The SES boys basketball team (5-5) will wrap up its Sterling Invitational run today in the fifth place game against the Scott City Beavers (2-7).

Scott City reached this point by falling to Sterling in the opening round of the tournament, but picking up its second win of the season against Smoky Valley yesterday.

Southeast of Saline fell in its opening game as well to Hutch Trinity but picked up a convincing win over Kingman on Tuesday before resting up for the last two days.

“The time to rest was good,” SES head coach Bryson Flax said. “We didn’t know our opponent for today until after practice was over yesterday so in terms of preparation it didn’t help us much there but we were able to clean up some things that we needed to fix.”

The Trojans now turn their attention to a 2-7 Beaver team that has struggled mightily to put points on the board this season, averaging just 30 points per game.

Despite the lack of offense, Scott City does present a large roster with some budding potential.

“They’re big and physical,” Flax said. “They want to play at a slower pace and get a lot of post touches. Their record isn’t great but they’re one of the better looking teams that we’ve played.”

For SES, the name of the game will be pace tonight, as Scott City’s gameplay relies heavily on slowing the game down.

For the Trojans, tonight is also an opportunity to emerge from the tournament with a few big wins and some steam heading into the back half of the schedule.

“It would be great to end this tournament with back to back wins,” he said. “Every coach wants to win three out of three when you go to one of these but it would be nice to win another convincing one tonight and build off that momentum as we head into league play.”

Tip off is scheduled for 4:45pm at Sterling High School immediately following the SES girls game against Kingman. Both games can be heard on KINA (910 AM or 107.5 FM) courtesy of Eagle Radio.
