The Southeast of Saline girls basketball team (8-5) will look to complete the season sweep over the Sacred Heart Lady Knights (7-4) tonight at 6pm.

The Lady Trojans, who defeated Sacred Heart in Salina by a score of 52-36 back in December, have been playing their best basketball as of late, winning seven of their last nine with their two losses coming to state-ranked teams.

Sacred Heart, who looked good coming off of the loss to Southeast, has been on a bit of a skid lately, dropping two of their last three to Trinity and St. Johns.

The two teams enter this game as the #1 and #2 schools in the NCAA standings, and with just one month left in the regular season this could have major implications on who takes home the hardware at the end of the regular season.

While another league title would certainly be great for Southeast, their focus remains on bigger things.

“Obviously it’s a big game for league standings but our focus is just on getting another win,” SES head coach Shauna Smith said.

This game features very different offensive philosophies, pitting the small speed of the Trojans against the size of the Knights.

“I think we’re definitely more guard oriented so we put a lot more pressure on and really got up and down the court,” Smith said. “They’re a more post oriented team that really rebounds well so tonight we’ve got to rebound really hard. Once we got going on the glass last time we really broke things open in the second half.”

As it has been all season, rebounding will be the key tonight for a Southeast team that has done a much better job on the glass despite lacking a major post presence.

“Keeping them off the boards will be key tonight,” she said.
“We can’t allow them to get second chance points, and we need to be able to score. We haven’t shot the ball well since christmas so we’re due to hit some threes and have a good shooting night.”

Tip off between SES and Sacred Heart is scheduled for 6pm tonight from Southeast of Saline High School. The game can be heard on KINA (910 AM or 107.5 FM).
