina-ks.gov/fire-department">Salina Fire Department</a> — complete with a fire engine for students to try out the hoses — and <a href="https://www.facebook.com/PontonConstruction/">Ponton's Construction</a>.

"They [the students] started out a little timid, and now they're really intrigued," Kindlesparger said. "They're all interacting and asking questions and getting involved in all this — it's been really rewarding."

Salina Build My Future sparks interest for junior and senior high school students

Through the average gusty weather of Kansas yesterday, Thursday, April 18, members of the City of Salina Parks and Recreation staff, leaders at the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce and residents gathered to celebrate the grand opening and ribbon cutting at Oakdale Park's newest feature — full-size pickleball courts.

Stephanie Gillig, the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce events and community coordinator, introduced Jeff Hammond, the director of Salina Parks and Recreation, to present some information on the privately funded courts.

"This project was born from a generous group of individuals who sought to provide pickleball to the community," Hammond said. "Anybody can freely use them and enjoy the sport of pickleball."

The anonymous group of donors provided about $500,000 in funding for the new courts, completely covering the construction cost.&nbsp;

Previously, Hammond said the city did have makeshift pickleball courts, so the new courts at Oakdale Park are an addition to the town.&nbsp;

"We do a lot of public-private partnerships, whether it be the Field House or the tennis complex," Hammond said. "But not to this degree and for this size of project and financial commitment, it was quite extraordinary."

After the ribbon cutting, the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce offered a drawing for free pickleball equipment.&nbsp;

Some attendees began playing on the new courts to celebrate the grand opening.

Salina Area Chamber of Commerce and City of Salina celebrate grand opening of new pickleball courts

On the south side of the intersection of South Halstead Road and West Old Highway 40, a Salina resident left a red 1998 Chevrolet 1500 pickup truck on the railroad tracks.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said shortly before 12:15 a.m. this morning, a train struck the empty vehicle and reported the crash to Saline County.

"It had been parked on the tracks facing eastbound when the train came from the west and struck it from behind," Soldan said. "Deputies checked the area and located the driver."

Shortly after deputies arrived on the scene, they located 25-year-old Mackenzie Lewis, a Salina resident, around 12:38 a.m., just more than a mile away at the intersection of West Old Highway 40 and Interstate 135.

Soldan said deputies were unable to identify Lewis' reasons for parking the vehicle on the tracks but found drug paraphernalia and some methamphetamine in the truck and on Lewis. He also had no proof of insurance.

Deputies arrested Lewis and requested charges for drug possession, drug paraphernalia, parking in a prohibited place and no proof of insurance.

Train strikes parked truck, Saline County Sheriff's Office finds drugs

BY SALINA POST Information courtesy Greater Salina Community Foundation The 13th year of Match Madness proved to be “The Lucky One,” raising over $1.1 million in a single day for 100 local nonprofits, setting a new record.

On March 21, donors contributed $786,246 to 100 nonprofit endowed funds held at the Greater Salina Community Foundation for long-term support. That combined with $320,171 in matching funds and bonus prizes brought the total impact for the day to $1,106,417.

“The amount of generosity that flowed through the Fieldhouse that day blows me away,” said Jessica&nbsp;Martin, President &amp; Executive Director. “We had donations of all sizes that when added together made a big impact. That’s the definition of community.”

The event was held at the Salina Fieldhouse from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. where donors could make their donation and visit one of the 74 nonprofit booths that were set up ready to share about their mission.&nbsp;All donations were matched up to 50% in the form of an instant cash grant to the charity from a $313,000 match pool.&nbsp;

Nonprofits also had the opportunity to earn up to $130 in the Bill Grevas Minute to Win It Free Throw Contest sponsored by Bennington State Bank and $1,300 in the BE Wealth Half Court Shot contest.&nbsp;

Saline County&nbsp;5th&nbsp;Graders

This was also a record year&nbsp;for&nbsp;Saline County&nbsp;fifth graders. When Ken and&nbsp;Karen Ebert decided to sponsor the USD 305&nbsp;fifth&nbsp;graders in 2023, they hoped it would inspire others to do the same —and it did! 

Thanks to the generosity of several donors&nbsp;every&nbsp;fifth&nbsp;grader in Saline County was able to donate $10 to&nbsp;their&nbsp;favorite charity at Match Madness.&nbsp;Overall, 634 fifth graders participated, supporting 84 of the 100 charities.

One goal of taking students to Match Madness is to teach them about philanthropy and the joy of giving.

 “A small donation can make a huge difference,”said Fifth grader Blakely Chamberlain.

Blakely’s gift is also endowed meaning her $10 donation will grow to $46 in 20 years. This may not seem like a lot, but when Blakely’s donation is combined with all the 634&nbsp;fifth&nbsp;graders, their&nbsp;donation of $6,340&nbsp;will grow to $29,164&nbsp;in 20 years,&nbsp;all while making annual grants to nonprofits.&nbsp;

The day ended with a celebration and after party at the Prickly Pear from 7-11 p.m. where nonprofits, donors and Foundation&nbsp;staff watched the final numbers tally in for what really proved to be “The Lucky One!”&nbsp;

“Match Madness is always a terrific day for our community and for everyone who participates, so there is always a feeling of not wanting it to end.&nbsp; Extending the in-person giving window until 11pm at The Prickly Pear was a terrific way for everybody to continue the fun and celebrate the huge impact that donors make for our community,” said Michael Chambers, GSCF’s VP of Community Impact.

Since 2012, Match Madness has generated nearly $6 million for 112 local nonprofits.&nbsp;

 </figure>One goal of taking students to Match Madness is to teach them about philanthropy and the joy of giving. “A small donation can make a huge difference,”said Fifth grader Blakely Chamberlain.Blakely’s gift is also endowed meaning her $10 donation will grow to $46 in 20 years. This may not seem like a lot, but when Blakely’s donation is combined with all the 634&nbsp;fifth&nbsp;graders, their&nbsp;donation of $6,340&nbsp;will grow to $29,164&nbsp;in 20 years,&nbsp;all while making annual grants to nonprofits.&nbsp; Celebrating SuccessThe day ended with a celebration and after party at the Prickly Pear from 7-11 p.m. where nonprofits, donors and Foundation&nbsp;staff watched the final numbers tally in for what really proved to be “The Lucky One!”&nbsp;“Match Madness is always a terrific day for our community and for everyone who participates, so there is always a feeling of not wanting it to end.&nbsp; Extending the in-person giving window until 11pm at The Prickly Pear was a terrific way for everybody to continue the fun and celebrate the huge impact that donors make for our community,” said Michael Chambers, GSCF’s VP of Community Impact.Since 2012, Match Madness has generated nearly $6 million for 112 local nonprofits.&nbsp;

Salina Match Madness breaks fundraising record

After popping a tire on East Old 40 Highway in Saline County, a resident left their 1999 gold GMC Yukon with the keys in the ignition and found it was missing the following day.

Saline County Sheriff's Office Capt. Jim Hughes said the resident had left the Yukon in the 2500 block of East Old 40 Highway on Sunday, April 14, and when they returned the following morning around 8:30 a.m., it was gone.

"It was parked on the side of the road with some mechanical issues, specifically with a blown tire, and the keys were in the ignition, and it had a full gas tank," Hughes said.

The resident left the vehicle on the roadside to complete some work in the area.

Hughes said the Yukon had a deer decal on the back window, and its value totaled $3,000. The owner reported that the vehicle bears a Kansas tag that reads SAS662.

Resident leaves SUV on roadside Sunday evening, finds it missing the next day

<a target="_blank" href="https://www.facebook.com/SCTGUILD/?paipv=0&amp;eav=AfYXSZJ0AxyzqVt2-0AAMQDxphyHgv4mLV_WVDZuZe136othNlLZawBaJ1BdvKrDiS0&amp;_rdr">The Theatre Salina Guild</a>&nbsp;began its&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://salinatheatre.com/project/guild-flower-sale/">38th Annual Geranium and Plant Sale</a>&nbsp;last week.&nbsp;Residents and visitors can place advance orders for Calliope Dark Red, Galaxy Orange, Patriot White geraniums, and more.

On Thursday, March 14, the guild began taking orders for hundreds of geraniums and plants to raise cash for the Theatre Salina youth programs.

"Our primary goal is to raise money and we split half of what we raise directly with the Youth Education Program," said Theatre Salina Guild Vice President and Plant Sale Chair Patti Breeding. "The other half we use toward scholarships for seniors that are going on to higher education in the arts."

The creative youth also participate in the sale each year, Breeding said, with many student volunteers assisting on the in-person sale days on Friday and Saturday, April 14 and 15.

Ordering geraniums in advance costs $7.50 each, but those purchasing in person on the sale days at Theatre Salina will cost $8. The special geraniums are $10 with advance orders and purchasing in the Theatre Salina lobby.

Breeding said that for advance orders, payment for the flowers must be made on or before Friday, April 12.

This year's special geraniums are for two previous guild members, Florence Jester and Judi Dunn, and their years of service to the Theatre Salina Guild.

"We have done it for people that have passed on, but these two ladies are still with us," Breeding said. "Judy had been vice president for a number of years, and Florence had been secretary. They just stepped down this last year, so we are doing it to honor them for the years of service they provided to the guild."

Guild members also have a raffle alongside the plant sale with various local prizes. One is an arrangement of potted plants by <a href="https://sheilasgardenmarket.com/">Sheila's Garden Market</a> in Galva, a self-contained wooden water feature by a local artist, tickets to a few performances by Theatre Salina in April, and a grand prize of two season tickets to Theatre Salina.

Those interested in ordering flowers for the sale can contact a guild member at 785-643-3372. Theatre Salina Guild will have the flowers available for pick-up from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, April 14 and 15, in the Theatre Salina Lobby.

Theatre Salina Guild begins 38th Geranium and Plant Sale

What began as rescuing lost bees that tumbled from passing through semi-trailers transformed into a state-wide business for Allen and Judy Stovall, owners of <a href="https://ajhoneyfarms.com/">AJ Honey Farms, LLC</a>.

When most residents hear about "beekeeping," they first think of swaths of hives with workers buzzing about clad in white suits and puffing smoke between frames of combs. However, beekeeping is a much larger profession than just honey collection.

Allen Stovall began the profession in 2016 by saving lost bee swarms from truck stop canopies and relocating them to his and Judy Stovall's, his wife's, backyard apiary.

Judy Stovall completed the store's name, AJ Honey Farms, with her essential role established from day one.

After they collected some backyard hives, the Stovalls contacted The Land Institute to investigate honeybee research and conservation.

"They were looking for somebody to do research with bees, so our first 10 hives we went out to there [The Land Institute property], and they wanted to do silphium flowers, so that's how it started."

Today, Allen and Judy Stovall work toward not only providing raw local honey to the community but also educating and providing tools for those looking to begin their own apiaries.

"A customer gets so excited because their bees made it or he's helped them," said co-owner Judy Stovall. "At the end of the day, we want to help people because we need to have more bees."

AJ Honey Farms provides prospective beekeepers with all the gear they might need to get started, including bee suits, smokers and handmade hive boxes.

Until last year, one or both had separate jobs to continue running the business, but last year, Judy Stovall said she quit her first job to work full-time at the AJ Honey Farms store and apiary.

"It's amazing what we do, and we love what we do," Judy Stovall said. "If someone had told me 12 years ago that I would be doing this, I would've laughed and said, 'No, not happening,' and now it's amazing."

Judy Stovall focuses on selling honey and other products from the store and shipping dozens of honey bear bottles to various outlets across Kansas. 

In contrast, Allen Stovall often focuses on designing equipment and mentoring new customers.

This year, the pair added a new item for sale — honeybee hive bodies of various breeds packaged for those looking to begin their own apiaries.

"This is our first year selling bees, and we've done very well," Judy Stovall said. "We sell it all."

With almost a decade of success, the pair now focuses on growing their operations, aiming to include services like complex honey extraction and, someday, even beekeeping classes.

Allen Stovall said that for their next project, the pair plans to use some grant cash to upgrade their current honey extraction equipment to an automatic system.

"If we end up getting it, this whole area will turn into a semi-automatic extraction system to extract from the hive frames," Allen Stovall said. "Then it goes straight into a semi-automatic bottling system."

Judy Stovall added, "We also want to turn it into a training facility—we want to teach other beekeepers."

With the updated equipment, beekeepers could rent out their kitchen space for their bottling operations instead of purchasing it, and Allen Stovall plans to help them through the process.

In the distant future, the pair aim to purchase some land and transform it into a large facility to train beekeepers and research honeybees for Kansas residents and visitors.

CoCoRaHS 24-hour rain totals

A witness at a storage unit in the 1500 block of West Schilling Road reported to Salina Police Department (SPD) officers about a suspect loitering near vehicles by the storage area.

SPD Capt. James Feldman said that just after 11:30 a.m. on Friday, April 12, officers met with the witness, who reported that as he was doing some work around the storage units, he saw an unknown man lingering just outside the storage unit's fencing.

"It looked like there were multiple cars, and it looked like items had been gone through," Feldman said. "It looks like he took multiple items, including license plates, paperwork and a key from another vehicle."

The suspect had rummaged through three cars before leaving.

The witness who reported the suspicious man took a picture of him and showed it to officers, who recognized him as 62-year-old Salina resident Robert Ford.

SPD officers later located Ford between Foxboro and Royal drives in town and found some stolen items from the storage unit.

"He was taken into custody," Feldman said. "He was charged with burglary of vehicles, three counts, and criminal trespassing for being in the fenced area of the storage unit."

The witness reported that Ford had trespassed into the storage unit area, but the burglarized vehicles were outside the fence.

Lingering supercells, strong winds and possibly beneficial rain are on track for the Great Plains Monday evening, with an increased chance for a few stronger storms in north central Kansas after sundown. 

The <a href="https://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/outlook/day3otlk.html">National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Storm Prediction Center</a> (NOAA SPC) forecasts a large area of enhanced and slight risks for severe weather beginning in the High Plains and extending through most of Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and parts of Texas.

According to U.S. National Weather Service (NWS) Wichita Meteorologist Chris Jakub, the forecast data shows an increased risk for thunderstorms in central and north-central Kansas later at night.

"It's mainly going to be after dark," Jakub said. "It looks like it could have some lingering activity during the night and maybe into Tuesday morning."

Since storms will likely impact the Salina region after dark, Jakub said the chances for tornadic activity will decrease, but forecasts show other thunderstorm hazards continuing into early Tuesday morning.

Thunderstorms in north-central Kansas have the potential to form a line of storms, which could bring beneficial rain to the area.

"It's possible they [the thunderstorms] could get into a line. If that happens, it would reduce the severe weather," Jakub said. "It's a pretty good signal to bring some beneficial rain to the area because it's been quite dry."

Although Salina and nearby communities have a lower chance of seeing tornadic activity Monday evening, forecasts show damaging winds and large hail in the region.

Jakub said during severe weather events, he advises residents to keep more than two forms of receiving weather information. This could include smartphones, televisions, weather radios or other devices to connect to weather information.

The <a href="https://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/outlook/day3otlk.html">National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Storm Prediction Center</a> (NOAA SPC) forecasts a large area of enhanced and slight risks for severe weather beginning in the High Plains and extending through most of Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and parts of Texas.<figure>

Severe weather forecast for Salina region, strong storms moving into Central Plains Monday

Two young runaways from <a href="https://saintfrancisministries.org/">Saint Francis Ministries</a> caused a few spots of havoc throughout the weekend, starting with setting off a fire extinguisher in a Schwan's company truck and ending with a ditch fire.

Saint Francis Ministries reported the two boys as runaways to Salina Police Department (SPD) officers.

SPD Capt. James Feldman said the two boys, ages 13 and 16, had broken into the Schwan's company truck sometime between 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 11, and 6:30 a.m. on Friday, April 12.

"They entered it by breaking out a window," Feldman said. Once in the cab, they rummaged through it and located a fire extinguisher. They set the fire extinguisher off in the vehicle, then removed it from the truck."&nbsp;

Employees called and reported the incident to SPD at about 6:45 a.m. The total damage to the truck was $800.&nbsp;

Feldman said at the time, there were no suspects, but that changed on Sunday, April 14, after a witness reported two young boys starting a ditch fire near the 2600 block of Centennial Road.

The witness reported the fire to SPD around 10 a.m., and Salina City Firefighters assisted in subduing the flames. The fire burned a 10 feet by 4 feet area in the ditch.

"Officers began searching the area for the juveniles described by the witness, and they were located in the area," Feldman said. "The juveniles initially gave false names, but it was determined that they were runaways from Saint Francis out on West Cloud."

The boys had run away from the <a href="https://saintfrancisministries.org/residential-programs/prtf-2/">Saint Francis Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility (PRTF)</a> at 5097 W. Cloud Street near town.

Officers also found evidence that the pair had broken into Snak Attack at 1619 West Magnolia Road by shattering a window, causing $1,000 in damages while attempting to get some food. Still, Feldman said they failed to enter the business.

The ditch fire caused about $40 in damages to the Salina Airport Authority as a renter for the scorched area.

SPD officers arrested the two children with requested charges for arson, attempted burglary, obstruction, trespassing, vehicle burglary and damage to property.

Officers transported the pair to the Geary County Juvenile Division in Junction City.

SPD arrests two juveniles after small crime spree in town

Just after 8 a.m. Wednesday, April 10, a resident reported their black 1996 Kawasaki 250R motorcycle stolen from their home sometime overnight.

The resident reported to Salina Police Department (SPD) officers that the bike went missing between 10 p.m. on Tuesday, April 9, and 6 a.m. Wednesday, April 10.

"[The motorcycle is] valued at $1,000," said SPD Capt. James Feldman. "It was stolen from the residence. I can't tell you exactly if it was parked in the street, driveway or behind the house — it doesn't say."

Feldman said an unknown suspect stole the motorcycle from the residence in the 100 block of South Chicago Street in town.

SPD continues searching for further evidence of the crime, but there are no suspects at this time.

Unknown suspect steals 1996 Kawasaki motorcycle from Salina resident overnight

LIVE First Fridays returned to downtown Salina on Friday, April 9. The event opened with local artists The Sam Club Band and Cary Brinegars showcasing their talents to the community.

Brinegars showcased his Silly Line Drawings at&nbsp;Peaceful Body Wellness Retreat downtown.

"I started doing these lines because my wife was in her cancer fight, so we'd sit a lot and watch television," Brinegars said. "I started doing lines on a scrap piece of paper she was cutting off of an art project. Then it evolved into doing full sheets."

<a href="https://www.salinadowntown.org/">Salina Downtown, Inc</a>. organizes the community event on the first Friday of each month in the summertime, featuring different local artists in each show.

"I really hope Salina will come together and support these LIVE First Fridays. We need people to come and enjoy it," said Salina Downtown Executive Director Leslie Bishop. "We would love this area to really be bustling on LIVE First Fridays."

The following LIVE First Friday will be on Friday, May 3, at the City Lights Stage downtown, where Vegan Shark begins its show at 6 p.m.

Early Wednesday morning, Salina Police Department officers responded to a local business that reported more than $10,500 worth of tools stolen from a company vehicle.

SPD Capt. James Feldman said officers reported to a <a href="https://www.callabresi.com/">Callabresi Heating and Cooling</a>&nbsp;van around 8 a.m. in the 1400 block of Springfield Street.

The business had parked the van there overnight, away from the business lot just a few blocks south.

"A van had been broken into overnight, and numerous tools and a computer, but mostly tools, had been stolen, for a total of $10,620 worth of tools," Feldman said. "The window had been broken out."

Feldman said the suspect shattered the front driver's side window to gain entry and steal the tools and technology sometime between Tuesday evening, April 9 and Wednesday morning, April 10, from the company.

SPD officers continue to investigate the crime but have no suspects at this time.

Suspect breaks window of company van, steals more than $10,000 in tools

With just 63 days left before the 48th <a href="https://www.riverfestival.com/first-time/">Smoky Hill River Festival</a> kicks off, Salina Arts &amp; Humanities announced Thursday, April 11, details for the epic arts festival, scheduled for June 13-16 in Oakdale Park.&nbsp;

The festival includes many <a href="https://www.riverfestival.com/food/">new food offerings</a>, activities for kids, new roving and mainstage entertainers, <a href="https://www.riverfestival.com/art-installations/">new art installations</a>, and new artists selling their work in the art show.

"For the last 14 months, our staff and committees have been working tirelessly to prepare for the 48th annual epic arts party," said Salina Arts and Humanities Operations and Developement Manager Anna Pauscher-Morawitz . "As of 8 a.m. this morning, our website <a href="http://riverfestival.com">riverfestival.com</a> is updated with entertainers, visual artists, food, and other details of the event. Keep your eyes out for a few additions as we get a little bit closer to June."

The Festival Medallion Quest will kick off at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15, on the front steps of the Smoky Hill Museum. Arts and Humanities Commissioners will reveal the first clue for the $3,000 prize package. Twice daily, clues will be released at 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. until the Medallion is found.

The Festival Medallion Quest began as a way to bring families together and out into the landscape to celebrate the arts differently and encourage patronage of the exhibiting artists.​ Over the years, families have searched side by side, solved riddles, and endeavored to find the ever-elusive Medallion. 

The Quest has grown larger each year, and now you can feel the collective buzz in the air as the first day of the Quest draws close. It marks the official countdown to the River Festival

Friday through Sunday, the Smoky Hill River Festival is fully engaged with three stages of live entertainment, the Fine Arts and Craft Show, Artyopolis for kids, and food vendors.

Gates will open at 4 p.m. on Thursday, June 13, with 35 food booths, an art patron party, and the Festival Jam produced by S.M. Hanson Music. Festival Jam music starts at 5:45 p.m. and includes 21 bands playing for four hours.

Wristbands for the festival will go on sale starting Wednesday, May 1 through Tuesday, June 11. The cost to purchase a weekend wristband before the event is $15 and $20 at the gate. Children 11 and younger enter the festival free of charge. Daily wristbands will also be sold for $10.&nbsp;

As the featured print artist, Lori Stanziola created Festival Flow; her image shows the intersection of the river, the music, and the arts that make the Festival a special destination.

Anyone who donates $100 or more is eligible to pick up a copy at the Arts &amp; Humanities office any time before June 10 during office hours, 8 am - 5 pm.

Drawing on her experience as a designer, Lori revels in using graphic shapes and patterns to create richly layered works from hand-carved blocks.

Lori’s work is hand-printed in single or small-numbered editions, primarily using the techniques of relief printing and monotype.

 It takes about 2,000 dedicated, engaged, community-minded, and fun volunteers to make the Festival happen. "On Saturday morning of the festival at about 8:30 or 9 a.m. people will begin to line up at the Mulberry Bridge because it is the shortest distance from that entryway to the First Treasurers tent where kids get to, in some cases, purchase their first work of art," said Brad Anderson, director of Salina Arts and Humanities.&nbsp;

How does a child participate in First Treasures?

Entry-window tickets become available at the First Treasures tent at 10:00 am on Saturday of the festival. Supply depends on the number of artworks provided and, therefore, is limited in quantity.&nbsp;

"As of 8 a.m. this morning, our website <a href="http://riverfestival.com">riverfestival.com</a> is updated with entertainers, visual artists, food, and other details of the event.  </figure><h2>Medallion Quest</h2>The Festival Medallion Quest will kick off at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15, on the front steps of the Smoky Hill Museum. Arts and Humanities Commissioners will reveal the first clue for the $3,000 prize package. Twice daily, clues will be released at 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. until the Medallion is found.The Festival Medallion Quest began as a way to bring families together and out into the landscape to celebrate the arts differently and encourage patronage of the exhibiting artists.​ Over the years, families have searched side by side, solved riddles, and endeavored to find the ever-elusive Medallion. The Quest has grown larger each year, and now you can feel the collective buzz in the air as the first day of the Quest draws close. It marks the official countdown to the River Festival<figure>

 </figure>Friday through Sunday, the Smoky Hill River Festival is fully engaged with three stages of live entertainment, the Fine Arts and Craft Show, Artyopolis for kids, and food vendors.Gates will open at 4 p.m. on Thursday, June 13, with 35 food booths, an art patron party, and the Festival Jam produced by S.M. Hanson Music. Festival Jam music starts at 5:45 p.m. and includes 21 bands playing for four hours.<figure>

 </figure><h2>Wristband Information</h2>Wristbands for the festival will go on sale starting Wednesday, May 1 through Tuesday, June 11. The cost to purchase a weekend wristband before the event is $15 and $20 at the gate. Children 11 and younger enter the festival free of charge. Daily wristbands will also be sold for $10.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.riverfestival.com/participating-retailers/">Wristbands will be available at around 40 local and 20 regional retailers</a> and the Salina&nbsp;	 Arts &amp; Humanities office, 211 W.  </figure><h2>Volunteer Opportunities</h2>Salina Arts and Humanities is looking for groups and individuals to be part of this summer’s Epic Arts Party at the Smoky Hill River Festival inOakdale Park. The search for volunteers is a high priority. It takes about 2,000 dedicated, engaged, community-minded, and fun volunteers to make the Festival happen. Volunteers work all over the Festival on crews to support Festival staff, fans, sponsors, and artists to ensure everyone at the Festival has an unforgettable, exciting, fun, and safe time! Young art enthusiasts, ages 4 to 13, can choose original artwork from River Festival artists at affordable prices of $5 or less.&nbsp;"On Saturday morning of the festival at about 8:30 or 9 a.m. people will begin to line up at the Mulberry Bridge because it is the shortest distance from that entryway to the First Treasurers tent where kids get to, in some cases, purchase their first work of art," said Brad Anderson, director of Salina Arts and Humanities.&nbsp;<h2>How does a child participate in First Treasures?</h2>Entry-window tickets become available at the First Treasures tent at 10:00 am on Saturday of the festival. Supply depends on the number of artworks provided and, therefore, is limited in quantity.&nbsp;Children can then meet their Festival artists on the grounds. If a child needs additional assistance in the tent or with check-out, please inform staff when you pick up their entrance time card.<figure>

The event includes a two-mile walk, children’s races, and a two-mile and five-mile electronically timed race. The Smoky Hill River Festival, the Horizons Grants Program, the Smoky Hill Museum, and the Arts Infusion program are among the programs of this City of Salina division.Smoky Hill River Festival:&nbsp;Connecting people through an arts experience celebrating the creative spirit.The mission of&nbsp;Salina Arts &amp; Humanities&nbsp;is the cultivation of this place through the power of the arts and humanities to change lives and build community.&nbsp;In 1976, a downtown Street Fair was held during Salina’s Bicentennial celebration. The event was such a hit that plans were soon underway to move the specially built gazebo to be part of the first-ever Smoky Hill River Festival, held in Oakdale in Park June 1977.The River Festival added elements during its first 10 years, including a Fun Run, a children’s Art Participation area, a park-and-ride shuttle service, and the popular Festival Jam concert. The Mamas and the Papas headlined on Saturday night in June 1987, and the Big Band Dance began that year.The festival’s second decade included expansion of the Fine Arts Show and Four Rivers Craft Market, Curt Krob’s popular, large-scale sand sculptures, and site-specific Artists In Action installations across the park. Festival Buttons were $4.The Oakdale Stage was built. In 1985, the Kenwood Bridge and the Bi-Center entrance bridges were opened.During the ‘90s and into the new millennium,&nbsp;the Storytelling Stage was born, as was First Treasures, to develop young art collectors. The tented Stage II was first created in the mid-90s.&nbsp;An Arts Patron program began, featuring a Saturday morning breakfast in the Park’s formal garden. In 2000, Salina’s Community Art &amp; Design Program (CAD) was launched for the Festival’s 25th year. Its first public art piece was “Under a Canopy Of Hope” for the Salina Animal Shelter.&nbsp;The Eric Stein (Main) Stage was dedicated in 2006.Since 2010, the River Festival has evolved by combining its two art shows and re-envisioning the&nbsp;PREMIERE&nbsp;art-patron party and program. “Dream Dragon Bridge” and other icon Art Installations were unveiled, and in 2014, the SHRF Legacy Fund endowment was born. Among popular stage acts of the decade were Steep Canyon Rangers, That1Guy, Jakubi, and Larkin Poe.
