Ronald J. Sommerfeld, 81, of Canton, KS, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 28, 2023, at The Cedars, McPherson. He was a tool & die machinist for 28 years at CertainTeed Plastics and also worked at Kansas Jack for 12 years. After retirement, he worked on a part-time basis at Viega.
Ron was born on April 27, 1942, in Goessel, KS, the son of Lester Ralph and Kathrina (Janzen) Sommerfeld. He served in the United States Army and did a tour of duty in Vietnam.
He attended and served at the First Baptist Church in Canton as deacon, trustee, Sunday school superintendent, Sunday school teacher, sound technician, and also helped with maintenance, mowing, and snow removal.
Ron had a love for cats, cars, and Cub Cadet tractors. He belonged to the Hutchinson Corvette Club. Ron truly loved his family and always looked forward to getting together with them. He especially enjoyed interacting with his great-nephews and watching them play.
Survivors include: sister-in-law, Kathy Sommerfeld of Lindsborg, KS; nieces & nephews, David (Connie) Sommerfeld of Assaria, KS, Mark Sommerfeld of Brookville, KS, Lisa (Kevin) Schmidt of Olathe, KS, and Lori (Jeff) Tector of Galva, KS; and many great-nieces & great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Robert Sommerfeld, and a sister, Melvia Eberle.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, October 6, 2023, at First Baptist Church, Canton. The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until service time at the church on Friday. Burial with Military Honors will follow the service at the Canton Township Cemetery.
