UPDATE: Salina police request charges for Smith; woman recovering

The Salina Police Department Thursday afternoon released additional information regarding the alleged stabbing incident in front of Walmart late Wednesday morning.

According to the media release, the 26-year-old woman who suffered a wound to her back underwent surgery and is recuperating. It is likely that she will make a full recovery, the department noted.

Additionally, the department reported that an arrest affidavit was submitted to the Saline County Attorney requesting the following charges for Kenneth Harold Smith, 71, of Salina.

●Attempted first degree murder

●Criminal use of a weapon

●Aggravated weapons violation by a convicted felon

●Criminal carrying of a weapon

Smith is being held on no bond in the Saline County Jail.

A 71-year-old Salina man was arrested after an alleged stabbing in front of a south Salina retail store late Wednesday morning.

At approximately 11:46 a.m. Wednesday, the law enforcement dispatch center received a call that someone had been stabbed in front of Walmart, 2900 S. Ninth Street. When officers arrived, they found a 26-year-old woman who suffered a stab wound to her back, according to a news release issued by the Salina Police Department this afternoon. The woman was transported by EMS to Salina Regional Health Center. No condition information was available.

"Officers were directed to a man who was still at the scene and he was identified as the person who committed the stabbing," the news release noted.

The man, identified as Kenneth Harold Smith, 71, of Salina, was taken into custody.

According to the Salina Police Department, "there is no indication of further danger to the public."

Salina Police Department detectives, officers, and crime scene technicians are continuing the investigation, and the department plans to confer with the Saline County Attorney concerning requested charges.

"At the time of this release, the motive is unclear, and investigators are attempting to gather additional information. We are also seeking any information from anyone in the public that may have witnessed the event. Photographs or video are especially helpful," the Salina Police Department noted in the news release.
