The Smoky Hill Museum is inviting history enthusiasts to revisit one of Salina’s most significant wartime sites with a fresh perspective. Dr. Merle “Boo” Hodges, a respected area physician and historian, will return to the museum for a special presentation, Camp Phillips: Revisited, on Feb. 6 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
Dr. Hodges, who previously shared insights on the history of Camp Phillips, will bring new information and images to explore the men, the mission, and the memory of this World War II training facility. Established as a necessary wartime installation, Camp Phillips played a key role in preparing soldiers for combat before being dismantled after the war. While it was in operation for only a brief period, its impact remains a lasting part of Salina’s history.
The presentation will take place in person at the Smoky Hill Museum, 211 W. Iron Ave., and will also be available via Zoom. Those interested in attending virtually can register for the Zoom link at www.smokyhillmuseum.org.
The Smoky Hill Museum, a nationally accredited institution in downtown Salina, offers free admission and is open Tuesday through Saturday. Visitors are also encouraged to stop by the museum store, which features regional and Kansas-made products, local artwork, and unique gifts.
For accommodations, attendees can contact Nona Miller at 785-309-5776 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Requests for material or speech access should be made at least five working days before the event.
