Abilene awards coronavirus grant funds to 28 businesses

ABILENE -- Thanks to Abilene City Commission, 28 Abilene businesses are getting a share of coronavirus grant funds.

In June, the City of Abilene was awarded a $132,000 Community Development Block Grant – CV from the Kansas Department of Commerce to assist small businesses affected by COVID-19. The application for the city’s grant funds closed July 10.

After reviewing grant applications and criteria, the Abilene City Commission approved splitting grant funds evenly between all qualifying business addresses.

“The Abilene City Commission recognizes all businesses have been affected by COVID-19,” said Mayor Chris Ostermann. “Our hope is for these grants to help support and promote Abilene’s small businesses and storefronts”

Twenty-eight businesses will each receive $4,714 to assist with operational expenses. Businesses receiving awards include the following.

15. La Fiesta Mexican Restaurant

16. Last Chance Graphics, Inc.

18. Mystic Hair Studio

19. Ortus Café, Inc.

20. Pick One Hour Cleaners

21. Rittel’s Western Wear

“We appreciate the opportunity to bring these dollars to Abilene businesses,” said Abilene Convention and Visitors Bureau director and grant administrator, Julie Roller Weeks. “The City is granting 100% of its funds back to businesses with no funds retained for administration. We are doing our best to help Abilene businesses navigate this difficult time.
