WINFIELD – Mother Nature wasn't going to win this time.
After losing games all last week, and having the start of the series with Southwestern pushed back two days, due to inclement weather, the Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes finally stepped on the field to face the Moundbuilders on Sunday at Broadway Recreation Complex.
Wesleyan would sweep Sunday's doubleheader, winning the opener 4-2 and the second 10-3.
KWU played its first games not at Dean Evans Stadium in nearly six weeks, since January 29, in the series. The Coyotes had played their last 21 at home, and were scheduled to play York at Evans Stadium last Tuesday due to a field issue at York, but an unplanned snowstorm forced the postponement of the game, and a second weather system pushed back the weekend series with Southwestern as well.
Trent Dewyer (JR/Albuquerque, N.M.) tossed a gem in the opener holding the Moundbuilders to two runs, only one earned on six hits while striking out 11 in seven innings of work, striking out the side in the seventh.
Wesleyan got two in the top of the first inning, taking advantage of a pair of Southwestern errors. Haydn Brown (SR/Gardnerville, Nev.) led off with a walk, followed by a catcher's interference error to put Dustin Sipe (JR/Aztec, N.M.) aboard. Robbie Keener (FR/Abilene, Kan.) then reached on another Southwestern error which brought in the first run.
Reece Bishop (SO/Colorado Springs, Colo.) plated the second run of the frame on a sacrifice fly to put the Coyotes ahead.
Southwestern got a run back in the bottom of the inning, but the Coyotes added single tallies in the second and third innings. Brown singled to drive in Jalen Jones (SO/Katy, Texas) in the second and Josh Sandoval (SR/Glendale, Ariz.) drove in Keener in the third with a single.
Josh Sandoval had two of KWU's six hits in the game. Spencer Foley (JR/Lancaster, Calif.) pitched the eighth and Ryan Sandoval (JR/El Paso, Texas) picked up his third save, tossing a hitless ninth with two strikeouts.
Branden Voytko (JR/El Paso, Texas) dominated the game on the mound for the Coyotes in the second contest as KWU came away with a 10-3 win.
Voytko took a no-hitter two outs into the fifth inning and held Southwestern to only two hits heading into the bottom of the seventh, where he picked up two outs before exiting.
Wesleyan plated two in the second after Diego Fisher (JR/Hollister, Calif.) led off with a single. Jarrett Gable (JR/Colleyville, Texas) singled to score Fisher, and Josh Sandoval followed with a sacrifice fly to score Yealex Lopez-Torres (JR/Arecibo, Puerto Rico).
The Coyotes added three more in the third. William Dryburgh (SR/St. Joseph, Mo.) led off the inning with a single, then Brown homered. Two batters later, Fisher hit a solo homer to put the Coyotes up 5-0.
Wesleyan blew the game open in the top of the seventh, scoring five times. Brown got the rally started with a single. Reece Bishop drove in two with a single and Lopez-Torres drove in a run with a hit. Sandoval then reached on an error with two outs that allowed two more runs to score for the Coyotes.
Southwestern got all three of its runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Fisher had three hits, while Dryburgh, Brown, Bishop and Gable all had two each. Alex Duarte (SO/Imperial, Calif.) got the final out in the seventh on the hill.
The two teams meet again on Monday at 2 p.m. to finish the series. KWU then hosts York on Tuesday at 3 p.m., ahead of the weekend series at Friends.
