K-State WBB Powers Past DePaul in Ball Dawgs Classic

HENDERSON, Nevada – (9/12) K-State blitzed DePaul in the second quarter and used a complete team effort to secure a 92-66 win in its final game of the 2024 Ball Dawgs Classic at Lee’s Family Forum.

With the win, K-State head coach Jeff Mittie secured the 650th win of his 33-season coaching career, 650-371 (.637). During his time in Manhattan, Mittie has notched a mark of 195-136 (.589).

K-State was paced by the double-doubles of Ayoka Lee and Serena Sundell. Lee tallied a game-high 23 points on 11-of-16 shooting, a game-high 10 rebounds and four blocks. With her scoring performance, Lee moved to within 25 points of setting the K-State career scoring record.

Sundell carded her first double-double of the season and notched 15 points, tied her career-high with 11 assists and pulled in six rebounds.

Joining the offensive attack were Zyanna Walker with 13 points, including 12 in the second quarter, five assists and four rebounds.

Poindexter chipped in with 11 points, five rebounds and three assists.

Sides came off the bench to add 11 points, including a 3-of-4 effort from 3-point range, six rebounds and four assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- K-State (6-1) took control of the first quarter midway through the frame. DePaul (2-5) squared the game at 11 with 4:27 to play. The Wildcats answered with an 11-0 run to close the quarter, capped by a Jaelyn Glenn three-pointer to beat the buzzer and build a 22-11 advantage. Lee and Sundell paced the Wildcats with six points each.

- In the second quarter, Walker caught fire from beyond the arc to help stake the Wildcats to a 44-21 lead with 4:21 to play. Walker was 4-of-4 from long range in the second quarter, setting the school record for 3-pointers in a second quarter and tying the school record for 3-pointers made in any quarter of a game.

- The Wildcats would end the second quarter with 31 points in the frame (31-21) to build a 53-32 lead at the half. K-State shot 66.7 percent (12-of-18) including 66.7 percent (6-of-9) from 3-point range.

- The Blue Demons would win the third quarter, 21-20, as DePaul’s leading scorer Jorie Allen registered nine points but the Wildcats held a 73-53 advantage entering the fourth quarter.

- After DePaul cut the margin to 18, 78-60, K-State used a 12-4 run to build a 90-64 advantage with two minutes remaining.

- K-State shot 48.1 percent (37-of-77) from the field and equaled its season-high with nine 3-pointers (9-of-30; .300).

- The Wildcats handed out a season-high 30 assists, which were the most for K-State since dishing out 30 against UIW on December 3, 2019.

With her 120th career start at K-State, Lee remains in eighth in program history for career starts.

- The Wildcats held a 53-32 lead at halftime on Wednesday. Under Mittie, K-State is 156-19 (.891) when leading at halftime. The Wildcats have led at the half in six games this season (6-0).

- Lee hauled in 10 rebounds on Wednesday. Lee’s career total for rebounds stands at 1,157, improving upon her own school record for career rebounds. Lee is seventh in Big 12 history for career rebounds. This was her 63rd career game with 10 or more rebounds and the 105th of her career with five or more rebounds.

- Lee has shot 50.0 percent or better from the field in 83 career games. With her 11 made field goals on Wednesday, Lee set the school career record for field goals made at 937.

- Sundell notched her 76th career game with 10 or more points. Sundell owns 1,343 career points and remains in 15th on the K-State career scoring list.

- Sundell’s 11 assists on Wednesday improved her career total to 587 and she remains in third in school history for career assists. With three assists, Sundell will pass Megan Mahoney (2001-05; 589) for second in school history.

- Walker handed out five assists on Wednesday. This was her seventh career game with five or more assists and her fifth this season.

- Jaelyn Glenn hauled in six rebounds on Wednesday. This was her 47th career game with five or more rebounds and her fourth this season. Glenn boosted her career rebounding total to an even 500 with Wednesday’s effort.

- Sides reached double figures for points for the third time in the last four games and for the sixth time in her career.

- Sides connected on three 3-point field goals on Wednesday, equaling her season-high and marking her 13th career game with two or more connections from long range.

- Sides hauled in six rebounds, matching her season-high. This was her seventh career game with five or more rebounds.

- Glenn dished out three assists on Wednesday. Her career assists total stands at 234 and ranks 25th in school history for career assists.

- With her seven points on Wednesday, Glenn improved her career total to 921 points. She needs 79 points to become the 46th player in program history to score 1,000 or more career points at K-State.
