Coyote men's tennis defeats John Brown University

Kansas Wesleyan men's tennis got its first win of the season on Saturday morning as the Coyotes defeated John Brown University 4-3 inside Genesis Health Club.

Overnight rain and strong winds forced the match indoors at Genesis.

The Coyotes would sweep the doubles flights to earn the doubles point. Bryce Ware (FR/Amarillo, Texas) and Garrison Wright (FR/Maize, Kan.) beat Hudson Dick and Woody Woodring 6-2; Alex Sherer (FR/Rossville, Kan.) and Wes Robertson (SO/Edmond, Okla.) beat Logan Wheeler and Blake Cunningham 6-2; and Rodrigo Vera (SR/Lima, Peru) and Braeden Lewis (FR/Edmond, Okla.) beat Carson Thoma and Isaac Jordan 6-0.

The match would come down to the singles matches.

Sherer would come away with a 4-0, 4-1 match in over Wheeler at No. 2; Hudson Dick for John Brown would beat Ware 4-1, 2-4, 10-7 to even the singles matches. John Brown then won at No. 3 as Woodrng beat Wright 5-3, 5-4.

The Coyotes then came through with wins at No. 5 as Vera beat Jordan 4-0, 4-2; and Robertson beat Thoma 4-0, 4-3.

John Brown would win at No. 6 as Cunningham beat Francisco Velasquez (SO/Arkansas City, Kan.) 1-4, 4-1, 10-5.

A match against Hastings was canceled Saturday afternoon after inclement weather moved into the area, and the indoor courts were not available.

KWU returns to action starting Wednesday in Orlanda, Florida against Aquinas (Mich.). KWU will play five matches in Orlando before returning home to face Texas Wesleyan on March 18.
