⚾️ Thomason Delivers Again as Wind Surge Top RoughRiders, 9-8

FRISCO, Texas — The Wichita Wind Surge (22-25) took game two of a six-game series with a 9-8 win over the Frisco RoughRiders (24-23) Wednesday night at Riders Field behind an outstanding start from Riley Quick and multi-hit performances from Marek Houston, Kyle DeBarge and Jay Thomason.

Thomason played the hero once again, delivering the go-ahead RBI in the top of the ninth for the second consecutive game. Thomason reached base in all five of his plate appearances and notched his ninth multi-hit effort of the season. DeBarge matched his Double-A high with three RBIs and recorded his 19th multi-hit performance of the season. Houston also collected two hits for his 16th multi-hit game of the year and second straight. Garrett Spain extended his on-base streak to 10 games and blasted his 22nd home run of the season, three shy of the franchise record.

On the mound, Quick was the standout, setting a Double-A high with eight strikeouts, including six through the first two innings. The first-round pick out of Alabama finished his outing allowing one run on just two hits over a Double-A-high 4 1/3 innings. The Wichita pitching staff also reached a milestone, recording its 50th game with double-digit strikeouts this season.

THE RUNDOWN

The Wind Surge opened the scoring in the top of the first, getting a leadoff single all the way to third base after an errant pickoff attempt before Kendle drove in a run with an RBI double. DeBarge followed with a two-run single to give Wichita a 3-0 lead after the opening frame.

Quick started things on the hill for Wichita and was locked in early, striking out the side in a scoreless first inning.

The Wind Surge kept the scoring going in the top of the second, using a pair of singles and a double to drive in a run and extend their advantage to 4-0.

Quick continued mowing hitters down in the second, once again striking out the side while fanning five consecutive batters.

Frisco got on the board in the bottom of the third, using a walk, a single and a wild pitch to plate its first run of the game. Wichita led 4-1 after three.

The Surge added to their lead in the top of the fifth, as Kendle walked and stole a pair of bases before coming home on an RBI groundout from DeBarge.

Quick finished his day after 4 1/3 innings, allowing one run on just two hits while setting Double-A highs with eight strikeouts and 4 1/3 innings pitched.

The RoughRiders tied the game in the bottom of the fifth, using four singles and a triple to plate four runs and make it 5-5.

Wichita regained the lead in the top of the seventh when Spain launched a 101 mph solo homer over the wall in left field. The Wind Surge added two more later in the frame, stringing together three consecutive singles to take an 8-5 lead.

The RoughRiders tied the game again in the eighth, smashing a two-out, three-run homer to left field to make it 8-8.

Wichita answered in the top of the ninth, using a walk and an error to put a runner at third before Thomason once again delivered the go-ahead RBI, giving the Wind Surge a 9-8 lead.

Mueller recorded the final three outs to secure Wichita's second consecutive victory, 9-8.

  14. RHP Riley Quick set Double-A highs with eight strikeouts and 4 1/3 innings pitched.
  15. RHP Mitch Mueller tossed a scoreless ninth inning to secure the win.
