
CONCORDIA – Opening the game on a 26-0 run, the Cloud County Community College women's basketball team would never trail in a 65-41 drubbing of Allen County Community College inside of Arley Bryant Gymnasium on Wednesday.
Winners of three of their last four, Cloud County improves to 7-6 overall and 6-6 in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference while the Red Devils fall to 1-15 overall and 1-13 in the KJCCC.
CCCC would waste no time jumping out to an early lead, getting a Derin Akdeniz three on their opening possession before getting a Le'Yanna McGinnis layup and pair of Rori Cox free throws to go up 7-0 in the opening 2:44 of the game. Things would continue to be all T-Birds throughout the rest of the opening quarter as four of five starters for Cloud County would get into the scoring column along with Branda Boakye as the score would stand at 17-0 after 10 minutes of action.
The game-opening run by the T-Birds would carry over into the second period as three McGinnis buckets along with a Cox triple would cap off what would become a 26-0 run as Allen would finally manage to get on the board with an Adji Mbaye free throw with 6:30 left in the first half. CCCC would go on to score the next six points and eight of the next 11 as Cloud County would go into the locker room up 38-12 at the break.
A 6-0 run by Cloud County to open up the second half would give Cloud County their largest lead of the contest at 44-12 with 7:12 remaining in the period as the Red Devil offense would start to find open shots. ACCC would use a 9-0 run to get the CCCC lead back down to 23 at 44-21 before seeing the T-Birds close the quarter out on an 8-2 run to hold a 52-23 lead going to the fourth.
With the game in hand, Cloud County would see Allen use another run to cut into the lead as the Red Devils would score 12 of the first 14 points of the third quarter to put things at a 56-21 T-Bird lead with 7:02 left in the game. 10 of the final 16 points in the contest however would be scored by CCCC as ACCC would get no closer the rest of the way in a game that Cloud County led wire-to-wire.
Holding an advantage in just about every stat category on the evening, Cloud County would finish the game by shooting 34.7 percent (25-of-72) from the field and 12-of-15 (80.0 percent) from the free-throw line. CCCC would also turn 32 Red Devil turnovers into 27 points while also holding a 38-22 advantage in points in the paint.
Coming off her first career KJCCC Division I Women's Basketball Player of the Week, McGinnis would finish with a game-high 26 points while also grabbing five rebounds and recording one steal. Cox would join McGinnis in double-figures with 11 points and eight steals while Kennedy Becker would finish with nine points and nine rebounds.
What's next?
The T-Birds will play host to Cowley College for a Saturday afternoon matinee beginning at 2 p.m. on Saturday. After starting the year 9-4, Cowley has lost two straight games including an 89-75 home loss to number-six ranked Butler Community College on Wednesday night.
