Judy Carolyn Schafer, 83, of Hutchinson, Kansas, and formerly of McPherson, Kansas, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, with her family by her side at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center.

Judy was born on April 21, 1942, in Austin, Texas, the daughter of Virginia (Ellis) and Dr. Joseph LeRoy Love. She graduated from Austin High School in 1960 and went on to earn her undergraduate degree in Library Sciences from the University of Texas at Austin. In 1992, she proudly graduated with honors from Wichita State University, receiving her Master’s degree in Educational Administration.

Judy was a lifelong educator, licensed to teach in five states, and devoted her life to helping children and others learn, grow, and feel supported. She served as the librarian at Prosperity Elementary School and the District Media Coordinator for the Buhler School District, from which she retired. Known for her kindness, generosity, and gentle spirit, Judy touched countless lives throughout her career and beyond.

Outside of her professional life, Judy cherished time spent with her family and friends, especially moments shared at the farm with her beloved husband, Kenny. She had a deep love for animals and never hesitated to help any stray dog that crossed her path.

Survivors include her loving husband of 42 years, Kenny; two daughters, Tracy Silvers of Denver, Colorado, and Gina Wilson and her husband, Jeremy, of Broomfield, Colorado; a son, Joe Schafer and his wife, Becca, of Durango, Colorado; a brother, Dr. Joseph Love, Jr., and his wife, Laurie, of Champaign, Illinois; six grandchildren, Saffron Silvers, Sage Silvers, Madeline Wilson, Jack Wilson, Liat Schafer, and Sadie Schafer; and many extended relatives and dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her granddaughter, Natasha Hashman.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 13, 2026, at Stockham Family Funeral Home, 205 North Chestnut, McPherson, Kansas 67460. Burial will follow at McPherson Cemetery.

The family encourages all attendees to wear casual attire in keeping with Judy’s warm and welcoming spirit.

Memorial donations may be made payable to the McPherson County Community Foundation (MCCF) and will be used to expand the fencing and play area for the shelter dogs at the McPherson Animal Shelter, in care of Stockham Family Funeral Home, 205 North Chestnut, McPherson, Kansas 67460.
