Salina Shares

After years of inspirational leadership, Founder and Executive Director, Debbie Rivers has announced her upcoming retirement effective at the end of 2026.

Under her leadership, Salina Shares has grown from a God-inspired idea into a trusted community organization commonly recognized for its Random Acts of Kindness and Free Laundry Program, Sharing the Load (formerly Laundry Love).

As part of this announcement, Debbie has shared a personal letter reflecting on the organization's history, expressing appreciation to the many individuals who helped advance its mission, and looking ahead with confidence.

The following is a letter written by Rivers:

Fourteen years ago, I could not have imagined that a Random Acts of Kindness party would turn into a non-profit organization. If you know my story, you know that was never my plan or goal. However, God has continually opened doors for us in our community and blessed our efforts to create a sustainable ministry through Salina Shares.

Salina Shares is the overflow of my heart. It began as my personal endeavor to make my excess someone else’s provision, to do my best to bless those who may be forgotten and to be as generous to others as God has been to me. I had no idea that a desire to be kind and generous would resonate with so many people.

On December 31, I will be stepping down from the day-to-day leadership as Executive Director of Salina Shares to devote time to other areas of my life and to take the time to write the story of Salina Shares.

I am beyond grateful for the trust and the relationships that our community has extended to me and the privilege of being part of something that truly matters.

Salina Shares is in good hands. We always knew my replacement would not be someone we advertised for. I trusted that when it was time for me to step aside, God would provide the right person, and He did. Beginning in 2027, Katie Schneider will serve as the Executive Director, and I have full confidence in her leadership. Katie has been involved in Salina Shares in one way or another since 2015. She has a heart after God and a heart of compassion for people.

Of course, Salina Shares is a big piece of my heart so I will remain as a consultant to the Board and continue to do most of the speaking engagements. I will help with “Sharing the Load”, the Thanksgiving meal and the Christmas store as needed. My grandchildren and I will probably be embarking on more Kindness Adventures than ever!

Thank you for believing in Salina Shares and all that we do. Thank you for your support and encouragement through the years.  We cannot do what we do without you.

Gratefully,

 Debbie Rivers

Looking Ahead

"I am honored to build upon the incredible foundation Debbie has created," Schneider said. "The Salina community and our dedicated volunteers have and always will be essential to our ability to serve our neighbors. I look forward to working to continue to expand our impact of service to Salina for years to come."

A Retirement Celebration for Debbie will take place in October with specifics to be released closer to the date.
