In 1988, severe thunderstorms spawned five tornadoes in North Carolina just after midnight. One violent tornado, an F4, ran an 83- marathon and averaged 200 yards wide. Sprinting at speeds around 50 mph, this powerful tornado ripped through a densely populated section of Raleigh. There were four fatalities (two in Raleigh), 154 injuries, and around $77 million damage.
In 1960, an extremely powerful winter storm smacked Lake Superior. Duluth, Minn., was hit by a severe blizzard that produced around a foot of snow with gusts measured at 73 mph. The winter storm produced waves 20 to 40 feet high on Lake Superior.
In 1952, Salina set their all-time record low for November when the mercury plunged to 5 below zero.
