The following statement was put out by Sporting Kansas City on June 5, 2026.
We’re excited to announce the hiring of Raphaël Wicky as Sporting Kansas City’s new Head Coach.
Wicky becomes the fifth head coach in Sporting KC history to lead the first team. Most recently, he served as head coach of Swiss powerhouse BSC Young Boys from 2022–2024, where he guided the club to a Swiss Super League and Swiss Cup double during the 2022–23 season.
Wicky departed Young Boys in March 2024 with the club sitting atop the Swiss Super League standings, positioned for a second consecutive league title.
He brings valuable experience in the United States as well, having previously coached the U.S. Under-17 Men’s National Team and in Major League Soccer with the Chicago Fire. Wicky led the U-17s to a second-place finish in the 2019 CONCACAF U-17 championship and oversaw their FIFA U-17 World Cup run later that year, before taking the helm in Chicago for the 2020 and 2021 MLS seasons.
As a player, Wicky enjoyed a distinguished 16-year professional career, earning 75 caps with the Swiss National Team. He started every match for Switzerland at the 2006 FIFA World Cup and represented his country at both the 1996 and 2004 UEFA European Championships. He concluded his playing career in 2008.
Please join us in welcoming Raphaël Wicky as Sporting Kansas City enters a new era.
We’ll see you at Sporting Park for our first home game on February 28.
