WICHITA – Kansas Wesleyan Softball used a grand slam by Carmen Angulo (SR/Long Beach, Calif.) to win the KCAC Opener for the Coyotes and earn a split with the Friends Falcons at Two Rivers Youth Complex on Saturday.
In the opener, the Coyotes took a 1-0 lead in the second inning as Bailey Rivas (SO/West Covina, Calif.) doubled and Brianna McGinnis (SR/Tucson, Ariz.) also doubled to score Rivas.
Paige Anderson (JR/Lakeville, Minn.) homered to lead off the third to give the Coyotes a 2-0 lead.
Friends responded in the bottom of the third with three runs to take a 3-2 lead.
Wesleyan then took the lead in the top of the sixth. Mia Hernandez (FR/Hanford, Calif.) singled, Lauren Blue (SR/Arlington, Texas) and McGinnis walked to load the bases before Angulo quickly unloaded then with a grand slam putting the Coyotes up 6-3.
Jewell Henry (SO/Kingston, Okla.) pitched two stellar innings of relief for the Coyotes, starting in the bottom of the sixth, to hold the lead and earn the save. Angulo got the win in the circle, going five innings, striking out five, as the pitcher of record when KWU took the lead in the top of the sixth.
Angulo had two of KWU's eight hits offensively.
Wesleyan's offense struggled in the second game, only getting one hit by Samantha Herrera (FR/Lake Jackson, Texas) in the top of the first inning.
Friends did most of its damage in the 5-0 game in the bottom of the first, scoring four runs, before adding a fifth in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the 5-0 lead.
Natalie Zamora (FR/Houston, Texas) took the loss for the Coyotes in three and two-thirds innings, with two strikeouts.
The Coyotes return home on Sunday for the first time in a month, hosting No. 25 ranked Morningside at 11 a.m. at Salina South High School.
