The Abilene girls basketball team will wind down their regular season with two more games ahead of the sub-state tournament later this month.

It’s been a difficult season for the Cowgirls, who stand at 3-15 heading into this final stretch, but through it all the team has never lost their willingness to put in the work.

The best thing I’ve seen from this team is determination,” Abilene head coach Mike Liby said. “This group works hard and never really gives up. We’ve played some very tough opponents and we keep at it.”

Turnovers have been a critical issue for a team with a few young guards, and that will have to be tightened up before the sub-state tournament.

Abilene has found a welcome surprise in the frontcourt as sophomore Claira Dannefer has stepped up to make a huge impact.

“We’ve been happy with Claira, she’s making steady progress in the post area,” Liby said. “As her sophomore season has come along, she’s gained a lot of confidence and continues to grow.”

Abilene has kept a number of games close down the stretch, but has struggled to find consistency from all facets of their game.

“Our biggest challenge is finding a complete game for us,” he said. It seems like we have guards that shoot well, but no inside play, or our inside is having a good game but the outside is off. We’d like to have a complete game as we finish the regular season.”

Abilene will travel to Clay Center to take on the 12-6 Tigers before returning home to wrap up their regular season against the rival Irish of Chapman.
