Don't forget: volunteers are being sought for the annual Spring Spruce-up in Salina on Saturday, April 27.
The event is a volunteer community cleanup project at various sites across the city. This year, Spring Spruce-up is scheduled for 8 a.m. to noon.
According to information from the Friends of the River Foundation, the event coordinator, "volunteers are asked to meet at one of the volunteer worksites listed, wear appropriate shoes and clothes for the weather and something you do not mind getting dirty."
Tools will be provided at the worksites, however, volunteers are asked to bring their own work gloves.
Additionally, volunteers ages 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult.
This year's worksites are as follows.
Ashby House - 143 S. Eighth Street
Project(s): Landscaping and campus cleanup
CHDO - 700 W. Crawford Street and 746 Choctaw Ave.
Project(s): Paint two houses, a garage, and basements and seed the lawn
City of Salina Engineering - 4292 S. Burma Road
Project(s): Placing storm drain medallions, Free Landfill Day
Friends of the River Foundation - Park at the Kenwood Cove parking lot and meet at the YMCA parking lot. 570 YMCA Drive
Project(s): Remove honeysuckle bushes and trash along the Smoky Hill River
North Salina Community Developement- The intersection of N. Broadway Boulevard & N. Ninth Street
Project(s): Cleanup landscaping at 5-Corners and emptying lot trash
Salina Downtown - 112-114 S. Santa Fe Avenue, between Strand Plaza and Borolo Grill back patio
Project(s): Prepare planter pots, clean up trash corrals, clean parking lots, alleys, clean storage corral and power wash 67401 plaza.
Salina Food Bank - 255 S. Chicago Street
Project(s): Weed, add soil and mulch, plant garden beds, clean carts, sand and stain garden beds and re-tape warehouse.
Salina Rescue Mission - 1716 Summers Road
Project(s): Garden, paint and Organize storage units
The Temple - 336 S. Santa Fe Avenue, red north door

Free landfill day
In addition to the Spring Spruce-up events, the City of Salina is offering a free landfill day for all Saline County residents from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. April 27. The city landfill is located at 4292 S. Burma Road.
According to information from the city, landfill customers must have Saline County license plates on their vehicles for free disposal. Vehicles from other counties will be required to pay normal tipping fees. Commercial waste haulers will be given priority (standard rates apply).
"Customers are encouraged to use caution at all times, follow staff instructions, obey all signs, stay on approved roadways and be prepared for delays. A line is expected to form during this event and the number of customers will be limited at the disposal site and convenience area. Removal of any landfill property, including waste from other customers, is strictly prohibited," the city noted in a news release.
The following items will not be allowed at the landfill.

●Hazardous waste
●Liquid waste (including paint)
●Machinery
●Reactive waste
●Storage tanks
●Toxic waste
●Vehicle or equipment wreckage
Items that will be accepted, but still subject to applicable tipping fees for all commercial and residential customers include the following.
●Brick
●Concrete
●Rock
●Other aggregates
●Commercial loads (including waste from residents that is anything other than normal household trash)
●Freon-containing items (Freon removal certification required)
●Roofing and other construction materials
●Boats
●Sheds
●Trailers
●Tires
●Waste requiring a Special Waste Permit from the KDHE
