June 24, 1926 - April 6, 2021

Dale Herman Nielsen, 94, of Dunlap, passed away April 6, 2021.  He was born to N.H. (Herman) and Margarethe Nielsen on their farm near Americus, on June 24, 1926. After moving to a farm near Dunlap, he attended the Dunlap Schools.

Growing up during the Great Depression, hard work and sacrifice was the norm.  He loved the outdoors and farmed as long as health permitted.  He also worked for Western Grain Mill and drove trucks, not leaving much idle time for the fishing he enjoyed.

He, along with friends and neighbors were instrumental in starting the Dunlap Volunteer Fire Department and helped with many fundraising activities through the years.  He was also a charter member of the Neosho Valley 4-H club, remaining involved in various project leadership roles as an adult.

He married a school teacher, Frances Cleveland, and they had four children: Darrel, Karen, David and Kala.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents, wife Frances in 1977, brothers: Chris and Ray and sister Esther Griffith. He is survived by his children: Darrel (Janice) Nielsen, of Dunlap, Karen (John) Bishop, of Emporia, David Nielsen, of Dunlap and Kala (Mike) Wengler, of Aurora, NE; six grandchildren; several great-grandkids, who affectionately called him G.P. Pa; sisters: Elsie Anderson, of Americus, Mary Keen, of Edmond, OK and Dorathy Ratcliff, of Durant, OK; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Private graveside services will be held at a later date.  

Memorial contributions may be made to the Dunlap Fire Department or any Morris County 4-H Club and may be sent in care of Sawyer Funeral Home, Box 273, Council Grove, KS 66846.
