The Abilene Cowgirls and Chapman Lady Irish will square off on Tuesday in the second installment of one of the oldest rivalries in the area.

Chapman got the better of the Cowgirls in a 44-40 dogfight earlier this season and will need every bit of that energy to sweep the season series in Abilene tonight.

"That first game was a battle, as all great rivalries should be,” Irish head coach Michael Wahlmeier said. “They have a really smart coach and will definitely play with confidence.

Chapman will enter the final game of their regular season at 7-12 while Abilene comes in looking for their first win since January at 3-16.

“As far as standings in substate go, it’s not critical but we would definitely like to end the regular season on a positive note,” Wahlmeier said. “You tend to remember lasts and for our seniors to beat Abilene in their last meeting would be a great memory.”

That senior core has been at the heart of Chapman’s season as the Lady Irish have completely turned the ship around after last year’s disastrous 1-17 campaign.

“I think we’ve finally established an identity,” he said. “We know we aren’t going to score in the 50s or 60s so focusing on the defensive end of the floor has been crucial. We can’t let our frustrations about offense affect our defense. Players have accepted their roles and when we play to our strengths we’re a dang good team.”

While the Cowgirls have had their fair share of struggles recently, they have kept games close against tough opponents like Wamego.

“Abilene has had some tough battles and has done a better job than us of not letting teams run away with a victory,” Wahlmeier said. “They are always prepared and will be ready to compete tonight.”

For Chapman, the battle on the glass will be a critical one tonight against an Abilene team that doesn’t lack for size.

“We must rebound the ball,” he said. “We have given up way too many offensive rebounds over the last few games. I’m confident in the other parts of our game so if we can focus on controlling the boards I like our chances.”

Tip-off between the Cowgirls and Lady Irish is set for 6 pm at Abilene High School with the boy’s game to follow at 7.
