Kanas Wesleyan has earned the NAIA Champions of Character Five-Star Institution Award that honors institutional commitment to character-driven athletics. KWU earned Gold Level status for the award.
Each year, NAIA institutions use the Champions of Character scorecard to measure the pursuit of character-driven athletics. Institutions scoring a minimum of 60 out of 100 points earn the Champions of Character Five-Star Institution Award.
"I am thrilled to be back at the Gold Standard. It's a standard of excellence that is the expectation within our athletic department," said Ryan Showman, Kansas Wesleyan's Champions of Character Liaison, Women's Basketball Coach, and Assistant Athletic Director for Student Experience. "This is a true testament to the hard work and intentionality of our student-athletes and athletic department."
Institutions are measured on a demonstrated commitment to Champions of Character and earn points in character training, conduct in competition, academic focus, character recognition and character promotion. Institutions earned points based on exceptional student-athlete grade point averages and by having minimal to no ejections during competition throughout the course of the academic year.
Kansas Wesleyan was one of 157 institutions across the NAIA membership to earn the Five-Star Award. KWU was one of 67 institutions to earn Gold Level status and one of only 28 institutions to earn a perfect score of 100 on the NAIA Champions of Character Scorecard.
"I feel that the core value of servant leadership is a value that best describes our athletes and coaches. The ability to serve the Salina Community is a privilege that we get to experience at Kansas Wesleyan University," Showman said. "The Gold Standard is an accomplishment that all of Coyote Nation should be proud of. I couldn't be more proud and I am excited to get to work on this year!"
