LEAVENWORTH - Kansas Wesleyan Baseball swept Saturday's doubleheader with the University of Saint Mary Spires to already claim the series win at the USM Baseball Field. KWU won the opener 10-0 in a run-rule shortened game, and then posted a 9-1 win in the second contest.
The Coyotes took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning as Jacob Williamson led things off with an error and then scored on Garrett Garfield's single.
KWU added another run in the second as Blake Dale singled to score Coulson Riggs who had singled earlier in the inning.
Another single tally came for the Coyotes in the third inning as Fernando Ruvalcaba reached on an error and then scored when Carter Allen doubled and an error allowed Ruvalcaba to score.
Back-to-back doubles by Williamson and Tyler Favretto plated another single run for the Coyotes in the fourth.
The Coyotes scored twice in the sixth as Williamson led off the inning with a single and then scored on Favretto's triple. Garfield then singled to bring in the second run of the inning.
Blake Dale walked and Williamson was hit by a pitch to set up Favretto's 2-run double in the seventh to put two more on the board for the Coyotes.
Allen walked to lead off the KWU eighth inning and Dale doubled to bring in Allen. Eric Romero then reached on an error that allowed Dale to score to make it 10-0. Saint Mary would go in order in the bottom of the inning triggering the early ending.
Favretto had three hits and drove in four runs. Williamson, Garfield, Allen and Dale had two hits each. Brett Maddock threw a complete game shutout, scattering five hits over eight innings and striking out four.
In the second game, the Coyotes broke a scoreless tie with five runs in the top of the second. Allen led off the inning with a double and then scored when Romer reached on an error. Favretto singled to score two runs, Garfield singled in a run, and then Alex Garcia would score on a delayed double steal to put the Coyotes up 5-0.
Wesleyan added two more in the third as the Coyotes loaded the bases as Finder walked and Dale and Romero were hit by pitches to set up Williamson's 2-run single.
Saint Mary put a run on the board in the bottom of the third.
The Coyotes added two more in the sixth as Garfield was hit by a pitch and pinch runner Michael Rago would score on Allen's single. Finder singled to drive in another run, and the Coyotes got a single by Dale and a walk by Lakin Franz to load the bases but could not push another run across.
Favretto, Allen and Finder had two hits each for the Coyotes while Williamson and Favretto drove in two each. Nathan Galusha got the win, going six innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out four. Wil Yamka pitched the seventh, striking out two.
