NEW ORLEANS, La. - In one of the few non-changes among the top-10 this week, the Cloud County Community College women's and men's track and field teams were able to hold their ground in the number one and number two spots, respectively, in the latest edition of the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association Top-25 polls released on Wednesday.
Another week atop the poll for the Cloud County women saw CCCC come in this week's ranking with a computer-generated total of 431.29 points to hold a 146.55 point lead over second-ranked Iowa Central Community College. Only three teams in the top-10 hold the same ranking from last week's rankings, with the number two through number eight spots all changing teams from the previous poll. CCCC will be joined by four other top-10 teams and 10 teams inside the top-25 at this weekend's NJCAA Region VI/Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Championships in what is setting up to be a final opportunity to add any additional national qualifying marks ahead of the NJCAA Indoor National Championships. If Cloud County were to win the women's NJCAA Region VI Indoor Championships, it would be their first Region VI title on the women's side in 40 years with the last Region VI title coming in 1981 under then-coach Laureli Kitchener.
In the men's poll, Cloud County would see their computer-generated score drop from 309.69 points down to 293.90 points, but still hold a nearly 54-point lead over third-ranked South Plains College in what is shaping up to a five-team race in a few weeks at the National Championship meet. Iowa Central continues to hold down the top-spot by coming in this week with 414.96 points as only the number one, two, six, and 10 ranked positions are still held by the same team as last week's poll. Things are expected to be just as competitive this weekend in Pittsburg for the men's edition of the NJCAA Region VI/KJCCC Championships as the T-Birds lead a pack of five teams ranked inside the top-10 and 11 teams inside the top-20 as a total of 12 KJCCC schools are ranked inside the top-25 this week. CCCC will be looking for a third-straight NJCAA Region VI Indoor title, and a fourth-straight Region VI Track title this weekend.
