MANHATTAN – Following a stellar debut season, Kansas State sophomore guard Serena Sundell has been recognized by the Big 12 Conference women’s basketball coaches on the 2022-23 Preseason All-Big 12 Team in an announcement by the league on Wednesday.
Sundell, a 2022 All-Big 12 honorable mention recipient and unanimous selection to the 2022 Big 12 All-Freshman Team, finished the 2021-22 season with averages of 10.6 points per game, 5.3 assists, 3.4 rebounds and 1.0 steals per game. She also led K-State in 3-point field goals made (53) and attempted (150) and in 3-point field goal percentage (.353). She was also K-State’s leader in free throw percentage (.820). In league action, Sundell averaged 10.8 points, 5.8 assists, 3.6 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game.
She was the first K-State freshman guard to register 300 or more points, 175 or more assists and 20 or more blocks. She joined Kayla Goth as the only K-State guards in program history to reach these season milestones at any time in their careers.
Sundell, a five-time Big 12 Freshman of the Week recipient in 2021-22, was the only freshman in K-State history and the only freshman in the nation last season to register 175 or more assists and 50 or more 3-point field goals made in their debut season.
Joining Sundell on the 2022-23 Preseason All-Big 12 Team were: Aijha Blackwell and Sarah Andrews of Baylor, Lexi Donarski, Ashley Joens and Emily Ryan of Iowa State, Holly Kersgieter of Kansas, Taylor Robertson and Madi Williams of Oklahoma and Rori Harmon and Aaliyah Moore of Texas.
Joens of Iowa State was named the 2022-23 Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year. Aijha Blackwell of Baylor was named the 2022-23 Big 12 Preseason Newcomer of the Year, while Darianna Littlepage-Buggs of Baylor was chosen the 2022-23 Big 12 Preseason Freshman of the Year.
Honorable mention selections were: Ja’Mee Asberry and Dre-Una Edwards of Baylor, Zakiyah Franklin and Taiyanna Jackson of Kansas, Ana Llanusa of Oklahoma, Shaylee Gonzalez, Taylor Jones and Sonya Morris of Texas and JJ Quinerly and Madisen Smith of West Virginia.

The Wildcats enter the 2022-23 season two wins shy of 1,000 in its history. Head coach Jeff Mittie will begin the season one victory short of 600 in his 31-year coaching career and needs five wins to reach 150 during his nine seasons in Manhattan.
Entering the 2022-23 season, Kansas State will be led by the sophomore trio of Brylee Glenn, Jaelyn Glenn and Sundell. The Wildcats also welcome in graduate transfer Sarah Shematsi, senior Gabby Gregory, redshirt sophomore Heavenly Greer, sophomore Gisela Sanchez and freshmen Mimi Gatewood, Ja’Mia Harris, Eliza Maupin and Mikayla Parks.
