
NEW ORLEANS, La. - Etching his name into the NJCAA history books, Cloud County Community College sophomore men's track and field athlete Courtney Lawrence has been named United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association NJCAA Indoor Field Athlete of the Year.
The honor, which was announced on Wednesday afternoon, comes following a year in which Lawrence left no doubt throughout the 2021 season that his he is one of the best shot putters in NJCAA history.
Lawrence proved it at the NJCAA Championships in Pittsburg, where he notched two all-time top-5 marks – No. 3 (18.83m/61-9½) and No. 5 (18.69m/61-4) – and needed every bit of those to fend off a challenge from runner-up Fred Moudani of Barton County CC, who is now the fourth-best performer in NJCAA history at 18.64m (61-2).
The Petersfield, Jamaica, native ended the season with six all-time top-10 marks to his ledger, including the second-best heave of 18.92m (62-1), recorded at the KJCCC Invitational on Jan. 31 on his was to NJCAA Region VI and NJCAA Indoor Titles.
