K-STATE OPENS SEASON VS. NEW ORLEANS TUESDAY

K-State officially opens the 121st season of men’s basketball on Tuesday night when the Wildcats play host to New Orleans (0-0) at Bramlage Coliseum. The game will tip off at 7 p.m., CT on ESPN+. It will be the first of four consecutive home games to start the 2024-25 season.This will be just the second meeting between the two schools and the first since the Wildcats posted a 62-47 win over the Privateers on Dec. 4, 1999. K-State is 12-1 all-time vs. teams from the Southland Conference, including 11-0 at home.

LAST TIME OUTJunior guard Brendan Hausen led four Wildcats in double figures with a game-high 15 points, as K-State ran its home exhibition winning streak to 30 games with a 70-56 win over Division II Fort Hays State on Oct. 29 before 9,526 fans at Bramlage Coliseum.K-State led from start to finish despite a spirited effort from Fort Hays State, which is coming off a 23-win season and was recently ranked No. 16 in the preseason NCAA Division II Coaches poll. The Wildcats led by as many as 20 points early in the second half before the Tigers cut the lead in half with 8:24 to play. However, an 8-2 run capped by a 3-pointer from senior Coleman Hawkins pushed the lead back out to 60-44 with less than 6 minutes left and it never dipped below 12 points.

KEY STORYLINES

  1. K-State is 93-27 all-time in season openers dating back to the first season in 1903, including an 81-10 mark at home. The Wildcats have a 29-3 record in openers played at Bramlage Coliseum, which includes a 16-game winning streak from 1995-2012. The losses came in 1993, 2013 and 2020.
  2. K-State has won 18 of its last 21 season openers with home losses to Northern Colorado in 2013 and Drake in 2020 before last season’s 82-69 loss to No. 21/22 USC in the Hall of Fame Series Las Vegas event at the T-Mobile Center. The Wildcats could never get on track offensively against the Trojans, connecting on just 31 percent (22-of-71) from the field, including 25 percent (9-of-36) in the first half. Senior Tylor Perry led the way with 22 points, while current senior David N’Guessan added his first career double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds) as a Wildcat.
  3. Head coach Jerome Tang is 1-1 in season openers, as the Wildcats successfully opened his tenure with a dominant 93-59 win over UTRGV at home on Nov. 7, 2022.
  4. The Wildcats have been impressive at Bramlage Coliseum under Tang, posting a 29-4 mark with just one non-conference loss (Nebraska in 2023) in that span. Last season, the team went 15-3 at home (14-3 at Bramlage Coliseum) with losses to the Huskers, Oklahoma and TCU.
  5. K-State welcomes 11 newcomers in 2024-25, including one of the nation’s best transfers classes with 8 Division I transfers, a NJCAA Division II All-American and a Division II walk-on. 
  6. New Orleans, under new coach Stacy Hollowell, returns 4 lettermen, including 2 starters.

NOTES ON NEW ORLEANS

  1. Led by first-year head coach Stacy Hollowell, New Orleans returns 3 lettermen, including a pair of starters, from a squad that posted a 10-23 record, including a tie for eighth place in the Southland Conference standing with a 4-14 mark.
  2. New Orleans returns starters Jamond Vincent (8.4 ppg., 5.7 rpg.) and Jah Short (6.3 ppg., 3.5 rpg.), along with reserve Omarion Henry (3.4 ppg., 1.6 rpg.). Vincent led the team with 3 double-doubles in 2023-24, connecting on 42.7 percent from the field and 71.2 percent from the free throw line. Short started 17 games a year ago, hitting on 46.7 percent from the field and 64.8 percent from the line. Henry is expected to return this season after suffering an injury during summer workouts.
  3. In addition to the 3 returners, the Privateers welcome 8 transfers and 4 true freshmen in 2024-25. James White (Ole Miss/UAB), Kerwin Prince (South Plains College), JR Jacobs (Walters State CC) and MJ Thomas (Link Year Prep) are notable among the newcomers.
  4. New Orleans is led by Mandeville, La., native Stacy Hollowell, who spent 8 seasons building a NAIA powerhouse at Loyola New Orleans, leading the school to a 166-78 record and the 2022 NAIA National Championship.

LAST GAME OUT

  1. New Orleans played one public exhibition to start the season, losing in overtime to Southern Miss, 105-102 on Oct. 22 at home. The Privateers had 5 players scored in double figures, along with a pair of double-doubles. Senior guard James White led the team with 23 points and 12 rebounds, while fellow senior Kerwin Prince added 19 points and 10 boards.
  2. UNO scored its 102 points on 42.9 percent (33-of-77) shooting, which included 54 points in the paint and 20 second-chance points. The team shot 41 free throws, making 30, and turned the ball over just 9 times.

FAMILIAR FACE

  1. New Orleans assistant coach Javan Felix played 4 seasons at Texas, where he played in 132 games with 78 starts for head coaches Rick Barnes and Shaka Smart from 2013-16. He went 4-5 vs. K-State as a Longhorn, winning the last 4 meetings. Upon his graduation, he played professionally in Croatia as well as in the G-League with the Thunder and Lakers.

‘CATS PICKED 8TH IN BIG 12 POLL; HAWKINS NAMED CO-NEWCOMER

  1. K-State was picked eighth in the new 16-team Big 12 preseason poll, while senior transfer Coleman Hawkins was named the league’s co-Newcomer of the Year, alongside Baylor’s Jeremy Roach.
  2. Hawkins is the first Wildcat to be selected as the Preseason Big 12 Newcomer of the Year and the fourth to be chosen for a preseason player honor, joining Michael Beasley (2007-08 Preseason Big 12 Freshman of the Year), Jacob Pullen (2010-11 Preseason Big 12 Player of the Year) and Dean Wade (2018-19 Preseason Big 12 Player of the Year).
  3. Hawkins, who earned All-Big Ten honors at Illinois in 2023-24, was also selected to the preseason All-Big 12 Second Team by the league coaches, joining Baylor’s Norchad Omier and Roach, Iowa State’s Keshon Gilbert and Kansas’ Dajuan Harris Jr.
  4. Hawkins is also the first Wildcat to earn selection to one of the main preseason all-conference teams by the coaches since Barry Brown Jr. and Wade in 2018-19. He is one of eight players in school history to be chosen for preseason all-conference honors dating to Manny Dies in 1998-99. Others include Pullen and Curtis Kelly in 2010-11, Rodney McGruder in 2012-13 and Marcus Foster in 2014-15.
  5. K-State received 133 points to place eighth in the poll, just two points behind seventh-place Texas Tech and 17 points ahead of ninth-place BYU.
  6. Kansas was picked first with 215 points and nine first-place votes followed closely by Houston (211, five first-place votes), third-place Iowa State (194, one first-place vote), fourth-place Baylor (185) and fifth-place Arizona (179, one first-place vote).
  7. Hawkins has also been named to the watch list for the Naismith Trophy as well as the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award.

SUCCESS IN NON-CONFERENCE PLAY

  1. K-State has posted a 181-56 (.764) record in non-conference play since the 2006-07 season. During that span, the Wildcats have a 142-16 (.899) mark at home venues (includes games played at Bramlage Coliseum, INTRUST Bank Arena in Wichita and the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City) in non-conference play, including a 126-13 (.907) mark at Bramlage Coliseum.
  2. K-State’s 12-1 non-conference mark in 2022-23 was the best since the 2009-10 team went a program-best 13-1. Last season, the team went 10-3 in non-conference play, including 7-1 at Bramlage Coliseum.
