Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid Quotes

OPENING STATEMENT: “Alright as far as injuries go, Isaiah Moore we know about, Kadarius (Toney) you know about,(Tershawn) Wharton you know about. The ones today, (Drue) Tranquill strained his neck, (Jody) Fortson hurt his shoulder,we’re going to check it out here, then (Mike) Danna strained his calf. But all in all, it was good work today, guys challenged themselves. A little shorter practice, an hour 40-minute practice. The guys worked it, was good to get them back in pads and working to challenge each other. With that time’s yours.”

Q: First day of pads. Can you feel that energy go up?

REID: “Yeah, oh yeah. Naturally it does that so – I like the way they did it, how they got after each other, yeah.”

Q: You like when they ramp up, but we saw some conversations after plays where Travis Kelce was involved. How do you manage being amped up but not going too hard?

REID: “Yeah, you know, fighting is a waste of time. You get thrown out of games doing it, you get hurt out here doing it. But they’re going to jaw, it’s hot, humid, they’re going to jaw a little bit – just as long as there are not punches thrown, we’re alright. They’re going to talk a little bit, that happens.”

Q: What are your thoughts on how your two new tackles JawaanTaylor and Donovan Smith are doing?

REID: “They did pretty good. It’s a challenge mentally and physically for them being new and then going through the practice like this. Not always used to that but I thought they hung in there pretty good yeah.”

Q: Isiah Pacheco got some work in pads today, how long before he’s 100% full go?

REID: “We’ll just see. We’re taking that day-by-day just see how it goes. No setbacks, that’s what we’re looking for. But he’s feeling pretty good we’ll just see how it rolls, take it slow.”

Q: Are any guys sticking out to you on the first day with pads?

REID: “No, they all did a pretty good job. I can’t pick one out, they might not show up tomorrow if I pick just one, might only be coaching one guy.”

Q: How have you seen Justyn Ross adjusting in this camp?

REID: “He’s getting better every day. This will be good for him with the pads on. He’s such a big kid, tall kid, the ability to go up and get the ball that type of stuff will benefit him.”

Q: Do you have any impressions on Matt Bushman and DenericPrince?

REID: “Yeah both doing good. (Matt) Bush (Bushman) is playing tight end and working hard, he’s competing. Good route runner, real good route runner, knows what he’s doing there. He’s going to continue to work on the run game part but that’s what he’s doing. And then (Deneric) Prince it’s just a matter of staying on top of everything. It’s new to him, protections are always for the rookie running backs a thing you have to learn, but he’s such a hard worker, great hands, looked like he had great vision in the nine on seven run game.”

Q: What did John Ross say before he left?

REID: “He didn’t say much. He just was tired of it and I’m sure there was some frustration there, but he’ll be fine, he’s a sharp kid, he’ll make it somewhere.”

Q: Earlier in the week we heard Trey Smith was excited for pads because he likes to hit people. What did you see from him today?

REID: “No he’s always ready to hit somebody. He’s a tough kid and I thought he did a good job. He had a couple where his hands got out but he’s just going to keep those in tight. It’s good to have the officials out here helping us with all of that. So they hear from the officials, that’s even different than hearing it from a coach. He does a good job, hard worker.”

Q: You’ve had Willie Gay here for a while. How have you seen him progress over the years?

REID: “I like the way he’s stepped up the last couple years here. He’s got the defense down and a phenomenal athlete, great athlete, loves to play, brings great energy.”

Q: The first year can be tough, how’s Rashee Rice getting the offense and how did he look playing in pads?

REID: “Yeah sure sharp kid, tremendous talent. This is all new to him. When you’re a rookie receiver, you come in here, and you’re running miles. So, you got to get used to that and the pace. There’s no play off, there’s no back side, you have to go 100 miles per hour. So, he’s learning that, but he’s willing and he works hard and the quarterbacks like him. He’s doing a good job.”

Q: On Skyy Moore’s performance so far this year.

REID: “Yeah, he’s doing a nice job. Skyy’s tough, he’s good after the catch, got good hands, good route runner. He worked a lot with Pat (Mahomes) in the offseason so, solid.”

Q: Have you heard from Chris Jones in the last few days?

REID: “I haven’t no, no.”

Q: Any expectation on when he might come?

REID: “Don’t know. We’re moving fast and furious even though he’s not here.”

Q: You talked about Bryan Cook stepping up and being a voice during the offseason. How did he look on the first day of pads?

REID: “Yeah, he’s done a nice job. Both he and (Justin) Reid, both their games have picked up. We saw that latter part of the season with both of them, we saw it during the OTAs and I’m sure that’ll continue here. He’s doing a nice job.”

Q: You’re one of the father figures in football. I’m not saying you’re old, but you’ve also coached in college. The situation at Northwestern with the hazing, I know rookies carry the guys’ pads and everything, but when does it go too far and how do you keep it from that?

REID: “Yeah, we talk about it, I don’t hide it from them. We let the guys get in front of the line and carry helmets, but past that there’s no physical stuff. Those days are gone so can’t mess around with that.”

Q: Are you surprised to hear that there are players that think that would help the team?

REID: “Yeah, I’m a big (Former Northwestern Football Head Coach Patrick) Fitz (Fitzgerald) fan. I’ve had a lot of players come from there that have been tremendous, (New York Giants Offensive Coordinator) Mike Kafka being one of them and the parts of his program that I knew it was tremendous. So I have a lot of respect for him, whatever – I don’t know the situation, I don’t know what’s real and not real.”
