Carldon H. Broadbent, Beloit
April 25, 1930 - March 28, 2021
Carldon Herschel Broadbent was born on April 25, 1930 to Carl and Julia Finney Broadbent on the farm in Bloomfield Township. He died Sunday, March 28, 2021 at his home in rural Beloit at the age of 90.
He was a 1948 graduate of Beloit High School, as well as a graduate of Kansas State University and Emporia State. He started teaching rural school at District #82 in Laban, and in 1950 between college terms, and after college while farming the family land. In 1957, he joined Salina’s school system #305, and continued farming until 1960.
In 1990, he retired after 37 years as an educator, and returned to his home south of Beloit.
He was active in the Mitchell County Historical Society, the Pleasant View United Methodist Church, and numerous county and state organizations. The many trees and plants on his homestead, on which he built and laid out in 1978, indicate some of his other interests.
Carldon was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Neida Vonne Broadbent Zeek; nephews, Galen Zeek and Carl Ray Hobbs; and great-nephews, Joel Dean Hobbs and G.W. Pendlay.
He is survived by his sister, Beverly Broadbent Hobbs; nephew Daniel Hobbs (Rita); niece, Juanita Zeek Pendlay (Bill); six nephews; and one great-niece – of these, four have children, adding to the family several great-great relations whom Carldon tracks with interest. He encouraged the great-niece and nephews in their careers and education, and was proud that eight earned their college educations.
Graveside memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, April 5 at Elmwood Cemetery in Beloit. Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation.
Memorials may be given to the Mitchell County Anthropological Society.
