BALDWIN CITY – Kansas Wesleyan Softball picked up a doubleheader with the Baker Wildcats on Sunday after the Cherokee Nation Festival in Tahlequah, Okla., was canceled due to weather, and the Wildcats would sweep the Coyotes 9-1 and 9-2 at Cavaness Field.
In the opener, Lauren Blue (SR/Arlington, Texas) led off the game with a homer for the Coyotes, but Baker tied it up 1-1 with a sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the inning.
The Wildcats took a 2-1 lead with a run in the bottom of the second, the capitalized on a KWU error in the bottom of the third to plate four runs. Baker added three more in the fourth and the game would end on the run rule after the top of the fifth.
Blue's homer was Wesleyan's lone hit in the opener. Jewell Henry (SO/Kingston, Okla.) would allow nine runs, five earned on nine hits in the circle.
Baker jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings for before the Coyotes got on the board in the third. Bailey Rivas (SO/West Covina, Calif.) started the inning with a pinch hit single, followed by a walk to Blue. Miranda Guerrero (JR/Oxnard, Calif.) sacrificed the runners up 60 feet and Samantha Herrera (FR/Lake Jackson, Texas) singled home a run. Mia Hernandez (FR/Hanford, Calif.) followed with a walk to load the bases, but the Coyotes couldn't plate another run.
Kyndyll Garrison (SO/Fresno, Calif.) singled home Wesleyan's other run of the game after Paige Anderson (JR/Lakeville, Minn.) led off the fourth inning with a walk.
Baker scored three times in the bottom of the fifth and added another in the sixth.
Herrera had two of Wesleyan's six hits in the game. Garrison pitched six innings, allowing nine runs on 10 hits.
The Coyotes are back in action this weekend at the Hosea Bell Red Dirt Classic hosted by Langston University, at USA Softball Hall of Fame Complex in Oklahoma City on next Friday and Saturday.
