John Leon McKenna Sr., 71, passed away on May 7, 2025, in Salina, Kansas. Born on December 2, 1953, in Windham, Connecticut, John lived a full and spirited life marked by deep family ties and a love for the things that brought him joy.
John was the beloved husband of Melody McKenna and a devoted father to Kari McKenna, Nicholas McKenna, Brandon McKenna, and John “Jay” McKenna Jr.
He took great pride in his role as a grandfather to fifteen grandchildren and delighted in playfully pestering them—much to the amusement of some and the exasperation of others, especially his wife. His playful teasing with his grandchildren became a signature part of who he was—a source of laughter that will echo through memories for years to come. His sense of humor was a constant presence in family life.
He is also remembered fondly by his siblings: sisters Patti Spaulding, Linda Smith, Alice Avery, Ruth Waite, and Carol Tilley; and brother James “Butch” McKenna Jr. John’s extended family includes many nieces and nephews who will miss his lively spirit. He was preceded in death by his parents, Geraldine McKenna and James McKenna Sr.A passionate sports fan through and through, John cheered faithfully for the Dallas Cowboys, the UConn Huskies, and the New York Yankees. Whether it was football season or March Madness, he could always be found rooting for his teams with unwavering loyalty. He also had a lifelong love of professional wrestling—a pastime he enjoyed immensely even if it wasn’t shared by everyone in the household.
A Celebration of Life Reception will be held from 11 am until 1 pm on Wednesday May 14, 2025, at the Friendship Center, 746 Commanche Ave. Salina. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to help offset funeral expenses.
