KWU baseball falls to No. 12 Ottawa 5-3 in series opener

OTTAWA – Kansas Wesleyan opened its series with No. 12 ranked Ottawa on Friday at Alumni Park and the Braves would rally for the win 5-3 over the Coyotes.

Both teams scored in the first inning.

William Dryburgh (SR/St. Joseph, Mo.) led off the first with a bunt single for the Coyotes, and then scored on Dustin Sipe (JR/Aztec, N.M.)'s double. Ottawa answered back in the bottom of the inning to even it up 1-1.

Ottawa took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning with a homer.

Wesleyan took a 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh. Diego Fisher (JR/Hollister, Calif.) led off with a single and Jalen Jones (SO/Katy, Texas) also singled. Jarrett Gable (JR/Colleyville, Texas) then reached on an error that brought home Fisher, and a second error on the play brought in Jones.

Ottawa tied it in the bottom of the inning with a run scoring on a double play, and the Braves scored twice in the bottom of the eighth on back-to-back RBI doubles to take a 5-3 lead.

Kevin Esquilin Cruz (JR/Trujilo Alto, Puerto Rico) got on base in the ninth, but the Coyotes could not get a rally started.

Six different Coyotes had a hit in the game. Trent Dewyer (JR/Albuquerque, N.M.) went seven and a third allowing five runs on 12 hits with two strikeouts. Cayden Diccion (JR/Piedmont, Calif.) got the final two outs in the eighth.

The teams meet again on Saturday at Noon for a doubleheader in Ottawa.
