NEW FACES STARTING ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BALL: Eight players new to the Chiefs in 2021 got the start in tonight’s contest. That number included four rookies, as well as new faces at all five spots on the offensive line. The four rookies making their debut in the starting lineup were: OL Creed Humphrey at center, G Trey Smith at right guard, T Lucas Niang at right tackle and LB Nick Bolton on defense. On offense, veterans FB Michael Burton, G Joe Thuney and LT Orlando Brown all made their initial appearance in a Chiefs uniform, while DT Jarran Reed started on the defensive line in tonight’s game.
JONES BRINGS DOWN ROOKIE QUARTERBACK: DL Chris Jones dropped San Francisco rookie QB Trey Lance for a seven-yard loss in the first quarter of the game. Jones owns 40.5 career sacks (-286.0 yards) in the regular season. Jones finished the game with two tackles (one solo), including one tackle for loss, to go with one QB pressure and his 1.0 sack.
COBB REGISTERS SACK: LB Omari Cobb sacked San Francisco QB Trey Lance for a seven-yard loss in the second quarter of today’s game. Cobb finished the game with three tackles (two solo), including one for loss, to go with one QB pressure and 1.0 sack.
WARD TALLIES A PAIR OF SACKS: DE Tim Ward registered 2.0 sacks (-17.0 yards) in tonight’s game, first dropping 49ers QB Trey Lance for a nine-yard loss in the second quarter and then sacking San Francisco QB Josh Rosen for an eight-yard loss on the final play of the game. Ward owns one career NFL sack for a seven-yard loss. Ward recorded five tackles (four solo), including two for loss, to go with two QB pressures and the 2.0 sacks.
WHARTON GETS IN ON THE ACTION: DT Tershawn Wharton sacked San Francisco QB Trey Lance for an eight-yard loss and forced a fumble that was eventually recovered by the 49ers. In his rookie season in 2020, Wharton recorded 2.0 sacks (1.0 vs. the New York Jets on 11/1 and 1.0 at Miami on 12/13). He also registered a forced fumble vs. Denver (12/6). He added one solo tackle in the game.
PRINGLE HAULS IT IN: Chiefs WR Byron Pringle scored the team’s first touchdown of the preseason on a five-yard pass from QB Chad Henne, giving the Chiefs a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. He finished the game with two receptions for 10 yards, including the touchdown. Pringle owns two receiving touchdowns for his career. Pringle finished with 13 receptions for 160 yards and one touchdown in 2020.
TOWNSEND FINDS THE COFFIN CORNER: P Tommy Townsend booted seven punts for 374 yards (53.4 avg., 49.1 net) in today’s game, with four inside the 20 and one that went out of bounds at the 1-yard line.
WATTS GRABS INTERCEPTION: S Armani Watts intercepted a San Francisco QB Josh Rosen pass in the third quarter of today’s game and returned it 12 yards. Watts finished with two tackles (one solo) to go with a pass defensed and the interception.
O’DANIEL AND BOOTLE COMBINE FOR TAKEAWAY: LB Dorian O’Daniel forced a RB JaMycal Hasty fumble that was recovered by DB Dicaprio Bootle. Bootle finished with two solo tackles and the fumble recovery, while O’Daniel recorded a tackle to go with the forced fumble.
BUTKER CONNECTS ON PAIR OF FIELD GOALS: K Harrison Butker connected on field goals of 52 yards and 46 yards in today’s game and added an extra point to finish the game with seven points. Butker owns 549 career points in the regular season, ranking third in Chiefs history.
BUECHELE RUNS IN FOR GO-AHEAD SCORE: Rookie QB Shane Buechele posted a one-yard touchdown run to cap a nine-play, 68-yard drive to give the Chiefs a 19-16 lead in the fourth quarter. He finished the game completing 8-of-11 passing (72.7%) for 76 yards to go with three carries for 13 yards and the rushing touchdown.
