KWU Football opens Bissell Division play on Saturday hosting Avila for Homecoming

The Coyotes return from the bye week for their Homecoming game against Kansas Conference and Gene Bissell Division opponent Avila. Kickoff is 1 p.m. at JRI Stadium and the Graves Family Sports Complex.LIVE COVERAGE

THE SERIES

  1. The Coyotes are 4-2 against Avila since the Eagles joined the KCAC in 2018. They won last year's game 34-16 in Kansas City, Missouri and are 2-2 against AU in the last four contests. Oddly, KWU is 1-2 at home against Avila and 3-0 in games played in Kansas City.

KANSAS WESLEYAN AT A GLANCE

  1. The Coyotes will be led by co-interim head coaches Chris Snyder and David Leonard.
  2. After competing against teams from the Ted Kessinger Division in the first six weeks KWU plays its final five games of the regular season against teams in the Bissell Division. The Coyotes shared the division title with Ottawa last season, the Braves advancing to postseason play by virtue of the tiebreaker.
  3. The Coyotes lost to McPherson 42-13 in McPherson in their game before the conference-wide bye week. They led 10-7 after the first quarter but trailed 21-10 at halftime. Zarek Fewell scored on a 29-yard run and Talon Cope kicked field goals of 23 and 29 yards to account for KWU's scoring.
  4. Cope has 32 points this season having made all five of his field goal attempts and 17 of 19 extra points. Cole Seagraves is 2 of 3 on field goal attempts including a school-record 54-yarder against Friends on September 21 in Wichita.
  5. KWU ran for 250 yards - 118 by Tyler Boston and 80 from Nick Allsman - in last year's victory over Avila. Both scored touchdowns as well. Byron McNair threw for 119 yards and a touchdown in his first college start. Defensively the Coyotes held the Eagles to a minus-1 yard rushing.

AVILA AT A GLANCE

  1. The Eagles have lost five in a row since a 24-21 season-opening victory over Bethany. They lost to Evangel 44-3 in Springfield, Missouri in their game before the bye. Their best showing since Bethany was a 20-17 loss to Bethel on September 21 in North Newton.
  2. Junior Eli Williams and sophomore Nick Sanford II have shared the quarterback duties. Williams has thrown for 657 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions while Sanford has 621 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions. Williams is the top rusher with 151 yards and two touchdowns.
  3. Williams was 30 of 49 passing for 245 yards and two touchdowns in last year's game against KWU.
  4. Avila averages 16.5 points and 260.7 yards and allows 37.3 points and 435.5 yards per game. Opponents average 241.5 yards rushing and the Eagles just 43.8.
  5. Avila is coached by Derrick Alexander who's in his second season. A wide receiver out of Michigan he was a first-round draft pick by the Cleveland Browns in 1994 and played nine seasons in the NFL - four with the Kansas City Chiefs. He finished his career with 417 receptions and 40 touchdowns.
